Whenever I get asked to recommend a good horror movie- I immediately take into consideration who I’m recommending it to. The key to a good movie recommendation is to compliment the other person’s tastes and suggest something that will comfortably expand their horizons. It also helps if the movie you’re recommending is criminally underseen for how incredibly well-made it is. Here’s what I mean- In 2020- yes, That 2020- the entire world was affected by unprecedented events that caused the everyday lives of everyday people to dramatically change. One of the many industries that suffered during this time was the Movie Theater industry. It was rough. It was stale. It was fucking Groundhog Day. At first, there were delays- movies just weren’t coming out at all. Then, some that were meant for theaters and Imax ended up going straight to streaming, delays, delays, more delays.

This article contains spoilers for Daniel Kaluuya’s The Kitchen.
Who’s that knocking at the door?
That’s the question left with viewers when credits roll on the Netflix movie The Kitchen, directed by Kibwe Tavares and actor Daniel Kaluuya. Working with his co-writers Rob Hayes and Joe Murtagh, Kaluuya creates a bleak future for England in which rampant inequality and increased privatization of property has left many homeless. Despite its sci-fi setting, The Kitchen doesn’t concern itself with the usual tropes of the genre, focusing instead on the dramatic tension between loner Izi (Kane Robinson) and an orphan boy called Benji (Jedaiah Bannerman).
At least until the end, that is. The film builds to a thrilling climax, one that might leave some viewers wondering what happened and how it relates to the themes of The Kitchen.
How Does The Kitchen End?

Daniel Kaluuya says he’d “become what people around me wanted from me” in the industry, but says he’s now “way happier” after becoming more honest in his career.
The co-writer and co-director behind Netflix’s upcoming film, The Kitchen, recently spoke to GQ Magazine about how his latest film project encapsulates the kind of art that matters to him, as well as why he changed how he navigated his career following his work on Nope.
The Judas and the Black Messiah star said that he is now “way happier” than he was two years ago, specifically the period following his 2021 Oscar win, after realizing he wasn’t being honest as a person and artist. “It really felt like, look at me: I’ve got everything that you’re supposed to get. I’ve got everything that people would die for,” Kaluuya says. “And then I wasn’t happy.

We made it to 2024! Or, rather, we've almost made it at the time of writing. It's been a long year wherein a historical dual strike that was prompted (and then unnecessarily prolonged) by studio greed brought the film and TV industry to a grinding halt for months. But all that's behind us now, and it's time for a fresh start. Even Netflix is turning over a new leaf by making viewership data available for just about every title on the platform. Well, sort of. It's still Netflix, so, of course, its newfound transparency comes with an asterisk or two.

Linda Yaccarino, on her 101st day as CEO of Elon Musk’s X (aka Twitter), announced several new hires and organizational changes at the social network.
New hires include Brett Weitz, who was general manager of Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNT, TBS and truTV, who joins X as the new head of content, talent and brand sales. Weitz exited Wbd in the spring of 2022.
Monique Pintarelli, a former Turner sales exec who most recently was president at digital advertising company Teads, was named X/Twitter’s head of the Americas, overseeing sales and partnerships across the U.S., Canada and Latin America.
In addition, Yaccarino — who left as head of sales at NBCUniversal this year to take the CEO job at X/Twitter — recruited Carrie Stimmel, previously chief growth officer at NBCU, as global agency leader. And Rob Hayes, once NBC Entertainment’s EVP of digital media who most recently...

Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of X (formerly Twitter) has unveiled a new leadership and sales team at the social platform, including a number of executives familiar to the media and entertainment business.

Shorts have arguably suffered the most in the wake of the mass cinema closures over the last year. Almost always relegated to the dim light of a laptop screen anyway, without our live, in-person, in-cinema film festivals, shorts haven’t been seen big and loud in much too long, and when they have been, have only done so in punishingly small numbers.
But with FrightFest’s return, there’s hope, as the fest and its programmers show no sign of taking a step back with its Short Film Showcases, packing three feature-length slots full of the good stuff. The best of which we’ve cobbled together and outlined below:
David J. Ellison’s Familiar is, as it’s title might suggest, nothing sensationally new. But while it ticks a lot of the classic gothic horror boxes, it’s Ellison’s terrific appetite for atmosphere that makes it a must, building...

