One of the key thoughts behind the architecture of cities is to give its citizens much needed space to meet and make it possible for each of them to reach every district. While the theory is perhaps taken into account when it comes to city planning, the reality is quite a different one, because urban geography and architecture actually divides people, and often confirms concepts such as social strata. This is not so much the fault of the planning itself, but is more the result of certain prejudices or mindsets within society, ideas that people should stick to members of their own class and should not mingle with others. In her feature “Aristocrats” Yukiko Sode explores themes such as class and gender, as well as the way the layout of cities like Tokyo makes it possible for a certain class to stay within itself.

The most memorable scene in Ryuichi Hiroki’s Netflix thriller “Ride or Die” is its most brutal one, in which a whole bedroom gets painted in Dario Argento red after few minutes of rather pink activities. Those we can count are but a few, but when they happen, Hiroki is fast to return where he had started many years ago. Naked skin is famously something that made his career, and once the erotic wheel starts rotating it takes a wee bit of time to put a halt to it. For the audience who can totally live with only three minutes of canoodling/ making love instead of six – these moments are ideal for visiting the restroom or pouring a glass of whatever. For the others, six minutes will be too short because some sexual fantasies never cease to excite specific type of viewers.

A young woman hits the road with the killer of her abusive husband in Ryūichi Hiroki’s adaptation of cult manga series
The prolific director Ryūichi Hiroki has carved out a niche in modern Japanese cinema with his willingness to delve into the darker sides of sexuality. Following a start in the softcore “pink” films, He has moved to the mainstream while exploring subjects such as sadomasochism. Ride or Die, a live-action adaptation of Ching Nakamura’s arresting but disquieting manga series Gunjō, fits perfectly in the director’s transgressive wheelhouse.
The moods of Ride or Die alternate between neon-lit cityscapes and sun-drenched open roads. The opening is shockingly baptised in blood: Rei (Kiko Mizuhara), a twentysomething lesbian, has slashed a man to death in his own home. It is later revealed that her victim is the abusive husband of Nanae (Honami Sato), a high-school classmate for whom Rei has...

Photo: ‘Ride or Die’/Netflix ‘Thelma & Louise’ meets ‘Bound’ in ‘Ride or Die’, the new Japanese Netflix original film in which lesbian Rei Nagasawa (Kiko Mizuhara) kills the wife-beating husband of old schoolyard crush Nanae Shinoda (Honami Sato), who undresses early in the film to reveal a body covered in bruises. It begins with a ‘Goodfellas’ tracking shot as Rei enters a nightclub to mark her prey, following him home for a graphic sex scene (did I mention that director Ryuichi Hiroki got his start working on softcore porn?) that ends with bare, blood-spattered breasts--she stabs him in the neck while riding him à la ‘Gone Girl’. Afterward, Rei reveals that she had been a virgin beforehand. In the spirit of “Thelma and Louise,” a lesbian fugitive and the woman she’d kill for hit the road with three stilettos and a blood-red BMW in “Ride or Die.” A glammed up, erotically-charged cocktail of amour fou and true romance directed by Ryuichi Hiroki and written by Nami Kikkawa, the Netflix production gives agency to full-blooded female protagonists. That’s a rarity in Japan’s studio-dominated, cookie-cutter entertainment industry, which explains its liberating, inexhaustible energy.
Based on the adult-skewing manga “Gunjo” (Ultramarine) by Ching Nakamura, the film stars actor-model Kiko Mizuhara (“Norwegian Wood”) and actor-musician Honami Sato. The two celebs’ graphic sex scenes and full-frontal nudity are bound to be a talking point in Japan, where managers usually exert such tight control over their actors’ public image they forbid anything risqué. Given such a system, the audacity and ardor Mizuhara and Sato generated on screen prove their commitment.

Being born in Singapore, growing up in Malaysia and being based in Japan, Edmund Yeo‘s films always had a pan-Asian perspective, and “Malu”, a Japan-Malaysia co production, seems to cement this approach through a narrative that shares many elements with Naomi Kawase‘s style.
Malu is screening at Tokyo International Film Festival
The story, which unfolds in non-linear fashion, revolves around two sisters, Hong and Lan, who live with their mother in a small fishing village in Malaysia. Their mother, however, is completely unstable and has suicidal tendencies, a mentality that puts much strain to the two girls, and particularly Hong, who, as the older, is also charged with taking care of Lan. One day, their alienated grandmother kidnaps Hong, and actually raises her by herself, with the two girls not meeting for 20 years, until their mother’s death brings them together for one day. As I have mentioned before, adapting Haruki Murakami’s works in cinema is definitely an arduous task, due to the surrealism, the minimalism, the abstractness and the lack of action and “proper” finale that characterize most of his novels. However, Tran Anh Hung’s effort was quite successful, particularly due to Mark Lee’s cinematography, Johnny Greenwood’s music and the connection with the homonymous song by The Beatles.
The story takes place during the 60’s and begins with the school years of three friends, Toru, Kizuki and Naoko, with the last two being a couple since childhood almost. At one point, and without any particular reason, Kizuki commits suicide and Toru, who had no other friends except him, moves to Tokyo to study but also to get away from the pain. Clearly, the The Weeknd didn't feel a petrifying kiss coming. The Weeknd spends most of the video dancing around a desrted planet, waiting for the brief moment in the day where Mizuhara, entombed in stone, returns to her human form so they can finally be together. After an eclipse, she returns to her stone state. To their surprise and horror, she crumbles. A black snake emerges from the rubble, and when The Weeknd reaches for it,...

