One of the crucial questions that came out of the final season of “Succession” was whether or not Logan Roy truly intended to leave his media empire in the hands of his oldest son, Kendall. Now the show’s creator, Jesse Armstrong, has definitively solved one piece of the puzzle.
While speaking at the Financial Times Weekend Festival, Armstrong affirmed that Logan underlined his son’s name on a piece of paper found in his safe after his death — as opposed to having crossed his name out.

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Kieran Culkin is entering the “Succession” episode “Church and State”” as his 2023 Emmy Award submission for Best Drama Actor. “Church and State” aired on May 21, 2023, and is the ninth and penultimate episode of the HBO drama’s fourth and final season.
In “Church and State,” as the Roy family members gird themselves for patriarch Logan’s (Brian Cox) wrenching and emotional funeral, Kendall (Jeremy Strong) finds himself at odds with Rava (Natalie Gold) and receives inopportune news from Jess (Juliana Canfield). Later, it’s back to scheming and plotting as usual as the pregnant Shiv (Sarah Snook) tries to reposition herself within a new political landscape and Kendall rallies supporters to his side. This article contains spoilers for the Succession finale.
Succession’s harrowing four-season run came to an end with Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) inserted as CEO of the newly-acquired GoJo version of Waystar Royco. After at least a couple of years of in-fighting, betrayals, and fleeting moments of happiness, the Roys have been relieved of their only lasting legacy and their ties to family patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox). The climactic scene during the final boardroom vote in which Shiv (Sarah Snook) decides to go back on her word and vote for the sale of the company to Lukas Mattson (Alexander Skarsgård) rather than keep the conglomerate in the hands of her brother Kendall (Jeremy Strong) was a tragic, pitiful display of shoddy family dynamics crashing and falling apart in real time. It showed all three siblings at their most emotionally raw, petty, and childish, and it wasn’t a pleasant scene to live vicariously through.

Spoiler alert: The following article contains “Succession” series finale spoilers.
After four celebrated seasons of in-fighting, scheming and brilliantly scripted family drama, HBO’s “Succession” came to an end on Sunday with the Roy family battling for control of their the media conglomerate empire, Waystar Royco.
The series finale saw the Roy siblings share a few rare moments of unity and collaboration, but built to some surprising backstabs and unexpected breakdowns that left fans reeling.
The centerpiece of the standout moments revolved around some unexpected twists. After Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) came together to put their support behind Kendall (Jeremy Strong) in their last-ditch effort to stop GoJo from buying out Waystar Royco, Shiv pulled off one of the show’s most ultimate switch-up betrayals.

The old Leo Tolstoy adage illuminates that "each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." In the span of its four seasons, "Succession" focused on a particular miserable American clan, the obscenely wealthy and influential Roys.
The show charted the schemes and (self-)sabotages of the Roy children as they warred over their potential inheritance: CEO control of the Waystar RoyCo media company, run by their (now-late) patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox). Across toxic intrigue and backstabbing, the three kids, Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Shiv (Sarah Snook), fought tooth and nail for the throne.
In the wake of Logan's death and the series finale, the Roy family tree is still not doing all right. There are tantalizing questions about the third-generation Roys, the grandkids, who are more vulnerable under their family dysfunction and the world order that their Roy forebearers enabled. While the finale does not...

This article contains spoilers for the "Succession" series finale.
"Succession" has never been a show with tidy, open-and-shut conclusions, and the series finale — "With Open Eyes" — wasn't any different. The last scene features Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong), having permanently lost his chance to run Waystar Royco, sitting in a park and unsure of what to do. The conclusions to these characters' journeys are as fitting as they are open-ended.
In the after-show featurette streaming on Max, series creator (and episode writer) Jesse Armstrong acknowledged these characters still have lives ahead of them. However, with no worries about spoilers, Armstrong was finally able to make his full case for why season 4 was the time to call it quits:
"I thought about all their stories. You know, they don't end. They will carry on, but it's sort of where this show loses interest in them because they've lost what they've wanted, which...

Spoiler warning: Here is a recap of the Succession season 4 And series finale, “With Open Eyes,” directed by Mark Mylod and written by creator Jesse Armstrong.
Succession, the Emmy-winning HBO family saga, about the Roys and their in-fighting for control of the media conglomerate, Waystar Royco, came to an end after four seasons — and in the process, finally revealed who would have a seat at the table as the company determined who would become CEO once and for all.
This comes after season 4 of Succession kicked off the Roy siblings — Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and the secretly pregnant Shiv (Sarah Snook) — determined to start their own media company following their failed coup to take out their father, Logan (Brian Cox), in the season 3 finale, when they were betrayed by Shiv’s husband, Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen), and their cousin, Greg Hirsch (Nicholas Braun).