Don’t get too taken in by a first impression — that’s a lesson learned by the characters in “Monday,” but it’s valuable advice for the audience as well. What starts out as a sexy, sun-soaked romp becomes a heartbreaking examination of two people who are absolutely wrong for each other.
Not just any filmmaker can craft sex scenes that are both exhilarating in the moment and, in the aggregate, essential to building plot and character, but director Argyris Papadimitropoulos manages that delicate balance. The Greek locations (shot by Hristos Karamanis) are gorgeous, but what starts like a travelogue winds up more of a tragedy.
We first meet Chloe at a party, drunk and leaving screaming voicemails for the boyfriend who has stood her up. Host Argyris (Giorgos Pyrpasopoulos) introduces her to his friend Mickey (Sebastian Stan), the DJ, since they’re both American. Both attracted to him and emotionally fragile,...

During the summer 2018 production of Argyris Papadimitropoulos’ steamy romance “Monday,” no one could have guessed that the party-hearty film would eventually stand out as a curio of a bygone era. Shot on location in Greece and aided immeasurably by a game cast of random extras, many of them giddily bumping up against each other with wild abandon, movies like “Monday” will be made again. But for now,
Wherever you might fall on that spectrum, the high energy of Papadimitropoulos’ direction stands out; so do stars Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough’s dedication to two sneakily tough characters who cycle through a wide variety of emotions over the course of a fraught romance. While the screenplay, penned by Papadimitropoulos and “Chewing Gum” writer Rob Hayes, seems to have drawn its inspiration from decades of indie romances, the chemistry between Stan and Gough (and the trust that Papadimitropoulos placed in them) helps...

IFC Films has acquired the North American rights to “Monday,” a Greek drama and romance that stars “Avengers” star Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough (“Colette”). The indie distributor has set an April 16 release date for the film.
“Monday” is the fourth film by director Argyris Papadimitropoulos and was a selection of the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival and the 2020 Toronto Film Festival.
“Monday” is set in Athens and stars Sebastian Stan as a DJ who is introduced by his friend to Chloe (Gough) one hot summer night. The attraction between the pair is immediately palpable — so palpable that before they know it they’re waking up naked on the beach Saturday morning. And so it goes that a one night stand on Friday turns into a whirlwind weekend romance that leads to serious conversations when they face the harsh sunlight on Monday morning.

Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough have zero chemistry as a couple dealing with a series of uninteresting relationship crises in a disappointing drama
Four years ago, the Greek film-maker Argyris Papadimitropoulos made a vivid impression with Suntan: a bleakly hilarious Death-In-Venice-type affair set in a seaside resort, featuring a sad middle-aged man who tortures himself with his tragic infatuation with a beautiful young woman on holiday.
Here is his follow-up, in the English language, featuring Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes from Marvel’s Captain America movies) and the Irish stage star Denise Gough, with a script co-written by the director with the award-winning British dramatist Rob Hayes (who worked with Michaela Coel on the TV comedy Chewing Gum). Sadly, despite all the talent involved, this is a disappointment: an unconvincing, undeveloped and emotionally directionless non-drama that just goes pointlessly around and around in circles. All of this film’s various moods – erotic,...

The third feature from director Oz Perkins, Gretel & Hansel is a stylish, female-centric reimagining of the classic Grimm fairytale. Creepy and atmospheric rather than opting for traditional scares, it’s unquestionably worth seeing for Perkins’ distinctive visuals.
Set in an indistinct but fairytale-esque time and place, the film stars Sophia Lillis as level-headed 16 year old Gretel and Sammy Leaky as her 8 year old brother Hansel, who’s cute but not too smart. When they’re cast out by their mother due to famine and poverty (“Dig yourself some pretty little graves” is her parting advice), they have a few minor adventures (including a magic mushroom trip and an unsavoury job offer) before winding up deep in the woods at the surprisingly modern-looking home of...

