Nominations for the 39th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards were announced today by Amber Iman and George Abud, two stars of Broadway’s “Lempicka.” The Lortels honor outstanding achievement in Off-Broadway theater. The 2024 ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 5 at NYU Skirball Center. The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by Tdf.
It’s common for productions to begin their life Off-Broadway before transferring to the Main Stem, so many of this year’s Tony Awards hopefuls are among the list of Lortel nominations. Chief among these contenders is “Hell’s Kitchen,” the semi-autobiographical musical from Alicia Keys. That tuner garnered five Lortel nominations. These include Best Musical, Best Choreography for Camille A. Brown, a Lead Performer bid for Maleah Joi Moon, and Featured Performer bids for Shoshana Bean and Kecia Lewis. All performance categories at the Lortel Awards are gender neutral.

The "Twilight Zone" episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet", directed by Richard Donner, remains to this day one of the show's most popular. Scripted by Richard Matheson and starring a pre-"Star Trek" William Shatner, "Nightmare" follows a man, Robert Wilson, recently released from a sanitarium due to a mental breakdown. On a flight back home, Robert peers out the plane window into the rainy night and sees a massive, furry gremlin standing on the wing of the plane. The gremlin, in true gremlin spirit, pries up a metal panel on the wing and begins futzing with the machinery inside. The gremlin might very well cause the plane to crash. When Robert tries to alert anyone about the gremlin, they all assume he's imagining it, once again succumbing to his nerves.
Matheson first conceived of "Nightmare" in a 1961 short story, published in his anthology "Alone By Night." The story has become...

I often lambast the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the "same old, same old" feeling of its movies and television — so I feel a little hypocritical calling the revival series "Daredevil: Born Again" my most anticipated Marvel project.
"Daredevil" ran for three seasons on Netflix from 2015-2018, but was canceled afterward. Like its sister shows, it was a casualty of Marvel and Netflix decoupling from their creative partnership. However, since it was the most consistently acclaimed of the Marvel/Netflix shows and the title character has the biggest built-in audience, "Daredevil" will be born again on Disney+.
As for why I'm excited? "Daredevil" was counterprogramming to the quippy fluff of the MCU movies, with a darker tone and more violence. Plus, what can I say, I'm a fan of the character. If you aren't familiar, Matt Murdock is a blind lawyer blessed with enhanced senses to compensate. At night, he patrols...

Cuba is roughly 1,300 miles away, but in a rehearsal space in downtown Manhattan, it doesn’t feel all that far. Cradling their percussion instruments, horns, and guitars, a ten-piece band of musicians, some from Latin America, preparing to play a sinuous piece of son Cubano, as a theater crew — director, writer, actors and choreographers — hover around.

There have been some signs that Paramount Pictures might be taking a different angle with future “Transformers” movies post-Michael Bay as previously seen with Steven DeKnight‘s quirky 1980s-set “Bumblebee” taking a much less noisy approach and allowing audiences to settle in rather than being bombarded with incoherent explosions.

Deadline has confirmed that a new Transformers feature is in the works at Paramount though this new project is said to be separate from its main Transformer franchise, which includes the five installments directed by Michael Bay as well as the Bumblebee spin-off.
Angel Manuel Soto, who made a splash with his Sundance and HBO Max drama Charm City King, is attached to direct the standalone film based on the popular Hasbro brand. Marco Ramirez, the former showrunner and co-creator of the Netflix Marvel series The Defenders, will pen the screenplay. The pic is in the early stage of development and no details on the plot were made available at this time.
Late last year, Deadline broke the news that Creed 2 director Steven Caple Jr. was set to direct the seventh Transformers pic in the reinvented universe.

Paramount is expanding its “Transformers” business.
Marco Ramirez (showrunner for Netflix’s Marvel series “The Defenders”) has signed to write a script for a new, standalone “Transformers” movie based on the Hasbro toy brand, with “Charm City Kings” director Angel Manuel Soto attached to direct.
The project is still in its earliest stages, with Ramirez taking a fresh approach that will not connect to the “Transformers” movies directed by Michael Bay or the “Bumblebee” spin-off directed by Travis Knight. That series remains alive and well, however, with Steven Caple Jr. (“Creed II”) directing a movie set in the “Transformers” Bay-verse that is scheduled for June 2022.
Like practically every other studio in the streaming era, Paramount is clearly invested in growing its “Transformers” franchise to feed the relentless demand for marquee content. After back-to-back billion dollar global takes with 2011’s “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” and 2014’s “Transformers: Age of Extinction,...

