Game of Thrones star Kit Harington will return to the London stage in the upcoming production of Jeremy O. Harris’ acclaimed and controversial Slave Play.
Despite the star casting, Slave Play playwright Jeremy O. Harris assures audiences that Harington’s presence will not be a “distraction.”
In an interview with London’s The Guardian, Harris said Harington was emphatic that the ensemble piece not be turned into “the Jon Snow experience” (a reference to Harington’s character on Thrones).
“Kit was saying ‘I don’t want this to be Kit Harington in Slave Play, this is an ensemble play and I’m not even the lead,’” Harris told the newspaper. “He knows the weight his name carries and how that could become a distraction, if we allowed it to be.”

"I'm a private person." "Are you now?" Utopia has unveiled a second trailer for the edgy new film Femme, which first premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival (here's my review) last year. One year later - they're giving this another push before it hits US theaters. It's a remarkably powerful look at the dynamic between a gay man & closeted "tough guy" in London. Jules' life as a drag queen is destroyed by a homophobic attack. But when he re-encounters his attacker, the deeply-closeted Preston in a sauna, he is now presented with a chance to exact revenge. Unrecognizable out of his wig and make-up, Jules infiltrates Preston’s life, and in doing so, discovers power in a different kind of drag. A provocative contemporary thriller. Starring George MacKay as Preston & Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Jules, with a cast including Aaron Heffernan, John McCrea, Nima Taleghani, Antonia Clarke, and Moe Bar-El. I...

How would you handle coming face to face with your attacker? Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping’s “Femme” takes that very question — and the revenge story that follows — to a new level, as it follows a lauded drag artist (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) who crosses paths with his homophobic assaulter (George MacKay) in a gay bathhouse months after his terrible attack. What transpires is an unexpected tale of forgiveness, empathy, and yes, even violence.
The official synopsis for the film reads: “With his performances as Aphrodite Banks, Jules (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) has a place among London’s celebrated drag artists. One night after a show, he steps out to get some cigarettes and is brutally attacked by a man (George MacKay) out with a gang of his friends. Although Jules is able to recover physically, he withdraws from the outside world, traumatized. Months later, he recognizes his attacker by chance in a gay sauna.

The sinewy physicality and febrile intensity that George MacKay brought to films like True History of the Kelly Gang and 1917 gets amplified by ferocious self-loathing in Femme. Playing London thug Preston, festering deep inside the closet, MacKay is matched by Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as a drag queen he viciously attacks, who rises like a phoenix to play a dangerous game of revenge. Expanding their 2021 short film of the same name, debuting directors Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping bring plenty of provocative ideas about queer power dynamics and different forms of drag to the table. But the result is disappointingly sluggish, its payoff ineffectual.
One of the issues holding Femme back is uncertainty of tone. The writer-director team clearly means to maintain ambiguity about the intentions of Stewart-Jarrett’s character Jules, masking his end goal in real or feigned romantic intoxication. But that has the unfortunate side-effect of playing...

Warning: This War of the Worlds review contains spoilers.
Back when we thought the killer robo-dogs were the Invaders, their disregard for human life was easy to understand. They were emotionless machines whose only goal was to methodically clear the planet. Stomp stomp stomp, squelch, stomp stomp stomp, squelch, and so on. Watching them murder children as if they were swatting flies was harsh, but it wasn’t personal.
In season two, it’s personal. We know that the child-killing robo-dogs are the weapons of alt-humans who have no compunction about committing genocide. That revelation sparked its own mystery: just what is the Invaders’ damage? Yes, humans have always done terrible things to each other in the name of survival, but usually, we’re at least conflicted about it. This lot stitch bombs into stomachs and – as Bill’s new companions noted in disgust – kill kids without remorse. Why the lack of fellow-feeling?...

Warning: contains major spoilers for War of the Worlds season one.
The first thing to remember about Howard Overman’s moodily atmospheric War of the Worlds is that if novelist H.G. Wells were here today (and had the required TV streaming package), he probably wouldn’t recognise it as his story. Aside from an alien invasion that wipes out much of Earth’s population, the TV drama had little crossover with Wells’ novel. Instead of tripods with heat rays, it had cyborg dogs with machine gun heads. Instead of a solitary journalist wandering around Woking, it had a large cast of scientists, soldiers, teenagers and others, spread across the UK and France. Instead of dealing with themes of colonial imperialism, it was mostly about family and loss. And instead of red weed-spreading Martians it had… well, that’s the question. Ahead of season two’s arrival on Epix in the...

Filming of Comcast-owned Sky’s comedy show “Brassic” has been temporarily halted after a crew member exhibited coronavirus symptoms, a Sky spokesperson has confirmed to Variety.
“Throughout this time, the safety of our colleagues and customers remains our number one priority,” said the Sky spokesperson. “The ‘Brassic’ production has paused with cast and crew now self-isolating. We will return to production as soon as it is safe to do so.” The cast and crew is expected to quarantine for at least two weeks.
Produced by Calamity Films, “Brassic” is a comedy drama series for Sky One and ITV Global co-created by Danny Brocklehurst and Joseph Gilgun and written by Brocklehurst and Alex Ganley. It stars Gilgun, Michelle Keegan, Damien Molony, Aaron Heffernan, Parth Thakerar, Ryan Sampson, Tom Hanson, Ruth Sheen and Dominic West.
The first season, which aired in 2019, was one of Sky One’s highest-rated comedies of the last decade.