Director Osgood Perkins gives us the story behind his dark new fable, Gretel & Hansel, and why he thinks Sophia Lillis is a unique star.
In Gretel & Hansel, director Osgood Perkins and writer Rob Hayes take the classic fairy tale first set down by the Brothers Grimm in 1812 (although its origins may go back 500 years earlier) and return it to its dark roots while giving it just the slightest modern tweak--an act as simple as switching the order of the names in the title.
Sophia Lillis (Stephen King's It movies) stars as Gretel, who is charged with protecting her younger brother Hansel (Sammy Leakey) after the siblings are sent away by their desperate mother during a time of famine and disease. Any girl who reads a fairy tale learns early on to be suspicious of magical gifts—no blessing of beauty gifted to a princess, nor a second sight that elevates a humble village girl, is given freely. There is always an uneven trade, a future obligation, a debt that will eventually be collected. Because it is usually girls who are the recipients, female readers become primed to anticipate the inevitable strings, and to recognize these same patterns in their own lives as they grow into womanhood.
In Gretel & Hansel, Gretel (Sophia Lillis) becomes reader and subject both: She’s the beneficiary of a witch’s whims yet she’s also granted the chance to actually consider the gift offered to her. At a glance, Osgood Perkins’ film is a welcome dark take on the source material.

Aside from the odd Oscar contender expanding into wide release, January is not known as a fertile period for film releases, and in particular, the schlocky January horror film has practically become its own genre by now. So perhaps the best one can say about “Gretel & Hansel,” Oz Perkins’ revision of the Brothers Grimm tale, is that it is absolutely not a typical January horror release.
More ominous than exciting, more bleak than violent, and inspired more by Robert Eggers and Dario Argento than anything in the Hammer and Blumhouse canons, “Gretel & Hansel” is a stylish, impressive-looking attempt to bring some arthouse horror sensibilities to the multiplex, under cover of a PG-13 fairy tale riff. It’s not exactly successful at doing so – in fact, it’s often kind of a mess, especially when it comes to the inexplicable revelations of its third act – but at least credit...

The Brothers Grimm were aptly named: fairy tales like “Hansel and Gretel,” about a destitute couple dying of famine, who abandon their children in the woods to save their own lives, are already scary before a big, bad child-eater comes along. But sure enough, those poor children wander into the ever-so-tempting gingerbread house of a magical witch, who thoroughly intends to devour young Hansel, luring poor Gretel into helping prepare the meal.
Transforming “Hansel and Gretel” into a horror movie is hardly a cognitive leap, and it’s been done before, but perhaps never as stylishly and intelligently as in Osgood “Oz” Perkins’ “Gretel & Hansel.” The latest film from the horror auteur is full of severe production design and sensitive characterizations, and unsettling ideas about where fairy tales — and in particular, tales of villainous witches — come from in the first place.

While he may only be three films into his directorial career thus far, Osgood Perkins has quickly become one of my favorite filmmakers working today, with Gretel & Hansel firmly establishing Perkins as a thoughtful and visionary storyteller who can confidently find new ways to explore timeless stories. A haunting and extraordinarily crafted exploration of the mistreatment of women and our perceptions of evil, if you think you know the journey that Gretel & Hansel will be taking because you know the story of the original fairy tale—think again.
In Gretel & Hansel, we’re introduced to a story about a young girl in a pink bonnet who has special powers, and because of her abilities, those around begin to fear the young girl’s abilities, ultimately exiling her to the depths of the forest to live alone. Beware any house that smells of cake. The newest fright film by Osgood "Oz" Perkins, Gretel & Hansel promises a grim version of a familiar old story. Perkins has certainly ignited a distinctive trail through the horror forest, beginning with The Blackcoat's Daughter (2015) and continuing with I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House. Working this time from a script by Rob Hayes, his newest feature is described (officially) thusly: "A long time ago in a distant fairytale countryside, a young girl leads her little brother into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil." Nothing like a 'nexus of terrifying evil' to suggest a film that's been rated PG-13, right?...

