From the pages of Birds of Prey and the forthcoming Justice League of America (Issue #1 out next Wednesday 20 February) comes the spinoff character nobody wanted to read more of – Katana!
As is usual with a first issue of the New 52, there’s no context or background to the newly launched series: does Katana’s story take place before or after her stint in the Birds of Prey? Is this series a lead-in to the Jla or completely separate, or will it run parallel to that series? No clue.
Katana herself remains underdeveloped as a character – she’s got mad fighting skills and is handy with her sword, she talks about getting better at fighting, talks about being monogamous to her dead husband (who possessed her sword when he was murdered) and that’s about it. She is a very dull character to sustain her own series – there’s very little...

Today, digital comics platform ComiXology announced that the first installment of a four-issue digital preview of the "Hawken" is now available. While the full hardcover release of "Hawken: Genesis" won't be available until March of next year, the preview will offer the first glimpse of some of the backstory for Adhesive's upcoming free-to-play mech shooter--along with an invite to join the closed beta.
Earlier this year, we spoke with Transmedia producer Joe LeFavi about the 2013 comic release with comics publisher Archaia, where he summed up some of the mythology being built out in the upcoming hardcover:
A few hundred years into the future, big business has propelled Mankind to expand across the galaxy. Yet for the first time in history, the government permits three corporations to privately terraform and colonize an entire planet. Just imagine it. An entire planet owned and governed by corporate interests. On this planet, we watch...

DC Comics has announced that they will be releasing a whopping 52 variant covers for the first issue of “Justice League of America.” Written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by David Finch, the 52 covers are intended to represent each of the 50 United States as well as Washington DC and U.S. Commonwealth Puerto Rico. This is quite an ambitious move for the company; one that clearly seems to be aimed at appealing to the collectors market.
This isn’t the first time that variant covers reach the 50+ quantity mark in recent years, with Idw having released 55 different covers for their recent “Mars Attacks!” title while “Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters” released 80 different variant covers unique to specific retailers who ordered above a specified quantify.

Up until this point, Adhesive Games' mech combat Fps Hawken has dazzled us with its Unreal-powered visuals, realizing detailed, ravaged cityscapes. But in the months we've been teased with the playgrounds where you and your mech will be blasting enemies to bits, there haven't been all that many details about the story about the world of the game. Transmedia producer Joe LeFavi is hoping to change that with the upcoming release of an original graphic novel set in the Hawken universe from comic publisher Archaia. LeFavi, who's with transmedia company Quixotic Transmedia (the folks who try to figure out how to get movies into games, games into comics, and so on), is overseeing the production of the graphic novel which will feature multiple artists including Adhesive Games co-founder, Khang Le.
While its release is about a year out, we got a few questions over to LeFavi by e-mail recently during...

Tonight Arsenal will play Udinese in a two leg Champions League encounter that they should never have been involved in. They will do it without their previous captain, Cesc Fabregas whom they have just sold to Barcelona in one of the most inevitable but ill timed transfers of all time, without their new captain Robin Van Persie – their attacking focal point and without manager Arsene Wenger who is banned from not only the bench and dressing room but also from communicating with them before and during the game.
It’s worth highlighting that the Italian club have also had their best player Alex Sanchez, pillaged by Barcelona as well as losing Gokhan Inler and Christain Zapata. They are also two weeks behind Arsenal in terms of preparation for the season ahead and Arsenal have enjoyed success against Italian teams over the last decade winning seven times, drawing three and losing just twice.

Truthfully, I’ve always found John Waters to be more interesting as a personality and social critic than as a filmmaker. And even if his filmmaking output has slowed (if not stopped altogether), the man is still at the peak of his observational powers in Role Models (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, $15), a book of his essays just out in paperback.
The gimmick of the book is that Waters is writing about his “role models” – the people who have impressed or influenced him in some way. Some of them are people you might expect – the playwright Tennessee Williams, a porn filmmaker who shoots straight Marines getting blowjobs, one of the women involved with the Manson Family. Others are more unusual, like pop crooner Johnny Mathis and Saint Catherine of Siena.
But the subject of each essay is really just an opportunity for Water’s hilarious and alarmingly well-written flights of rhetorical fancy.

Q: I´ve been reading the Kathy Griffin book and while it was much less fun than I was hoping for, there was something that really annoyed me -- besides the fact that in her world "the gays" is a synonym for hair dresser or shopping buddy. Kinda makes me wish she´d actually let me at her hair to change that attitude. Anyway, in the book she says that Andy Dick got punched in the face by Wesley Snipes for using (and I quote) "the n-word" in a club. Later there is another Dick story about one of his stand-up appearances where he called the audience repeatedly (and I quote again) "faggots.” So why isn´t it "the n-word" and "the f-word" Or "nigger" and "faggot"? -- Thomas,...
