With Season 17 of “American Idol” coming to a close on May 19 with Alejandro Aranda, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg as the final three, it has a good chance of being considered to be among one of the best seasons ever. But is it The best? That is yet to be determined. Certainly all three contestants have grown as vocalists and entertainers each and every week, especially on Sunday’s second-to-last show. But it is a little too early to see how No. 17 stacks ups with these four stellar seasons from the past.
America per saymay not have voted in our “best-ever” poll, but Gold Derby readers did — and 39% chose Season 8 when Kris Allen with his folky renditions of pop tunes somehow beat the versatile showman Adam Lambert. After a so-so revival last year when ABC took over “American Idol,” most fans are in agreement that the talent on display on Season 17 is a giant leap for singing kind. The show overall seems to be more entertaining. Yes, judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan are never going to be as scathingly funny as Simon Cowell in his snide heyday. But their personalities and musical knowledge complement each other and all three seem quite genuine in their quest to help the contestants to up their games.
Very early in this current edition of the show, the words “best season ever” were uttered. It is all subjective, of course, but with just one more episode and the three-hour finale left, No. 17 could go down in “Idol’ ‘history talent-wise once a winner is crowned. Of course, factoring into that assessment will be the winner’s post-show success as well.

A group of 10 former American Idol contestants — including Season 5′s tantrum-throwing Brittenum twins and Season 2′s Corey Clark (best remembered for claiming he had an affair with judge Paula Abdul) — are suing the show and producer Fremantle Media for a whopping $25 million apiece, claiming they were booted from the competition due to racism. The suit was first reported by TMZ.
In addition to Clark (pictured) and Terrell and Derrell Brittenum, the contestants involved in the suit include Season 2′s Jaered Andrews and Jacob John Smalley, Season 3′s Donnie Williams, Season 6′s Thomas Daniels and Akron Watson, Season 8′s Ju’Not...

Ten more dames. Ten more billiards lounge renditions of songs that your great-grandmother can safely die to. And about four or five that ruled. Let's rank 'em!
10. Zoanette Johnson, Tina Tuner's "What's Love Got to Do With It?"
Well, here's the good news: Now Lil Rounds can claim her rendition of "What's Love Got to Do With It?" from season eight isn't the single worst version in Idol history. Zoanette is truly a mesmerizing, popcorn-worthy spectacle deserving of P.T. Barnum's time, but you knew she'd fall apart the minute actual singing was required of her. Mariah can claim that her take on "The Circle of Life" worked because of "her backstory" (uh, in Liberia? That's why Zoanette's a natural at crooning about lion birth?), but it was really thanks to the instrumentation's campy grandeur, which tonally matched Zoanette's Wendy Williams-meets-Pagliacci hissy-fit theater. I appreciate that she thrusted about...

NBC's The Voice, in my humble opinion, features the best unknown and relatively unknown singers on television. I don't say this just because I'm a former contestant (I'm also a former contestant on that other singing show, but that's a different blog for a different day). I say it because the talent this season is so undeniable. Even the hopefuls that are unfortunate enough not to make a team are way better than some of the finalists on other shows. And this season most of my favorites aren’t even 18. So here is my personal compilation of some of the incredible aural goodness I heard this week:

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

Last month, while interviewing executive producer Nigel Lythgoe for a story about possible changes to American Idol for its upcoming eleventh season, I proposed the idea that the show should introduce a list of 11 songs that would be banned from the live performance rounds on the grounds that they’ve been done to death in previous seasons. Lythgoe’s response caught me off guard: “Well, Mike, if you want to write down and send me 11 songs that you don’t want to hear again, I will put them through to the committee.”
Well, sir, you don’t have to ask me twice!

The confetti’s been swept up. The summer tour dates have been announced. And Scotty McCreery’s “I Love You This Big” is headed for a date with country radio. All of which is another way of saying that American Idol‘s 11th season is a mere seven months away.
With that in mind, I sat down and hammered out a list of 10 changes I’d make to the Idol machine to keep it humming along in high-rated, entertaining fashion. Check out my list of proposed tweaks, then hit the comments and suggest your own!

