Live TV comes with certain risks, and Sunday’s Oscars snafu – in which “La La Land,” not “Moonlight,” was mistakenly named Best Picture at first – is a reminder of that. The occasional slip of the tongue or even pranks can lead a few buzzy, unpredictable moments, which may explain why live TV is experiencing a resurgence in popularity among TV programmers.
But there are times though when major snafus take over a live broadcast, causing embarrassment or controversy. It’s in those moments when the networks probably wished there was time for a do-over or edit.

Our American Idol “journey” has come to an end, but let us not weep for what’s been cancelled, let us instead go to iTunes and download the Season 15 winner’s new single. Hey, from a songwriting vantage point, it may not be “Home,” but it definitely ranks above “No Boundaries” and “Inside Your Heaven” — and we bought those, too. And if this show can produce one more bona fide radio/touring superstar, maybe the inevitable reboot will happen sooner than expected, no?

As the fathers of soon-to-be 4-year-old twins, my husband and I have a perpetual fascination with the “Stanford marshmallow experiment.” For the uninitiated, I’m talking about a psychological test from the late 1960s in which children were offered the choice of one fluffy, white confection or — if they were willing to sit unattended in a room with said snack for 15 minutes (and not devour it) — the reward of two tasty treats.

We're down to six on "American Idol" and the singers are doing double-duty on Wednesday (April 23) night. Alex, Jena, Caleb, Cj, Jessica and Sam will each sing one song dubbed "Country" and another song deemed "Rock." Two quick thoughts: 1) Dexter Roberts picked the wrong week to go home. If ever a theme would have helped ease Dexter along in his "Idol" genre, this would have been it. 2) For all of the Judges' Save thing, this week's theme seems to doom Sam Woolf, doesn't it? I continue to suspect that Jena, Caleb and Alex are in their own voting class. And of the remaining three singers, who can pretty much go home in any order as far as I'm concerned, two of them can be comfortably classed in a country-rock niche and the other one is Sam Woolf. Either we're about to see some impressive theme cheating from Sam, or else he's doomed before he begins.

I love American Idol, and therefore I can't stand when certain kickass Idol performances are forgotten years later. Here are eight you should keep close to your heart and voice box.
1. Von Smith, "You're All I Need" (season 8)
The ultra-talented Von Smith had the misfortune of auditioning for American Idol during season eight, the year when the Top 36 was slashed down to a Top 13 using a dubious voting system. It didn't help that folks like Adam Lambert and Alexis Grace (!) were endlessly touted before the Top 36, making their inclusion in the Top 13 almost inevitable compared to their little-seen competitors. Von's voice speaks -- nay, soars! -- for itself. So grand and crystal clear, and if I do say so myself, better than 99% of the vocalists we've heard on the show since.
2. Allison Iraheta and Cyndi Lauper, "Time After Time" (season 8)
I've always said that Idol's masterstroke is the season finale,...

NBC's The Voice, in my humble opinion, features the best unknown and relatively unknown singers on television. I don't say this just because I'm a former contestant (I'm also a former contestant on that other singing show, but that's a different blog for a different day). I say it because the talent this season is so undeniable. Even the hopefuls that are unfortunate enough not to make a team are way better than some of the finalists on other shows. And this season most of my favorites aren’t even 18. So here is my personal compilation of some of the incredible aural goodness I heard this week:

"American Idol" is here and Zap2it has been taking a stroll down memory lane to re-evaluate the previous nine seasons.
We're breaking it down into four categories: Best Performance, Worst Performance, Most Underrated Idol and most Overrated Idol. At the end, we will decide how the season stacks up against the rest, rating it as great, good, or not-so-good.
We've looked back at Season 1 (yay Kelly!), Season 2 (aww, Clay and Ruben!), the black hole that was Season 3, one of our favorite Top 2 in Season 4, and Soul Patrol-ed Season 5. We took a look back at beatboxin' Season 6 and the David vs. David finale of Season 7.
Season 8 contestants in order of elimination:
Jasmine Murray
Jorge Nunez
Alexis Grace
Michael Sarver
Megan Joy
Scott MacIntyre
Lil Rounds
Anoop Desai
Matt Giraud
Allison Iraheta
Danny Gokey
Adam Lambert
Kris Allen (winner)

Opinions have been largely negative surrounding the ninth season of Fox's hit singing competition show -- but is this really the worst season in "American Idol" history? We don't think so.
We think this is more a case of the collective "Idol" viewing audience having some short-term memory loss. Sure, in comparison to the David vs. David showdown of two years ago and the spectacle that was Adam Lambert coupled with whiskey-voiced Allison Iraheta and cutie-pie Kris Allen, Season 9 seemed a little boring.
But let's not forget the seasons prior to seven and eight. Do you even remember the black hole that was Season 3?
Season 9's Paige Miles is arguably the best 11th-place finisher ever, with the possible exception of Alexis Grace. Unfortunately for Paige, the week she was eliminated she was very obviously sick and had had no exposure prior to the Top 24, thus no fan base to get her through the rough patch.

