The Performer | Sarah Paulson
The Show | American Horror Story: Cult
The Episode | “Election Night” (Sept. 5, 2017)
The Performance | Going into Cult’s premiere, we so expected another fine performance from Paulson, a four-time Emmy nominee for her work in past Ahs seasons, that we didn’t really anticipate being surprised. We’ve seen her play scared before, after all — a lot. But Ryan Murphy’s muse managed to not only impress but stun us with the intensity of the fear that she was able to conjure up.
In fact, we’d only just met her new character Ally, a married lesbian mom and coulrophobia sufferer,...

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including Twin Peaks, Preacher, Casual and Arrow!
But first, some Qs coming out of San Diego Comic-Con:
1 | Does anyone not think that that Morgan saying “I don’t die” in The Walking Dead’s trailer dooms him?
2 | Kansas performing “Carry on Wayward Son” in Hall H: Peak Supernatural moment? Like, how do they even come close to topping that next year?
3 | Who would you award Miss/Mister Congeniality, of the many who passed through TVLine’s video suite?...

"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" is back with a new season, and on a new night. I have a review of the season premiere coming up just as soon as I arrest a perp named Joe Uterus... When "Parks and Rec" returned for its second season, it was with "Pawnee Zoo," an episode that would probably not wind up on a list of that series' 10 greatest episodes, but that nonetheless signaled that the show had significantly changed for the better. By virtue of having a much longer first season, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" has already gone through the growing pains "Parks" did in its first year, and long ago figured out how to take all its great raw material and turn it into a strong series. So an episode like "Undercover" is less surprising than it is comforting: a solid, often funny reminder that Schur, Goor and company didn't forget how to make this show in the off-season.

In honor of Canada Day, we are republishing this post -- Ranylt's first on the site -- from Canada Day 2007.
July 1 is Canada Day, so while my compatriots are busy painting themselves red and perfecting their Maenadic howls in time for tonight's fireworks, I've been tasked with offering up a list of ten nifty Canadian films that are mostly off the radar outside of this country (and I throw my arms around you in delight if you're a foreigner who's actually seen any of these--French kisses for anyone who appreciates them, to boot).
Many readers seem familiar with Atom Egoyan's The Sweet Hereafter and Denys Arcand's The Decline of the American Empire. And David Cronenberg's body of work needs no introduction thanks to The Fly, Naked Lunch, Scanners, Crash (the other Crash!) and Videodrome. As unnatural as it is to omit Egoyan, Arcand and Cronenberg from a Canadian film overview,...

Lucy Mangan on the people hitting the headlines this week

Let the Greeks continue their vulgar riots. Here in Britain we do things differently. We press buttons. We press buttons that slow down traffic, and let that be a lesson to all of you.
Goaded beyond endurance by the increasing thunder of lorries along the A35, which cuts through the otherwise picturesque village of Chideock, Dorset, Tony Fuller and his friends marched to the pedestrian crossing and took it in turns to press the button, walk across the road and back again, bringing vehicles to a standstill for an hour.
Not for the first time I find myself weeping for the country, though whether with pride or despair I cannot tell.

Zookepers in the Us have discovered that a tortoise they thought was female for over half a century is actually male. Cleveland Metroparks Zoo spokesman Tom O'Konowitz confirmed that the creature, previously known as Mary, has now been renamed Terry, The Chronicle-Telegram reports O'Konowitz said: "This is definitely a first for us. It came as something of a surprise to finally figure out Mary's true identity. It took us 55 years to finally say she's a boy. "With some species like elephants, gorillas (more)...