The role call of seventh-place finishers on American Idol ranges from the back-to-back eyes-wide-open nightmares of Sanjaya Malakar and Kristy Lee Cook in Seasons 6 and 7 to the remarkable success story of Season 3 Wild Card Jennifer Hudson, who overcame the Pepto-Bismol Dress From Hell to scale Oscar- and Grammy-winning heights. In between those two extremes, though, the not-so-lucky No. 7 spot has been occupied by singers who showed early promise, then flamed out (Anwar Robinson, Kimberly Caldwell) and those whose “package artist” good looks carried them further than their vocal abilities might’ve otherwise suggested (Ryan Starr, Tim Urban, Ace Young). (Nope,...

Two contestants on American Idol will be sent home tonight. The judges save is no longer in play. The stress could not be more intense. Why am I typing like Ryan Seacrest talks? Why do we do anything in this world?
While you ponder that existential question, a brief tour of recent Idol history: When Matt Giraud was saved during Top 7 week in Season 8, wild card contestant Anoop Desai and early producer favorite/frontrunner Lil Rounds were sent home the next week. When Michael Lynche was saved during Top 9 week in Season 9, very early producer favorites/frontrunners Andrew Garcia and...

This was it — the night American Idol fans have been waiting for. That is, if you could get past the fact that majority of the 11 songs performed had been covered by previous contestants. And overlook the weird, revisionist-history editing of several finalists’ introductory packages. And, of course, avoid smashing your television in rage over the appalling Gordon Ramsay committing the worst act of douchery in 10 seasons of Idol.
But, hey, just like we readily accept that Steven Tyler wears sheer, sparkly, leopard-print blouses from Forever 21, and that Jennifer Lopez looks beautiful even in blue eyeshadow, we also have to accept...

Some things in life are certainties: Steven Tyler’s penchant for profanity. Jennifer Lopez’s ability to add sparkle to just about anything (her eyelids, a pair of mom shorts, the Glinda-like bubble that perpetually surrounds her). And the way that, despite Ryan Seacrest’s best efforts, American Idol‘s “Holding Rooms of Doom” episodes are never really all that suspenseful.

"American Idol" is here and Zap2it has been taking a stroll down memory lane to re-evaluate the previous nine seasons.
We're breaking it down into four categories: Best Performance, Worst Performance, Most Underrated Idol and most Overrated Idol. At the end, we will decide how the season stacks up against the rest, rating it as great, good, or not-so-good.
We've looked back at Season 1 (yay Kelly!), Season 2 (aww, Clay and Ruben!), the black hole that was Season 3, one of our favorite Top 2 in Season 4, and Soul Patrol-ed Season 5. We took a look back at beatboxin' Season 6 and the David vs. David finale of Season 7.
Season 8 contestants in order of elimination:
Jasmine Murray
Jorge Nunez
Alexis Grace
Michael Sarver
Megan Joy
Scott MacIntyre
Lil Rounds
Anoop Desai
Matt Giraud
Allison Iraheta
Danny Gokey
Adam Lambert
Kris Allen (winner)

Oh, Kara. Kara, Kara, Kara. (Sorry, turned on my Randy Jackson switch right there.) Last night, you announced via a statement from Fox that you will not be returning to the tenth season of American Idol. And, sweetie, I gotta tell ya, we’re going to miss you.
I know: I’m a little shocked to have written that statement myself. Because here at PopWatch HQ, we have long been critical of the fourth judge, who was added back in season 8. We chided her for her tendency to favor commercialism over true talent when it came to the show’s contestants.

Elton John took to the American Idol stage last night for the Idol Gives Back special and gave a truly inspirational performance of his classic track ‘Your Song.’
We loved the huge red grand piano he used and can’t hear this song without remembering that it was Elton’s pal Princess Diana’s favourite song….in fact at one point he even considered singing it at her funeral instead of ‘Candle In The Wind.’
Elton, whose last major television performance was a duet with Lady GaGa during the Grammys in February, gave his performance on behalf of ‘The Elton John Aids Foundation’ and Idol Gives Back bosses reported donations of more than $140 million (£87.5 million) in 2010 prior to the televised charity show.

Tim Urban took to the American Idol stage last night to perform the classic Lennon/McCartney track ‘All My Lovin.’ Though there was no celebrity mentor this week, Sir Paul McCartney did record a video message wishing all the contestants good luck.
We were expecting Tim to suck a bit tonight and thought he would be leaving this week for sure, but the 20 year old Texas boy actually gave a decent performance and rocked the track up a little. We were pleasantly surprised and so apparently were the judging panel!
Judges Comments:
Randy Jackson said it was a good “Tim performance” adding that he liked his new Beatles hairdo.
Ellen DeGeneres said it was her second favourite performance of Tim’s after ‘Hallelujah’
Kara DioGuardi said she liked the fun he ahd with the song and also the fact that he is taking some of their past comments on song choice seriously.

