This week’s leg of The Amazing Race wasn’t the most grueling ever run, but it may have been the most uncomfortable. Interestingly, the main components of the two challenges, oil and water, are opposites of each other - but they provided equally skittish situations.
You can’t be afraid to confront your fears on The Amazing Race!
After an uneventful beginning - which had the teams catch up to each other at the airport - and after arriving at the first clue marker in Azerbaijan. the leg immediately became interesting. Along with their next destination the teams were given the Fast Forward option.
Normally I do not like the catch up points. Certainly I understand that at times these are unavoidable. They happened in the first few seasons. With so many in recent seasons, however, they seem more contrived and against the spirit of the game.

At its core, The Amazing Race is about two main principles: completing challenges and finding your way to the challenges. The best teams are adept at both and the ones that go home are often deficient in one, if not each. This week deficiencies with directions cost one team the race.
The teams started the leg departing from Turin, Italy with instructions to make their way to Bavaria, Germany by way of Ehwald, Austria. Art and Jj were over 2.5 hours ahead of the other seven teams by virtue of their fast forward in the previous leg. Mark and Bopper, last in the previous leg, were nearly nine hours behind them.
In the past few seasons The Amazing Race has dispensed with telling us when a team got to the Pit Stop in the previous leg and how that would equal their corresponding departure time that leg. With many seemingly dubious departure times of 4:37 a.

I’m sorry; I can’t do things under pressure.
I don’t know, I’ve totally forgotten how to divide.
The above quotes are both from this week’s episode of The Amazing Race. In fact, both come from the same point in the race, at the hectic Roadblock. Why do they matter? You'd think neither would ever be uttered on The Amazing Race.
Besides the ability to read a map, the ability to do things under pressure seems like something that would be of good use when deciding to go on The Amazing Race. Apparently that’s not the case for Big Brother Rachel, though.
After not really screwing up anything at all, she broke down in tears and got mad at Brendan for not understanding this apparently obvious flaw of hers. She didn’t really make a mistake and they knew they had nothing on the line.

The critical success of a season of The Amazing Race can't be determined after just one episode. Many of the teams' personalities will not come out for several legs. Similarly, future legs could be extremely dramatic or interesting, altering our opinion of the season.
So it may be too early to pass judgement, but what fun is waiting for all the facts? Let's dive right in!
The leg itself was fairly standard. There was a fun wrinkle at the Roadblock where the language of the clue fooled the teams in to having the 'wrong' person perform the skydive, but ironically it was the person actually selected for the Roadblock that ended up costing Misa and Maiya and Joey and Dan time. Not the partner duped in to skydiving.

The Amazing Race had a surprisingly rocky 18th season. The notion of bringing back 11 fan-favorite teams who failed to win their first time around seemed like a great idea in theory, but in practice, the decision to bring back eleven teams that resolutely were not All-Stars meant that longtime Race fans just had to watch some teams make the same old mistakes. (Tell me if you’ve heard this one before: The Cowboys got lost in the cities, the Goths got lost in the countryside, Jaime yelled at taxi drivers, and poor old Mel White just couldn’t keep up with the competition.

Watching the end of this week’s leg of The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business I now know what it must feel like to have to choose between your two children: awful.
The reality that the cowboys were going to be towards the back of the pack, if not last, was evident very early after Jet messed up the Roadblock. However, we were able to dream that another team would get U-Turned as well and Jet and Cord could use their speed to make up ground, pass a team and avoid a last place finish.
As the Detour wore on, however, it became obvious that a worst case scenario was developing. The cowboys would be U-Turned, alright. But one by one each of the teams I wanted to see forced to do the other half of the challenge - Kent and Vyxsin, Kisha and Jen or Gary and Mallory – skated by...

If you don’t like this season of The Amazing Race, we can’t be friends.
We’re just six episodes, only four official legs, in to the 18th season of The Amazing Race and I’m already satisfied. Every leg has been competitive. This leg was no exception. All of the teams are funny, interesting to watch and good competitors. I’m not even rooting for Ron and Christina’s demise anymore, as I once was.
As an avid watcher of reality shows I can say that an All-Star-esque season always seems to work. Survivor is three-for-three in different iterations of the idea (four-for-four if you want to count this season). The Amazing Race hit a home run with its first run at an All-Star season and this version has been better.
The reason it has been better is that the producers and leg designers (or whomever is in...

