YouTube Originals is bolstering its originals slate with a slew of unscripted orders including the acquisition of a Tom Petty feature documentary.
The streamer has acquired the rights to Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free: The Making of Wildflowers, exploring how the musician made his seminal album. The film, which is directed by Mary Wharton, features ever-before-seen footage drawn from a newly discovered archive of 16mm film as well as new interviews with album co-producers Rick Rubin and Heartbreaker Mike Campbell, along with original Heartbreaker Benmont Tench.
The film first debuted in March as an Official SXSW 2021 Selection, winning the festival’s Audience Award, and will see its theatrical release on October 20 for a one-night global celebration via Trafalgar Releasing.
Launching on YouTube later this year, it is produced by Peter Afterman with executive producers Dan Braun, Mary Wharton and Adria Petty and presented by Inaudible Films, Warner Music Entertainment and Warner Records.

12 Years A Slave | The Railway Man | Delivery Man | After Tiller | 1: Life On The Limit | Exposed: Beyond Burlesque
12 Years A Slave (15)
(Steve McQueen, 2013, Us/UK) Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Lupita Nyong'o, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano. 134 mins
What with the acclaim, the awards buzz and the harrowing subject matter, finally seeing McQueen's slavery drama now feels like a duty. But this is an "issue movie" unlike any other, both in its deliberate formalism and its under-represented history. Along with Ejiofor's abductee, we're fully immersed in a slavery system so brutally oppressive even the expression of suffering is forbidden. McQueen gives us a study of institutionalised cruelty, the forces propping it up and its innumerable victims.
The Railway Man (15)
(Jonathan Teplitzky, 2013, Aus/UK) Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman. 116 mins
Middle-aged romance is rapidly derailed by events of the past in this earnest bio-drama, as Kidman spurs Scotsman Firth to revisit his Asian prisoner-of-war days,...

More often than not, films gain a cult following purely by accident. That’s almost the point. However every now and again filmmakers present their work with the sole intention of achieving that cult status, and it simply feels too contrived, defeating the object somewhat. Henry Saine’s Bounty Killer can be accused of just that, in a film that is full to the brim of corny one-liners. There are only so many you can implement before they lose their impact – and this feels like a screenplay made up of t-shirt slogans.
Set in the not too distant future, we enter into a post-apocalyptic society where corporations have displaced the government. However a rebellion is sparked amongst the people, and the Council of Nine have issued death warrants for all of the guilty, white collar criminals. Those undertaking the murders are the Bounty Killers – a heroic and adulated group whose...

I hadn’t heard of Bounty Killer till a couple of YouTubers (Coolduder, Wetmovie1) mentioned the film in their usual DVD and Blu-ray round-ups. The title alone intrigued me, after all I had enjoyed the previous “bounty hunter” flicks I’d seen: Michael Dudikoff’s Bounty Hunters and Bounty Hunters 2: Hardball and the recent Trish Stratus (WWE Diva) starring Bounty Hunters. So I was bound to enjoy a film that not only featured bounty hunters, but was called Bounty Killer, right?
In a word. Yes! In fact two words: Hell Yes!
Based on a short film of the same name (and also the graphic novel adaptation) by Jason Dodson and Henry Saine, Bounty Killer is set 20 years after corporations took over the world s governments.

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! If you see something you like, click on the title to buy it from Amazon. Bounty Killer The future! Corporations grew too powerful and went to war with each other with the real victims being the rest of society. A council was organized to issue bounties on the heads of CEOs responsible for the apocalypse, and Drifter (Matthew Marsden) and Mary Death (Christian Pitre) are two of the best bounty killers to answer the call. Throw in an army of Juggalo-like Gypsies, Gary Busey, and the female Terminator from Rise of the Machines (Kristanna Loken), and the two bounty killers are forced into a surprising fight for their own lives. This low budget, post-apocalyptic action/comedy packs more fun, creativity, and clear love for movies into its ninety minute run-time than far too many big Hollywood productions manage these days. Sure there’s overly excessive CGI abuse (some of the...