On tonight’s Over The Rainbow, former page three girl Amy Diamond chose to sing Fergie’s Big Girls Don’t Cry. It wasn’t a perfect vocal and we think that her backing vocals may have been more prominent than the rest. We don’t see Amy as Dorothy and can’t help thinking that she’s only on the show to generate some headlines!
Danielle Hope was up next (check out the video below) and sang Daniel Merriweather’s Red. It’s an excellent power ballad and though Danielle may have oversang it a tiny bit, we did enjoy her performance.
Judges Comments:
Shiela: Amy is a fantastic performer. Very attractive. What worries me is that Dorothy is a girl who looks at things straight in the eye. She never uses guile, she never uses girliness. If she did, the relationship with the Wizard and the three men...

Former American Idol winner Ruben Studdard returned to the show last night and gave an amazing performance of “Don’t Make ‘Em Like U No More”.

She’s one of the youngest Idol contestants this year, but Katie Stevens takes on Fergie’s Big Girls Don’t Cry. And fails.
Look, here’s the thing. It’s a Fergie song. Therefore, it’s not that difficult to sing. But Katie is barely in tune throughout the song. The performance is middling, but the vocals are just pathetic at this stage of the competition. I know she’s young, and she’s got a lot to learn, but that’s the point: she’s outgunned by the older contestants. A lot of the younger ones are this year.
To muscle in on the metaphorical madness – it’s like watching Bambi going up against a graceful full-grown doe (deer-speak for Katie versus Crystal Bowersox). Katie doesn’t stand a chance. To make matters worse, she’s caught in a confusing genre war between Kara and Simon. Kara wants...

Annop Desai made it to the seventh week on last year’s American Idol and the 23 year old is now preparing to release his debut album.
The record titled “All is Fair” will hit the shelves on May 4 and the song above “My Name” will be his first single.
“It’s a pop record, but definitely influenced by a Bollywood feel,” Desai told People.
“‘My Name’ has a double meaning. On one hand, it’s a response to kids that used to make fun of my name when I was little. I wanted my first contribution to be something that said, ‘Hey, my name is now cool, not something to be ashamed of.’”
“It’s also about false bravado. Each song on the All is Fair album describes a mindset or a time in my life. ‘My Name’ is about going to a club and trying to act like a big deal.

Former American Idol finalist Jason Castro’s has performed “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “That’s What I’m Here For” for the wedding of “Bachelor” stars Jason Mesnick and Molly Malaney.
We love the reality TV crossover here and think that Jason showcased his beautiful and dulcet tones brilliantly. The second song “That’s What I’m Here For” is a new single from Jason Castro’s self-titled album, which will be released on April 13.

20 year old Lilly Scott gave possibly the best performance of the night on yesterday’s American Idol live show.
The girl from Colorado sang ‘A Change is Gonna Come,’ by Sam Cooke and the judges seemed to be feeling her choice. We like Lilly’s uniqueness and the fact that she’s not really comparable to anyone else who has competed on the show to date.
Randy and Ellen both told Lilly that it was their favorite performance of the night, Kara DioGuardi said that she was “riveted” and couldn’t wait to see what she would do next. Simon Cowell thought it was good, but wasn’t as crazy about Lilly’s performance as the others. He added that she oversang parts and she wasn’t as good as Crystal.

Each time we hear Joe Munoz’s name we have to google him and try to recall who on earth he is. He is one of the more forgettable contestants in this years final 24 and unless he changes that soon, he could find himself in trouble very soon.
On last night’s live show Joe sang Jason Mraz’s “You and I Both” and though his vocals were good, certainly better than a few singers who preceeded him, they weren’t enough to make him stand out.
Kara DioGuardi thought that ” in terms of the singing, I think you were the best. You were the most consistent in there.” But Simon made a fair point when he kind of “agreed” but said that in 10 seconds people were going to forget the performance.

Season-nine semifinalists' rocky live debut has 'Idol' experts and fans concerned.