It was a shocking night on the American Idol results show yesterday. Firstly ‘Teflon’ Tim Urban didn’t even land in the bottom three, but Aaron Kelly, Andrew Garcia and Michael Lynche did.
Ryan Seacrest revealed that Michael had received the least public votes and therefore had just one more chance to sing. A steely-looking Lynche then performed “This Woman’s Work” with gusto as his wife and friends cried in the crowd.
In another shock twist, the judges decided to use their one save card of the season and opted to keep Big Mike on the show.
“The frustrating thing is, we all wish you had done something like that yesterday,” Simon Cowell told him. “This was unanimous, if that’s any comfort.”
“We’ve decided we’re going to see you next week.”
The crowd went wild, Lynche’s wife looked ecstatic and Big Mike lives to sing another day.

With Lilly Scott, Alex Lambert and Katelyn Epperly sent home, season nine lost three of its most interesting contestants.

After an embarrassingly shaky start to the "American Idol" live shows late last month, many of the hopefuls — from Crystal Bowersox to Casey James to Lilly Scott — recovered to the point where we were no longer ready to declare season nine the worst in the show's history.
And then came Thursday night's results show. Standouts Scott, Alex Lambert and Katelyn Epperly were sent home, while sooo-not-ready-for-prime-time crooners Katie Stevens, Paige Miles and Tim Urban made the cut. That sound you hear? America erasing their DVR season passes of "Idol." Which raises the question: Is this season's newly announced top 12 the weakest we've ever seen?

With the season premiere of “American Idol” just days away (can you stand it?) we thought it’d be fun to catch up with the contestants that captivated your hearts — and your texting fingers — last season. We all know what’s happened to winner Kris Allen and runner-up Adam Lambert, but what about Lil Rounds? Or Megan Joy? We’ve been keeping tabs on all 13 contestants!

After his win over heavily-favored Adam, Kris’ debut single, “No Boundaries,” was released on May 20, 2009 on iTunes, alongside Adam’s version. Kris’ version of the song debuted at No. 11 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for the week of May 29. Kris’ self-titled album was released on Nov. 17, 2009. "American Idol" announced Tuesday that it's reverting back to a Top 24, with 12 men competing against each other and 12 women competing against each other. Is this a good thing?
We say yes. A resounding yes, for several reasons: gender balance, higher quality and more exposure before Top 12 starts.
Gender Balance
We love guys, nothing against 'em. But last year's "American Idol" Top 12 was 8 men and 4 women. We attribute this to the fact that the majority of people who vote (vote, not watch) on "American Idol" are female and they may be swayed by a cute guy who isn't actually one of the best vocalists. Then what happens is a female (usually a quirky girl, a la Jesse Langseth or Mishavonna Henson) gets left out who maybe could have made the Top 12 in lieu of a Scott McIntyre or Jorge Nunez, who maybe should not have.
Higher Quality

Year-end Nielsen recaps in the late '00s feel like a week-two American Idol results show: predictable, obligatory, cynical even without the commentary (or the jilted Alexis Grace). This year the rankings number the usual suspects and crown the same "regularly scheduled program" champ as in 2008. However, one new entry to the list makes middle-aged lawyering seem as watchable as Bruno Tonioli's big, stupid screaming.

“American Idol” veterans are making the transition from amateur sensations to paid professionals. Champ Kris Allen, runner-up Adam Lambert and fourth-place finisher Allison Iraheta have all signed record deals with 19 Recordings. So, which contestant from the show’s eighth season will be the next to ink a recording contract? Which highly ranked singer will get left out in the cold? Let’s discuss.
Who’s Next?
Those who play it safe probably have their finger on Danny Gokey. With his velvety singing voice and heartstring-tugging backstory, he was among the front-runners all season. Gokes was never in the bottom three until he got booted off the week before the finals. But I’m not convinced about his viability as a commercial recording artist. A recent conversation I had with producer Howard Benson (who has worked with Kelly Clarkson and Chris Daughtry) only solidified my thinking that Danny...

Last night American Idol finalists Kris Allen and Adam Lambert took the stage for the last time, joined by former contestants and big stars alike. Nicole Richie enjoyed her dad's duet with Danny Gokey with Joel and her little sister Sophia, while Victoria and Romeo Beckham took seats in the audience as well. As promised, the night was full of fun surprises from Kara's surprise sing along (and smokin' hot bikini body - who knew?) to an awesome rendition of "We Are the Champions" featuring Queen. Other favorites were Fergie getting down with the Black Eyed Peas and Allison singing "Time After Time" with Cyndi Lauper - what was your favorite moment? Of course, the biggest surprise of the night may have been Kris's big win, and no one looked more shocked than the new idol himself. Whether or not you agree with the results, both Adam and Kris proved...