After a grueling double leg in China involving completion of a large dinosaur skeleton, Jaime and Cara were eliminated from The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business. We caught up with them and found out more about their experience the second time around and what they're up to now.
What was it like going into the Race a second time against other returning teams?
Jaime: It was exciting and an honor to be invited back for such an amazing adventure!
Cara: It was really exciting! I was really surprised there were so many from our season, but it was cool to have an opportunity to run against teams that I have watched and admired in their seasons.

Unlike the globe that it’s trotting, the current season of The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business has been disappointingly flat over the course of its initial five episodes. Sure, Mallory’s scream-and-grunt approach to the game never ceases to make me chuckle, and I’ll also admit I’m glad that the cowboys righted their ship and would up checking in first to this week’s pit stop. But for some reason, Tar‘s typical clutch-the-couch-cushion thrill has been muted for me during this all-star edition.

Here is Sean Furfaro's recap of The Amazing Race, Episode 5
Last week’s episode of The Amazing Race ended with seven teams continuing on in the Race after the Pit Stop, Zev and Justin still working on the final task, while Kent and Vyxsin tried to convince a speeding bus to turn around so they could look for their fannypack, which they left behind.
A lot of people have commented that they don’t like the “double legs” that we’ve been seeing so far this season. I actually like them, and think it’s a nice change to see the teams have to keep going without being able to rest. These teams have all done the Race before, and I’m all for making it as hard as possible for them this time around. However, if we end up seeing a double leg turn into a Non-Elimination leg, that will piss me off.

I pity the poor editor in charge of trying to inject a little suspense into Sunday night’s installment of The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business. I mean, with Goth/Sims people Kent and Vyxsin misreading their compass, driving wildly off course, and missing a mandatory flight from Japan to China, they were at a five-and-a-half-hour deficit before a single task had been completed. “It really is a million-dollar question,” said Zev, wondering where his competitors had gone. “Either they’re on a kabuki show or super, super lost.” Kent and Vyxsin eventually made up a ton of ground — I’m...

Here is Sean Furfaro's recap of The Amazing Race, Episode 4.
In last week’s Amazing Race recap, I talked about the unfairness of the penalty that was handed to Flight Time and Big Easy. Not that it was undeserved, but that the way it went down was unfair. If it was an offense that warranted a penalty, then it should have been assessed when The Globetrotters hit the mat, not after Ron and Christina whined about it to Phil.
Again, it's not the point That they got penalized, but When they got penalized. It's like driving by a police officer doing 75 in a 65 zone, and not getting a ticket...but later he gives you the ticket because the guy behind you said you were doing 75 in a 65. Ridiculous. I'm surprised it wasn't addressed in this episode.

Last week, Mel and Mike were eliminated in Tokyo. This week, teams will travel to Jade Dragon Mountain (that's a real place!) in China. Ze and Justin leave first, followed by Gary and Mallory and Ron and Christina. Ron and Christina speak Chinese, and have already been to Lijiang, China.
Kent and Vyxsin want to have a Pma (Positive Mental Attitude) but have trouble finding, then unlocking their car. Their Pma is destroyed before they even reach the airport. Jaime and Cara do not remember China fondly, and Margie and Luke remember their troubles with Kisha and Jen. All the teams show up at Narita Airport, except for Kent and Vyxsin. Vyxsin has basically lost her mind. It's trouble in Italy all over again. But according to Kent, The Amazing Race is also about miracles.

This week's episode of The Amazing Race began as the teams disembarked from a train to Sydney to take a flight to Tokyo. There were two choices: take a direct flight to Tokyo arriving at 6:15 or take a flight with a connection in Hong Kong arriving 15 minutes earlier. Although the connecting flight was riskier, five teams (including Mel and Mike) decided to take the flight through Hong Kong. Realizing that they comprised one of the least athletic teams in the race, Mel and Mike decided to take the risk of the connecting flight to shave 15 minutes off. After all: No risk, no reward.
But then sometimes you take a risk, and you still get bupkis. The connecting flight had engine problems and was delayed 90 minutes in Hong Kong. Said Mike, “It was a dog fight for last.”

