Bill O’Reilly‘s “Killing Reagan” co-author Martin Dugard fired back at Washington Post columnist Erik Wemple on Sunday, questioning the motive of the “Reagan apologists” at the paper after Wemple published a story calling the book “historical fraud.” Wemple suggested that a sequence in the book has “factual problems” and even dug up video to prove his point, but Dugard disagrees. The “Killing Reagan” co-author questioned Wemple’s motive, pointing to Washington Post publisher Frederick Ryan, a former Reagan White House staffer who has written numerous books on the president. “Thus, Mr. Ryan’s motivations and Mr. Wemple’s...

Based on Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard’s bestseller about John Hinckley Jr.’s attempt on Ronald Reagan’s life in 1981, Killing Reagan has a fine First Couple.
Tim Matheson captures the essence of the Reagan persona — a born performer whose public and private selves were so in sync, perhaps even happily, that they became indistinguishable.
After making an important decision, the President pops candy into his mouth and smiles with satisfaction. This, one imagines, is a man whose every gesture is a recapitulation of some moment he once played on camera or witnessed in an old movie. Somehow this endless,...

[Read my more exhaustive "Killing Jesus" set report here.] Ouarzazate, Morocco. It's late October in central Morocco and Haaz Sleiman is worried about crucifixion. Because context is important, it should be noted that Sleiman is sitting in a tent on the set of National Geographic's "Killing Jesus" and he's playing Jesus. We're deep into production on the adaptation of Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard book, but director Christopher Menaul has saved perhaps the hardest scene for late in the shoot. "It's a messed up way to die," Sleiman reflects. "It's probably the most gruesome awful way to die and comparing to any other kind of torture it's like the ultimate because it's also humiliating. They have you walking naked and dragging the beam. I mean the thought of me as Haaz walking with a beam naked, nothing... It would mortified me. I mean I would be terrified. So imagine someone actually really had to go through that.

Haaz Sleiman relaxes in the simple cafe of a 400-year-old casbah in tiny Tamnougalt, Morocco. Grime-streaked and dressed in a simple cloth robe, the actor is nearly beatific, having just wrapped a pivotal scene in Killing Jesus, National Geographic Channel’s latest and most ambitious epic culled from the popular book series by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard. Sleiman introduces himself, then smiles and gestures at the Atlas Mountains visible through an ornately grated window and says, “Every day I am grateful, because it is overwhelmingly beautiful being here. Morocco is such a beautiful country; it feels like you are on a movie set just looking at the … Continue reading →

Ouarzazate, Morocco. Officially, the Moroccan city of Ouarzazate is nicknamed "The door of the desert," resting south of the High Atlas Mountains and on the edge of the Draa Valley. Thanks to the presence of Atlas Studios, though, Ouarzazate is perhaps more appropriately known as The Hollywood of Central Morocco, or perhaps even The Hollywood of Morocco. Ouarzazate has a population of just over 50,000, but in late October of 2014, that population includes a disproportionate number of Jesuses, Judases and an absurd number of Marys, both Jesus' mom and of the Magdalene variety. It's late October of 2014 and Ouarzazate is the beating heart of TV's Biblical world. "It's a very holy town right now," laughs Haaz Sleiman, one of the Ouarzazate Jesi -- Yes, that should be the name of a fantasy baseball team -- specifically playing the title role in National Geographic's "Killing Jesus," the project that has brought me to this region.

Ouarzazate, Morocco. When the story of Jesus is told, the name of "Herod the Great" is rarely accompanied by applause. That is not the case on the central Moroccan set of National Geographic's "Killing Jesus" in late October 2014. We're off to the side of a towering, multi-tiered set standing in for The Temple in Jerusalem, bearing witness to endless repetitions of a shot featuring Herod and an assortment of priests ascending the steps. Kelsey Grammer has been off to the side of video village watching as robed stand-ins went up and down the steps making sure the light was right, serving as a cheerleader to get the shot and move on. Grammer's motivation becomes clear an hour later when the shot is finally locked and a bellowing voice declares, "That's a wrap for Kelsey Grammer." For one brief moment, Herod is beloved by all and takes in the adulation from the cast and crew.

The National Geographic Channel is switching its attentions from the assassinations of presidents, to the assassination of religious figures – with a four hour mini-series adaptation of the 2013 book Killing Jesus, by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard. As the follow-up to the successful TV versions of their earlier books, Killing Lincoln and Killing Kennedy, the project will be written and executive produced by Walon Green (Law & Order: Criminal Intent), with Christopher Menaul (Summer In February) in the director’s chair.
This re-telling of the life and death of Jesus is set against the backdrop of intense conflict within the Roman Empire, and will now star multiple Emmy award-winner Kelsey Grammer (The Expendables 3) as King Herod – “the unrelenting and ambitious Roman King of Judea, who attempted to kill Jesus at his birth.” Stephen Moyer (True Blood) will feature as Pontius Pilate – the fifth prefect of Judaea, and the man who ordered the crucifixion of Jesus.

Scott Free and Bill O’Reilly‘s Killing movies are becoming a formidable franchise for National Geographic Channel. Last night, the second installment in the series, Killing Kennedy, pulled 3.354 million viewers and 1.1 rating in adults 25-54. Killing Kennedy edged the first movie, Killing Lincoln (3.351 million), in total viewers to record Ngc’s largest audience in history and tied Killing Lincoln‘s 1.1 25-45 rating, also an all-time record for the channel. In households, Killing Kennedy posted a 2.8 rating, second highest ever behind the documentary Inside 9/11. Additionally, Ngc says that #killingkennedy was the No. 1 trending topic in the U.S. during the telecast, with the network’s website experiencing record traffic. “Killing Kennedy demonstrated once again that our constant efforts to expand the type of programming National Geographic Channel presents is paying off,” said Ngc President Howard Owens. Killing Kennedy stars Rob Lowe (President Kennedy), Will Rothhaar (Lee Harvey Oswald), with Michelle Trachtenberg...

