Flipped isn’t a movie that will win any awards or break any records, but the film still presents an endearing double-sided story about the birth of adolescent love. Writer/Director Rob Reiner (The Bucket List, Stand By Me) does an excellent job of capturing two sides of a childhood love story. Madeline Carroll (Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Vanilla Gorilla) does an amazing job building up a character who falls into and out of love. Carroll is joined by Callan McAuliffe (I Am Number Four, Resistance), a relative newcomer to the big screen. The two develop an excellent on screen chemistry that is both dynamic and admirable for these young actors.
The film starts off simply enough. The Loski family is just moving in to a small suburban neighborhood. As their moving truck pulls up, a young Juli Baker (Morgan Lily) spots a young Bryce Loski (Ryan Ketzner) and is immediately smitten by his eyes.

Flipped may seem like old hat from Rob Reiner with shades of Stand by Me. However, it can.t easily be dismissed because it.s a good and gentle film (though I did have a problem or two) and perfect for family viewing. When Bryce (Ryan Ketzner) was in third grade he moved next door to Juli (Morgan Lily). Bryce was wary of the girl but she had only eyes from him. This relationship continues until Bryce (Callan McAuliffe) and Juli (Madeline Carroll) are teens in sixth grade in 1963. Bryce.s family, mom Patsy (Rebecca De Mornay), dad Steven (Anthony Edwards), sister Lynetta (Cody Horn), doesn.t really associate with Juli.s family, mom Trina (Penelope Ann Miller), dad Richard (Aidan...

Title: Flipped Directed By: Rob Reiner Starring: Madeline Carroll, Callan McAuliffe, Anthony Edwards, Aidan Quinn, Rebecca De Mornay, Penelope Ann Miller, John Mahoney, Morgan Lily, Ryan Ketzner When little kids have an imaginary tea party or action figure battle, tossing in an unimaginative parent could completely ruin the fun. What once felt real could be suddenly spoiled by a wise adult. There’s no rule barring adults from coming of age movies, but in Flipped’s case there should be. What starts off as a beautifully innocent tale of two teens navigating their confusing feelings for one another, is stomped all over and tarnished by painfully overdone grownup nonsense. Juli Baker’s [...]...