Kris Allen scored a stunning, dark-horse victory over Adam Lambert on the star-studded season finale of "American Idol" Wednesday night. Read on for the new champ's shocked reaction and the full recap! When host Ryan Seacrest revealed that the nearly one-hundred million votes cast favored Kris, the overjoyed 23-year-old from Arkansas said, "It feels good, man, but Adam deserved this. … I don't know what to feel right now, but this is crazy!" "I thought you were both brilliant, unusually incredibly nice people," Simon Cowell told the top two shortly before the result was announced, "and I think the both of you should be very proud of what you achieved last night. And the future's all yours." The shocking finale featured a host of duets between star musicians and this season's "Idol" champ and hopefuls. Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor backed Adam and Kris on "We Are the Champions.

The time has come to appoint the new winner of "American Idol". Slightly less than 100 million votes were cast for both Adam Lambert and Kris Allen, and according to DialIdol.com, only a few votes separated the two that it is difficult to foresee who will be the winner.
The result show on Wednesday, May 13 was opened with Ryan Seacrest welcoming back Adam and Kris on the stage. Right after that, a video about the judges was played before the Top 13, all in white outfits, performed Pink's "So What". As previously reported, the show was to be visited by many guest performers and the first to take the stage was last season's "Idol" champion, David Cook. He sang "Permanent" that was dedicated to his late brother and can be purchased with benefits going to cancer research.

Hi guys - sorry I’m late. I was busy talking to Paula Abdul on the red carpet. Seriously. More on that later…
But for now, it’s time to live-blog the “American Idol” finale! Yay!
8:01 pm - Seacrest is introducing the judges with fun little montage that reminds us why they’re the worst judges on television. Also, Randy Jackson borrowed a bow-tie from (Mrs.) J. Alexander on “America’s Next Top Model.”
8:06 pm - What’s the worst part about being an “Idol” finalist? Having to sing songs about mountains and hurricanes or being forced to wear all white on the finale? At least Adam’s wearing space boots.
8:06 pm - Mikalah Gordon is in Conway, Arkansas. This is the first time they’ve seen a real live drag queen. It’s a night of firsts!!
8:07 pm - Carly Smithson is in San Diego.

After a historic tally of nearly 100 million votes, the shy 23-year-old singer from Conway, Arkansas, pulled off one of the most surprising wins in the show's nearly decade-long history by taking the crown from the theatrical season-long front-runner, Adam Lambert.

9:00 p.m. That's a mighty cheesy opening segment, "Idol" producers. With the spinning back-lit heads, fast cutting and gauzy lenses? One more Idol falls out, as the top nine for the eight season of "American Idol" is announced. Michael Sarver, the oil rig roughneck that went through the Top 36 together with also-eliminated Alexis Grace, has to swallow the bitter pill of not getting enough votes to make him stay. He, however, has been included in the Top 10 and will tour with the rest after the show wraps up later this year.
Sarver was in the bottom three along with two other guys, Matt Giraud and Scott McIntyre. While 36 million votes were cast on the Motown night when he belted out "Ain't Too Proud to Beg", he received the lowest of the three. Simon Cowell, additionally refused to use his judge power to save the father of two in the competition. "Michael, you're going home. Sorry," Cowell said.
In the performance night, indeed, Michael received harsh criticism from the four judges.

Alexis Grace, in all of her 4-foot-11, 98-lb. glory, came by the TVGuide.com offices this week to reflect on her run on American Idol, which many believe ended too soon.
We presented Alexis with the TVGuide.com poll in which 89 percent of the voters agree that a singer lobbying for the Judges' Save should be able to encore any past performance, rather than their most recent one. Impressed by the consensus, Alexis says, "It makes a strong point ... [though] there are arguments to be made for both sides."
In this video sit-down, Alexis also touches on these topics:
• Why she is particularly bummed about not making the cut for Idol's summer tour.
• Her plan to go "Dancing" during Motown week.
• Her favorite song by Pink, whom she has called her "dream duet."
• Did she really have 30 pairs of shoes with her at the Idol mansion?!
• And, of course, her future plans.

Shock was served up on America Idol this past Thursday when Tennessee hopeful Alexis Grace was abruptly sent packing. It was country week and the southern sweetie turned to Dolly Parton's "Jolene" to help her sail into the Top 10. However the wind was blown out of her sail when she was surprisingly sent home shy of the summer tour. The talented singer, the graceful performer and the adoring mother reached the hearts of millions when she sang and many are sad to see her depart Idol. PopStar spoke with the fallen Idol and she has a special message to share with all her fans. When we first met the short haired blondie that could belt out Aretha Franklin we knew that she would make it to the finals of Idol. When the judges advised her to "dirty it up" during the audtions Aleixs listened and threw some spunky pink highlihgts in her hair.

Dolly Parton's "Jolene" was Alexis Grace's waterloo on Wednesday night's "American Idol" results show. And she suspected that might be the case, she tells "The Insider." "The nerves got the best of me," she says. "You can't let that happen when you are on the show." Alexis' plans for the future are to return to Memphis and spend some time with her family -- and then continue her pursuit of a recording contract. "I am excited to go be a mommy again," she says.
