Now that Renfield is available on Blu-ray and DVD, I think a lot of people will be kicking themselves for not sinking their teeth into the horror-comedy on the big screen. The home video release boasts an hour of making-of featurettes and deleted/extended scenes, plus an audio commentary with eight crew members.
The track features producer Samantha Nisenboim, screenwriter Ryan Ridley, makeup effects supervisor Christien Tinsley, visual effects supervisor James E. Price, assistant editor Noah Cody, supervising sound editor/sound designer John Marquis, supervising sound editor Nancy Nugent, and supervising digital colorist David Cole.
Here are eight things I learned from the Renfield commentary…
1. Using footage from the original Dracula was Adam McKay’s idea.
Renfield opens with Nicolas Cage’s Dracula and Nicholas Hoult’s Renfield inserted into footage from Tod Browning’s 1931 classic adaptation of Dracula, a concept that came from McKay after boarding the project.

Universal Pictures has set the streaming premiere date for its Chris McKay-directed horror comedy Renfield, starring Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage, announcing that the film will bow exclusively on Peacock on June 9th.
The film released in theaters on April 14th follows Renfield (Hoult), the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss: Dracula (Cage). For centuries, Renfield has slavishly served Dracula by procuring his master’s prey and doing his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, Renfield is ready to look for a new life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness, if only he can figure out how to end the toxic, co-dependent relationship…
Awkwafina and Shohreh Aghdashloo are among the others starring in the film scripted by Ryan Ridley, from a story by Robert Kirkman — one of a number of projects through which Uni has looked to leverage its movie monster library for a modern audience.

Universal’s Dracula comedy Renfield (read our review Here), starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his titular lackey, was a box office disaster, pulling in just $25 million worldwide… which is a shame, because the movie is a lot of fun. Maybe it will reach more of an audience when it receives a digital, Blu-ray, and DVD release on June 6th – and Universal is doing their best to make sure viewers will check it out, giving it a “Dracula Sucks Edition” release that will be packed with extras!
Based on a treatment written by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, Renfield was directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty). In Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, R.M. Renfield was an inmate at a lunatic asylum who was thought to be suffering from delusions but actually is a servant of Dracula.

Universal’s Dracula comedy Renfield (read our review Here), starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his titular lackey, didn’t light up the box office when it reached theatres last weekend. So far it has only pulled in just over $12 million… and those are the worldwide numbers. So there probably aren’t a whole lot of you who have seen the movie to know that the dance sequence Hoult shared on social media last Friday is a deleted scene… but trust us, the dance sequence isn’t in the movie. Here it is online:

There have been so many variations and film versions of Bram Stoker’s classic Dracula, from 1926’s Nosferatu to Tod Browning’s 1931 Dracula to Francis Coppola’s well-regarded take with Gary Oldman to even comedic satires like Love at First Bite with George Hamilton taking on the role. Now in Universal’s latest effort to rescue its horror classics and make them new again, we have the perfectly cast Nicolas Cage as the Prince of Darkness. Even he has done an offshoot before, in 1988’s Vampire’s Kiss. However this time around the film is not centered on Dracula himself, but rather his beleaguered servant, henchman, whatever you choose to call him, Renfield, and it is another Nicholas, as in Hoult, who has the title role this time in Renfield. Cage’s part, though meaty, is actually supporting as the emphasis turns to the long-suffering assistant who was tasked with bringing...

Universal’s Dracula comedy Renfield, starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his titular lackey, is set to reach theatres next week, on April 14th, and while the primary draw is the chance to see Cage play Dracula, the movie also includes a couple special treats for fans of the horror genre. Among the cast members are Caroline Williams, best known for playing the heroine Stretch in 1986’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, and William Ragsdale, who previously crossed paths with vampires in 1985’s Fright Night and the 1988 sequel Fright Night Part 2. Williams is playing a character named Vanessa, while Ragsdale takes on the role of Older Priest. Social media images of these ’80s horror icons in their Renfield roles can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Nicolas Cage is all bloody fangs and long, dark cape as he plays a rage-filled Count Dracula in the final trailer for Renfield from director Chris McKay.
Universal’s modern-day horror comedy, set nowhere near Castle Dracula in Transylvania, focuses more on Cage in full-on Dracula mode, whereas an earlier trailer emphasized the dynamic between the vampire king and his henchman, the titular Renfield played by Nicholas Hoult.
“You deserve only suffering,” Dracula lashes out at Hoult’s Renfield in the trailer. This is followed by another moment with Cage’s present-day monster character gliding in a red satin smoking jacket, with blood smeared around his mouth.
At another point in the trailer, Renfield and Awkwafina, who plays a traffic cop, set about to take on Dracula in a blood-and-guts confrontation. During a previous Los Angeles Times interview, Cage said his take on Dracula drew from the performances of Bela Lugosi...

