In crafting The Simpsons‘ first-ever hour-long episode, executive producer Matt Selman wanted to avoid one thing “at all costs”: Mr. Burns rapping.

Some context: Sunday’s episode (Fox, 8/7c) is being pegged as a riff on The Great Gatsby — with a hip-hop twist, of course — as Mr. Burns befriends rapper Jay G with whom he bonds over being “part of the corporate system, as well as having a ruthless lust for power.”

“The Simpsons” finally came up with its first-ever one-hour episode by accident.
In the episode, “The Great Phatsby,” Mr. Burns becomes pals with hip-hop mogul “Jay G,” who ends up conning him out of his fortune. It began as a regular episode, “but in the spirit of excitement and impulsiveness and exuberance, we expanded it to an hour-long after the table read because it had gone so well,” said executive producer Matt Selman.
“Empire” had launched as a mega-hit, and the feature “Straight Outta Compton” had just been released, when “The Simpsons” team were developing the episode. It was in that zeitgeist that the show’s producers were inspired to fully embrace the genre.
“We had never done a hip-hop episode to this degree,” Selman said. “It’s embracing the spirit of excess so commonly found in hip-hop lyrics. It’s a Mr. Burns episode. He learns the joy of...

The Simpsons' loving, rap-centric send-up of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel The Great Gatsby, titled "The Great Phatsby," airs on January 15th. In a recently released behind-the-scenes clip, comedian Keegan-Michael Key, who voices a washed-up-rapper-turned-candle-salesman named Jazzy James, tries out a variety of possible intonations for his character.
According to EW, "The Great Phatsby" focuses on a "hip-hop mogul," Jay G, who befriends Mr. Burns and turns him into a profligate spender. When Burns hits rock bottom and runs out of funds, Jay smoothly takes control of the nuclear plant.

The Grammy Award for Best Visual Media Compilation has been awarded since 1999. Of those 16 past races, a film soundtrack won all but two of them: the exceptions were the Beatles' "Love" (2007) from the Cirque du Soleil show of the same name, and "Boardwalk Empire: Volume 1" (2011), which featured music from the HBO TV series. -Break- Subscribe to Gold Derby Breaking News Alerts & Experts’ Latest Oscar Predictions To date, "Boardwalk Empire" is the only TV series soundtrack to win, but it's possible this year will be another exception. So … about that proposed Empire concert series …
Empire costars Jussie Smollett and Bryshere Gray (aka Yazz the Greatest) stopped by American Idol on Wednesday night to give the idea a test run of sorts in a performance of their song "No Apologies."
Their performance was on fire. Both Smollett and Grey are recording artists outside of their Empire duties, and their combined stage presence was absolutely electric and something for which we would camp out in a sidewalk tent to buy concert tickets.
"Less than a year ago, I was an independent artist, doing it like anybody else," Smollett previously revealed to People.

The seventh episode of Empire airs tonight, and we know you’re prepping for it by listening to “Drip Drop” for the hundredth time this week. While you were all daydreaming about Jamal and Hakeem, we talked to Jim Beanz, longtime Timbaland collaborator and the man behind Empire’s soundtrack, about what to look forward to this season. Would you Empire fans be down with a Terrence Howard rap performance?
Here are three things to look out for, according to Beanz, who also plays troubled rapper Titan on the show.
Titan is coming back.
Supposedly bigger than Kanye West and Jay Z, Titan appeared in episode four as a hot act Lucious (Terrence Howard) wants to sign. Beanz wasn’t planning on playing Titan, but agreed to fill in for the part after the original actor slated for the role dropped out. “Yes, he is [coming back],” Beanz told us. “He gets out of jail.
