Since her debut in the 1986 animated "Transformers" movie, Arcee has been one of the most famous Autobots of all. The default girl Transformer, Arcee rocks a feminine pink-and-white color scheme and either a sports car or motorcycle vehicle mode. She's also had a bit of a rough history.
Arcee was considered for the 2007 "Transformers" film (check out concept art of her here), but like a few other characters, she was cut during development. Co-writer Roberto Orci explained the removal to IGN: "The idea of a female Transformer needs its own explanation, and there just wasn't going to be enough time."
The sequel, "Revenge of the Fallen," featured Arcee, but in one of its many faults, it didn't do much with her. Arcee is one of a trio of female motorcycle transformers; she's painted pink while her sisters are blue and purple (media differs on if the trio are separate...

Teri Hendrich Cusumano went into contract negotiations with the major studios with the goal of making major gains for animation color designers. Such workers choose the color palette for animated films and TV shows, and traditionally they have tended to be women.
They have also been paid about 300 per week less than the designers who do characters, backgrounds and props. While she emphasized the gender disparity in her presentations to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, that argument did not persuade the employers.
“The studios do not want to acknowledge they are engaging in gender discrimination,” she said. “They basically just ignore that.”
She also provided testimony from animation bosses — art directors and showrunners — about the value that color designers bring to a project. That argument played better, she said. The AMPTP did not agree to eliminate the pay gap for color designers, but did close it by one third.

The Animation Guild, saying that “the time is now for a fair contract,” will hold a rally in Burbank on Sunday in support of its ongoing negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers. The guild’s current film and TV contact had originally been set to expire last July 29 but has been extended several times to allow the on-again, off-again bargaining to continue.
“After an unprecedented 12 days of negotiations, The Animation Guild (Tag) Negotiations Committee continues to work hard to represent the best interests of all Tag members,” the guild, IATSE Local 839, said in a statement. “Tag members, family and friends, and community allies are invited to attend the rally and show support for a fair deal.”
Speakers at Sunday’s rally will include IATSE vice president Michael Miller; Tag business rep Steve Kaplan; Tag organizer Ben Speight; and Negotiations Committee members Mairghread Scott, Teri Henrich-Cusumano and Sydney Sharp.

The Animation Guild is gearing up for its contract negotiations next week, with animation writers looking to see a significant boost in pay as part of their new deal with studios.
Animation writers are organized under the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, and have long been paid much less than their live-action counterparts, who belong to the Writers Guild of America. They have begun campaigning on social media, using the hashtag #PayAnimationWriters, and are hoping to ride a wave of labor activism to make significant gains in talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
“We really deserve parity with the WGA,” said Mairghread Scott, who has written on the “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Transformers” animated series, and who chairs the union’s writers committee. “There’s no difference in quality and no difference in difficulty. We deserve to be paid commensurately with writers who do the same job.

The Animation Guild, IATSE Local 839, will host a Zoom webinar Wednesday night to offer tips to recent college graduates on breaking into the animation industry during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Guild officials say the animation business has been “thriving” during the pandemic, while most other sectors of the industry have been completely shut down. “Over the last two weeks, animation studios and productions, including Bento Box, Disney TV, Cartoon Network and Rick & Morty have posted hiring notices,” the guild told Deadline.
“The coronavirus has affected recent graduates tremendously, not only robbing them of the traditions that mark the completion of a degree but making the transition into the workforce more challenging,” the guild said. “Many of the resources available to them in the past – portfolio reviews, student galleries, recruiting events – have been cancelled. This webinar will provide much-needed insights as graduates prepare to start their careers in the field of animation.

Ending a fifteen movie story arc, Justice League Dark: Apokolips War is DC’s Endgame as we see the Justice League regroup after the decimation of Earth and attempting to finally defeat Darkseid.

All of the marketing promises that Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, out today for digital streaming, is the final chapter of the DC Animated Movie Universe. Similar to Avengers: Infinity War/Endgame wrapping up a decade’s worth of stories, this too brings everything to a cosmic climax, the likes of which have not been attempted before. The largely successful effort clocks in at 90 minutes, making for the longest film yet in the 38 animated features from Warner Animation.
The film opens with John Constantine (Matt Ryan), now a full-fledged member of the League, in bed with Zatanna (Camilla Luddington), a moment of bliss before impending doom. The language and graphic violence definitely make this inappropriate for the youngest viewers so parents are forewarned.