October 15 marks the end of Hispanic Heritage Month and some of the top creators in TV and film are punctuating it with a demand for change when it comes to Latinx representation — and they have every right to voice their demands. In fact, it is long overdue.
In an open letter to Hollywood over 270 Latinx showrunners, creators, and TV and feature writers, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tanya Saracho, Gloria Calderon-Kellett, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Steven Canals, John Leguizamo, Linda Yvette-Chavez, Carolina Paiz, Marco Ramirez, Javier Grillo-Marxuach and more are calling for systemic change in the entertainment industry.
The letter starts: “As we come to the end of Hispanic Heritage Month in the midst of a global pandemic and continued racial injustice, many of us in the Latinx community have found it difficult to celebrate. Inspired by the activism of the Black and Indigenous communities, many of whom also identify as Latinx, we stand...

As if horror maestro Jordan Peele doesn’t have enough on his plate, Blumhouse Productions CEO Jason Blum has nixed the idea of a sequel to Peele’s 2017 Academy Award-winning horror smash hit “Get Out” — for now. Speaking with The Observer (via The Playlist), “Get Out” producer Blum said that as much as he’d be delighted to see a followup from Peele to the social thriller about affluent white people body-snatching African Americans to live forever, that’s up to Peele.
While Blum, back in 2018, did say that Peele was flirting with the idea of a sequel, he has just clarified that it was a case of “wishful thinking.” Blum said, “I think that was taken out of context. I think what I said and what I would still say is, I would love to make a ‘Get Out’ sequel, but we would only do it if Jordan wanted...

Word this afternoon has Warner Bros appointing David Ayer to write and direct a contemporized remake of the action classic The Dirty Dozen. According to the article at Deadline Ayer will be rewriting a script originally drafted by Marco Ramirez. Ayer has already written a few men on a mission screenplays over the years so this should be a piece of cake for him. Sort of fill in the blanks if you will. Reportedly Warner Bros wants to get this shot this coming year so going to someone who has done this many, many times already should make things go quicker. The (original) film involved a top secret mission done...

Exclusive The 60th anniversary of The Twilight Zone arrives next month and the late, great Rod Serling is clearly a man in demand more than four decades after his death at age 50 in 1975.
The Twilight Zone premiered on CBS in the waning months of the Eisenhower era, but more than a half-century later the brand is enjoying a resurgence, as is Serling, the creator, host, producer and social conscience behind the pioneering anthology that specialized in “imaginative tales that are not bound by time or space or the established laws of nature.”
Few shows plant a flag in the public imagination the way The Twilight Zone did. Its name, its theme music, and many of its characters (including monotone narrator Serling) became part of the American lexicon. In 2013, the WGA named it the third-best written show in television history (behind The Sopranos and Seinfeld) while TV Guide ranked it as...

Conversations about diversity and inclusion have become a necessity in Hollywood considering the demand and need for authentic representation in TV and film. Earlier this week, UTA hosted their second Diversity Showrunner Panel with Tanya Saracho (Vida), Aida Croal, Marco Ramirez, Marja-Lewis Ryan (the forthcoming The L-Word sequel) and Aaron Thomas — and they did not hold back.
Moderated by Samie Falvey, who will serve as executive producer of Jessica Gao’s forthcoming comedy pilot at ABC, the panelists shared their stories — some of them horrific, some of them not — about working on shows and how it was like to be “the other” in a writers’ room. As the word “diversity” becomes more of a buzz word and less of an action-oriented initiative in Hollywood, their stories seemed like something out of an Hr training video on...

At UTA’s second annual showrunners panel Tuesday night, several of the people behind series suchas “The Twilight Zone,” “Vida,” and “Swat” discussed the challenges and horrible experiences they faced in writers’ rooms, as well as how they set a better, more inclusive tone in their own.
When asked about her first experience in a writers’ room, “Vida” showrunner Tanya Saracho said that she wasn’t prepared for being “the only person of color in the room” and the abuse which came her way as a result.
“I was crying at lunch and in the bathroom every day,” Saracho said. “In the first hour, my co-worker turns to me and says, ‘You do know you’re the diversity hire right?’…They are great programs in concept, but in implementation you get that kind of s—, so that tainted everything for me.”

The signpost ahead reads “The Twilight Zone,” ushering viewers to a realm that at once feels familiar and yet is almost entirely new. Executive producers Jordan Peele and Simon Kinberg have reimagined Rod Serling’s classic horror/science-fiction/fantasy series from the ‘60s for a whole new generation.
At an event in Hollywood this year, Kinberg revealed why it was the perfect time to bring back the show. “I think the world all of a sudden was in desperate need of ‘The Twilight Zone,’” he said. ‘If you said three, four years ago that like a reality star who had no political experience will be the leader of the free world with access to the nuclear button, you think that’s a crazy ‘Twilight Zone’ episode.”
Kinberg also said that the vision Peele and CBS All Access had meshed with how to tell stories while pushing it to the limits.