My dad will never give up and that’s why sometimes you have to give up for him.

Ok, I get it. Mel is 70 years old and probably should not be wallowing around in the mud in 30 degree weather for hours on end wearing a diaper. Mike quitting for his father this week was a totally different scenario. One I can not approve of.
Had Mel been the one to give up because of his age, everyone would have understood. It certainly was crazy for a 70 year old man to be rummaging around in mud at night. But, he didn’t! After two pretty solid episodes to open the season, The Amazing Race amped things up during Sunday night’s episode, an hour that featured time penalties, flight delays, and a medical emergency that knocked a team out earlier than their time to go.
One of the main things I noticed about the show was that people’s roles are getting more defined as we go along. I came into this season only being familiar with a few teams, so the first couple of episodes did nothing to really give me teams to root for and teams to root against. But man did that ever change after tonight. First off, how awful are the Globetrotters? I mean, seriously. It’s not enough that they didn’t have a map during the Bottom Feeder Caravan, choosing again to piggyback off the work of other people, but they disingenuously “paid back” Zev & Justin...

Father and son Mel and Mike were eliminated from "The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business" on Sunday, March 6 episode. Mel, although recovered from the extension of double legs, could not keep up with the rest of the team when the temperature in Japan dropped very low during the Detour challenge.
Mike and Mel actually were not the last one in the race, but the last task to find a frog in the mud proved to be too much for them that they sought warmth in a van. The cheerleaders Jaime and Cara were eventually able to take over and reached the pit stop before the father and son. "He knew he was going to lose the race by telling me to get out," Mel said and Mike added, "My dad will never give up. That's why sometimes you have to give up for him."
Bestfriends Zev and Justin were able to...

Here is Sean Furfaro 's recap of The Amazing Race, Episode 3.
In last week’s Amazing Race recap, I commented on the ridiculous kangaroo outfits the teams had to wear, and said “I'm sure that Kisha & Jen, Luke & Margie, and Jaime & Cara all had no problem with them, because at least they weren't running around St. Petersburg in their underwear in the winter like last time.”
Remember when Tar went through that phase, where seemingly every other challenge had teams stripping down to their skivvies for Detours and Roadblocks? From winter jogging, to playing giant golf in the wind, to the incredibly awkward “SaunaBuss” (remember That one?), to the Estonian mud volleyball…it seemed like Bertram van Munster just wanted the teams stripping down all season long?
On a side note, that mud volleyball challenge in Estonia will forever remain one of my favourites of all time. Remember how Sam...

The episode started off with the Cowboys still struggling with the word puzzle. While everyone had sailed off after reciting the pass phrase, "I am between the devil and the deep blue sea," Jet and Cord were still between furrowed brows and frustrated drawls of "Son of a buck!"
All of the other teams had sailed through the bay and had already received the next clue, which instructed them to head back to Sydney and look for "To Sail To Stop," a sculpture of an anchor next to Sydney's Town Hall. The first six teams to find it would be placed on an earlier charter flight to a small mining town a few hundred miles from Sydney. The remaining teams would be placed on a later flight.
Some of the teams climbed into cabs back to Sydney to look for "To Sail to Stop." Kisha and Jen's cabbie drove...

It can’t be easy being the first evictee from a reality show, but to have to do it while wearing giant kangaroo costumes seems like a double indignity. Alas, last night’s installment of The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business gave us this exact scenario, when a pair of exhausted marsupials hopped up to the finish line only to get the ultimate bad news from a somber Phil Keoghan.
Things started off right where we left off last week: With 10 teams hitting the first pit stop and discovering that there’d be no rest, the race continued onward with a four-word clue,...