Since we’re in a long wait between live-action Wonder Woman movies, it makes sense for Warner Animation to fill the gap. I just wish they filled it with something stronger than the just-released Wonder Woman: Bloodlines. The story is mostly about Diana and Vanessa Kapatelis with a hideous cabal of rogues attempting to plunder the technology of Themyscira.
It looks like it should fit in the animated continuity but it doesn’t really. We’re treated to a lengthy pre-credit sequence that recaps her origin and rushes things so quickly, that you blink and we’ve gone from Diana (Rosario Dawson) rescuing Steve Trevor (Jeffrey Donovan) to her leaving paradise for Man’s World and suddenly is allied with Etta Candy (Adrienne C. Moore) as they go to hang out with Dr. Julia Kapatelis (Nia Vandalos).

As 2019 begins winding down, the last entry into the line of DC Universe animated films to be released during this calendar year arrives in the form of Wonder Woman: Bloodlines. For those keeping track, the Amazon Warrior has appeared in many animated team-up flicks in this decade alone, but it’s worth pointing out how this is her first solo outing since 2009’s Wonder Woman. Much like that standalone, this direct-to-video gem is a triumph, and I hope it doesn’t take Warner Bros. long to green light a sequel.
Before I delve further into discussing the specifics of this picture, I can’t help thinking it was originally intended to coincide with Wonder Woman 1984‘s theatrical release. In fact, I’d previously wondered if Bloodlines would be delayed into mid-2020 in order to line up with the Gal Gadot-led feature since it’d been pushed. Well, that didn’t happen,...

To everyone of a certain age, Buffy the Vampire Slayer has a special place in their heart. Running from 1997 to 2003, for seven seasons Joss Whedon broke boundaries and genres, and if the show went off the rails a little in the last season the final episode redeemed it all somewhat. It was fun, made stars of Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, who’s character Angel got spun off in an equally good show, and was the darling of the geek scene. It was also something relatively unique in that it was a TV show that was really embraced by comic book fans, much like The X-Files, and Whedon made no secret of the fact he was a big comic book fan himself. Buffy, naturally, popped up in various comic book series from the early years, first at Dark Horse Comics,...

The last DC Animated movie for 2019 is Wonder Woman: Bloodlines. Here's what you need to know.
With the debut of the newest DC animated movie, Batman: Hush, comes a fresh batch of information about its successor. DC has finally given us a good look at Wonder Woman: Bloodlines, the last movie on the slate for 2019, and while much of the information released is not new, there is one extremely promising tidbit that is officially out in the world.
Rosario Dawson continues as Diana, a role she will be playing for the sixth time, and she is joined on the project by veteran comics and cartoon writer Mairghread Scott. Scott has written Diana before, on screen for Justice League Action and on the page as part of Wonder Woman's 75th anniversary special. You might recognize her name from a fun run on Batgirl or as one of the minds behind Windblade and Victarion,...

Steve Orlando's Martian Manhunter comic gets a thematic preview in DC's Nuclear Winter Special. Here's an exclusive first look...
DC has been having a lot of creative success with their seasonal specials. Usually they’re a way for fun one-off stories or quick-hit introductions for new talent. And periodically they use it as a way to seed ideas and themes for upcoming stories. That’s the case in DC's Nuclear Winter Special, where we get some stuff from relative newcomers like Amancay Nahuelpan or Dave Wielgosz (an editor on the Batman books who’s new to writing credits); unsurprisingly great work from Tom Taylor and Mairghread Scott; an Extremely Mark Russell framing sequence by perennial favorite Mark Russell; and a stealth intro to one of 2019’s most anticipated comics - a holiday get together between Superman One Million and Martian Manhunter from penciller Brad Walker and writer Steve Orlando,...

DC Comics is revamping Batgirl and she's got a new creative team behind it and it will come complete with a new costume design for her new adventures in Gotham City. That costume redesign comes from artist Sean Gordon Murphy and it is going to be revealed on the cover of Batgirl #26.
If you're familiar with the comics and the previous Batgirl costumes, this one was inspired by the character's outfit from Year One with the grey, yellow, and blue color scheme. Obviously, it has more of a modern stylish look to it, though, especially with the bat logo that will hook on to a backpack. The gloves, boots, and utility belt also have been tweeked, and she doesn't have a full cowl. The following comes from Polygon.
The series is being written by Mairghread Scott with art by Paul Pelletier and Elena Casagrande, and this is what Scott had...