In the lead-up to the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on Nov. 22, TV programming is going to be flooded with specials, movies and retrospectives on JFK's death. "Killing Kennedy," perhaps the highest-profile of the bunch, came to kick things off on Sunday (Nov. 10).
In the Nat Geo film, based on Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard's best-selling book, Rob Lowe stars as Kennedy, alongside Ginnifer Goodwin as Jacqueline Kennedy. Following Kennedy's final three years, things kick off in 1960, tracking the parallel stories of the ill-fated president and Lee Harvey Oswald (Will Rothhaar). While JFK faces the the threat of Communism in Cuba, Oswald's in Russia, renouncing his American citizenship and meeting his wife, Marina (Michelle Trachtenberg). Eventually, their paths cross in a most horrific way, with the movie eschewing the multiple killers conspiracy that's commonly considered, instead presenting the assassination in the most traditional sense.

On Nov. 22, America and the world mark the 50th anniversary of one of the most momentous events of the 20th century, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
As it did last year with "Killing Lincoln," National Geographic Channel has turned to another best-seller by Fox News' Bill O'Reilly and historian Martin Dugard to dramatize the occasion.
Premiering Sunday, Nov. 10, the docudrama version of "Killing Kennedy" follows the twin trajectories of JFK and Lee Harvey Oswald until they meet on that fateful day in Dallas' Dealey Plaza.
Directed by Nelson McCormick from a script by Kelly Masterson, "Killing Kennedy" stars Rob Lowe as JFK, Ginnifer Goodwin as first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, Will Rothhaar as Lee Harvey Oswald, Michelle Trachtenberg as Marina Oswald, Jack Noseworthy as Bobby Kennedy, Casey Siemaszko as Jack Ruby, Francis Guinan as Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Flood as Kennedy insider Kenneth O'Donnell.

Many actors dream of playing a super hero or a knight in shining armor, but for Will Rothhaar, playing Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald was right up his alley. "Oswald has always been vilified in a huge way but no one has gone in to intimate moments in his life. I was definitely eager to get in to it," Rothaar tells People of being cast as JFK's killer in the new National Geographic Channel movie Killing Kennedy. "It was fascinating to dig deep and find out things about him that I didn't know." In preparation for the film, which follows...

It could be argued, and argued well, that we don't need another movie about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Of course, Hollywood has decided otherwise, so there. In time for the fiftieth anniversary of this dark day in history, we're awash in new documentaries, specials, and fictionalized accounts. "Killing Kennedy" (premieres Sun. Nov. 8 at 8:00 p.m. on Nat Geo) is adapted from the successful book by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard, so it was likely unavoidable that we'd get this admirably concise movie. Rob Lowe steps into the role of Kennedy, and it's a thankless task. Kennedy is...

Half a century after the slaying of President John F. Kennedy, it's still hard to believe that the era of Camelot was brought down by one lone nut. But you'll find no conspiracy theories — not even a hint — in the ambitious National Geographic Channel film Killing Kennedy. Based on the best-selling book by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard, it lays blame for the assassination of JFK (played by Rob Lowe) squarely on...

Last evening I attended a rather remarkable event: the world premiere screening of the new highly-touted National Geographic Channel TV movie Killing Kennedy. (The program will be telecast on November 10.) What made the evening remarkable was the fact that, instead of premiering the film in a New York or L.A. prestigious venue, National Geographic in association with Cablevision, chose Greenbriar, a senior citizens community in the central New Jersey town of Marlboro. It seems the channel is taking a populist approach to publicizing their most prestigious productions and it was decided to premiere the Kennedy film before an audience of people who were alive during the events recounted on screen. Several politicos were on hand (there is an election in New Jersey next week, after all) including Jonathan Hornki, the mayor of Marlboro -who used some clout to get the event held at Greenbriar- and state...

Rob Lowe took a thoughtful approach to playing one of our nation's most beloved public figures, John F. Kennedy.
"I think for known figures, the key is inhabitation, not imitation," Lowe says of his transformation into the 35th President for National Geographic Channel's Killing Kennedy, based on Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard's book.
It airs Nov. 10 – 12 days before the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination.
Lowe had studied the Kennedys for some time, well before he was asked to play the role.

We knew that Rob Lowe and Ginnifer Goodwin looked the part of John and Jacqueline Kennedy in the National Geographic Channel's movie "Killing Kennedy." Now you can see them in action -- a little bit, anyway.
A trailer for the movie features impressionistic shots of Lowe and Goodwin in character, along with Will Rothhaar as Lee Harvey Oswald and Michelle Trachtenberg as Oswald's wife, Marina. Lowe is the only speaker, and he does a credible vocal impression of JFK that serves as the voiceover for the trailer.

Rob Lowe is headed to Camelot. The trailer for National Geographic Channel's Killing Kennedy has hit the web and finds the ex-West Wing star playing John F. Kennedy in this movie based on Fox pundit Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard's bestseller about the events leading up to the 35th president's assassination. In the teaser, which was released not so coincidentally on John and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy's "diamond" wedding anniversary, Lowe offers up his best attempt at Kennedy's Boston accent as the Commander-in-Chief recites a speech delivered on the morning of his death. What then follows are melodramatic slow-motion shots of a smiling Kennedy, Jackie as played by...
