- I think people underestimate how serious the flu can be, especially for vulnerable segments of our population such as infants, the elderly and the immunocompromised. Flu kills thousands of people in Canada each year, and it doesn't have to: the flu shot can be very effective in preventing infection.
- There are many reasons that parents cite when it comes to not vaccinating, but there are decades of great scientific and medical research that shows those concerns aren't justified. Unfortunately, it's difficult for us to get that information out to the people who need to hear it. There are so many conflicting sources of information at people's fingertips, especially on the Internet, and it can be hard for someone to determine what's accurate and from a trusted source, and what my look scientific but is actually misleading.
- As a teenager I saw the movie 'Outbreak ' which really piqued my curiosity. I started reading everything I could get my hands on about infectious diseases, and I realized then that being a disease detective and tracking new and dangerous germs was what I wanted to do with my life.
