Legendary Pictures has announced that they will start developing a new Godzilla movie based on the legendary monster. They have obtained rights to the iconic character from Japan’s Toho Company, which is responsible for over 25 Godzilla movies.
Legendary is producing the movie through a deal with Warner Bros., and hope to announce a director soon to helm the movie. Looks like that date will arrive in 2012, when the film is slated for release.
Back in 1998, director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) turned the character into a summer blockbuster that grossed $379 million worldwide.

The last time a westernised Godzilla graced our screens it was in the 1998 film brought to us by Roland Emmerich and Sony Pictures, the film, which starred Matthew Broderick and Jean Reno, was an affirmed failure as it was panned by fans and critics alike. At the time it was said that Godzilla (Gojira) would never succeed as a Hollywood produced property, however it seems that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are set to try and prove people wrong, with another take on the larger-than-life character.
Legendary Pictures have just completed negotiations with Japanese studio Toho Co. and are set to bring the havoc-wreaking lizard back to the big screen. Warner Bros. are set to co-produce and co-finance the picture, and Toho will also release the film in Japan!

Not even Ferris Bueller could save the 1998 version of Godzilla for me. It was as slow and ponderous as the eponymous creature and Roland Emmerich’s vision was not able to capture the atomic majesty of the Showa series, and despite its box office takings it remains a vapid revision of the monster.
But hey! Let’s no worry about all that now – Bloody Disgusting reported a while ago that Legendary Pictures were talking up a new film, and today Heat Vision confirmed this, there will be another Godzilla film, scheduled for a 2012 release.
In this post Cloverfield world Warner Bros, who are partnering with Legendary, will need to bring something more than a massive monster tearing New York a new Hudson, and though Godzilla is an iconic creature whose reach spans across numerous media I’m hoping that producers Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Brian Rogers have something special...

Is America ready for another Godzilla movie? According to the Heat Vision Blog [1], Legendary Pictures have just finished negotiating the rights to a new movie based on Japan's most famous monster, and Warner Brothers will co-produce, co-finance and distribute the film. Bloody Disgusting [2] first reported on rumours that this deal was in the works last summer [3], and now it appears that their source was 100% on the money. "Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise... Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop culturally relevant for as long as it has." It's still early in the game, but they are hoping to...

Monday, March 29th 2010The Tokyo TimesGODZILLA Returns To Wreak Havoc. Tokyo Safe For Now.By Hiroshi Fukikama - Looks like the tables have finally turned on the stupid Americans! Last year, a lazy American website called The Bloody Disgusting reported that Japan's menacing pain-in-butt monster Godzilla would be returning from his home in the sea.We here in Japan raugh at such stupid news. We know at all times when and where Godzilla located and his resting periods. He wasn't scheduled to return to Tokyo for another 4 years. We have already begun fireproofing our buildings and creating evacuation plans for when big stupid lizard returns. But we did lose track of stupid lizard over the last six months. Did he move from our beautiful Japanese shore? Was he as disgusted by us at the dolphin killings? Even Godzilla wouldn't kill dolphin! It appears that another stupid round eye American website...

Godzilla never stays dead for long. Granted, the 1998 Columbia TriStar version directed by Roland Emmerich seemed to kill off any ambition to make further Godzilla movies in the States, simply by virtue of being truly awful. But now Legendary Pictures, the company behind 300 and The Dark Knight, is bringing an American Godzilla back to screens, thanks to a licensing deal with Toho Company. A press release from Legendary announces the development, but doesn't offer many details in terms of creative talent. Producers include Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Brian Rogers. A director will be announced shortly. At first glance, it's difficult to muster any enthusiasm for this, thanks to the Emmerich film. That was the late '90s movie (not The Phantom Menace) that made me swear off blockbusters for awhile. (Or at least swear off any more than a passing attachment to them.) When announcing a film that will...

Legendary Pictures will set up "Godzilla" with Warner Bros. Pictures for a release some time in 2012. Legendary announced Monday it had obtained rights to the iconic monster character from Japan's Toho Co., which has overseen more than 25 "Godzilla" films. Toho will still release the film in Japan. Legendary apparently said they are going to announce a director shortly. Any thoughts? Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Brian Rogers will produce. Yoshimitsu Banno, Kenji Okuhira and Doug Davison are serving as executive producers. "Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop-culturally relevant for as long as it has," said Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of Legendary.
