Julia was born in New York and grew up in Rochester. Her father is a
pianist and composed children's songs. One grandfather was a Portuguese
composer of fado music and her other grandfather was a jazz pianist.
Julia started piano lessons at age seven before switching to the guitar
in her early teens. She started writing songs at age 14 and began
playing the ukulele in 2005. She also plays guitar and melodica. She
indicated in the comments section of one of her YouTube videos that she
holds dual USA-Portuguese citizenship. Julia is well known for her
Youtube channel, "jaaaaaaa". Among her various videos are original
songs, as well as covers of some of Nunes' favorite bands,: Say
Anything, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Destiny's Child. Her
original songs have been featured on the Youtube's Main Page twice,
through the above username, which she says was the result of holding
down the "a" key randomly after the "j" key, the first and last letters
of her first name. She has released five albums named: "Left Right
Wrong", "I Think You Know", "Youtube Covers", and "Settle Down". The
Last of which she made through an extremely successful Kickstarter
Campaign where she raised 77,888 dollars, over 60,000 dollars more than
she asked. On January 24, 2012, she made her television debut,
performing her single "Stay Awake" on the TBS late-night comedy show
Conan. Presently, she continues making videos for her Youtube Channel
and touring around the U.S.