Another Marvel-Netflix alum is making the move to Amazon.
Erik Oleson, who was most recently the showrunner on “Daredevil,” has signed an overall deal at Amazon, Variety has learned. The news comes after it was announced in December that “Luke Cage” creator and showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker had signed a similar deal.
“I want to tell the kind of stories that I love: stories that have great characters, thrilling concepts and epic backdrops, but are about something meaningful,” Olseon said. “Stories which allow an audience to think and feel rewarded for watching. Amazon is a perfect home for these stories, and I’m psyched to work alongside the entire Amazon Studios team.”
This also marks a homecoming for Oleson, who previously worked as an executive producer and head writer on the second season of Amazon’s “The Man in the High Castle.”

As you’ve probably heard by now, Netflix’s Daredevil has been cancelled. Ordinarily, the cancellation of a widely loved and critically acclaimed show that’s just aired its best season to date would be a shock, but the writing had been on the wall for this one ever since Iron Fist and Luke Cage were canned. Even so, it’ll surely dismay fans, who’d been so fearful of this particular outcome that the moment the third season aired they began campaigning for the show to receive a fourth season.
Whatever the studios say about the reasons for these shows being cancelled, the truth is pretty easy to figure out. Disney’s about to launch Disney Plus, their own high profile streaming service which will put them into direct competition with Netflix. This means that the partnership that resulted in the Netflix suite of shows would put one arm...

Marvel teases that we have not seen the last of Daredevil on the screen after Netflix cancelled the popular TV series.
In a sign that all is not well between the Mouse House and Netflix on the eve of Disney+’s launch next year, Netflix cancelled Daredevil after three very successful seasons. Considered in many ways the crown jewel of the Netflix/Marvel partnership that spawned a “Defenders universe” that was allegedly connected to the Marvel Studios movies, Daredevil had just released its highly acclaimed third season, and as writer Sam Ernst revealed on Twitter, a Daredevil Season 4 was already being planned out and in the process of writer’s room breakdowns.
However, all is perhaps not lost for the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. While Daredevil’s own Twitter account promised last night that “Justice Never Stops,” Marvel’s own statement Friday offered a sweet sendoff…...

It’s been a dark time for fans of Marvel’s Netflix series of late. In a move that would make Thanos proud of the company’s execs, the number of McU shows on the streaming service has been almost halved with the cancellation of both Iron Fist and Luke Cage. Since then, fans have been worried that the ax will fall on the rest of the series: The Punisher, Jessica Jones and, of course, Daredevil.
Season 3 of Matt Murdock’s show proved to be a critical smash and an instant fan favorite, but from what we understand, it didn’t peak the interest of Netflix users in the way the streaming service was no doubt hoping. Next year, we’ll all be venturing back into a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. And there to guide us through this wondrous land whose boundaries are only that of imagination will be Get Out‘s Jordan Peele, who’ll be helming the reboot of classic 1960s sci-fi anthology series The Twlight Zone for CBS All Access.
The filmmaker shared the first teaser for the upcoming show earlier today and it reveals that Peele will not only produce but also be stepping into the shoes of original creator Rod Serling and deliver the iconic opening monologue. It’s likely that he’ll also narrate each episode in person, much like Serling used to do.
Peele will exec produce the series alongside X-Men‘s Simon Kinberg, while Daredevil‘s Marco Ramirez is on board as showrunner. As for why he thinks we need a new version of The Twilight Zone,...

"That's the signpost up ahead. Your next stop: The Twilight Zone. In 2017, CBS All Access officially announced that they were moving forward with a new Twilight Zone series. Jordan Peele is on board the new series as an executive producer, and in a new teaser video released today, it was also revealed that the Academy Award winning director will host the new take on the classic anthology series that was hosted by the legendary Rod Serling.
Premiering in 2019, the new Twilight Zone series will be hosted and narrated by Peele, who shared his excitement for the new series while also honoring the original show's legacy in this statement (via EW):
“Rod Serling was an uncompromising visionary who not only shed light on social issues of his time, but prophesied issues of ours. I’m honored to carry on his legacy to a new generation of audiences as the gatekeeper of The Twilight Zone.

Upon first hearing the news that The Twilight Zone is getting the dreaded reboot treatment, we were admittedly pretty nervous. Who has the stamina to cross a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity? Who could ever venture into the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge? While Rod Serling will forever remain our Twilight Zone fave, CBS All Access's remake of the classic has officially found a worthy successor: Jordan Peele.
While The Twilight Zone doesn't skew straight horror all the time, we have a feeling the former Key and Peele comedian will be able to expertly nail the show's trademark eerie feel. He's already proved his horror chops tenfold with Get Out, one of this year's best movies, and has another social thriller in the works for 2019.
