Work and family are the most vital things for Kyle Marvin, who has worked in Hollywood for decades in various capacities. A versatile talent in the American film industry, Marvin has been active in the entertainment business since at least the early 2010s. Apart from acting, the Portland, Oregon native works as a writer, production designer, director, and producer. He’s probably best known for Kicks, Hunter Gatherer, The Climb, and 80 for Brady. In all of these projects, he collaborated with his creative partner, American filmmaker Michael Angelo Covino. Marvin and Covino have come a long way as creative partners.

The buzz around “80 for Brady” focuses on its octogenarian stars — Sally Field, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, and Lily Tomlin — and Tom Brady’s legacy, both of which drove the movie to second place at the box office last weekend. The story of four Brady-obsessed friends who travel to see him play the Super Bowl is charming, bittersweet, and a smart play by Paramount to capture the demographics of older women and NFL fans alike. But its unsung heroes are two young filmmakers best known for a low-budget Cannes hit.
“80 for Brady” marks the directorial debut of Kyle Marvin, who, with Michael Angelo Covino, scripted and starred in the 2019 Cannes hit “The Climb,” which was Covino’s own directorial debut. In 2021, the pair rewrote “80 for Brady” and they now share executive producer credits.

Tom Brady went from star quarterback to movie star on Tuesday night, walking the red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere of 80 for Brady, which he both produced and acts in (as himself).
The NFL star was greeted by fans chanting his name the second he stepped out of his car, and was surrounded by a hoard of industry insiders seeking photos and handshakes as he slowly made his way into the Westwood theater.
Brady’s co-stars — and the film’s leading ladies — Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field and Rita Moreno also caught up with him on the carpet, and Tomlin had some high praise for the athlete’s acting skills.
“He was a wonderful actor,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “He listens, which is the key mark of a good actor. He really listens and he responds in the moment and you can see him thinking and processing...

A sweet if toothless “Girls Trip” for the “Golden Girls” crowd, “80 for Brady” unites four Hollywood legends — “Grace and Frankie” duo Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno and Sally Field — as a real-life gang of octogenarian amigas who road-tripped to the 2017 Super Bowl to cheer on their favorite quarterback, Tom Brady. Selected as the opening-night cork-popper for the Palm Springs International Film Festival (whose diva-worshiping audience reps the two demographics this featherweight offering serves best: gay and gray), Kyle Marvin’s directorial debut is a pleasant enough reminder that these gals are still game for a good time.
More fuddy-duddy buddy comedy than sports film, the female-scripted laffer (co-written by Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern) celebrates the fact that football appeals to more than just bros. Never mind that its central foursome seems less interested in Brady’s form than in how well he fills out his uniform. Here,...

Tom Brady left Jane Fonda starstruck.
The legendary quarterback produces and stars in upcoming film “80 for Brady,” based on the true story of a group of senior women who take a road trip to the 2017 Super Bowl to meet Brady. Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field, and Rita Moreno star as the core friend group, with Brady’s former teammates Julian Edelman, Rob Gronkowski, and Danny Amendola appearing.
“My knees actually got weak when he walked into my trailer,” Fonda told The Hollywood Reporter at the world premiere of the film during the Palm Springs International Film Festival. “I’m in awe of that kind of skill. When somebody is the best in the world at what they do, you have to honor that and respect it. I was just awestruck.”
Fonda continued, “He was kind and humble, which is hard to believe considering how brilliant he is at what he does,...

Rare is the time when people aren’t talking about Tom Brady, but the NFL great proved to be the most popular topic of discussion on the red carpet in Palm Springs on Friday night.
The desert city hosted the world premiere of Paramount Pictures’ road trip comedy 80 for Brady at Richard Center for the Arts at Palm Springs High School, as its stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field, Rita Moreno and Harry Hamlin (attending with wife Lisa Rinna) added some Hollywood star power to the opening night festivities of the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
While Brady was not in attendance — his Tampa Bay Buccaneers will soon be heading to the NFL playoffs — his key teammates on the film were keen to talk about the first-time producer who makes a cameo in director Kyle Marvin’s film. How do you create suspense in a movie built around Super Bowl Li, the legendary 2017 matchup between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons, which saw the Patriots trail the Falcons 28-3 in the third quarter only to rally and win 34-28 in overtime? That was one of the challenges facing Kyle Marvin when he agreed to direct 80 for Brady, which will have its world premiere Jan. 6 as the opening-night film at the 34th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival.
Marvin — who, along with his writing and producing partner Michael Angelo Covino, starred in 2019’s The Climb, which explored male friendship — tackles a different sort of friendship in Brady. It follows four old friends, spry octogenarians played by Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field and Rita Moreno, traveling to the Super Bowl to cheer on their hero, then-Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

The first trailer for Paramount’s “80 For Brady” is like a Super Bowl ad for legendary comediennes, boasting a who’s who of pop culture icons. That includes “Grace and Frankie” cohorts Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, reuniting for the first time since their beloved Netflix sitcom ended in April. They’re teaming up with Sally Field and Rita Moreno on an offbeat road trip movie set against the NFL. The film from director Kyle Marvin — who you might recognize from the cast of AppleTV+’s “WeCrashed” — also stars someone named Tom Brady, who we’re told is some sort of athletic professional.
No joke though, “80 For Brady” seems like a decently silly and fun time: whether you’re a New England Patriots fan or an admirer of the aforementioned actresses. “80 for Brady” is based on the true story of four senior women who in 2017 all traveled to Houston to...