The early semifinal rounds of "American Idol" are always difficult. You are bound to have some early hopefuls falling victim to first-time-on-tv jitters, a few dark horses soaring before an eventual crash and a handful of singers proving they were lucky to have gotten there in the first place.
But after the first two nights of mostly panned performances, veteran "Idol" watchers woke up Thursday (February 25) wondering, "Is this the worst top 24 ever?"
The answer is easy for Dave Della Terza, webmaster of the long-running "Idol"-bashing blog VoteForTheWorst.com, which encourages "Idol" watchers to purposely stuff the box with votes for the weakest contestants. "This truly is the worst top 24 in 'American Idol' history," Della Terza said. "If you notice, the only contestant in the entire top...

I don’t actually recall Lilly Scott from any of the American Idol audition shows, yet she blew my socks off on tonight’s Hollywood week show.
Scott works at a sandwich shop and auditioned in Denver and has coincidentally been named on the final 24 spoilers list.
She impressed the judges with her sultry yet quirky version of ‘Lullaby of Birdland’ a tune made famous by Ella Fitzgerald and breezed through to the next round.
“Well, Lilly, everything about you is refreshing,” remarked Kara DioGuardi after Lilly sang. “I really like you. You’re unique. You did your own thing. Very good.”

Alums Megan Joy and Nikki McKibbin note the many benefits 'Idol' stardom offers young moms and dads.

This year's "American Idol" audition rounds presented a veritable baby boom of young parents aiming for their shot at stardom, often with a newborn or adorable moppet on their hip or clutching too-cute-for-words crayon pictures for the judges.
From the hyper-focused Andrew Garcia, himself the son of former Los Angeles gangbangers, who is in search of a better life for his own young boy, to hulking personal trainer and expectant father Michael Lynche, who might have already washed out because his father allegedly blabbed about his Hollywood experience to a local Florida paper, moms and dads were featured in nearly every audition episode for season nine.

We heard about Michael Lynche weeks before his audition aired on last night’s American Idol. He was the guy that reportedly made it through to American Idol’s final 24 and was then dropped when his father blabbed to a local newspaper.
“Big Mike” showed up for his initial audition with his expectant wife and news that they are having a baby girl.
The 26-year-old personal trainer from Astoria, NY sang “Unchained Melody” for the judges and had Kara and guest judge Kristin Chenoweth swooning over his performance.
“It’s kinda like a singing teddy bear,” Kara said, before the judges sent him through to Hollywood.
Randy Jackson added: “You can definitely sing.”
Big Mike was tackled to the ground by his family, and even Ryan Seacrest, in a big group hug, when he came out of the audition holding the magic ticket. It’s a pity he won’t get to go further.

We're headed into the final week of American Idol auditions -- how quickly they've sped by, yet how tedious they've gotten, no? -- but before we reconnect with Victoria Beckham in Denver tonight, let's take the temperature of where things stand with the Golden Ticket-getters from Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, Orlando, Los Angeles, and Dallas. Check out my Top 20 countdown (hotlinks to all auditions included for those of you with faulty memories/lives outside the Idolverse), then vote for your favorite in the poll (after the jump). And if you're not already doin' it (and doin' it well), follow me on Twitter @EWMichaelSlezak.

Todrick Hall auditioned for American Idol with an original song, a ploy that almost never works. Other than Larry Platt’s ‘Pants On The Ground’, we can’t think of another original song that actually impressed the AI judges until tonight.
He’s a genuine singer, perhaps the best of the season so far and already with Broadway experience. He has previously performed in The Color Purple’ alongside former AI star Fantasia Barrino.
Randy Jackson said, “Dude, I think you’re one of the best I’ve seen in season 9.”
Guest judge Joe Jonas said that Todrick had “star power,” but Simon Cowell wasn’t raving, calling it a “cutesy” audition and adding “Voice-wise, I’m not jumping out of my chair.”

Michael Lynche has reportedly been cut from the final 24 American Idol contestants, after his dad gave an interview to a local newspaper.
Michael made it through the Orlando round of auditions and on past the Hollywood stage, but his dad told The St. Petersburg Times, that he had made the top 24, violating AI rules.
If Lynche’s disqualification is true, it is the second year running that a finalist has been cut from the lineup. Last year, Joanna Pacitti, was sent off after making the top 36 when producers said it had been determined that she “is ineligible to continue in the competition.” She was then replaced by Felicia Barton.

Bedazzled Theo Glinton may not have been the worst singer of the American Idol auditions tonight, but he certainly was the worst dressed. Theo rolled up for his audition in a floor-length scarf, glitter makeup and mirrors stuck to his face.
He shouted Pat Benatar’s “Heartbreaker,” at the judges and seemed shocked to get four nos from the panel.
“You screamed the song at us … [and] when you walk in [dressed] like like that, I mentally said no,” Simon Cowell said.