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Arc Entertainment. Director: Henry Saine. Writers: Jason Dodson, Colin Ebeling, and Henry Saine. Cast: Matthew Marsden, Kristanna Loken, Christian Pitre, Barak Hardley, Abraham Benrubi and Gary Busey. This film critic is not a fan of writing negative reviews. However, reviews can sometimes serve as a warning, to steer viewers away from certain material. Henry Saine's (The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu) Bounty Killer is a film that most film fans will want to skip. Based on a 2013 comic book, Bounty Killer offers silly situations in a future post-apocalyptic landscape. The film also offers very little in its characters, while trying to trump up its shortfalls by offering almost every genre in the book. This mishmash of story ideas and weak characters creates for a very uninspiring ninety-two minutes. The story is built on a very weak foundation. The...

With a simplistic title like Bounty Killer, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this indie action flick, but the film quickly asserted itself as a heavy hitting, big-gun-toting action extravaganza unlike anything I could have predicted. Henry Saine’s dystopian universe is created with a very eccentric eye for detail and a gutsiness comparable to a swinging pair of brass balls, as the bullets quickly started flying and blood started splattering against the walls like a freakin’ Jackson Pollock painting. Ignore the “independent” classification this film might have, because Saine has created a film that stacks up against the year’s biggest blockbuster productions – and kicks some of their asses in the process.

It’s that time of year again… The leaves are changing color and falling to the ground, every single product has a pumpkin scented/flavored option, the stores are filled with monster masks and skeletal decorations, and horror fans all over are rejoicing and counting the days until our version of Christmas; Halloween. While I love all of these things just as much as all of you, there is one other reason that I look forward to October each year, and that is the Toronto After Dark Film Festival, which kicked off last night.
For more comprehensive info on exactly what the festival is all about, you can either check out our previous coverage of past years’ fests, or you can visit the festival’s official website. I understand completely, why there has been no marketing behind this film, but unfortunately it has done it a great disservice. A quick glance at the PR behind Bounty Killer, would lead you to believe that it is on the same level as many of the other straight-to-video action fare you see coming out of Anchor Bay, Universal, Lionsgate etc. Even the final poster/cover art is horrendous. After digging a little deeper, and learning that it was directed by Henry Saine, that previously directed The Last Lovecraft, a film I’m quite fond of, I decided to give it a shot. I’ll admit upfront, that it was helped by the fact that the film is now screening at this year’s Toronto After Dark Film Festival, and allows me to assist Jeff in his coverage, to somewhat lessen the load. Click here to find his recounting of the first day of the festival.

Thanks for taking the time to talk with us, Henry. How long have you had the idea for Bounty Killer? Was this a world you wanted to get into ever since you first caught Mad Max (or another post apocalyptic-movie)?

Bounty Killer feels like the adaptation of a video game that doesn't exist. Inspired by the likes of Mad Max (movie) and Fallout (game), it tells of a desert dystopia in which soldiers of fortune are paid handsomely to knock off the corporate goons responsible for the world's sad state with expectably gruesome results. Unlike many of its ilk, however, Henry Saine's B-movie is more enjoyable for its eccentricities and affectations—the paper called Wasteland News, a condo development with the tagline "Stop surviving, start living," and a shadowy group called the Council of Nine are all memorable details—than for the lopped-off heads and fountains of blood that typify its action sequences. The characters carrying out these deeds are cardboard cutout...

Right from the start, you'll likely know whether you want to continue down the hilarious and overly violent schlock that is part of Bounty Killer's charm. We are given a world where bounty killers--bounty hunters with the license to kill off the white-collar criminals in a post-apocalyptic wasteland of the United States--are rock stars and adored. They appear on magazine covers, have groupies, and reap wealthy rewards for dispatching the bad guys that ruined the world's economy and environment. Is it a film that has more relevance today than ever before? Well, maybe it would have been better timed a few years back after the stock market crash, but writers Jason Dodson, Colin Ebeling, and Henry Saine were likely working on the original idea...

