Back when 22-episode seasons were the norm, and vampires, witches, and everything in between were all the rage, an itty-bitty show about romance, fangs, and teenage drama premiered on The CW.
Based on the best-selling book series, The Vampire Diaries came along when Twilight and True Blood were at the height of their popularity. While it easily could have been written off as a thankless entry into the conversation, it exceeded expectations, becoming perhaps the most well-remembered vampire tale of the bunch.
It's been 14 years since the series debuted on The Vampire Diaries, and we thought it might be fun to look back on the pilot and see how it stands up today and how well it sets up the rest of the series (hint: not well).

Is "The Vampire Diaries" your go-to rewatch? We can't say there's anything instinctively comforting about vampires, but there is a certain quality about Elena and the Salvatore brothers that keeps us coming back when we just don't want to start something new. Boy, do we miss the drama of that love triangle - especially in the early seasons.
Without giving too much away (and spoiling the trivia questions ahead!), the show features a group of teens in a sleepy town who find out there are supernatural beings all around them. Over the course of several seasons, there are violent deaths, people turning into vampires (and other creatures), love, betrayal, and of course, plenty of drama from beginning to end.
The show may have ended with a little heartbreak and moderate happiness in 2017, but thankfully, the story continued with not one spinoff but two. Test your knowledge of this supernatural world...

Embracing the darkness has been good to Legacies.
For a series that has struggled by juggling multiple different genres, Legacies Season 3 Episode 10 picked a lane, and if the series sticks with it, it might start living up to the tremendous potential of the premise.
This is the first time the series has actually excited me in a long time, and even though the episode included more of Landon needing to be saved, I'm willing to overlook it if we get this level of storytelling.
Yes, you read that right. The Landon drama can stay ... for now. Well, as long as the show continues to develop the other characters.
Legacies has failed many of its characters since Legacies Season 1 Episode 1. For some reason, the show employs a larger-than-usual cast, and it makes sense when you consider the school setting.

One of The CW’s greatest love stories is being retold in song. The Feb. 4 episode of Legacies (9/8c) stages the long-awaited production of Salvatore: The Musical, with current students embodying Vampire Diaries favorites like Damon, Stefan, Elena and Caroline.
A new batch of photos finds Josie donning Elena’s signature black hair, leather jacket and Converse sneakers as she recreates the doppelganger’s first meeting with Stefan (played here by Jed) in the cemetery. Damon, meanwhile, will be played by Kaleb, while Lizzie appears to be portraying none other than Caroline Forbes.

Zach Roerig has been arrested. The 35-year-old actor, who famously starred on The Vampire Diaries as Matt Donovan, was arrested on Sunday morning in his native Ohio for allegedly driving under the influence, Montpelier police confirmed to E! News. Per police, the probable cause for stopping Roerig was a missing front license plate. However, no further details regarding his arrest were shared at this time. While E! News has reached out to Roerig's rep for comment, he has not commented publicly on his arrest. TMZ, citing "law enforcement sources," reported Roerig was ultimately released from custody on his own recognizance and his arraignment is...

Paul Wesley was a lead cast member on The Vampire Diaries, aka the series with one of the most smoldering love triangles on the history of the small screen.
The series wrapped after eight seasons back in 2017, and Wesley is slated to appear on the second season of CBS All Access thriller, Tell Me a Story (our review!), debuting later this week.
To promote the series, Wesley stopped by Watch What Happens Live on Monday and got real about his feelings about The Vampire Diaries.
With Legacies continuing to keep the franchise alive, it was inevitable he would be asked about reprising his Stefan Salvatore role on the offshoot, but fans should not hold out hope for that.
"Oh, no," Wesley laughed when asked about a potential return, noting that he was "very happy" with the decision to kill off Stefan in the series finale.
"I actually had requested that he die.

Ian Somerhalder is set to star on Netflix's upcoming vampire drama, V Wars, but he's not entirely against returning to his Vampire Diaries roots. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the 40-year-old actor toyed with the idea of appearing on Tvd spinoff, Legacies.
While he wouldn't want to reprise his role as vampire-turned-human, Damon Salvatore, he would definitely love to direct an episode. "I actually would love to talk to Jules [The Vampire Diaries creator Julie Plec]. I would love to go and direct one of [the Legacies episodes]," Somerhalder said. "Because I know Paul [Wesley] went to do it, and he called me, and he's like, 'Bro, this is f*cking crazy.' Because it's all of our old sets, which is a time warp, 10 years ago. He's just going, 'Dude!' He was actually kind of emotional about it, he goes 'This is crazy!'"

The truth came out — in so many ways — on Thursday’s Legacies, arguably the strongest episode of the CW drama’s sophomore season thus far.
But let’s begin with the most exciting part of this week’s episode: the appearance of Freya Mikaelson! Hope’s aunt received an unexpected visit from Josie, who required some assistance in reverse engineering an “ancient Japanese black magic purge spell.” You know, casual witch stuff. Freya initially scoffed at the request, correctly pointing out that Josie was dabbling in some seriously dark forces, but she changed her tune when Josie asked if she...

