What would the end of the world actually look like? This question has weighed on Dr. Amy Mainzer for more than two years now, ever since she was first approached by writer and director Adam McKay to act as science consultant on his new film, .
The dark comedy stars Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio as two scientists who discover a comet on a collision-course with Earth, kickstarting a countdown to the apocalypse. Seems like something we should all take seriously, no? But as astronomy Ph.D. candidate Kate Dibiasky (Lawrence) and her advisor Dr. Randall Mindy (DiCaprio) soon find out, reconciling facts with public perception in a culture wracked with divisions isn’t quite as simple as looking up toward the sky.

"There's a certain point where he realizes, wait a minute... something's not right..." Netflix has debuted a fun featurette for Adam McKay's sci-fi satire Don't Look Up, which is now streaming on Netflix to watch. The featurette centers around an astronomer named Amy Mainzer, who's a Professor of Planetary Science, who was the primary science advisor on the movie. She discusses a few scenes as well as the general concept behind the plot - a comet is discovered by astronomers, and it's going to hit Earth. So they then try to inform the public, and the government, that this is definitely going to happen. But no one seems to care. I'm not the biggest fan of the movie, but as a concept, it's frighteningly authentic with our inability to accept the truth of what's coming with climate change. The cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, with Jonah Hill,...

This article contains Don’t Look Up spoilers.
In Don’t Look Up, the frequently searing new satire from filmmaker Adam McKay, astronomers Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) discover that a previously undetected comet is headed straight for Earth, with six months to go before the object slams into the planet in what will be an extinction level event.
As time runs out, the scientists plead their case to the ignorant, self-obsessed President Janie Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her vile son/chief of staff, Jason (Jonah Hill), who dismiss them. It’s only when Orlean gets caught up in a sex scandal that she brings the comet to national attention as a diversion and plans–some good, some nefarious–are finally set in motion to stop the comet from wiping out humanity.
Reactions to Don’t Look Up so far are mixed, with some critics finding it heavy-handed...

We're a long way from 1998, folks. Once upon a time, "Armageddon" represented the nadir of scientific collaboration in space-set movies when director Michael Bay told Ben Affleck to "Shut the f*** up" after questioning the premise of training oil drillers to become astronauts and blow up an incoming asteroid ... instead of simply training astronauts how to drill a hole on an asteroid. Not that scientific accuracy is the end-all, be-all when it comes to entertainment, of course, but we have since received much more worthwhile efforts in the form of Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" and its...

Leonardo DiCaprio, a prominent environmental activist outside of his acting career, said writer-director Adam McKay’s newest film “Don’t Look Up” cracks the code on climate change.
“We’d all been wanting to get the message out there about the climate crisis, and Adam really cracked the code with creating this narrative,” DiCaprio told reporters on Sunday night at the Netflix film’s premiere at The Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York.
DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence star as two low-level astronomers who discover a planet-killing comet that’s hurtling toward Earth. To their dismay, they are obliged to warn mankind about the imminent catastrophe — similar to scientists today currently warning the world about climate change.
“It’s really hard to reinvent the wheel as far as articulating the science of climate crisis, but what he did here was create a sense of urgency,” DiCaprio said. “We all wanted to...

Don’T Look Up tells the story of two low-level astronomers, who must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet earth. In select theaters December 10, on Netflix December 24, watch the brand-new trailer starring
Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), an astronomy grad student, and her professor Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) make an astounding discovery of a comet orbiting within the solar system. The problem — it’s on a direct collision course with Earth. The other problem? No one really seems to care. Turns out warning mankind about a planet-killer the size of Mount Everest is an inconvenient fact to navigate. With the help of Dr. Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan), Kate and Randall embark on a media tour that takes them from the office of an indifferent President Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her sycophantic son and Chief of Staff, Jason (Jonah Hill), to...

It may be a lot of notice, but PBS Kids has announced a new show, Ready Jet Go!, that will be coming out Winter 2016, and this one looks very cool.
Not only am I a big fan of anything that’s pretty serious about delivering on an educational component, but this one focuses on astronomy, technology, scientific exploration, innovation and invention. That sounds pretty awesome.
There’s obviously very little information, but there is some, and I only wish it were going to be around sooner, because I’d love a show to share with my kids right now that had elements of astronomy, invention, and all the rest.
Keep your eyes out for more on this one.