Two iconic Nic(h)olases are uniting on screen in less than a month. Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage are starring in “Renfield,” a comedic take on the Dracula mythos, and Universal Pictures has released the final trailer for the upcoming horror comedy.
Set to Radiohead’s early ’90s grunge hit “Creep,” a classic anthem for social rejects, the trailer begins in the time of Bran Stoker’s original “Dracula” novel, recounting Renfield’s (Hoult) first encounter with the devious Count (Cage). It then flash-forwards a hundred years later, with the familiar now the hapless lackey of the vampire, forced to find new humans to feed him and quench his thirst for blood.
But all that changes when Renfield saves a New Orleans bar from a shooting, and meets traffic cop Rebecca, who he quickly falls head-over-heels for. When he confesses his unusual occupation to his new love interest, she...

Nicolas Cage has played a lot of kooky characters in his career thus far, but this April he ticks off another icon to his list: Dracula. The Oscar-winning actor plays the classic vampire in the new action horror-comedy “Renfield,” and the first trailer promises a rollicking good time.
Nicholas Hoult stars as the titular character in this film, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss. Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency.
“The Tomorrow War” and “The Lego Batman Movie” filmmaker Chris McKay directs from a script by Ryan Ridley (“Rick and Morty”), and the cast also includes Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz and Adrian Martinez.

But after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency.
Nicolas Cage, meanwhile, transforms into the famed vampire for comedy “Renfield,” helmed by Chris McKay (“The Lego Batman Movie”) and using a script by “Rick & Morty” scribe Ryan Ridley. “Renfield” is based on an original idea by “The Walking Dead” and “Invincible” creator Robert Kirkman.

Universal has released the first trailer for “Renfield,” a Dracula movie starring Nicolas Cage.
Despite movie (and vampire) fans’ curiosity about Cage’s distinctive spin on the voice and aesthetic of Count Dracula in the upcoming film, the Academy Award-winning actor is not the main character. Instead, the film’s protagonist and namesake is Nicholas Hoult, who plays the Transylvanian count’s right-hand man, Renfield.
Renfield begins as a devoted servant who gradually becomes disillusioned with carrying out Dracula’s malevolent deeds. When a traffic cop played by Awkwafina catches his eye, love fuels Renfield to reevaluate his outlook on life and his willingness to continue helping Dracula.
The cast includes Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Bess Rous and more.
In Stoker’s writings, Renfield was portrayed as a delusional inmate at an insane asylum who eats living creatures because he believes their blood will make him immortal. Stoker ultimately reveals,...

Yesterday, Universal Pictures showed off the title logo for their upcoming Dracula comedy Renfield, starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his titular lackey. Showing that logo video was a strong indication that they would be releasing a trailer soon – and they have indeed released a trailer very soon after that video. The trailer for Renfield is now online, and can be seen in the embed above!
Renfield is set to reach theatres on April 14th.

We’re just three months away from the April 14th theatrical release of Universal’s horror comedy Dracula movie Renfield, which stars Nicholas Hoult as the title character and Nicolas Cage as his bloodsucking boss. The studio hasn’t released a trailer for the film yet, but they just took what would appear to be a positive step toward sending the trailer out into the world: they have unveiled the official logo for Renfield. You can check it out in the Twitter video embed at the bottom of this article.
That logo is probably the title image we’re going to see in the trailer, so the full trailer can’t be far behind.