Here’s a sight for sore eyes: Riley Voelkel (aka Hope’s Aunt Freya) is making her debut on Legacies this month, and TVLine has an exclusive first look at her grand arrival.
So, what brings Freya into the fold? The specifics remain a mystery, but according to the official synopsis for the Nov. 21 episode (The CW, 9/8c), she “receives an unexpected visit from one of the Salvatore Students.” So even though it may look like she’s standing solo in Rousseau’s, she’s actually chatting with… someone.

Hope Mikaelson is getting a visit from her Aunt Freya!
According to TV Guide, Riley Voelkel will reprise her The Originals role during an episode of Legacies Season 2.
No furher details have been revealed, but this is excellent news for fans of the show that came before Legacies.
It's hard to believe we went an entire season without Hope reuniting with any of her family members.
Her mother and father may be dead, but there are other members of her family out there.

Matt Donovan will not be the sheriff of Mystic Falls when Legacies Season 2 launches later this year.
TV Line is reporting that Bianca Kajlich (Rules of Engagement) will take on the role of Sheriff Mac, the lady in charge of the town we've loved since The Vampire Diaries debuted almost ten years ago.
Sheriff Mac is “the human line of defense in a town regularly besieged by monsters. Despite a troubled past, she’s willing to open herself up to a new romance when the opportunity arises.”

The outlet also reports that Mac is named after Marguerite MacIntyre who played Liz Forbes on The Vampire Diaries.
After leaving The Vampire Diaries during its sixth season, MacIntyre moved to The Originals to work in the storyline department. She then became a writer on Legacies.
As for Matt Donovan, he was played by Zach Roerig on The Vampire Diaries.

Here is a wrap-up of all the news you need to know from Wednesday, August 21, 2019.
Legacies is adding another new addition to its ranks for Season 2.
Deadline is reporting that The Fosters veteran Bianca Santos has been added in a recurring capacity.
She will play a "sharp-tongued and flirtatious” Mystic Falls High School student named Maya.
She will be the daughter of the new Sheriff in town, who goes by the name of Mac. There's no telling what became of Matt Donovan, but given that he's survived every deadly scenario in Mystic Falls, he may be off taking some much-needed respite.
Related: Legacies Adds Thomas Doherty
Maya also has a brother named Ethan, so there's that.
The good news here is that it sounds like we'll be spending more time in the town as opposed to just the high school setting.
Alexis Denisof and Thomas Doherty were previously added to the Season 2 cast.

DC Comics' "The Vampire Diaries" comic book series, debuting in 2013, ran for 39 issues, adapting The CW TV series, featuring stories by B. Clay Moore, Colleen Doran, Leah Moore and John Reppion:
"...the series is set in 'Mystic Falls', Virginia, a town charged with supernatural history since its settlement of migrants from New England in the late 19th century.
"Elena Gilbert' (Nina Dobrev), a teenage girl who has just lost both parents in a car accident, falls in love with a 162-year-old vampire named 'Stefan Salvatore' (Paul Wesley).
"Their relationship becomes increasingly complicated as Stefan's mysterious older brother 'Damon Salvatore' (Ian Somerhalder) returns, with a plan to resurrect his past lover 'Katherine Pierce', a vampire who looks exactly like Elena.
"Although Damon is initially the villain and harbors a grudge against his brother for forcing him to become a vampire, he later reconciles with Stefan and falls in love with Elena,...

Wow, that was a whole lot to process.
Seven years is a long time, and on The Originals Season 5 Episode 1, it became abundantly clear that the Hollow's power being siphoned into the Mikaelson siblings and forcing them to stay apart has changed the show like never before.
Let's talk about Hope first. Danielle Rose Russell killed every single scene as the teenage iteration of Hayley and Klaus' tribrid daughter.
Giving the werewolf at the magic school the vial of her blood and allowing him to consume it before killing himself was downright silly. Hope may be a teenager, but she should have known the ripple effect would spread back to New Orleans and cause some more unrest among the residents.
It can't be a coincidence that Hope's lapse in judgment happened right around the time Hayley mysteriously disappeared. .
Nothing happens without reason on this show, and that's why it's still...

Hey everyone, welcome to my first-ever The Vampire Diaries recap! We know there are a lot of Tvd fans on the site (and if you're not a fan, you should be), and I'm very happy to have the opportunity to write about it. If you're new to the show, it does have a fairly complicated mythology so let me explain who some of the major players are. (You can skip ahead if you already know the show!):
Stefan and Damon Salvatore: A pair of brothers who were turned into vampires in the 1860s. Each cut his own path of destruction over the next several decades, with Stefan in particular becoming known as “the Ripper” because of his viciousness. They are both in love with...
Elena Gilbert: She's like Bella from Twilight, if Bella wasn't worthless and insufferable. In love with Stefan. Also in love with Damon but refuses to admit it.

Okay, "Vampire Diaries" fans, tonight is the night. There have been a few bits (and bites) from this episode that I've been keeping secret for several weeks now, and getting to watch them play out on screen was both a relief and a heartbreaker.
First of all, before we jump into this episode, I want to take a moment to defend my favorite, Matt. I've been seeing a lot of Matt hate, but can we ease up on that, please? Matt is actually the person acting rationally here! Monsters are supposed to be scary. Sure, his whole jealous act with Caroline and Tyler isn't cute, but we're going to have to forgive him for being scared of werewolves and vampires. That is the normal reaction. He is not Bella Swan. That's why we like him!
Okay, moving on from there, "The Reckoning" was pretty much an hour of absolute perfection.