Eerie, desolate sci-fi series War of the Worlds aired in France in late 2019 and earlier this year in the Us and UK. Less an adaptation of the titular H.G. Wells novel than a contemporary riff on the alien invasion thriller by creator Howard Overman, it resolutely ploughed its own furrow. Moody, atmospheric, bleak and emotional, it swapped red weed, tripods and heat rays for a grief-soaked meditation on family and survival… with terrifying alien robot sniper dogs.
The series’ second run commission has been an open secret for months, but the official stamp was announced this weekend, with filming due to begin on Monday the 13th of July after a dry run of the new Covid-19 filming protocol took place last Friday.
Deadline, speaking to Urban Myth producer Johnny Capps reported on the meticulous planning and procedures in place to film the second series in the midst of a global coronavirus pandemic.

War of the Worlds is returning. The sci-fi drama series has been renewed for a second season and the show will be the first UK scripted series to resume production amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
Based on the H.G. Wells novel, the War of the Worlds series begins as astronomers detect a transmission from another galaxy and this serves as definitive proof of intelligent extraterrestrial life. War of the Worlds episode 3 review
In the same way that Cormac McCarthy’s The Road – a fable about a boy and his dad trekking through an apocalyptic landscape – is really an existential scream about the impossibility of protecting our kids after we die (McCarthy dedicated it to the son he fathered at age 65), War of the Worlds is, at heart, about family. Being with them, making the right choices to keep them safe, and inevitably, losing them.
The loss was great in episode three, which did nothing to disqualify War of the Worlds from its current place in the running for Bleakest Drama of the Year. Not only were the streets piled with bodies, but some of those bodies had speaking roles. That’s a rare turn in the apocalypse survivor genre, which has taught us to expect at least a...

Sneak Peek the new TV series, adapting H.G. Well's "War of the Worlds", directed by Gilles Coulier and Richard Clark, starring Gabriel Byrne ("The Keep"), Léa Drucker, Elizabeth McGovern, Adel Bencherif, Natasha Little, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Bayo Gbadamosi, Ty Tennant, Aaron Heffernan, Stephen Campbell Moore, Paul Gorostidi, Stéphane Caillard and Scott James, premiering February 16, 2020 on Epix:
"...when astronomers detect a transmission from another galaxy, it is definitive proof of intelligent extraterrestrial life. The world's population waits for further contact with bated breath.
"They do not have to wait long. Within days, mankind is all but wiped out. Just pockets of humanity are left in an eerily deserted world.
"As alien ships appear in the sky, the survivors ask a burning question – who are these attackers and why are they hell-bent on our destruction?
"This is a story of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances but they are more than just victims in a brutal war.

"Look - I know you hate me now, but do you think some day we could be okay...?" Break Out Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for an Irish indie coming-of-age comedy titled Metal Heart, which is the feature directorial debut of actor Hugh O'Conor. The film is about two twin sisters who couldn't be more unlike each other. There is much rivalry between Emma and Chantal, quite different in just about every way, but all that changes when their mysterious neighbor moves back in. Jordanne Jones stars as Emma, along with Leah McNamara as her sister Chantal, including Moe Dunford, Seán Doyle, Aaron Heffernan, Yasmine Akram, Ali Hardiman, Lucy Parker Byrne, and Sorcha Fahy. This looks quirky and fun and heartfelt. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Hugh O'Conor's Metal Heart, direct from YouTube (via Sa): There is much rivalry between twin sisters Emma (Jordanne Jones) and...

Two warring teenage twins mix like oil and water — and have the emotional battle scars to show for it — in director Hugh O’Conor’s “Metal Heart.” This coming-of-age film delivers plenty of sweet sentiments about sisterhood, kinship, and honesty to its target market, though the package that surrounds it isn’t as unique as one would hope.
Goth girl Emma (Jordanne Jones) and her bubbly blonde sister Chantal (Leah McNamara) are not identical in any way, shape, or form. Emma is withdrawn, forlorn, and pessimistic, whereas her fraternal twin is pretty, popular, and prissy. However, the two must find common ground when their parents abandon them for the summer. It’s the pair’s last hurrah before they go their separate ways: Emma’s bound for college, and Chantal plans to parlay her blog into a big business. This bonding opportunity would be ideal quality time together if the siblings actually got along,...

The global TV drama market is booming with international networks and worldwide Svod platforms moving into original, local scripted production in an unparalleled way. Foreign dramas and comedies are increasingly starting to play in the U.S., on a variety of cable networks and digital platforms, in addition to broadcasters and studios scouring the globe to find the most interesting ideas to translate to North American audiences.
This year’s development season has already seen ABC working up a legal drama with Daniel Dae Kim based on Korean format My Lawyer, Mr Jo., and romantic drama Until The Wedding, based on the eponymous Israeli series, while Fox handed a script commitment to British comedy Sunny D.
The Svod services are also getting involved; Amazon is piloting a Las Vegas-set remake of DJ mockumentary People Just Do Nothing and Apple is finalizing a deal for a Richard Gere-fronted drama based on Israeli drama Nevelot.
