BBC One’s Bloodlands began filming its second series recently, having been confirmed for renewal last year. The police procedural TV drama was created by Chris Brandon, who previously worked on shows like Endeavour and Red Rock. The TV show earned rave reviews from critics, with NPR writing: “If Bloodlands initially strikes you as being a tad ponderous and formulaic, do stick around. The action starts to clip along, with nifty cinematography and deft use of the locations around the lovely Strangford Lough.” Aside from its intriguing storyline and masterful directing, Bloodlands is brought to life by the wonderful performances of its cast members. Among the detective dramas and high-stakes thrillers due to arrive on British television in the next year or so, there are a clutch of sci-fi, supernatural and horror shows also coming our way. April saw the release of Sky One original Intergalactic – the story of a wrongly imprisoned galactic pilot who breaks out of space jail with a gang of other high-security female prisoners – and Netflix has ordered fantasy novel adaptations Half Bad, Cuckoo Song, Lockwood & Co. and The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle – respectively, tales of witches, supernatural pacts, ghost-hunters, and a woman who jumps between bodies in her quest to solve a murder mystery. Coming to terrestrial TV, there’s Life After Life and The Three, stories about living multiple versions of the same life, and the miraculous child survivors of a mysterious plane crash.
On top of that, there’s plenty of true crime, thrillers, a new...

Warning: contains spoilers for Line of Duty series 6 episode 5
The pause button really came into its own in this week’s Line of Duty instalment, which was even more packed than usual with references to the past. It saw the return of Patrick Fairbank, and the new arrival of a potential ‘H’ candidate played by Jimmy Nesbitt, plus a cliffhanger that threatened the end of Di Kate Fleming (see below for more on that). On top of all that, it turned out that Jo Davidson being related to Tommy Hunter wasn’t the worst of her DNA revelations; her family history is a sad one indeed. After reading our weekly episode review, dig in to the theories and questions below.
What do “runs of homozygosity” mean for Jo Davidson’s DNA?
That she’s a product of incest. The forensic results show that Jo inherited the same DNA sequence for...

Fans of James Nesbitt can soon enjoy a heavily-accented dose of the stone-faced Northern Irish actor, as he leads a gripping four-part Irish crime thriller from executive producer Jed Mercurio, the force behind police thrillers “Line of Duty” and “Bodyguard.” Written by Chris Brandon (“Red Rock), who cites “True Detective” and “The Killing” as inspiration, “Bloodlands” follows a veteran detective who must plumb his own dark past to try and solve a cold case. It will premiere this spring on Acorn TV.
Here’s more from Acorn TV’s official synopsis: “When an expensive car containing a suicide note — but no body — is pulled from the sea, veteran Northern Ireland police detective Tom Brannick (Nesbitt) instantly sees the connection to an infamous cold case that holds enormous personal significance for him — a notorious and long-buried series of mysterious disappearances. ‘Bloodlands’ follows Tom Brannick’s obsessive campaign to identify and unmask...

The Bloodlands trailer first gives us police boats crossing a desolate loch, and the timbrous tones of James Nesbitt recapping a decades-old case about an assassin codenamed Goliath. Then comes the legend: “From the Executive Producer of Bodyguard and Line of Duty.” The new four-part BBC crime drama is the first from Hat Trick Mercurio, the new production company of Bodyguard and Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio, the biggest name in UK TV thrillers and a connection well worth advertising.
A connection, in fact, you’d be mad not to advertise. Zig-zagging political thriller Bodyguard was a gargantuan hit, and here in the UK, Line of Duty is more popular than sunshine. Anyone launching a new crime drama and not trying to get people to call it ‘the next Line of Duty’ wouldn’t be doing their job.
There are other sound reasons to draw the link: like Line of Duty,...

Exclusive: ITV is developing a miniseries on Ian Paterson, the infamous British surgeon who is serving a 20-year prison sentence after performing unnecessary and body-altering operations on more than 1,000 patients over a period of 14 years.
Deadline can reveal that ITV is working on the three-part series with Hat Trick Mercurio Television, the production outfit co-owned by Bodyguard creator Jed Mercurio and Hat Trick Productions, the Jimmy Mulville-run indie behind Matt LeBlanc’s Golden Globe-winning Episodes.
Hat Trick Mercurio is in the process of attaching a writer to the project, which will tell an Erin Brockovich-style story of Paterson’s atrocities through the eyes of Debbie Douglas, a woman who helped run victims’ support group Breast Friends after being left “mutilated” by the surgeon.
Douglas and her fellow Breast Friends members initially celebrated the charismatic Paterson, but ultimately turned into his most implacable opponents as they helped uncover his litany of botched operations.
