Hans Rotenberry
- Music Department
Hans Rotenberry is a singer/songwriter from the East Tennessee town,
Kingsport. He formed the pop/rock band, The Shazam in 1994, in
Nashville, Tennessee with Scott Ballew and Mick Wilson.
Rotenberry had begun recording with producer Brad Jones at Alex The Great studio in Berry Hill, TN and the band formed as a result of the demo sessions.
Originally called "Shazam," the band made their live debut in 1994.
Their first release was on cassette only. Entitled Shake 500, the collection was essentially the first ten songs that Rotenberry and his newly formed band demoed with Jones. A homemade project, the cassette covers were never consistent in appearance or quality and the tapes were mostly dubbed at Rotenberry's apartment.
The band's debut CD, The Shazam was released in 1997 on Copper Records. The album was later re-issued on Not Lame Recordings with the addition of tracks that were originally left off the Copper release. Many of the songs were re-recordings of the Shake 500 demos.
The Shazam's second album, Godspeed The Shazam was released in 1999 on Not Lame Recordings. The album featured a diverse array of sounds and enjoyed favorable reviews and was critically acclaimed, especially in the UK. In 2000, The Shazam were one of two US acts that performed on the BBC1 TV and BBC Radio Live From Abbey Road Studios (Moby was the other American act) for the "Perfect Day" event held on May 29. The Shazam releases their fifth album on August 4, 2009. Entitled Meteor, the 11-song collection produced by Mack (whose production and engineering credits include Queen, Black Sabbath, ELO and more) is also released on the Not Lame label.
