After winning plaudits for Winter’s Bone and now Leave No Trace, Debra Granik tells Screen why ultra-low budgets are no barrier to effective filmmaking.
What Debra Granik describes as her “social-realist mentality” was first discovered by indie film aficionados with the release of the writer/director’s debut feature Down To The Bone in 2004. It was, however, 2010 follow-up Winter’s Bone — featuring Jennifer Lawrence in a breakthrough performance as a resolute teen trying to keep her troubled Ozark Mountains family together — that confirmed how skilfully Granik could use that mentality to infuse an intimate drama with veracity and emotional force.

Different indeed! Renée Zellweger sports a brunette do in her latest film, Same Kind of Different As Me, based on Ron Hall, Denver Moore and Lynn Vincent’s bestselling memoir of the same name.

In hopes of moving one step closer to repairing the damage, Zellweger, as the pious Deborah, requests her husband volunteer at an inner city homeless shelter where they meet an underprivileged man (Djimon Hounsou) she believes will change their lives. "You're not a bad man, and I'm glad we're friends." Paramount has debuted the trailer for a drama called Same Kind of Different as Me, adapted from the memoirs of Denver Moore, Ron Hall & Lynn Vincent, about the lives of three people bound together by fate and friendship. The film stars Renée Zellweger in her first major role (aside from Bridget Jones's Baby) in years, Greg Kinnear, and Djimon Hounsou; along with Jon Voight, Olivia Holt, Ty Parker and others. This looks like an emotional, heartfelt story of friends and family, but some of it looks pretty bland and melodramatic. They're also dumping this during the Oscar season meaning it's not that great, but at least Djimon Hounsou looks exceptional. Give it a watch. Here's the first official trailer for Michael Carney's Same Kind of Different as Me, direct from YouTube: A modern-day slave, an international art dealer, and...

When is a Paramount Pictures film not really a Paramount Pictures production? The question might seem illogical on its face, but it's now one of supreme importance in an ongoing dispute over the unreleased film Same Kind of Different as Me, starring Renee Zellweger, based on the 2006 book co-authored by Ron Hall and Denver Moore of their friendship. In June 2015, The American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada sued the studio over the score to the film. A year after starring in House of Wax, Vincent Price made another film with a solid cast and a script by an Oscar-winning writer, photographed in Technicolor by the man who went on to shoot such rainbow-hued classics as Mary Poppins. These sponsored films were underwritten by various corporations, industrial groups, and branches of our government. Debra Granik’s Stray Dog enters the life of one man who could easily become a caricature and gives us a portrait novelistic in its depth and breathtaking in its humanity. On the surface, Ron Hall, the subject of Granik’s documentary Stray Dog, is a kind of cultural Rorschach test: Depending on which part of the country you come from, and your own background, you might see him and arrive at any number of assumptions. Here’s a gruff, heavy Vietnam vet and biker, leathered up and covered in tattoos, living in a trailer park in the Ozarks. Are you intimidated? Attracted? Curious? Terrified? Granik met Hall when he came on to play a small part in her gripping 2011 drama Winter’s Bone, an indie hit that gave Jennifer Lawrence her breakout role and scored an unlikely Best Picture Oscar nomination (Exhibit A in why it was a good...

One of the under-discussed success of 2014 (but one that won’t go unnoticed in Hollywood) is "Heaven Is for Real," the adaptation of Lynn Vincent’s New York Times Bestseller. The true story of a kid’s near death experience and the visions of the afterlife he bestowed to his parents grossed over $90 million at the domestic box office, a huge hit for Sony Pictures and a career highlight for star Greg Kinnear. Those numbers must have instilled some faith in the actor: He’ll star alongside Renee Zellweger and Djimon Hounsou in the next Vincent adaptation, “Same Kind of Different As Me.” According to a press release announcing the cast, Paramount Pictures's tongue-twisting drama tells the true story of “an international art dealer Ron Hall (Kinnear) who must befriend a dangerous homeless man (Hounsou) in order to save his struggling marriage to his wife (Zellweger), a woman whose...

After taking a break from acting for four years, Renee Zellweger is getting back in the game. Next year, we’ll see the actress in legal thriller The Whole Truth, alongside Keanu Reeves, and it looks like that project rekindled her fire for performance, as Deadline reports that Zellweger has also signed on to star in Paramount’s faith drama, Same Kind Of Different As Me.

Zellweger will play Deborah, whose higher calling to serve others brought Hall and Moore together before she succumbed to cancer in 2000.
The project is in the works at Paramount with Mary Parent producing alongside Darren Moorman (Marilyn Hotchkiss’ Ballroom Dancing & Charm School, Unconditional), a former exec at faith-based Sky Angel.

Samuel L. Jackson gave a shot at playing a down-on-his-luck real life person in Resurrecting the Champ, the 2007 movie that barely anyone noticed as it came and went. Apparently Jackson won't stop until he gets some attention for this specific kind of role. He's signed on to star in Same Kind of Different as Me, based on a bestseller about an ex-con drifter who develops a friendship with a wealthy art dealer. Variety isn't giving many details beyond that, but Amazon reviews describe Jackson's character, Denver Moore, as "modern-day slave," who had worked as a sharecropper picking cotton outside of Forth Worth and eventually opted for a life of homelessness instead. Ron Hall, the art dealer character, begins volunteering at a local homeless shelter and strikes up a friendship with Moore. It may be completely unfair of me, but I can't help thinking of The Soloist, the soppy Joe Wright...

-Samuel L. Jackson has joined Same Kind of Different As Me, an adaptation of a nonfiction bestseller about "Denver Moore, an ex-con drifter who develops an unlikely friendship with a wealthy Dallas art dealer named Ron Hall." Bruce and Roderick Taylor (of the fatally flawed The Brave One) are writing the screenplay. Jackson is playing Moore; find somebody as equally cool to play Hall and I'm there. -Confessions of a Shopaholic was crushed last Valentine's Day by He's Just Not That Into You, but it still topped $40 million, which is good enough for Universal to decide to buy two more ...

Samuel Jackson has signed on to star in Same Kind of Different As Me, from the bestselling memoir by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. It's one of those deals where there's a production company and a script and a star before there's a studio or a budget. The screenwriters are Roderick and Bruce Taylor (The Brave One) and the producer is franchise king Ralph Winter (X-Men, Fantastic Four, pre-Abrams Star Trek), with Jackson also executive-producing.The book's subtitle is "a modern day slave, an international art dealer, and the unlikely woman who bound them together", which is a fairly handy nutshell version of the plot. Jackson's character will be Louisiana plantation worker, drifter and ex-con Denver Moore, while the role of his opposite number, toff Dallas art dealer Ron Hall, remains to be cast. Might we respectfully suggest Kevin Spacey, for a Negotiator reunion? ...
