Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s long-running manga series One Piece launched last week and seems to have been a big success. Fans are eager for more, and producers told Variety that scripts for One Piece season 2 are already complete.
“We’ve got scripts ready,” said Marty Adelstein, CEO of Tomorrow Studios, which produces the series. Production on One Piece season 2 obviously can’t get underway until the SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved, but once they’re able to start, Tomorrow Studios president Beck Clements said the new season could debut as early as next year. “Realistically, hopefully, a year away, if we move very quickly, and that is a possibility,” Clements said. “Somewhere between a year and 18 months, we could be ready for air.“

As a school of adaptation, the live-action take on anime and manga is only slightly less cursed than the live-action series or film based on a video game. Yet remarkably, 2023 is set to be a banner year for both. In January, HBO premiered “The Last of Us,” the hit drama that takes the same somber, character-driven approach to a zombie apocalypse as the 2013 game. With rave reviews, major ratings and a raft of Emmy nominations, “The Last of Us” successfully bucked a multi-decade trend. A few months later, “The Super Mario Bros.” movie would repeat the feat at the box office, if not quite with critics.
Netflix may have eyed this trend with some interest as the global streaming service has prepared the launch of “One Piece,” a series adapted from the long-running manga written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. Similar undertakings have a checkered history, a fact Netflix itself...

Netflix's "One Piece" series officially hits the streamer on Aug. 31. On Jan. 30, Netflix shared the first look at the live-action series (which is based on the beloved manga by Eiichiro Oda) in the form of a poster, where we see Iñaki Godoy as the series's main character, Monkey D. Luffy, from behind, wearing his iconic straw hat.
The "One Piece" manga series began publishing way back in 1997. In it, Oda tells the story of Luffy, a pirate who can gain magical abilities by eating a special type of fruit. He's determined to get the titular One Piece, which makes the bearer the king of all pirates. He and his Straw Hat Pirates - which include the sword fighter Roronoa Zoro, the sometimes cowardly Usopp, and the prince Sanji - face down all sorts of enemies on their quest. Ahead of its debut on Thursday, Netflix has released the final trailer for “One Piece” as well as several new photos from the upcoming series.
Whereas the first trailer for the series served as more of an introduction to Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and his quest to be King of the Pirates, this final trailer highlights more of the action in the series.
The clip jumps between battle after battle that will appear in the series, each one wilder than the last. There are flinging cannonballs; glimpses of Buggy the Clown (Jeff Ward), a foe who can attack by removing his own body parts; appearances from Arlong (McKinley Belcher III), a fish-man pirate with a saw-like nose; and of course shots of Luffy’s biology-defying and rubbery attacks.
“If the path seems too easy, you’re on the wrong path,” Luffy says in the trailer to his new crew.

Evil Dead Rise (read our review Here) already received its digital release in the US and is available from Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play, and Vudu. You can find it on Amazon at This Link. The physical media release will follow on June 27th – and by the time that date arrives, it will already be available to watch on the Max streaming service. Collider reports that Evil Dead Rise is set to reach Max on June 23rd.
Evil Dead Rise was once intended to go straight to Max, but it scored so well at test screenings that it earned a theatrical release. That release was quite successful, as the film racked up over $100 million at the global box office. A great accomplishment for a movie that cost under $20 million – and this success paves the way for Evil Dead rights holders Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert to move...

The physical media release will follow on June 27th… but it’s getting a bare bones release. Our friends at Bloody Disgusting have found out that the physical media release in the UK is scheduled for July 17th, and when Evil Dead Rise reaches 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD in the UK, the discs are going to feature an audio commentary with writer/director Lee Cronin, plus Cronin’s horror short film Ghost Train!
Note that 4K Uhd discs are region free, so Evil Dead Rise fans who are outside of the UK and have 4K capabilities will be able to import those discs to listen to the audio commentary.
