Accomplished jazz musician Kamasi Washington has confirmed his new album, Fearless Movement, set for release on May 3rd.
Fearless Movement is Kamasi Washington’s first album in six years, and the saxophonist refers to the record as his “dance album”: “It’s not literal,” Washington clarifies in a statement, “Dance is movement and expression, and in a way it’s the same thing as music —expressing your spirit through your body. That’s what this album is pushing.”
Another significant theme of Fearless Movement is new fatherhood, inspired by Washington’s experience having his first child several years ago. In addition to his daughter appearing on the album, Fearless Movement features contributions from André 3000, Thundercat, George Clinton, Bj the Chicago Kid, D Smoke, and fellow member of Washington’s collaborative group Dinner Party, Terrace Martin.

R&b is one of the biggest genres not only in music consumption but in the awards conversation. Artists like Beyoncé, Silk Sonic, Jazmine Sullivan, Jon Batiste, and H.E.R. have made a lot of noise due to their success at the Grammys, and it’s likely that one or two breakouts from this year will join their ranks. Let’s take a look at some buzzing names in R&b contention this year.
SEEBillboard Hot 100: Every #1 song of 2023
If you’re talking about R&b in 2023, you have to talk about Sza. The singer-songwriter has had a great year with the success of her sophomore album, “Sos.” It’s indisputably the frontrunner for Best Progressive R&b Album. There is, perhaps, a chance that the record could be moved to the pop field because it juggles many genres at once, but let’s assume it’s in R&b for now.

Dinner Party — the jazz/hip-hop supergroup composed of Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, Kamasi Washington, and 9th Wonder — brought the whole family to Jimmy Kimmel Live! for a performance of their single “Insane” with guest vocalist Ant Clemons.
Following an introduction by the host that misidentified the track as coming from their “self-titled EP” rather than their new sophomore LP, Enigmatic Society, the scene opened to the quartet and Clemons huddled on couches for a casual, impromptu hangout that was immediately inviting and effortlessly cool. The laidback and intimate setting perfectly fit the song’s vibey tone and lovelorn lyrics, while the band’s close proximity only added to the intense and intricate interplay between Glasper’s keys, Martin’s synth and vocoder acrobatics, Clemons’ vocals, and Washington’s saxophone flourishes. Dinner Party — the jazz/hip-hop supergroup comprised of Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington, and 9th Wonder — have shared “Insane,” a new song recorded with Ant Clemons. Listen to the single below.
“Insane” boosts a sampled drum loop from Mtume’s “Juicy Fruit” with fuzzed out bass, layering Glasper’s famous piano and Clemons’ vocals on top of the 1983 track’s syncopated rhythms. The result is what Dinner Party does best, blending the soul of R&b with hip-hop production.
Dinner Party formed back in 2020, when the group released a self-titled album that they quickly refreshed with Dessert, a new version of the LP that featured Snoop Dogg, Herbie Hancock, Alex Isley, and more. One such song, “Freeze Tag,” was one of the best releases of the year.

This time last year, Joni Mitchell was Zooming in to Clive Davis’ virtual Grammy party — kicking off the night with wine and dressed in finery, and then, as the hours wore on, kicking back to watch performers in pajamas, with popcorn and her trusty ginger cat Bootsy in tow. (Bootsy was named after Puss and Boots if you must know — and we must.)
This year, however, she strides down the red carpet in Las Vegas in a sparkling shawl and beret at the Grammys’ MusiCares Person of the Year event — for which,...

The Grammys on Sunday, April 3, are going to be a great night for breakout star Olivia Rodrigo, according to the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users who have been placing their bets here in our predictions center. Out of her seven nominations, our odds favor her to win five of them. Do you agree? Scroll down to see our predictions by artist in 33 categories.
SEEEverything to know about 2022 Grammys
Our odds favor Rodrigo to take three prizes for her breakthrough single “Drivers License”: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance. In addition, she’s the front-runner for Best Pop Vocal Album for “Sour,” and she’s the overwhelming favorite for Best New Artist. That’s a lot for a newcomer, but it’s actually not that uncommon. Those are the exact same five awards that Amy Winehouse won in her breakthrough...

It’s been nearly nine years since the Robert Glasper Experiment released Black Radio II, the second, Grammy-winning installment of his mélange of contemporary jazz, beat-heavy hip-hop, and neo-soul melodies. Since then, Glasper disbanded the Experiment, embarked on soundtrack work such as the 2020 film The Photograph and the Bel-Air TV series with Terrace Martin, and engaged himself in damaging social media controversies. There has been a resurgence in popular support for jazz, too, and that’s partly thanks to Glasper (he contributed to Kendrick Lamar’s 2015 masterwork To Pimp a...

With past winners ranging from budding talents like H.E.R. and Anderson Paak to R&b icons like Beyoncé, Luther Vandross, and Usher, the R&b field at the Grammys tends to be a huge honor. As always, this year’s nominees are filled with spectacular talent, including big commercial artists as well as some hidden gems. But who will go home with some gold come January 31? Let’s consider the two album races.
SEE2022 Gold Derby Music Awards nominations list: Lil Nas X leads with 11 Best R&b Album
This might be one of the hardest categories this year. On one hand, H.E.R. is an Album of the Year nominee this year and a previous winner in this category, as well as inarguably the biggest academy darling here with four wins out of 13 nominations in just the last three years, and eight more nominations this year. In recent years, the Grammy Awards have taken advantage of having so many top artists in one place by taping a second show a day or two after the main Grammy ceremony, all-star tributes to artists like Prince, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and others. While this year was different in many ways, they did it again, but rather than honoring a single artist, the Grammys decided to embrace their recent diversity agenda — evidenced by Bmac and honor “Sounds of Change — the iconic songs that inspired social change and left an everlasting imprint on history.” While the Grammy tributes usually air a few weeks after the big show, this one is airing tonight, just three days later, from 9 p.m. – 11 p.m. Et/Pt.

Maggie Rogers and Leon Bridges delivered the opening-night performances at the 2020 Democratic National Convention, which kicked off Monday, August 17th.
While the actual Democratic delegates are still in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as planned, most of the convention — including speeches and performances — is being held virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic. So far, that’s allowed for some unique set-ups, with Rogers choosing a particularly scenic spot in Scarborough, Maine, for her performance.

Vintage tracks like N.W.A’s “Fuck tha Police” that specifically call out police violence serve as a reminder that our current national crisis is nothing new. As Black Lives Matter resistance continues across the country, artists have channeled their anger and sadness into new protest anthems, directly inspired by Floyd’s death and its aftermath.
