Sergio Navarretta’s The Cuban is set to be released on VOD on October 6, 2020, following its July 31st virtual cinema release. The film was directed by Sergio Navarretta and stars Academy Award winner Louis Gossett Jr., Academy Award nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo, Ana Golja, Emmy winner Lauren Holly and Giacomo Gianniotti (Grey’s Anatomy). The screenplay was written by Alessandra Piccione, and the film was produced by Piccione and Navarretta of S.N.A.P. Films Inc., alongside Golja and Taras Koltun. The Afro-Cuban score was composed by legendary Grammy-nominated and Juno winning Cuban-Canadian pianist Hilario Duran and produced by Roberto Occhipinti. The sound team was led by Oscar-nominated sound editor Neslon Ferreira (The Shape of Water). The film was shot in Brantford and Paris Ontario Canada, as well as Havana, Cuba. The Cuban is a musical journey of love, friendship, and the power of the imagination. When a naïve pre-med student...

Cuba is a really interesting place. I’ve actually been there, though only for a day, back a few years ago before the U.S. government again made it difficult to travel to the island. I only mention this to bring up the potential inherent in setting a story even partially in that country. The Cuban, opening today, opts to do just such a thing, though is unable to fully build upon the premise and the promise of that element, especially when it goes so far as to actually shoot in Havana (more on that in a bit). Despite a touching turn from Louis Gossett Jr. and some charming emotions, the final product sadly leaves you wanting more. The movie is a drama about an unexpected friendship that develops in a nursing home. When naive pre-med student Mina (Ana Golja) gets her first job, it’s in a nursing home, which...

Music is at the heart of director Sergio Navarretta’s “The Cuban,” set for a limited theatrical release July 31. In the movie, pre-med student Mina, played by Ana Golja (“Degrassi”), is tasked with caring for Luis, portrayed by Louis Gossett Jr., who is struggling with Alzheimer’s and has retreated into himself. As she feeds him, she tells him of her dreams of being a musician and hums tunes from her childhood in Afghanistan. Luis sparks to the songs, and begins to come out of his shell.
Navarretta points to “The Mambo Kings” as an inspiration for his film, saying he was so moved by the music in that 1992 movie, about a pair of brothers who flee Havana for New York in the ’50s, that he wanted to make a picture with music as its focal point. His choice to create that sound was Grammy Award-nominated Cuban jazz artist Hilario Durán.

There are several very mildly cautionary notes sounded in Sergio Navarretta’s “The Cuban,” . There’s the gentle exhortation not to follow someone else’s dream at the expense of your own. There’s a subtle finger-wag at ageism, at the assumption that because someone is elderly or infirm they have nothing left to give the world. And there’s a whole lot about the healing power of music. But the real learning here ought to be that if you cast two such charismatic performers as Louis Gossett Jr. and Shohreh Aghdashloo in your movie, it would be better to clear all the Life Lesson clutter away and just let them get on with it.
Gossett plays Luis Garcia, a heavily medicated Alzheimer’s patient in a care home where he spends most of his time staring into the middle distance in his room — institutionally tidy except for a poster...

"We teach people how to love." Brainstorm Media has released the first official trailer for The Cuban, a heartwarming indie drama from Canadian-Italian filmmaker Sergio Navarretta. This first premiered at the Whistler Film Festival last year, and it also played at the Sonoma Film Festival earlier this year. Ana Golja plays a naïve pre-med student who lands her first job working in a nursing home. An unexpected friendship with Luis, an elderly Cuban musician there, reignites her love of music and changes her life forever. Starring the tremendously wonderful Louis Gossett Jr. (last seen on HBO's "Watchmen") as the Cuban musician Luis. With a cast including Shohreh Aghdashloo, Lauren Holly, Shiva Negar, Jonathan Keltz, and Giacomo Gianniotti. This looks like it's an emotional, energizing film about the amazing power of music. Here's the first official Us trailer (+ poster) for Sergio Navarretta's The Cuban, direct from YouTube: A musical journey of love,...

Travolta plays an isolated obsessive who tracks down his movie hero in this nasty drama, directed by former Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst
This marks yet another rung down on John Travolta’s ladder of career ignominy after his most recent flops, Gotti and Speed Kills. It’s a grotesque drama in which Travolta plays a disturbed fan. It would be risible if it weren’t so offensive, mean-spirited and, frankly, nasty. Sporting a pudding-bowl haircut, too-small bike helmet and deploying an overdone shuffling gait, Travolta stars as Moose, an isolated obsessive living on the fringes of Los Angeles’ celebrity culture. At night, he busks for a living on Hollywood Boulevard – in costume as a British bobby (complete with Dick Van Dyke-style accent). The aim is to get enough scratch to fund his collection of movie memorabilia, a good chunk of which is devoted to his hero, one-time C-list...

Chicago – John Travolta continues to surprise by challenging himself in offbeat roles. His latest is “The Fanatic,” which had its nationwide release on August 30th. To promote the film and greet admirers, Travolta stopped by the Wizard World Comic Con in Chicago, and Joe Arce of HollywoodChicago.com shot an Exclusive Photo.
“The Fanatic” was based on a true story that actually occurred to co-writer/director Fred Durst, the front man for the band Limp Bizkit. The topic is extreme fandom and stalking, and Travolta portrays Moose, an autistic man who worships horror film actor Hunter Dunbar (Devon Sawa). After finding out where his hero lives, Moose begins stalking him relentlessly, escalating into a dangerous situation for Dunbar. Durst based the story on a fan who pursued him during the height of Limp Bizkit’s popularity.