It looks like Simon Cowell might have been right. He said General Larry Platt’s self penned song ‘Pants On The Ground’ had the potential to be a big hit and already stars like Neil Young have started covering it!
Ok so it isn’t really Neil, it’s actually American talk show host Jimmy Fallon pretending to be the famed folk singer, taking on what will no doubt become a American Idol classic. However, the funny thing is that it could totally a Neil Young track off one of hid more obscure albums!

16-year-old school girl Maddy Curtis showed up in the American Idol Boston auditions and her ’story’ is that she has four brothers with down syndrome. I don’t know why that impacts on her singing, but it must have some relevance because we saw more of Maddy’s homelife than of her performance on tonight’s AI show.
Maddy performed Halleluiah by Leonard Cohen for the judges and got four yeses. We didn’t think she was all that, in fact we think we can sing better than her but Simon knows best!
Judge Randy Jackson said he didn’t think it was going to be that good but concluded: “I was wondering how this was going to be, but I actually really liked you. Very controlling. When you went to the high note and came back down and you stayed in key, I was like, ‘Yeah!”
Simon agreed saying: “I like Maddy,...

Kris Allen
After his win over heavily-favored Adam, Kris’ debut single, “No Boundaries,” was released on May 20, 2009 on iTunes, alongside Adam’s version. Kris’ version of the song debuted at No. 11 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for the week of May 29. Kris’ self-titled album was released on Nov. 17, 2009. Yes, that's the exact question I posed to Lil Rounds, the American Idol season 8 finalist who's been closing her current tour set with a cover of Beyoncé's iconic "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." Press play below to hear Lil answer (after she stops giggling, of course) and to find out about the perils of belting while dancing, the ease of singing without fear of Simon Cowell, and the joys of shoe-bedazzling. (In other news, you all know this means there will be an Anoop Desai Idolatry interview comin' atcha in about 24 hours, yes? And also: Follow me on Twitter @EWMichaelSlezak! Fun!)...

For those of you wondering if I scored any Danny Gokey scoop at the American Idols Live tour stop in Albany, NY last week -- aside from our "why do you like me so much?" exchange -- the answer is most indubitably "yes!" Danny says he'll be sharing some good news with his fans before month's end, and that despite the R&B-Latin-country spread of his current tour set, he's settled on a genre for his debut disc. Press play below to find out which musical path he's taking, whether or not he's planning to write his own music, and what he explains are his "two ways of singing." And keep your eyes peeled for Bonus Rocker and Bonus Giraud sightings! Oh, and a few housekeeping notes. Keep checking back this week at PopWatch for additional interview footage starring Lil Rounds and Anoooooooop Desai! Sadly, no Allison or Adam interviews...

Lil Rounds has a spark about her and once it was lit nothing could stop the fire that will drive her to greatness. Before Idol, her life was turned upside down after a tornado terrorized her home, making it beyond unlivable, forcing her and her family into a hotel. Overcoming that adversity made Lil Rounds stronger and gave her the will to achieve great things. Shortly after the terrible tornado, Lil Rounds began to rebuild her life; first stop was pursuing her dream and passion to become an entertainer. Lil Rounds had a drive that was undeniable each week on American Idol and viewers fell in love with her warm spirit, her gift for R&B, and her uncanny ability to connect with the audiences and camera. Lil Rounds' strength and determination paired with her talent catapulted her into the Top Ten and landed her on the American Idol summer tour.

Like Denise Richards' E! reality series, the relationship between Idolatry and Danny Gokey is complicated. But when we caught up with American Idol's season 8 second runner-up during the Idols Live tour stop in Albany, NY, Danny took control of the interview for a hot minute to ask me some tough questions of his own, and to give a shout-out to his nemesis, Idolatry co-host Kristen Baldwin. Press play below to hear what he had to say, click here to see our chat with Kris Allen (he's got new collaborators!), and stay tuned in the days ahead for more Albany interviews with Mr. Gokey (he's picking a genre!), Matt Giraud (he's been writing!), Megan Joy (she's not just just pursuing singing, folks!), Lil Rounds (she's a bedazzler!), and of course, Anoop Desai (he's always on our minds)! (Also, special word of warning to Kradison fans: Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta...