With zombies being everywhere this day, it's pretty hard to do something clever with the subgenre, especially in short films where budgets and time can be ambition's biggest enemies.
Apparently no one told filmmaking couple Ashleigh Nichols and Eddie Beasley that because the pair's latest short film - Summer of the Zombies - manages to deliver a charming and clever look at the zombie apocalypse through the eyes of a Vegetarian zombie named Summer, whose veggie-loving tendencies are so deep-rooted, they stick with the ghoul even as she wanders the streets as an aimless ghoul in search of food.

H. P. Lovecraft was no fan of the cinema.
In a 1933 letter to poet Richard Morse (quoted in the book Lurker in the Lobby: A Guide to the Cinema of H. P. Lovecraft), he wrote:
"I shall never permit anything bearing my signature to be banalised and vulgarised into the flat, infantile twaddle which passes for 'horror tales' amongst radio and cinema audiences."
One can only imagine the venom that would have flowed from Lovecraft's pen had he seen The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu. Writer/actor/producer Devin McGinn's heart was in the right place, but this attempt to merge Lovecraftian horror with Shaun of the Dead humor fails miserably.
The film opens with Cthulhu cultists finding one part of the key that will open the gates of R'lyeh.

As many of you know from reading our site and listening to our podcast, we are pretty big H.P. Lovecraft fans. Fans to the point we will check out anything and everything that is influenced by his stories or are as close to an adaptation as you can get. So when news came around that there was a comedic horror film coming out that was influenced by Mr. Lovecraft, our interest was definitely through the roof. Considering films from Re-Animator to Hellboy mix a bit of comedy into the horror, which is usually what Lovecraft did within his tales, it seemed like the most logical step into making a film. But does it work?
The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu tells the story of Jeff (Kyle Davis), an office worker who just wants to live a normal life and his friend Charlie (Devin McGinn) who is always getting him in trouble.

Henry Saine is the director behind The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu a film that mixes the humor of such Gen X styled comedies such as Reality Bites, Clueless, Floundering, etc. It then throws in some sci-fi with, of course, some horror. After all, this does have Lovecraft in the title and you couldn't do this type of film without some horror elements. Saine was all to bring a seamless quality to the narrative of the film making it so that the various story tangents flowed with one another, instead of feeling jerky or uneven. In The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu, Jeff an ordinary guy that is stuck at a dead end job with a boring life, but when a strange old man gives him an Ancient relic and tells him that he is the last bloodline of H.P. Lovecraft, He and his friend Charlie embark on an adventure...

The line between homage and parody is straddled in this love letter that aims to do to Lovecraftian horror what Shaun of the Dead did to Romero zombies, though while Edgar Wright balanced the comedy with authentic zombie movie moments, director Henry Saine co-opts B-movie gore that doesn't call upon the atmosphere of Lovecraft stories at all.
We get a pretty snappy bro comedy complete with a Zach Galifianakis stand-in for the most part (the back cover pitches this as "The Hangover meets Evil Dead"), about the last descendant of Lovecraft and his comic book-obsessed slacker friends being tasked by a Miskatonic University professor to defend a relic that would open the sunken city of R'lyeh—Lovecraft fans know why that's bad—against Cult of Cthulhu members, but the story, action and especially scares rely too much on tired horror-comedy practices, especially considering the rich mythology it's supposedly mining from.

I could not be more excited to see this film, the final product of a project that nerds who appreciate Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have been hearing about for years. On purpose I’ve been trying to avoid anything and everything about this movie but it’s been hard because it has been everywhere. An alien, Comic-Con, a road trip, Jason Bateman, the laundry list of good things brewing within this movie’s run time is just scrumptious.
So, if you live in the Phoenix area and can make it to a screening on March 15 then send me your name to Christopher_Stipp@yahoo.com and I’ll get you entered to win a pair of passes to see this before everyone else.