What do you get when you combine kangaroo outfits, moon shoes, paint spitting, green bunnies, fancy dancing, steakhouses, cranky dads, injured dads, magpies, ground mosaics, and an awful sense of direction?
Why, you have a pretty solid second episode of The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business. Duh.
Tonight was the second half of the first leg of the race and it was surprisingly entertaining. Any two part episode, whether it be reality or drama, tends to have parts that drag and while this wasn't the most exciting episode in the history of the show, I was into it from start to finish.
The main thing to take from "I Never Looked So Foolish In My Entire Life" is that the race can change over the most minute thing (sort of the theme for this season, really); in this case, it was finding an anchor beside town hall in Sydney with the...

Here is Sean Furfaro's recap of The Amazing Race, Episode 2.
Last week’ s season premiere of The Amazing Race ended with the teams still racing, and no one being eliminated at the Pit Stop mat with Outback Phil. This week, all 11 teams continued on their trek through Australia. Would the Cow-bros be able to overcome the huge gap that was created last week? Who is on the verge of passing out? And why are the teams dressed like Kangaroos?
My Random Thoughts:
- First of all, I need to point out that I have an issue with this season being called "Unfinished Business." Yes, I understand that all of the teams are back for a second shot at the million dollars, but only one of these 11 teams are going to "finish" their "business" by winning the race. Know what I mean?

Here is Sean Furfaro's recap of The Amazing Race, Episode 1.
A new season of the Amazing Race is off and running, and as many of you know by now (and as was first reported here back in December), this season is sub-titled Unfinished Business, with 11 teams returning for another shot at the million dollars. I’ll reiterate my initial response to the Cast List: why are we seeing only teams from Season 12 onward? Nobody from the first 11 seasons warranted an invite?
To the returning readers, Welcome back! It’s nice to see you again. And for those of you new to my Amazing Race Recaps, a hearty welcome as well, and a couple of things you should know: a) the recaps should be up within 30 minutes (often less) of when the show ends on the East Coast, b) the pictures will all have hidden captions underneath, so make sure to...

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oye, Oye, Oye!
The Amazing Race is (finally) back and this season is a special edition, The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business. We have eleven of our favorite team to ever Not win The Amazing Race coming back to compete for another chance to win the one million dollar first place prize.
What a better way to start the season than by flying to one of my favorite places in the world, Sydney, Australia. I love to watch The Amazing Race for the dynamics between the teams and the competition, but also for the incredible travel that the teams get to experience. When teams arrive somewhere that I’ve been before, I get even more excited.
All of this builds up for a tremendous start to the new season. There are plenty of things to discuss from this opening episode, but we’d be remiss if we didn...

Last night’s premiere of The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business set up a show-within-a-show premise that could bring new, unexpected, and horrifically compelling meaning to its title. Picture this: Over the course of the next few months, we’ll watch 10 returning teams from previous seasons travel the globe and encounter the types of entertaining misadventures we’ve come to expect from CBS’ venerable reality franchise. Meanwhile, back in Manly, Australia, we’ll focus on two affable cowboys and their Sisyphean journey to translate a coded message of nautical flags. By season’s end, the duo, dressed in tattered rags...

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity…again.”
If there was ever a quote that best describes any reality TV all-star season, The Amazing Race 18: Unfinished Business wasted no time in finding it, as the Cowboys (season 16) pretty much delivered the season’s tagline within the first ten minutes of episode one. Unfortunately, that’s about all the Cowboys did right in the season premiere of the Emmy-favorite.
They’re not alone in being a little unlucky, though. The 18th season of The Amazing Race is all about second chances, as these eleven teams combined to go through every awful way you can lose this show, from too much in-fighting to being U-turned to stumbling on a pivotal roadblock on the last leg, so you know there were 22 hungry, determined people on the starting line in windy Palm Spring, California. It was there when Phil Keoghan dropped the...

"The Amazing Race" is doing its second all-star edition with "Unfinished Business," which features all pairs who might have done better had there not been a mistake or some careless on their part.
The 11 teams kick things off at Palm Springs. Phil tells the teams that whichever team wins the first leg of the race will get the Express Pass, which will let them out of any task at any point along the race. The first task is to search a field of paper airplanes and bring Phil "Queensland and Northern Territories Aerial Services," or "Qantas." The first eight teams are on the first flight, the last three are on a later flight, plus the last team gets an automatic U-turn for the first Detour.
The teams have some trouble with acronyms, which kind of amazes us. Eventually Mel/Mike, Zev/Justin, Cord/Jet get their clue for Sydney, Australia.