My favorite moment from Succession is the last ten minutes of the season 2 finale, when Kendall Roy potentially declares war against his media mogul father, Logan. For the entirety of that season, Kendall had been his father’s trusted dog—doing Logan’s bidding without asking any question, following every instruction of his father to a T, and most essentially, who can forget “L to the Og”—Kendall’s iconic self-composed rap tribute to the big man on his birthday?
Not that the Little Lord Fauntleroy hadn’t tried to upend his father before. In fact, in the very first episode of Succession, his heart broke when Logan stomped on his dream of becoming the Wayster-Royco CEO by refusing to step down, which set the course of the entire show. So, Kendall tried his hand at winning the approval of his disapproving father while trying to ascend to the throne...

We probably sound like a broken record at this point, but it is always worth pointing out when a TV show truly capitalizes on the fact that it’s a TV show. The concept of an episode has been diluted over the years, with so many shows seeing a runtime as a means to an end or just another hour to fill on the way to an ending. “Succession” has become one of the all-time TV greats by understanding that each individual piece of the puzzle can be a hand-crafted, standalone work of its own.
So picking out the best episodes of “Succession” is both a challenging and rewarding idea. They’re defined by moments in a “Friends”-esque way — The One Where Tom Throws Water Bottles; The One Where Tom Flips a Desk Over; The One Where Tom Steals Logan’s Chicken — or an “Always Sunny”-esque way — The...

It’s not an easy task to form a prediction around a show that is made up of perpetually moving pieces. But then again, what is easy about Succession? A show where the Stockholm syndrome-esque undercurrent of love flows begrudgingly underneath all the abuse, betrayal, and straight-up soul-crushing filth. For once, though, I’d like to sit and relish the “I told you so” I’m about to hurl at the Shiv naysayers, even as I compulsively chew my fingernails to the nub at the thought of what the series finale holds. I’d also, with the utmost sincerity, like to acknowledge the absolute, beyond-flawless little details that compose the masterpiece that is Succession. And when I push aside my personal aversion for method acting for the sake of appreciating Jeremy Strong’s self-destructive supremacy, what I really am getting at is the faithful and admittedly biased love I have...

It was time to say goodbye to Logan Roy during Sunday’s penultimate episode of Succession.
Episode 9, titled “Church and State,” puts Logan to rest with a massive affair that takes place inside a Manhattan cathedral. It’s 80 minutes that are heavy with a mix of emotions as the Roy siblings are finally confronted with the reality that their father is gone. In the five episodes that led to this moment, they’ve managed to shrug off their grief with the distraction of the looming GoJo deal and the presidential election. But now, there’s nowhere left to hide.
Their grief bubbling to the surface is clear from the beginning, when Kendall (Jeremy Strong) lashes out at his ex-wife Rava (Natalie Gold) for taking their kids out of the city for fear of violent protests as the contentious election continues to play out. Then he lashes out again at his...

Saying goodbye to your father is one of the hardest things you will ever do.
It doesn't matter what kind of relationship you had with him, whether he was a good man or not. The enormity of saying goodbye to the man who gave you life is hard.
Succession Season 4 Episode 9 put that to good use, setting up the finale in which all of the siblings could very well be at each others' throats.
Learning to live without someone who loomed large in your life can be very challenging. Doing it after the death of a man on the level of Logan Roy seems nearly impossible.
There comes a point when the reality of your loss slaps you across the face. You either break down and sob or stand tall, and "Church and State" played all the angles.

Logan Roy is finally laid to rest in the penultimate episode of “Succession,” aptly titled “Church and State.” The right-wing media mogul’s funeral also unearths the best evidence yet as to which of his three youngest children – Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Siobhan (Sarah Snook) or Roman (Kieran Culkin) – has truly inherited the ruthless businessman’s poison. On the day after their family-owned Atn news network dubiously declared Republican fascist Jeryd Mencken (Justin Kirk) president-elect, the siblings struggle to control their sense of loss while trying not to lose total control of their larger conglomerate, Waystar Royco, to Swedish internet mogul Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård). As a result, they support and screw each other like never before.
Questionable Accounts
The morning after election night. Shiv’s watching an Atn report about Democratic candidate Daniel Jimenez asking for certification to be prevented until all absentee ballots that were burned in the swing state of Wisconsin are counted.

When the Roy family stepped inside a church, the surrounding city erupted out of sheer indignation. It’s unfair, really. Under different circumstances, Logan Roy’s funeral would be met with celebration; the proletariat he stepped on to secure his place atop the patriarchal pile are rid of their tormentor. His empire is on the verge of collapse and his legacy along with it. But Logan’s influence outlives him, robbing the people of their long-awaited party. We see it in the streets, as protesters march in anger over an election hijacked by his offspring, and we hear it in the church, when those same kiddos proselytize their father’s life to the would-be president, their peers, and plenty others from their sacrilegious perch behind the pulpit.
But the fears of violence that shut down New York also have no impact on Logan or his funeral.