It’s about time for Universal to start up the marketing machine for their horror comedy Dracula movie Renfield, which stars Nicholas Hoult as the title character and Nicolas Cage as his bloodsucking boss. The movie’s April 14, 2023 theatrical release date is not far away. But while we wait to see a trailer for this movie, there have been some interesting things said about it in interviews… like Cage’s list of things that have inspired his performance. He has said that his Dracula voice is meant to sound like a mixture of a Mid-Atlantic accent with some Sir Christopher Lee and a bit of Anne Bancroft. He has also said that some of his movements as the character were inspired by Sadako from Ringu. And now he has said that he was going for a sort of Andy Warhol pop art Dracula performance.

A few weeks ago, director Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) let the world know that his upcoming Universal Monsters movie Renfield, which stars the legendary Nicolas Cage as horror icon Dracula and is set to reach theatres on April 14, 2023, has “got action, it’s got a lot of heart, it’s not without menace…” And now the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association has added that the film has “bloody violence, some gore, language throughout, and some drug use.” That is why they have given it an R rating.

Nicolas Cage plays Dracula in the upcoming Universal Monsters movie Renfield, which is set to reach theatres on April 14, 2023, and he has said that the voice he used for the character is a mixture of a Mid-Atlantic accent with some Sir Christopher Lee and a bit of Anne Bancroft. The film’s director Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) has reiterated that Anne Bancroft was a source of inspiration in a new interview with Empire magazine (with thanks to Syfy Wire for the transcription). McKay told Empire that he and Cage “talked a lot about silent acting. Things like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, making shapes with his body. You’re gonna see allusions to Nosferatu, all the way to Anne Bancroft in The Graduate.” McKay said that this modern story, which presents Dracula as a “shitty boss” to the titular character, is “far away from what you would typically think...

The legendary Nicolas Cage (check out the trailer for his new movie The Old Way) plays Dracula in the upcoming Universal Monsters movie Renfield, which is set to reach theatres on April 14, 2023 – and his co-star Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) is excited for people to see what Cage has done with the role.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Hoult said, “Yeah, the second Nic Cage experience was incredible. I got to work with him when I was 14. I played his son in a movie called The Weather Man, and I felt so fortunate to be back on set with him because I’m such a fan of his. Nicolas Cage is set to play Dracula in Universal’s “Renfield,” a monster movie centering not on the infamous vampire, but rather his notorious lackey.
The call sheet may be confusing. That’s because Cage is starring alongside another Nic, Nicholas Hoult, who is portraying the unhinged henchman known as Renfield.
An origin story, the upcoming film is expected to take place in the present day. It’s not clear how much it will stick to the source material, Bram Stoker’s 1897 horror novel “Dracula.” In the literary thriller, R.M. Renfield was an inmate at a lunatic asylum. He was thought to be suffering from delusions that compelled him to eat live creatures in the hopes of obtaining immortality, until it’s later revealed that he’s under the influence of one Count Dracula.

Amazon has released the first official trailer for sci-fi blockbuster “The Tomorrow War,” debuting on July 2 and starring Chris Pratt as Dan Forester, a high school teacher (and military vet) who is recruited by a group of time travelers to fight a war 30 years in the future.
“I was trying to save my daughter,” a war-hardened Pratt says in the trailer. “If I’ve gotta save the world to save her, then I’m gonna do it.”
In the movie, an alien species threatens life on Earth, and the only hope for survival is for soldiers and civilians from the present to travel to the year 2051 and help save the planet. Dan teams up with his estranged father, played by J.K. Simmons, and a brilliant scientist, portrayed by Yvonne Strahovski, to rewrite the fate of mankind.
In the trailer, soldiers from the future interrupt a televised soccer match to recruit present-day fighters.

Chris McKay, director of the upcoming “The Tomorrow War,” is in talks to direct and produce Universal Pictures’ “Renfield,” a monster movie centered around Dracula’s sidekick and based on an original story outline from Robert Kirkman.
Ryan Ridley wrote the script. Plot details are being kept deep inside Dracula’s crypt.
The film will be produced by Skybound Entertainment’s film team, including Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst. McKay’s producing partner Samantha Nisenboim will be joining the project as executive producer.
Universal remains committed to creating compelling, filmmaker-driven projects based on characters from the studio’s vast monsters legacy. Instead of prescribing a mandated updating of these monster stories and making them all part of a larger scheme, the studio loosened these restrictions and open-sourced to filmmakers who were inspired to create their own unique stories; similar to what was done with the “Invisible Man...