Grass Kings #4
Written by Matt Kindt | Art by Tyler Jenkins | Published by Boom! Studios
Grass Kings is a series that is in a hurry to go nowhere. Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins built this book from the inside out. By crafting the characters and the world they live in first the tension that has arisen in this issue occurs organically. Motivations are clear and the stakes are steadily increasing. Simply put this is how you tell a story.
This issue deals with the fall out of Big Dan’s death and stuff is ready to go down. Now with an excuse to invade Grassland each group is readying their soliders for what is going to be a bloody affair. Not a great deal happens in this issue but the story is still moving forward. As cliché, as it sounds the Grasslands location, is developing into this full fleshed out character full of its own identity.

Toil and Trouble #5

Toil and Trouble #5 resumes again with the three sisters. This time, however, Riata and Smertae’s tensions explode into a ceremonial fight, while their sister is left to judge their event. The artwork from Kelly and Nichole Matthews remains amazing for the whole comic. The different magical transformations of Smertae and Riata highlight the height of their work. Toil and Trouble #4 continues to be strong in plot and artwork. It is a beautiful comic and really increases the conflict and strife between our three sisters. Writer Mairghread Scott dazzles and amazes with her well rounded characters and strong dialogue. The artwork of Kelly and Nichole Matthews is perfection in the aspects of fine attention to details and brilliant color schemes. Both come together to contribute well to the ongoing story of the Weird Sisters.
The story of Toil and Trouble #4 begins with the return of Macbeth to his home with his enchanted wife, Lady Macbeth, under the control of Riata. Meanwhile at the bottom of the sea, Smertae reflects for a moment of comfort, but she finds there can be no peace. Smertae makes her way back...

Toil and Trouble # 3 returns to the epic of the Weird Sisters and their conflict over who should be the next king. The comic improves vastly on the beginning two issues. The artwork by Kelly and Nichole Matthews continues to be well crafted and done with care for their choice of coloring. Most noticeable in their artistic choices is the role of color in the comic, they tend to select the right colors to make the comic’s mood fit the writing. Writer Mairghread Scott has really picked up the action in the comic as the flow of the story moves quickly and beautifully through character interactions and dialogue.
The comic returns to the three Weird sisters and their plots to make or break Macbeth as the king. The...

Toil and Trouble #2

Letters by Warren Montgomery

Toil and Trouble # 2 is part of a miniseries about the three witches from the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare. The comic artwork of Kelly and Nichole Matthews provides stunning visual images and a unique style. Writer Scott gives clear motivation to the Weird Sisters and their part in the tale of Macbeth as readers learn about why they started their prediction. It should be noted that the narrative boxes of the writing may seem a bit long, but do allow for the reader to get past exposition to the meat of the comic. Toil and Trouble # 2 inspires the reader to reflect on how much powers the Sisters Weird really have on fate.
The story begins with the Weird Sister in conflict with each other. The sisters Smertae and Riata...

Transformers Combiner Hunters #1

Before beginning this review, I would like to note that I will be breaking a reviewer’s rule by writing this in the first person. This needs to be done mainly so I can relate the fact that I have, regrettably, not been following Idw’s Transformer’s comics for quite some time. I say “regrettably” because after reading this superb one-shot by Mairghread Scott and Sara Pitre-Durocher I want to see what I’ve been missing. I also want to convey that I have been a huge Transformers fan since the introduction of the toys and original cartoon series back in the early 1980s and point out just how far this franchise has come. Now, on to the review.
While I am a huge fan of the Transformers franchise, I must say that Hasbro made...

Knowing the knowledge that lurks in the depths of the universe is a wonderful thing up until you realize that the physical result is becoming fully paralyzed. This happens to main character Beth Tezuka’s horse in the Bravest Warriors franchise, and the ramifications of this are explored in the Paralyzed Horse Giant book published by Boom! Studios. Inside are five short stories that explore a different facet of the Paralyzed Horse’s character, and the problems he faces due to his paralyzing knowledge of the universe.