Two political consultants who advised on “Succession” were shocked by how “chilling” Sunday night’s episode was and how “eerily prescient” the writers of the HBO drama continue to be.
Season 4’s eighth episode, titled “America Decides,” sees the Roy siblings squabble with one another and put their thumb on the scale in Atn’s first election night coverage since the shocking death of their father, Logan (Brian Cox). The fictional network ends up calling the state of Wisconsin before all the votes can be counted in favor of Jeryd Mencken and later calls the entire election for the far-right presidential candidate.
In an interview segment reflecting on the episode Monday night, CNN’s Jake Tapper drew parallels between the show, the behind-the-scenes communications of Fox News that emerged in its legal battle with Dominion Voting Systems and the conservative channel’s now-infamous call that Joe Biden was projected to win Arizona in the 2020 election.

If there was any hope that Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) could change his ways and become a better person in the wake of his father’s death, it has been thoroughly squashed by the latest episode of Succession “America Decides.” Watching Kendall work with his siblings to succeed in spite of his father rather than for his approval has been one of the most interesting and compelling arcs this season, but we should have known that it was too good to be true. Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) have already shown that they’re looking out for themselves above whatever bond they have as family by siding with Mencken (Justin Kirk) and Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård), respectively, so it was really only a matter of time before we saw the full return of “killer” Kendall.

Things came to a head on Sunday’s episode of “Succession,” the eighth installment of its fourth and final season. Portraying the political rise and Republican party presidential win of Jeryd Mencken on election night, the episode sees the four Roy children locking horns on how to best proceed with their reporting on Atn, with Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Roman (Kieran Culkin) in particular disagreeing on prematurely calling the election in Mencken’s favor.
Reflecting on the conflict in a post-episode HBO featurette video, Snook conceded that Shiv believes in democracy and doesn’t want a dictator to be president — but that still doesn’t make her a good person.
“At that point, I don’t think anyone wants Mencken to be president. Yes, Shiv is being clandestine about her intentions, but at the same time, that’s exactly what he’s doing,” she said of Roman. Shiv wanted all...

The presidential election could swing either way this week on Succession… and so could the Roy family, honestly.
It’s election night, and Tom is feeling pressure to deliver big ratings for Atn. (He’s also getting no sleep, he tells Greg, due to “marital strife.”) Greg reveals he partied with Matsson and Oskar late into the night and asks Tom if he knew about Shiv and Matsson’s “business alliance.” Uh no, Tom did not know about that. Atn’s resident elections analyst Darwin tells the staff that Mencken is overperforming in exit polls, but it looks like Jimenez will edge him out.

Sunday’s episode of “Succession,” titled “America Decides,” offered a heart-pounding hour of television as Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin), Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) oversee Atn’s first election coverage since the shocking death of Logan (Brian Cox) – and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
After Shiv and Roman argue over whether to call the election for the far-right Jeryd Mencken, Kendall becomes racked with guilt about ultimately backing him in an effort to put a stop to the Gojo deal. Earlier in the episode, he receives a concerned call from his ex-wife Rava (Natalie Gold) about being followed by an SUV, only for that concern to quickly turn to anger as she learns that it was Kendall that ordered the vehicle in an attempt to protect her and their adopted daughter Sophie, who is pushed and has racial slurs thrown at her by a...

It’s Election Day! Episode 8 of the final season of “Succession” finds the Roys and crew navigating the momentous occasion, the first that American Television Network will be covering without its late founder Logan Roy at the helm.
Though titled “America Decides,” the nail-biting hour is really about network boss Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) figuring out how to spin the night’s news for Atn’s rabid conservative audience base, all the while fighting interference from the business and partisan considerations of Roy’s children Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin), Connor (Alan Ruck) and Siobhan (Sarah Snook), who also happens to be the wife Tom had an earth-scorching argument the night before.
May the best candidate win. Spoiler Alert: They won’t.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Succession” Season 4, Episode 8, “America Decides.”]
It all started with a Coke.
Last season, at the Future Freedom Summit in Virginia, Logan (Brian Cox) was parched. It was late, his fridge was bare, so he called up his good buddy — the Vice President of the United States — and asked if he could bring him a soda. The V.P., agitated over being roused in the wee hours of the morning, didn’t bring him anything. He came, he spoke, he bored the piss out of everyone in the room, but there was no Coke. No Coke, until Congressman Jeryd Mencken (Justin Kirk) stopped by, kissed the can, popped the tab, and plopped it down in front of Logan.
“I heard you wanted one,” he said, to which Logan replied with his simple but satisfied thanks. “Anointed with a Coke,” Mencken said, and walked out of the room.
Logan, of course, didn’t need a Coke.

