Are you ready for Breaking Mennonite?
Based on actual events, the new scripted Wgn America series Pure, debuting Wednesday night, tells the story of a Mennonite pastor who gets sucked into the drug-smuggling activities of a small group of Mennonites, seeking to protect his family and his community.
Wgn is airing the first season of Pure, which was broadcast on CBC in Canada, then on Hulu in the U.S. Wgn and Canada's SuperChannel joined to produce a second season, which Wgn will air sometime later this year.
At the heart of Pure is recently chosen pastor Noah Funk, loving husband to Anna and father to two teenagers. With the aid of a local policeman, he hopes to rid his community of the scourge of drugs and a small but deadly Mennonite mob's tie to Mexican drug cartels.
Playing Noah is Canadian actor Ryan Robbins. Ryan is a familiar face on U.

The use of The Clash’s 1982 hit single, “Should I Stay or Should I Go,” in “Stranger Things” is a great example of why there’s a new Emmy category this season honoring the creativity of the music supervisor. The Duffer Brothers inserted the song into their ’80s sci-fi script to emotionally connect the Indiana family that’s separated by the Upside Down dimension. However, if Emmy-nominated music supervisor Nora Felder hadn’t convinced The Clash of its importance, the Duffers would’ve had to find a replacement.
Fortunately, the “Stranger Things” showrunners (Matt and Ross Duffer) were never aware there was even a problem obtaining the licensing rights. “It was my job to protect them,” said Felder Thursday night during a Q&A panel discussion. “They were worried about trivializing the song and needed to see how it was going to be used in scenes, and for the first...

The new Music Supervisor category this Emmy season finally honors the supervisor’s creative contribution to narrative storytelling and music aesthetic: Licensing songs that are appropriately iconic and emotionally resonant, while touting some of the hottest new talent.
Here are the nominees: Thomas Golubic (“Better Call Saul” — “Sunk Costs”), Susan Jacobs (“Big Little Lies” — “You Get What You Need”), Manish Raval, Jonathan Leahy, Tom Wolfe (“Girls”— “Goodbye Tour”), Zach Cowie, Kerri Drootin (“Master of None” — “Amarsi Un Po”), and Nora Felder (“Stranger Things” — “Chapter Two: The Weirdo on Maple Street”).
The results included three female supervisors (Jacobs, Drootin, and Felder) and demonstrated the brand power of HBO (“Big Little Lies,” “Girls”) and Netflix (“Master of None,” “Stranger Things”). But in the end, it came down to a battle of dueling playlists.

One of the most consistently-praised elements of Netflix's breakaway hit Stranger Things is the series' use of music, from Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein's pulsing, synth-driven theme song to the period-specific pop tunes that dominate the soundtrack. Except...are said tunes actually period-specific? No, as it turns out! After a very serious, in-depth investigation on Google, I discovered that a number of the tracks featured in the series are in fact anachronistic -- i.e. released after 1983, the year in which Stranger Things is set. This is shocking, I know, but we all have to accept it. Breathe and remain calm as you browse the full list of non-period-accurate songs from the series below. Note: For added context, each entry is additionally marked "diegetic" (music that exists within the narrative realm of the show, i.e. that can be heard by the characters) or "non-diegetic" (music that exists outside...

[Editor’s Note: Our own Scott Drebit hosted panels last weekend at the sixth annual Calgary Horror Con. At the three-day event, Scott caught up with Ari Lehman, the first actor to ever play Jason Voorhees, to discuss his years in the ’80s New York City music scene, performing onstage in Africa, and singing and playing the keytar in his punk rock/heavy metal band First Jason.]
Congratulations on melting everyone’s faces off Friday night with your solo performance as First Jason.
Ari Lehman: Thank you! That’s why we’re there, to melt faces, to melt brains. That’s kind of you to say. I love playing First Jason’s songs on the electric keytar; it has a certain kind of sound, it’s very loud. But usually I have the emotional and musical support of my bandmates; my drummer, whose name ironically is Bass Amp, and our guitarist, Eddie Machete—they give me so much support, and it just makes me feel great having them there. So I felt that it came off well; but it was an adjustment. The audience was so receptive and it was a great experience for me, too, playing that way.
I was there with my niece, and I knew of the band, but I assumed it was just you.

Music festivals have never appealed to me. Especially the ones that involve camping in the dead of summer. The bands that are booked for festivals either don’t register or elicit a chuckle. Being around hundreds to thousands of people for that long sounds like one of the ten Chambers of Hell not mentioned in Big Trouble in Little China. Not to mention chronic swamp ass for days.
