On November 1, 1920 she was seriously injured in a car crash. She was thrown through the windshield, fractured her skull, and broke her jaw. The car she was in was being driven by her then-boyfriend Philip Morgan Plant. Soon after the accident he dumped her for
Constance Bennett. In 1924 she sued him for $500,000 claiming the accident had permanently disfigured her and destroyed her career. Eventually she agreed to settle the suit for $75,000.
