*here be spoilers. Director/writer: Pål Sletaune. Cast: Noomi Rapace, Kristoffer Joner, Vetle Qvenild Werring, and Stig R. Amdam. The Monitor is a Norwegian film that released in the United States July 25th on DVD. In the United Kingdom, this film is called the gentler Babycall. The film itself is a strange tale of a woman recovering from family tragedy. This sums up the central plot. However, there is a strong sub-plot that acts much like a ghost story. Both tales come together through themes of abuse with the film's ending adding some initial confusion. The story centrally follows Noomi Rapace (Prometheus) as Anna. On the surface, she appears as a single mom protecting her son from an abusive father. She uses a baby monitor to eavesdrop on him. There is something more here, though. Without giving too much away, Anna is suffering from loneliness and something else. She reaches...

Anna (Noomi Rapace) and her son Anders (Vetle Qvenild Werring) are on the lamb from Anna’s abusive and meddlesome husband. Following a sketchy and clearly horrifying attack, both Anna and Anders are relocated to a remote housing estate in Norway. Clearly affected by what has happened, Anna struggles to adjust, and is encouraged to integrate herself and her son into a normal life by child services. Anna soon finds solace in the use of a baby monitor – facilitating a distance between mother and son during bedtime hours. However, this newfound comfort is short lived, as Anna finds that the baby monitor is picking up more than just the sounds of her son sleeping – someone or something is crying for help.

As most cinema-goers become mesmerised by Rooney Mara's performance as Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's remake of 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' lest we forget that is was in fact Noomi Rapace who also excelled in the same role in Niels Arden Oplev's Swedish original that first caught our eye. But today's snippet is focusing on Rapace's new Norwegian horror thriller 'Babycall'. The movie opened in its native Norway last October and is now set to arrive in UK theatres next month. 'Babycall' was written and directed by Pal Sletaune ('Next Door' Aka 'Naboer') and co-stars Kristoffer Joner and Vetle Qvenild Werring ('Cold Prey 2' Aka 'Fritt vilt II'). Rapace will be seen later this year in Ridley Scott's new sci-fi epic 'Prometheus'.