Orion Pictures has released the first trailer for Gretel & Hansel. To show in theatres this 2020, Gretel & Hansel re-envisions the Brothers Grimm's 19th Century fairy tale. Very dark, the trailer shows a brother and sister, in the house of an isolated woman. Here, the children are fed, in preparation for what? Most everyone knows how this tale will play out. However, director Oz Perkins (The Blackcout's Daughter) and writer Rob Hayes' take on the material looks a bit different. This title stars: Sophia Lillis, Charles Babalola ("Black Mirror"), Alice Krige and Jessica De Gouw. The film's first trailer is hosted below, along with the movie poster here. The storyline for this film version follows the witch more closely, than previous interpretations. How did the witch begin down her demonic path? And, how many previous victims has she eaten? Gretel and Hansel will find out as they flee disease and pestilence,...

Orion Pictures has released an unsettling first trailer for the dark Grimm fairytale horror thriller Gretel & Hansel. The film stars It star Sophia Lillis as Gretel and it actually looks pretty damn creepy!
According to EW, the story follows Gretel and her younger brother Hansel, played by Sammy Leake. “They leave home during a time of pestilence and famine. On their travels they encounter a kindly huntsman (Charles Babalola) before finding solace in the home of an elderly woman (Alice Krige) whose motives may not be altogether pure.”
For those of you familiar with the story, the elderly woman wants to lure the kids into her over so she can cook them and eat them. People are just crazy like that.
The film comes from Osgood Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House) and the script was written by Rob Hayes.

When you’ve got Hollywood bona fides as impressive as Oz Perkins’, the bar is set high. With two successful horror films under his belt and a third on the way, it’s safe to say the actor, writer, and director is well on his way to stepping out of the shadow cast by his famous father, “Psycho” star Anthony Perkins. For his third feature film as director, Perkins has set his sights on a dark re-imagining of the famous Brothers Grimm fairytale. In the newly released first trailer, “It Chapter Two” star Sophia Lillis leads a chilling re-telling in “Gretel & Hansel.”
While the general story is well known already, this is what we know from a synopsis of the film (via EW): “A girl (Lillis) and her younger brother (Sammy Leakey) leave home during a time of pestilence and famine. On their travels they encounter a kindly...

Departing NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said goodbye Monday to the network that he led for nearly eight years.
Shortly after NBC announced Monday that veteran executives Paul Telegdy and George Cheeks would take over as heads of NBC’s entertainment division, Greenblatt sent a memo to staff thanking colleagues. “I love this network and our parent company, but since NBC is back on track and has achieved such great success I think it’s time for me to turn to a new challenge,” Greenblatt wrote.
The news that Greenblatt had decided to leave NBC, first reported by Variety Friday, surprised the industry. Under Greenblatt, the Peacock has become the most dominant broadcaster. Over four of the last five seasons, it has ranked as the top-rated primetime network in the 18-49 demo. NBC also finished the 52-week 2017-18 season as the No. 1 network in nearly every ratings category, including total...

The expansion of the short form Emmy category to include five awards is a sign of the fast-paced times as content creators grow their offerings and established networks and broadcasters see the value in digital shorts as a way to build brands and keep audiences engaged.
Take, for example, NBC’s digital team, which recently submitted offshoot short-form content for three shows, “This Is Us,” “The Voice” and “Saturday Night Live” for Emmy consideration in short-form awards. NBC Digital executive vice president Rob Hayes says the goal of that content was to keep fans returning to the shows and build a bigger audience on social media.
“On ‘This Is Us,’ we basically had to build it from scratch and lean into what we thought would be elements of storytelling that would resonate with the audiences on these platforms,” Hayes says.