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about lotsa shows including Bridgerton, 9-1-1, Chicago Fire and The Bear!

‘Succession’ Season 4, Episode 7 Recap & Ending, Explained: Is Kendall Going To Betray His Siblings?
A platter of sliders kept from acting out with little American flag toothpicks, tiny portions of fries peppered with flakey salt, and an embarrassingly unimpressive selection of reds—it’s the tailgate party at the monster house, and America itself is on the menu. It’s getting harder and harder to campaign for any one of the Roy kids when the passing of their cult leader has done nothing to stop their genetic toxicity from making marionettes out of them. While I’m not particularly concerned that the end of Succession may be approaching a Game Of Thrones fate, I’m not deluding myself with the expectation of a classic “good vs. bad” showdown. The sooner you come to terms with the fact that the show that you love unconditionally bears no note of morality, the better.

This post contains spoilers about the latest episode of "Succession."
Fascism has been bleeding into "Succession" for years now, but you'd be forgiven if you didn't really notice. The drama has consistently sidelined talk about the rise of authoritarianism, relegating the most serious global news to quick asides that the Roy family often sandwiches in between cutting insults and emotional breakdowns.
The show is a satire at heart, but its sharpest commentary comes between the lines, as the self-absorbed siblings think as much about their massive influence over American politics as they do about what they'll be having for lunch. In the latest episode, Kendall (Jeremy Strong) even jokes offhand about inheriting his dad's political contact sheet, including "crypto-fascists," "right-wing nut jobs," "venture capital Dems," and "centrist ghouls." As its final season kicks into high gear, though, it's becoming increasingly clear that the personal lives of the "Succession" ensemble are...

This post contains spoilers for this week’s episode of Succession, “Tailgate Party.”
If you are a fan of prestige TV in general, chances are you have heard the fable of the frog and the scorpion many, many, many times. It is among the most overused thematic devices of this era, which has been dominated by shows about terrible people doing terrible things to those who’ve trusted them, simply because it’s in their nature.
“Tailgate Party” knows better than to have anyone summarize that story for the benefit...

Following breakouts to the Norwegian mountains and Hollywood Hills, “Succession” found the walls of a single Manhattan location closing in again for Episode 7, titled “Tailgate Party.”
While not quite as claustrophobic as the season’s fourth episode, set entirely in the late Logan Roy’s penthouse, this presidential election eve shindig at Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Tom Wambsgans’ (Matthew Macfadyen) high-rise triplex is even more emotionally fraught. Shiv’s brothers Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Roman Roy (Kieran Culkin) maneuver to block the sale of family media empire Waystar to goofy Swedish online mogul — and unwelcome guest — Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård), while trying to put out smaller fires that the looming election and their own incompetence have ignited. It all leads up to the five-and-a-half minute, knockdown dragout fight between Shiv and Tom that we’ve been waiting for since Season 1.

Election Day is almost here on Succession, but one key partnership might be fractured before the votes are even counted.
Tom is in a good mood as Sunday’s episode opens, bringing Shiv breakfast along with a new poll that shows Jimenez ahead of Mencken by four points on election eve. They’re hosting a pre-election party that night, and Tom also gives Shiv a gift for being “such a hot piece of ass”: a scorpion encased in glass. He meant it as a joke… but she’s not laughing. Meanwhile, Kendall’s ex-wife Rava tells him their daughter...

"Succession" is undeniably one of the best shows on television. While full of complicated business lingo and rich people problems, it is ultimately a show about a broken family that can't seem to mend itself. The core sibling trio of Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook), and Roman (Kieran Culkin) are really terrible people, but the way they just seek the validation of their father, media mogul Logan (Brian Cox), is both painfully relatable and sad. This dynamic has hooked viewers from the very beginning of the show, and with its fourth season rapidly approaching, it looks like this will be taken to the next level.
However, with a show as hefty as this one, it's understandable that many viewers don't remember some key plot points. Thankfully, we've compiled a list of every major development from the third season's finale, "All The Bells Say," that you need to remember in...

At the beginning of the third season of “Succession,” Kendall Roy, played by Emmy-winner Jeremy Strong, was on a high: and for once, the reason was virtuous, not chemical. His attempt to overthrow his father, Logan (Brian Cox), from Waystar Royco — the family business that happens to be a multinational conglomerate — appeared to be going well. But for Kendall, peaks quickly tend to become valleys. As Strong puts it during a conversation with “Succession” executive producer Adam McKay moderated by Variety, in those early episodes, “I thought a lot about Uncle Albert from ‘Mary Poppins’ — the laughing, floating guy, trying to keep up this positivity that is really a desperate dance over an abyss.”
