After a horrific car accident, Anna (Ricci) wakes up to find the local funeral director Eliot Deacon (Neeson) preparing her body for burial. Confused, terrified and still feeling very much alive, Anna doesn’t believe she’s dead, despite Deacon’s reassurances that she is merely in transition to the afterlife. Does Deacon really have the ability to communicate with the dead and the only one who can help her? Trapped inside the funeral parlour, Anna is forced to face her deepest fears and accept her death. But Anna’s boyfriend Paul (Long) still can’t shake the nagging suspicion that Deacon isn’t what he appears to be. As Anna’s funeral nears, Paul gets closer to unlocking the disturbing truth. Chicago – Loyal readers will know that I am often forgiving of bad horror films merely due to my love for the genre but there’s nothing that can save “After.Life” from the company of the worst movies of 2010. The copious nudity from Christina Ricci and the admittedly interesting premise may draw those who haven’t seen it to this monumentally stupid film but prepare to lose a few brain cells in the process.
DVD Rating: 1.0/5.0
A common criticism of horror films is that too many writers have been inspired by great anthology shows like “The Twilight Zone” or “The Outer Limits” and they fail to realize that while their idea may be interesting enough to have made a great half-hour episode of television, it falls apart when stretched to the running time of a feature film. If you’re ever trying to make this point in the future, “After.Life” would...

Chicago – “After.Life” is one of the first truly awful films of 2010. Its aggressive solemnity combined with its head-slapping silliness will cause most viewers to simply laugh it off the screen. There’s at least two possible ways to interpret its murky story, and they’re both ludicrous. The only mystery guaranteed to linger in moviegoers’ minds is the inexplicable motivation of Christina Ricci and Liam Neeson to take part in this direct-to-video dreck.
First-time feature director Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo tries far too hard to get a reaction out of her audience. There are countless instances where loud clangs are heard on the soundtrack, followed by characters asking Ricci (and presumably the viewer), “Are you scared?” Frankly, there were more scares in “Casper.” The filmmakers spend so much time making noise that they forget to build suspense. Paul Haslinger’s irritating score has perhaps the greatest overuse of suspended cymbal rolls in film history,...

What happens after you die? Or, more specifically, what happens during that weird, in-between time when you’re dead, but not yet put safely into the ground or spread on the wind or kept on someone’s mantle? Oh, you haven’t wondered about that, have you? Luckily, Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo has.

It’s a very rare occurrence that this writer has the opportunity to speak with female directors in the horror genre, which is why I was very happy to interview Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo about her upcoming supernatural thriller After.Life, which hits theaters in limited release this Friday courtesy of Anchor Bay.
Wojtowicz-Vosloo’s own personal journey to get After.Life made is compelling enough to be its very own movie. The young director came to the United States from Warsaw to study film at Nyu, and during her freshman year at the University she made her presence as an up-and-coming storyteller felt immediately. Pate, a short film she did for Nyu, was selected to debut during the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. Wojtowicz-Vosloo spoke about how Pate’s involvement in the prestigious festival changed her life forever.
“Usually at Sundance the short films get overlooked,” said Wojtowicz-Vosloo. “That’s why it was so surprising...

Do the dead live, or are the living dead? What does it mean to be dead anyway? Great questions, but I’m not sure if Agnieszka Wojtowicz really manages to answer them. After.life is her first feature, a psychological thriller, and despite some top notch talent in the persons of Liam Neeson, Christina Ricci and Justin Long, the film never lives up to potential. Liam Neeson’s performance as scary funeral-director-guy is the saving grace...