Based on the world-renowned franchise, the live-action edition of Attack on Titan was highly anticipated by fans all over the world and on a personal note, I was eager to watch what Yoshihiro Nishimura, the director of Tokyo Gore Police and a special effects magician could achieve with the depiction of the Titans. However, the fact that the initial director, Tetsuya Nakashima (Confessions), left the project due to artistic differences seemed like a negative, although not one to ruin the movie.
Ι won’t get into much details about the general concept, since I believe it is largely known; thus, here is what happens in the movie. Eren, Armin and Mikasa, frustrated by their constraint inside the wall, decide to secretly break loose.

Attack On Titan: Part One Screens at The Hi-Pointe (1005 McCausland Ave., St. Louis, Mo 63117) Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 10:00pm,Thursday, Oct. 1 at 10:00pm, and Wednesday, Oct. 7at 10:00pm
I have no idea what the popular manga/anime Attack On Titan even looks like, but this live-action version looks ambitiously nuts! Apparently fans of the source material aren’t happy with it, but that’s not surprising. St. Louis area fantasy film fans will get the opportunity to see Attack On Titan: Part One when it plays three nights at St. Louis’ best movie theater: the fabulous Hi-Pointe!
The man-eating humanoids called Titans first appeared over 100 years ago, devouring humans without motive or remorse. What was left of mankind retreated behind three enormous concentric walls. After a century of relative peace, a young boy named Eren is growing restless. He dreams of one day seeing the world behind the walls.

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming live-action Attack on Titan movie, and it’s pretty freakin’ spectacular. It seems like some Attack on Titan fans out there are torn on this big screen adaptation, but I think it looks like it’s going to be a hell of a lot of fun! This trailer gives us our best look yet at what's in store for us, and I love what I'm seeing! I have to say, I enjoyed watching the reactions of the characters as they watch in horror as someone gets eat by a Titan.
The story of Attack on Titan takes place in a world where the remnants of humanity live inside a series of connected cities, isolated by enormous walls. These walls exists to keep the Titans out, gigantic humanoid creatures who devour humans seemingly without reason. These Titans have reduced the world's population to staggeringly low numbers.

However, today, we finally get to see more of this much-awaited though heatedly-debated Japanese live action film!
“Attack on Titan” Teaser: What We Think
The thirty-second teaser breezes through the characters and the plot, so if you are not very familiar with the series, you might have a difficult time making sense out of anything or trying to spot characters. Well, spoilers if you haven’t read a portion of the manga or watched the first few episodes of the anime version.

Japanese live action movies tend to be a hit or miss. Depending on the directorial take, emotional balance of the script, and the actors cast, it can be worthy of endless praises and awards such as the recently concluded “Rurouni Kenshin” trilogy. Otherwise, it can end up as a movie better forgotten such as the infamous Hollywood adaptation of a widely popular series, “Dragonball Evolution.”
While news of live action films may make some of us cringe in their anticipated cheesiness and possible inferior quality, the chances of seeing our beloved manga and anime characters come to life are often slim. That’s why today, we present you with three upcoming live action films that we believe are potential hits!

13 awesome character posters have been released for director Shinji Higuchi's live-action Attack of Titan film. Each one gives us a look at a different character in the film. I've got to say, I love what I'm seeing here. It's definitely exciting to get our first glimpse at what the style and tone of the film will be.
One of the last things we heard about the Japanese feature is that it would be split into two films. Attack on Titan creator, Hajime Isayama, helped in the creation of the movie and even came up with seven additional characters. Of course, the movie will stay true to the spirit of the source material.
The cast for the film includes Haruma Miura as Eren, Kiko Mizuhara as Mikasa, Kanata Hongo as Armin, Satomi Ishihara as Hanji, Nanami Sakuraba as Sasha, Takahiro Miura as Jean, Hiroki Hasegawa as Shikishima, Ayame Misaki as Hiana,...

I've got some good news for all you Attack on Titan fans out there! Last week director Shinji Higuchi announced that the live-action adaptation he's working on will be split into two feature films! He also revealed that with the help of manga creator Hajime Isayama, they will introduce some new characters and new, more dangerous villains. As a fan of the franchise, I'm completely okay with new characters being added to the story. I'm sure the movie will end up being just as badass as the anime.
23 year-old actor Haruma Miura was previously announced as the film’s star, and he is taking on role of Eren Jaeger. We now have a list of actors who will be Joining Miura in Attack on Titan, and they consist of Hiroki Hasegawa (Jellyfish Princess), Kiko Mizuhara (Norwegian Wood), Kanata Hongō (Prince of Tennis), Takahiro Miura (Space Battleship Yamato), Nanami Sakuraba (Twin...

It virtually goes without saying that culture in the industrialized nations is heavily driven by interest in those people deemed worthy of celebrity status, even if some people would rather not admit to it. Occasionally a story will leak about how the obsessiveness spreads into the minds of those being objectified as well, with rumours of photoshop, too much makeup and even plastic surgery.

Given Radiohead's presence on the soundtrack to Tran Ahn-Hung's I Come With The Rain it should come as no surprise that Tran has turned to Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood to score his upcoming film adaptation of Haruki Murakami's Norwegian Wood. But the fact that it's not surprising news doesn't make it any less fantastic.
Greenwood, of course, made his debut as a film score composer with P.T. Anderson's There Will Be Blood and he did such a fantastic job there that I'm honestly surprised that he hasn't had offers pouring in since. Anyone who has read any Murakami can tell you that music plays a vitally important role in the man's work so a good score is absolutely essential here and Greenwood seems like an inspired choice.

And of Murakami's more straight forward works Norwegian Wood is a great favorite, a melancholic riff on young love. And the news that Tran Ahn Hung - the Vietnamese director of Cyclo and The Scent of Green Papaya - was the man bringing Murakami to the screen ... well,...
