The Mountain Goats have shared “Fresh Tattoo,” the latest single from Jenny from Thebes, their sequel album to 2002’s All Hail West Texas. Plus, they’ve announced new stretch of US tour dates for Winter 2023 (get tickets here).
“Fresh Tattoo” assembles an impressive group of collaborators including Bully’s Alicia Bognanno, horn players Matt Douglas and Evan Ringel, and singer-songwriter Matt Nathanson, whom frontman John Darnielle credited in a statement with helping the band get their start after hosting an open mic night in the ’90s.
“Listening to Matt put down the harmonies on [“Fresh Tattoo”] in Tulsa earlier this year was one of the best moments I’ve ever had in my musical life,” he shared. “It meant so much to make something new with him, I wouldn’t even be here without him. I’m very happy to share it with the world today.”

The Mountain Goats have announced their new album, Jenny from Thebes. Billed as the sequel to 2002’s All Hail West Texas, it’s out on October 27th via Merge Records and includes the lead single, “Clean Slate.” Stream the track below.
According to a press release, Jenny from Thebes is “a story about the individual and society, about safety and shelter and those who choose to provide care when nobody else will.” Of course, that individual is Jenny, who longtime Mountain Goats fans will recognize from the All Hail West Texas cut bearing her name as well as “Straight Six” from Jam Eater Blues and “Night Light,” a track that appears on side two of Transcendental Youth.
Produced by Grammy-winner Trina Shoemaker, the 12-track project features contributions from Bully’s Alicia Bognanno (guitar) and Matt Douglas (horn and string arrangements). Kathy Valentine of The Go-Go’s and Matt Nathanson also provide backing vocals.

The latest release from rising songwriter Bailey Bryan, a new ballad from Toby Keith and the current Number One country song in the U.S. make up this week’s list of must-hear country and Americana tracks.
Dead Lee, “Are We Free”
The Portland-based pairing of singer-songwriter Kara Harris and Blitzen Trapper’s Brian Koch, Dead Lee buries the wreckage of a shipwrecked romance in the new video for “Are We Free.” The folksong itself carries a similar message, framing two lovers’ painful breakup against a backdrop of guitar tremolo and vocal harmonies.

On September 14th, indie country-rock outfit Blitzen Trapper will release a 10th-anniversary expanded version of their breakout album Furr, which was ranked Number 13 on Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Albums of 2008. Today the Portland, Oregon-based band unveiled “Booksmart Baby,” one of 12 tracks added to the original album’s 13 to round out the upcoming double LP Furr: Deluxe Edition.
Different from the hazy, psychedelic Americana of Furr’s best-known songs like “Black River Killer” and the title track, “Booksmart Baby” is a mellow, finger-picked folk tune that runs for just under two minutes.

A review of tonight's "Fargo" coming up just as soon as I tell you to kiss my grits... "This kind of thing didn't work in Westerns, and it's not gonna work tonight." -Lou Howard Hawks' 1959 Western "Rio Bravo" didn't invent the idea of lawmen protecting a jail from outlaws looking to free one of their own. (After all, that trope's just a subset of the fort under siege premise that fueled so many Westerns.) But the movie was so entertaining(*) and so successful that Hawks and star John Wayne remade it twice more (as "El Dorado" and "Rio Lobo"), and it's served as inspiration to various unofficial remakes over the years, whether "Assault on Precinct 13," a recent episode of "Banshee," and tonight's crackling installment of "Fargo." (*) Even the musical interlude, designed to take advantage of the primary talents of Wayne's co-stars Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson, is fun.

Austin, Texas -- Stars of all stripes and celebrity hit town to close out South By Southwest, but it was a marching band that stole the show Saturday.
Members of the Austin High band watched their star turn in the premiere of filmmaker Emmett Malloy's "Big Easy Express," then joined documentary subjects Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeroes and Old Crow Medicine Show in an outdoor concert at the University of Texas as the music conference fell into an exhausted heap on its final night.
Across town, Timbaland held a listening party at Perez Hilton's annual to-do. Norah Jones played her new album for an appreciative group of fans. Matthew McConaughey joined The Cult during a free concert. Punk rock icon Bob Mould played "Copper Blue" in its entirety, bringing out the graybeards. Blitzen Trapper's "Taking It Easy Too Long," off their sixth studio album, provides nectar for the youthful. But youth is not necessarily transposable for young, as the Portland, Ore. natives continues to remain authentic to their roots even after a decade of brewing music. Their consistent Americana sound crafted over their past five albums has not been abandoned and with good reason--it is their sound, their honey, their identifier.

After throwing together indie-rock melodies, unhinged country jams, and folky barn-stompers on 2007’s breakout, Wild Mountain Nation, Blitzen Trapper spent its next two records sharpening its focus. Furr jettisoned pop songs for a bipolar collection of boogie power-rock and Americana-inspired ballads, while Destroyer Of The Void scaled back the rough guitarwork for proggy, mellow anthems of the western wilderness. For American Goldwing, Blitzen Trapper revisits the other half of Furr, delivering a masterful homage to Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Band, and other pillars of ’70s Southern rock. It’s straightforward, no-frills nostalgia, but American Goldwing nonetheless shows the band’s ...

Sometimes I feel like a descriptor as worn as “Bob Dylan-like” can get sapped of its prodigious qualities and left sounding almost like an insult. Blitzen Trapper’s Eric Earley has been nursing that tag for the better part of a decade now, and for fairly obvious reasons: his foggy croak, reclusive interviews, and winding, sometimes diverging sense of storytelling have put him in close company with Mr. Zimmerman—but in the best ways possible. Earley earns that status not out of reductive colloquialism, but out of comparable levels of talent....

Rainn Wilson is a really big fan of indie-rockers Blitzen Trapper. In fact, his fandom is so obsessive that it's led to murderous impulses that would even frighten Dwight Schrute. That's if you believe the contents of this new, oddball short film anyway. In The Blitzen Trapper Massacre, Wilson does his best to join the group of folksy, Pacific Northwesterners, but upon facing rejection, he's compelled to commit a few heinous acts of violence. Now that you mention it, he certainly has the facial hair of a mad man. The clip culminates in Wilson performing a bloody version of the band's song "Furr." It's all a little strange and a lot of awesome. In other Blitzen Trapper news, the band is releasing a new, limited edition seven-inch single on Record Store Day, April 16th. Long gone is the Blitzen Trapper of 2007’s Wild Mountain Nation, an album on which too many ideas vied for too little space, and bratty Beck-isms and Sparklehorse synths jostled against delectable hooks that crunched like rock candy. Destroyer Of The Void finds the band further refining the indie Americana and ’70s classic rock of 2008’s Furr, sanding down that album’s pointier edges and using pristine vocal harmonies as cotton batting between proggy flourishes and bits of Queen bombast. The results are by turns soporific and sublime; the one-two punch of the title track and “Laughing Lover ...