"The Amazing Race" is kicking off an all-star season, of sorts, by bringing back 11 teams that fell short of winning the $1 million prize. The show will be broadcast in HD for the first time as the racers travel to such places as Sydney, Australia, Liechtenstein, and Tokyo, Japan.
Following are the 11 teams, listed in no particular order:
Gary Ervin
Age: 53
Occupation: Owner of Ervin Cable Construction
Mallory Ervin
Age: 25
Hometown: Morganfield, Ky.
Occupation: Entertainer
Relationship: Father/Daughter
Previous Season/Result: Season 17/6th Place
Why they're returning for "Unfinished Business": Gary and Mallory were unable to avoid elimination after getting lost in Oman for over nine hours.
Lakisha Hoffman
Age: 30
Hometown: Chicago, Ill., currently residing in Bronx, N.Y.
Occupation: Basketball Coach
Jennifer Hoffman
Age: 26

On last night’s exciting season finale of The Amazing Race, it was announced that the upcoming season will be the acclaimed reality show’s second all-star season, titled Unfinished Business, which is also reported by Radar Online. The season will take teams who competed from cycles 12 to 17 that didn’t win their respective season and have them competing for the million dollar prize. Included in the cast are Jet & Cord (2nd place, Season 16), Mel & Mike (6th place, Season 14), Zev & Justin (9th place, Season 15), Jaime & Cara (2nd place, Season 14), Kynt & Vyxin (5th place, Season 12), Ronaldo & Christina (2nd place, Season 12), Gary & Mallory (6th place, Season 17), Kisha & Jen (4th place, Season 14), Margie & Luke (3rd place, Season 14), Flight Time & Big Easy (4th place, Season 15), and Amanda & Kris (8th place, Season 14).
To put it simply, I really don’t like the casting this time. It’s an uneven mix of seasons that just doesn’t work for me.

Who says doing reality TV doesn't lead to awesome career opportunities? Of course, it helps if you look like "The Amazing Race" contestant Jaime Edmonson. She will be the centerfold in next month's Playboy.
Via the Playboy press release:
Jaime's performance on The Amazing Race, where she and fellow former Dolphins cheerleader Cara Rosenthal fought their way through 40,000 miles of travel and backbreaking tasks to an impressive second place finish, caught Hugh Hefner's attention.
Our favorite part of that is how Jaime "caught Hugh Hefner's attention." Like Hugh Hefner is anything more than a wrinkly figurehead with three blonde girlfriends (nurses) to help maintain his stud image (to help change his diaper). We would be shocked to find out Hef stays up late enough to watch "The Amazing Race."
Are you excited? It sure beats the hell out of Tara Reid in Playboy.

The latest season of The Amazing Race crossed the finish line last night and, overall, the season ended on a strong note, one that matched a very satisfying Race. While everything didn't turn out as I hoped it would, we got a finale that gave the racers a good challenge for the big prize.
Thus, no matter how things may have turned out, this Amazing Race finale earns an up arrow, but read any further and you'll run into some Spoilers below.
The Race quickly moved from China to Maui where their first challenge was a test of physical strength and endurance. It required each team to take a pig, season it with "island flavoring" (which, if my memory of Kalua Pig is correct, would be the exotic combination of oil and sea salt) and carry it to a traditional-style fire pit and prepare it for roasting. Luke and Margie handle the task amazingly,...

Tammy and Victor Jih soared to victory in tonight's season 14 finale of The Amazing Race. Of course, after the legal eagles won an earlier stage at a place called the Bird's Nest, perhaps it was only natural. The overachieving sibling attorneys, both Harvard Law grads, were followed to the finish line at Maui's King Kamehameha Golf Club by former NFL cheerleaders Cara Rosenthal and Jaime Edmondson (a gender pairing yet to win the Emmy-winning reality show) and, in third place, the mom and son team of Margie and Luke Adams—the race's first deaf contestant. The brother-and-sister litigators brought their "A-plus game," said Victor, to take the million-dollar prize over other strong...
