What happens when you gaze at yourself in a muddled puddle of self-reflection? For filmmaking duo Bill and Turner Ross, it’s all about turning the camera inward to look outward, courtesy of the cinema verité style.
The Ross Brothers’ latest feature, “Gasoline Rainbow,” follows five teenagers from small-town Oregon as they embark on one final adventure together after high school: reaching the Pacific coast, 500 miles away. Along the way, the group encounters outsiders from the fringes of the American West and discovers that the contours of their lives will be set by trails they blaze themselves. They are forgotten kids from a forgotten town, but they have their freedom and they have each other, hurtling toward an unknowable future — and The Party at the End of the World.

For the perpetually impecunious (see: poor) indie filmmaker, a well-executed short or feature project can often be your best passport to the larger world. Left to our own scant devices, our calendars are unlikely to fill up with myriad jaunts to such exotic locales as Cannes, Venice, Locarno or, erm, Arkansas. But with a piping hot Dcp in hand, you not have not just an excuse to visit such places but an invitation. And few American cities are quite as dreamily summoned in the mind as day-glow Miami. After all: if it’s good enough for LeBron James, it’s good enough for us.
For 41 years, the Miami Film Festival has been showcasing innovative, inclusive work from new and emerging independent creators worldwide. Unsurprisingly, many of said creators are our own beloved Film Independent Fellows. In fact, a whopping 38 Fi Fellows will be in the Magic City next week to show new work,...

It’s not as if New Orleans necessarily needs to gift the world any more culture than it already has. But the birthplace of jazz music, Gullah cuisine and writers ranging from Anne Rice to John Kennedy Toole is quickly becoming—in addition to its many other virtues—something of an indie film hotspot. From platforming local creators to providing a can’t-miss stop along the international auteur circuit, Nola’s film festival scene is in the middle of an epic flex.
Chief among these, the city’s namesake New Orleans Film Festival has been bringing the best independent cinema to the ochre shores of the Mississippi River since 1989. This week, Film Independent’s Festival Visions series—our ongoing spotlight of the best programming picks from regional and specialty festivals nationwide—continues, with an online showing of the Lgbtqia+ short documentary House of Tulip, screening online and for free, July...

Elysian Film Group has debuted a new trailer for his follow-up to Benh Zeitlin’s Oscar-nominated film ‘Beasts of The Southern Wild’, ‘Wendy.’
The film follows the classic story of Peter Pan which is wildly reimagined in this ragtag epic starring a stunning cast of young actors, headlined by Devin France in the title role of Wendy.
While lost on a mysterious island where ageing and time have come unglued, Wendy must fight to save her family, her freedom, and the joyous spirit of youth from the deadly peril of growing up.

Directed and written by Zeitlin alongside his sister Eliza Zeitlin, he wanted to capture and reinvent the childhood myth that had captivated him and his sister. Rather than Peter’s story, their tale focuses on Wendy who experiences Neverland but has to leave it behind.

Oscar ballots will be in the hands of AMPAS voters on March 5, and they’ll have until March 10 to turn them in. All the predicting, theorizing and prognosticating have led to this crucial six-day period when the nearly 10,000 Academy members make their choices among the year’s achievements. As we head into this critical period, in a year defined by a global pandemic that has changed the way we look at cinema, we’re still reminded that movies are well worth celebrating.
Streamers provided access to some of the best films of 2020. This year, no matter what AMPAS ends up selecting as its nominees for the 93rd Academy Awards, most films will be widely available for consumers to watch before the ceremony. Cinema continues to evolve, and we can’t stop what’s coming. As with any true cinephile, my choices for what touched me from this extended eligibility are personally mine.

Sundance Institute CEO Keri Putnam was a giant anime character. Filmmaker Rodney Ascher looked like a pink mummy. Near the bar, a blue-hued actor towered over a group of avatars, dressed as the Greek god Zeus, and taught the crowd how to fly.

Directed by Miriam Guttman, the doc is an investigation into the revelation that a respected Dutch fertility doctor, Dr. Karbaat, clandestinely inseminated over 65 of his patients with his own semen. The series examines how he got away with it for so long and the repercussions that haunt those affected: the emotional trauma of coming to terms with a changed, uncertain genetic origin.
The show was produced by Monique Busman and Michiel van Erp for De Familie Film & TV and co-produced by Dutch broadcaster Vpro.

‘So Late So Soon’: Oscilloscope Acquires Bittersweet Docu Spotlighting Artists Jackie And Don Seiden
Exclusive: Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired worldwide rights to the Daniel Hymanson-directed So Late So Soon, a bittersweet documentary that paints an endearing portrait of Chicago artists Jackie and Don Seiden.
The film, which made its world premiere at the 2020 True/False Film Festival, follows Jackie and Don who are half a century into their marriage as they approach the fragility of their elderly lives in their own distinct ways. Jackie, notorious for her unbounded energy, is constantly on the move, inspired to create works of art while also maintaining the couple’s multistory, brightly-painted Victorian house. Don steadily sketches in his notebook while facing alarming interruptions to his health. Director Daniel Hymanson filmed the Seidens, on-and-off for five years, capturing the hardships of aging as well as a view into enduring companionship, in this charming character study.
“I’ve been such a huge fan of Oscilloscope for years,” said Hymanson.

For instance, the top prize was decided by director Scott Cooper, producer Josh Penn, cinematographer Rachel Morrison, and actors Uma Thurman and Aisha Tyler.

Details on Drake’s commitment here are thin but Altitude said it hoped the film is “the first of many projects” on which it collaborates with the Canadian rapper. Neon made Reinaldo Marcus Green’s feature directorial debut Monsters And Men one of the bigger pickups of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where the drama had its world premiere in competition. Now comes the first trailer for the pic, which the distributor is aiming for a fall awards-season release.
Starring John David Washington, Anthony Ramos and Kelvin Harrison Jr., the plot centers on the tight-knit community of Bed-Stuy in Brooklyn, where a young father witnesses the police shooting of an unarmed black man. The film is told through differing views: by the bystander who filmed the shooting, the black police officer, and a high-school baseball phenom inspired to take a stand. Nicole Beharie, Jasmine Cephas Jones Chante Adams and Rob Morgan co-star.
As Green said at Deadline’s Sundance Studio, although this film focuses on one incident the piece itself is inspired by the ongoing epidemic of race-related police brutality cases.