Prominently placed at the start of a very long final credit crawl is what may go down in motion picture history as one of the most misguided displays of somber self-congratulation ever: “John Travolta Is Moose. ‘The Fanatic.’ A Fred Durst Film.” Given that this is a movie that starts with an onscreen-text quote from its own bad dialogue, the clueless hubris is no longer surprising by that point. Still,
For starters, it is the worst Travolta vehicle in some time, and coming just a year after the double whammy of “Gotti” and “Speed Kills,” that is really saying something. It also finds him entering that unfortunate pantheon of presumably well-intentioned performances of differently-abled characters that somehow emerge a compendium of the most cringe-inducing clichés of people with limited faculties.

Write what you know, they say. But because Fred Durst once had a bad experience with a stalker, we now get the rank human patty that is the Limp Bizkit frontman and sometime director’s latest indulgence “The Fanatic,” a celebrity-terrorizing scenario that wants to be “Misery” but only creates misery.
Durst didn’t necessarily embarrass himself 10 years ago when he released his directorial debut, the admirably sensitive college drama “The Education of Charlie Banks”; he didn’t write the film, nor did his effort suggest hidden reserves of cinematic promise. “The Fanatic,” however, which Durst did have a hand in writing, is a brainless, exploitative folly which gives John Travolta free rein to mine the history of cringe-worthy autism portrayals for an offensively garish Frankenstein pantomime of unhinged obsession. It ultimately suggests this side-career of Durst’s should be well and truly snuffed out.

As two former teen idols, both John Travolta and Devon Sawa know a thing or two about obsessive superfans. The two pair up in “The Fanatic,” a dramatic thriller about a middle-aged man whose obsession with a celebrity action star becomes dangerously intense. Travolta recently made waves with an unhinged performance as New York City mobster John Gotti in 2018’s “Gotti,” directed by “Entourage” star Kevin Connolly. Now he’s working with another unexpected director: former Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst.

"I just wanted an autograph!" Quiver Distribution has debuted an official trailer for a stalker thriller titled The Fanatic, the latest film directed by Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst. He's a filmmaker, too! This is the third feature film he has directed, and it's getting a release in select theaters next month. The Fanatic is the movie starring John Travolta as a deranged celebrity fanboy, who just wants an autograph from his favorite movie star. After he finds out where he lives, his actions start to take a dark turn as his obsession grows stronger. And the star finds himself in more danger. Of course he does! I am sure both Travolt and Durst have real stories like this themselves. The cast includes Devon Sawa, Ana Golja, Jacob Grodnik, James Paxton, and Josh Richman. It looks as crazy as it sounds, and might actually be a fun(ny) watch. Here's...

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered.
New on DVD and Blu-ray
"The Martian"
Unfortunately, the poster on this one was misleading -- they never actually let us bring Matt Damon home after seeing the movie. (His wife would probably disapprove.) You can, however, take home Ridley Scott's acclaimed Mars mission movie "The Martian" on DVD and Blu-ray starting January 12. The Blu-ray editions include more than 90 minutes of special features, including five "in-world" pieces, and featurettes from the cast, director, and producers. There's also a gag reel, which should be fun.
"Hotel Transylvania 2"
Drac's Pack is back in the sequel to "Hotel Transylvania," as they put the son of Mavis and Johnny through a "monster-in-training" boot camp to bring out his vampire side. The DVD, out January 12, includes feature commentary with the director and vocal cast,...

We’re just days away from the return of ‘Degrassi,’ and a huge reveal for Zoe!
Degrassi‘s newest mean girl has a deep, dark secret! Zoe Rivas (Ana Golja), who joined the Degrassi kids in Paris during the first half of season 13, becomes a full-time student when the show returns Oct. 3 on Teen Nick — and in this first-look clip, obtained exclusively by HollywoodLife.com, we learn she’s got something to hide.
After an awkward welcome from closeted West Drive fan Principal Simpson (Stefan Brogren), Zoe complains about having to enroll at the “steaming hell hole,” formerly known as the Degrassi Community School.
“You’re 15; if you’re not working, you have to be in school,” her mom tells her.
“What if everyone finds out why I got kicked off the show?” asks a concerned Zoe.
Dun, dun, dun!

Sacrebleu! It looks like Maya is already making a new enemy before her big summer trip to Paris. Watch!
First impressions are everything on Degrassi. One bad exchange can lead to a life-long — or, at the very least, a season-long — feud between characters; and based on this clip from the show’s July 11 season premiere, obtained exclusively by HollywoodLife.com, a new feud is definitely on the horizon.
It all begins when new-girl Zoë Rivas (Ana Golja), who also happens to star on West Drive, waltzes onto the scene with a sassy “Bonjour, bitches.” You know things can only go south from there. (Side note: Does anyone else think Zoë looks like a mini Nina Dobrev?)
Zoë immediately clicks with Tristan (Lyle Lettau) — he bugs out when she tells him the entire cast watches his West Drive Experience vlog — but Maya (Olivia Scriven)? Not so much.
“I guess you can come too,...