Director: Henry Saine
Writer: Devin McGinn
Silently released to DVD on Feb 15th in North America (and soon to come on April 4 in the UK) is The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu. This horror-comedy is a welcome change, when compared to previous attempts at re-igniting popular culture’s fascination with H.P. Lovecraft's seminal works.
If there’s ever a definitive appropriate nod of approval, it's found in the opening slate that sets the tone for this film: The world is indeed comic, but the joke is on mankind.
With this release are the usual extras. There is a director’s commentary, an extended scene and a gallery of on-set photos to enjoy. The commentary on the extended scene provides some insight to why one version was used over another and with this scene are storyboards. They replace scenes of potential carnage, if the budget allowed it. Had this production found some additional investors,...

Out on DVD today from Dark Sky Films, The Last Lovecraft: Relic Of Cthulhu, directed by Henry Saine, is yet another filmic portrayal of the late H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos. Cthulhu has been chilling snug in his sweet R’lyeh pad for far too long, and thanks to his loyal cult of devoutly fishy followers, he is about to be called to the stage for an epic battle royale.

Following last evening’s raucous Cinefamily La premiere of director Henry Saine’s wickedly funny horror-comedy The Last Lovecraft: The Relic of Cthulhu, the director, along with the feature film’s screenwriter, producer and actor Devin McGinn and cast members Kyle Davis, Barak Hardley and Gregg Lawrence, among others, assembled for an audience Q&A to chat about the film.
Hosted by Devin Feraci at The Silent Movie Theatre, the filmmakers took time to wax about the project, which was shot over the course of twenty-one days in thirteen locations for the relatively low budget of $170,000 (astonishing, given the quality of the finished flick, which is sure to more than please fans of its similar brethren, the laugh-out-loud flicks Shaun of the Dead and Tucker and Dale vs. Evil).
McGinn riffed during the Q&A on the potential for a Lovecraft trilogy, a comic book film tie-in and his adoration for all things Lovecraft,...

After what seems like ages, director Henry Saine’s “The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu” is set to scare up some business on VOD and DVD on February 15th, 2011. In order to help remind folks that the flick is ready and willing to entertain their bloated horror-hungry posteriors, distributor Dark Sky Films has dropped another trailer for this insanely promising project over at Vimeo. All of the necessary elements for crafting an entertaining horror comedy are there, so unless they just fumble the cinematic ball in a spectacular way, I fully expect this thing to exceed my expectations. On your way, out, be sure to thank Horror-Movies.ca for bringing this to my attention. function getVideo() { var so = new SWFObject("http://cdn.springboard.gorillanation.com/storage/xplayer/yo033.swf", "mplayer", "590", "375", "8", "#000000"); so.addParam("wmode","transparent"); so.addParam("swliveconnect", "true"); so.addParam("allowscriptaccess", "always"); so.addParam("allowfullscreen", "true"); so.addVariable("pid", "byhw013"); so.

A desk jockey becomes a slayer of aquatic demons in this blend of horror, fantasy and comedy from director Henry Saine. Jeff (Kyle Davis) is a regular guy with a dull job in an office complex who is certain there's nothing remarkable about himself. But Jeff learns he's wrong when he's approached by an eccentric old man and told he's surviving relative of the great horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. That might seem interesting in itself, but there's more -- Jeff is informed Lovecraft's tales of terror weren't entirely fictional, and the Cthulhu, the evil fish-like humanoids that figured in so many of his stories, are real and poised to emerge from the sea and take over the world. After waiting for what seems like ages, director Henry Saine’s inspired horror/comedy “The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu” is finally coming to DVD courtesy of Dark Sky Films. As a fan of most things Lovecraft — I’ll refrain from commenting on some of the lamer adaptations of this admittedly peculiar author’s body of work — this promising little flick has been on my radar for quite some time. Sadly, I’d almost completely forgotten about the title, that is, until I bore witness to the trailer on the “Bitter Feast” DVD, which just so happens to be another Dark Sky Films. Imagine that! Out of those films, Auff handed out a dozen awards.
Auff gave out awards to both shorts and features in the categories of Best Narrative, Best Horror, Best Documentary. Plus, they gave out awards such as Best Exploitation, Best Experimental, Audience Award, Director’s Choice and more.
Best Experimental went to a film directed nearly 30 years ago that’s just being seen now. That film is Window on Your Present by Cinqué Lee, brother of Spike Lee.
