Would “The Sopranos” finale have been as impactful if it hadn’t included Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’”? And what would “Grey’s Anatomy” be without its frequent use of the Snow Patrol song “Chasing Cars”? These and many more unforgettable musical TV moments all occurred before the establishment of the Best Music Supervision Emmy category. Since 2017, the award has served the purpose of honoring the people who enhance TV shows by incorporating existing songs into episodes and thus stirring up viewers’ emotions.

On YouTube, the Emmy-nominated song from HBO’s “Euphoria” by the show’s star and producer Zendaya and composer Labrinth “I’m Tired” has amassed over 17 million views. On Spotify, its streaming tally sits at 81 million, and on TikTok, scores of covers live on the platform. It’s a testament to the impact of the show’s music, and when it came time to score and soundtrack its second season, Labrinth looked to the fans and asked what they wanted to hear. He and Emmy-nominated music supervisor Adam Leber talked to Variety about the show’s musical journey.
How did the success of the music from season one and themes inform your approach to the music of season two?
Labrinth: I guess, “Don’t fuck it up, you’re on a good run.” Creator Sam Levinson and I spoke about this being the next stage for Zendaya’s character, Rue,...

It’s late on a Friday afternoon and as the working week draws to a close, music supervisor Jen Malone is invigorated. The cause for celebration? An email she had been waiting for just arrived, marking the last clearance for a song to be used in the season finale of HBO’s “Euphoria.”
Malone’s needle drops for the music-heavy series helped make “Euphoria” a social-media phenomenon, trending on a weekly basis as two million-plus tune in. Those viewers are also holding their phones toward the screen with the Shazam app open, looking to capture every song.
Malone — who has been nominated for two Guild of Music Supervisors Awards, both in the same category: music supervision for film budgeted under $5 million, for “Malcolm & Marie” and “Zola” (alongside Nicole Weisberg and Mandi Collier) — spends Sunday evenings glued to HBO herself. Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not seen the first six episodes of “Euphoria” Season 2.
Labrinth doesn’t necessarily consider himself a composer.
“I know I am, but I don’t look at myself that way,” the 33-year-old musician tells Variety. “I’m just transmitting energy that I hear and see and feel.”
Indeed, when most people think of a score, they likely hear music that is purely instrumental and orchestral. But Labrinth’s “Euphoria” compositions push that envelope, often incorporating his lush vocals and quick-witted raps. Though it’s atypical, the score fits perfectly in the world of East Highland, where teenagers navigate a dark world of lust, drugs and violence. Labrinth gives credit to show creator Sam Levinson for seeing “dimensions in me that maybe I didn’t see,” and views himself as a songwriter, producer and composer rolled into one, akin to Burt Bacharach.

For a show that doesn’t look like anything else on TV, “Euphoria” still has a solid foundation. Through the eyes of one main character, the viewer gets to see a group of high school students dealing with all the challenges of modern teenage life.
It would make sense for the music of “Euphoria” to draw solely on what its characters would stream. Make a separate playlist for each student and pick from a giant soup of songs as each party or late-night battle with anxiety demands.
Instead, the music of “Euphoria” built its own cultural cachet largely because of the organic way it weaves through the series. Its songs draw from different eras and styles. The score introduces some playfulness and bounce amidst an encroaching uncertainty.

The entertainment industry’s “unsung heroes” — as Quentin Tarantino has described Mary Ramos for her significant contribution to his entire filmography — celebrated the outstanding achievements of their peers at the 10th annual Guild of Music Supervisors Awards on Thursday night at the Wiltern. And who can blame these hardworking but vastly underpaid professionals for tooting their own horns since the Motion Picture Academy refuses to validate their work with an Oscar category? Coincidentally, the winners also helped to shine a light on critically acclaimed films featuring black casts that were snubbed by the Academy, much like music supervisors themselves.
The big news of the night: Women rock! Unlike every other Hollywood award show, the majority of winners — 10 out of 15, in fact — were female. (But then this may be the only guild that has nearly achieved gender parity among members and women outnumber men as board members.) “I met Quentin Tarantino 28 years ago and after that,...

In the ten years since the Guild of Music Supervisors was formed, the organization has come a long way. The Gms has its own presence during awards season, as it hosts its own annual awards ceremony on Feb. 6 at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles. The “Womanizer” singer’s manager, Adam Leber, recently told Medium.com that Brit does require some help with vocals for her “Piece of Me” shows at Planet Hollywood.
"To put on the show that she puts on, it’s virtually impossible to sing the entire time and do what she does. She’s singing on every song, basically, when she has the ability to sing. There’s no way you can dance for 90 minutes straight and sing the entire time," Adam explained.
The news is not that surprising since Miss Spears has been called out several times since December for messing up her lip sync timing.
This news hasn't hurt ticket sales, though. The 32-year-old just renewed her contract with Planet Hollywood and will continue performing...

This story first appeared in the June 20 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. The June 6 announcement that transportation startup Uber Technologies had raised $1.2 billion on a $17 billion valuation is good news for the slew of Hollywood investors who helped fund the company in its early days. Sure, their stakes are small and undisclosed, but when the San Francisco-based ride-sharing company makes its inevitable public market debut, backers including William Morris Endeavor, whose co-ceo Ari Emanuel was an early user, and music managers Troy Carter and Adam Leber could expect big returns. The past month or so has been incredibly eventful for Adam Green's "Holliston." The show tragically lost one cast member, released Season 2 on Blu-ray, and then got the news that the network it airs on is shutting down...
Creator Adam Green and co-star Joe Lynch sat down with Dread Central recently for a massive interview all about "Holliston."
Show creator and star Adam Green talked about his love for the "Holliston" series. "It's my favorite thing I've ever done," Green said. "It's my best work to date, and I think a lot of the people involved in the show would say the same thing. If you like Season 1, I think Season 2 really blows it away. I think with any sitcom the second season is usually considered to be funnier and better than the first, mainly because you know the characters, you know the world, you know the tone. And...

Like his latest film, "A.C.O.D.," Adam Scott is funny, but he can talk about some pretty serious stuff.
Take, for example, his latest interview with MTV News' Josh Horowitz for the newest episode of After Hours.
During an Up Close segment, Adam and Josh work through a bunch of troublesome areas, like how to tell a child that you're getting a divorce and whether Batman could ever really beat Superman. (No, he can't.)
Check it all out in the latest episode of After Hours with Adam Scott.

Washington, Sep 16: Britney Spears' much-hyped new single 'Work Bitch' has been leaked in "poor quality" online.
The 31-year-old popstar had been teasing her fans via a countdown clock on her website to mark the release of her track, Contactmusic reported.
The 'Toxic' hitmaker took to Twitter to express her discontent saying that she woke up in the morning to see that a low quality of the song was already leaked.
Spears and her team had decided to give her fans the genuine version of the song so they could listen to it for the first time the way it was intended.
Spear's manager, Adam Leber, also posted.

In light of her new single leaking online a full day earlier than its intended release, Britney Spears is steering into the skid and releasing "Work B****" early.
The pop icon had been teasing fans about the release of the song for weeks via a countdown clock on her website. "Work B****" was originally scheduled to launch on Monday (Sept. 16), but a low-quality version hit the web on Sunday (Sept. 15).
"Woke up today and saw that a low quality version of Work B**** had leaked :(," Spears tweeted.
Spears' manager Adam Leber says it is "disheartening that one bad apple had to spoil our release for the entire fan community." The song's radio and iTunes debuts of the official cut were moved up to 3 p.m. Et on Sunday (Sept. 15).

The dog days of August are almost over, which means blockbusters are taking a backseat to all those lovely prestige pictures the studios trot out when the leaves change and Meryl Streep gets her thirst for gold like the Oscar vampire she is.
Heavy hitters like Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lawrence, George Clooney, Josh Brolin, Michael Fassbender, Tom Hanks, Kristen Wiig, Chris Hemsworth and the ubiquitous Benedict Cumberbatch all pop up in multiple movies on our annual list of the Fall's best and brightest. Fan favs like Thor (as in "The Mighty"), Ron Burgundy, Katniss Everdeen, Jack Ryan and Machete chop their way back to the big screen with much fanfare, but this time of year is all about the Oscar bait — a Golden Globe simply won't do.
Prepare accordingly for the season below. (And also check out Film.com's Ultimate Fall Movie Preview, plus all kinds of good stuff on MTV's Fall Preview hub.

J.J. Abrams‘s production company has purchased the rights to adapt TV legend Rod Serling‘s last, uncompleted screenplay, The Stops Along the Way. It is hoped a network will order an adaptation of Stops that turns the teleplay into a mini-series. The details of the story are currently secret.
A magic-performing detective, perhaps? Please, Simpsons?
Will Arnett is bringing his voice to The Simpsons, TVLine reports. He’ll play an FBI detective who goes after Homer for illegally downloading a movie.
The upcoming season of Drop Dead Diva may be gaining a hunky new guardian angel but it’s losing its hunky boss as Josh Samberg is leaving the legal dramedy.
I guess Kim is going to have to take over all the grumpiness at Harrison & Parker.
Considering all the characters who have made a return appearance on Mad Men, Vulture asks, when will we get to see Sal again?...