IFC Films has acquired North American rights to “God’s Time,” the kinetic debut feature from writer and director Daniel Antebi. “God’s Time” had its World Premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival in the U.S. Narrative Competition, where it won a Best Performance Special Jury Mention for actress Liz Caribel.
At the festival, Paste praised it for conveying “a real sense of New York life,” while Cinemacy called it “Fast-paced and hip, fitting squarely into the growing category of films for the ‘Euphoria’ crowd.”
The movie centers around Dev and Luca, two best friends, who are also recovering addicts. The duo are secretly in love with fellow addict Regina. She spends every support group meeting sharing her wild fantasies about killing her evil ex-boyfriend. One day, her tone shifts, and Regina sounds serious. This sets Dev and Luca off on a 24-hour odyssey through pandemic-gripped New York City...

Cannes — At a banner ceremony for female filmmakers, Russian writer-director Kira Kovalenko’s sophomore feature “Unclenching the Fists” won the top prize for best film in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival this evening.
The film, a powerful study of a young woman attempting to assert her independence in a North Ossetian mining town with a bitter legacy of violence, was one of four female-directed features to take awards from a jury headed by British director Andrea Arnold — a Cannes veteran whose first documentary, “Cow,” was unveiled in Cannes Premieres this year.
Arnold cited the “explosion of originality, physicality and feeling” in Kovalenko’s film as their primary motivation for awarding it the top prize. Shortly after the ceremony, it was announced that Mubi had picked up Kovalenko’s film for distribution in North America, the U.K. and other territories.

Slated to open in theaters right when the pandemic lockdowns started, and subsequently lost in the 2020 shuffle, Cannes award-winner “The Climb” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) is a smart comedy you might have missed. Co-writers Michael Angelo Covino (who also directed) and Kyle Marvin star as lifelong friends Mike and Kyle who may, as it turns out, be dragging each other down. A playful and occasionally ouch-y spin on the buddy comedy, this film may well be a calling card for two up-and-coming comic talents.
Also available: Mel Gibson makes a very non-traditional Santa Claus in the dark holiday comedy “Fatman” (Saban/Paramount), but Walton Goggins steals the show as the hitman hired to dispatch St. Nick; Adam Brody stars as “The Kid Detective” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment), whose boozy grown-up existence doesn’t quite reflect his youthful potential; “Synchronic” (Well Go USA Entertainment) stars Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan...

Atlantis (Valentyn Vasyanovych)
In Valentyn Vasyanovych’s post-apocalyptic Atlantis, the sky above Ukraine hangs like a sheet of steel, a uniform mass of clouds bucketing water onto the mud-covered wasteland down below. The year is 2025, and the country has just emerged victorious–if shattered–from a war with Russia. It’s a conflict all too steeped in the decade’s real-life skirmishes between Ukraine and its neighbor to come across as strictly fictional, and that’s the thing that makes Atlantis so disturbing. It’d be tempting to call Vasyanovych’s a dystopia, were it not for that fact that, all through its 108 minutes, everything about it feels almost...

As this endless year of 2020 mercifully nears its last days, does it feel like you’ve been cooped up for an eternity (save for those quick supply runs)? Are you aching to travel to those “wide open spaces”? Well, then you may want to take a virtual “vacay” via your local multiplex (if it’s not shuttered). This big flick opening on the holiday will whisk you away to such a spot, but you’ll also do a bit of backward time-travelin’, say 150 years or so. No need for concern about the trek, since a familiar film face is your guide, none other than our ole’ “movie buddy” Tom Hanks, who is entering somewhat (for him) uncharted territory. Although he’s voiced a famous animated “old-timey” sheriff, he’s never starred in an “honest-to-gosh” Western. So, let’s saddle up as Mr. H spreads the News Of The World.

While we aim to discuss a wide breadth of films each year, few things give us more pleasure than the arrival of bold, new voices. It’s why we venture to festivals and pore over a variety of different features that might bring to light some emerging talent. This year was an especially notable time for new directors making their stamp, and we’re highlighting the handful of 2020 debuts that most impressed us.
Below, one can check out a list spanning a variety of different genres and many are available to stream here. In years to come, take note as these helmers (hopefully) ascend.

Two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks and Oscar-nominated director Paul Greengrass have teamed up again for Universal’s Western “News of the World,” one of the biggest studio films in the awards race. The duo last worked together in 2013’s “Captain Phillips,” which ended up with a best picture nomination.
Like an all-American game of baseball, “News of the World” is a straight-down-the-middle film that checks many of the boxes of classic Hollywood pictures that used to be very popular within the industry. To successfully impact the Oscars, you must also reach the newest Academy members, who are younger and hungry for new and dynamic content. If it succeeds in rallying the support of older members, the film will plant itself in the middle of the Oscar race.

Tom Hanks is the kind of actor about whom we accept the aphorism that he could read the phone book and make it sound great. Reuniting Hanks with “Captain Phillips” director Paul Greengrass, laconic Western “News of the World” tests that theory by casting the star as a news reader, a Civil War veteran who travels across Texas to deliver the nation’s headlines to small-town residents hungry for updates from afar — and the result, while gorgeous to behold, is only slightly more exciting than the phone book option might have been.
For a dime a head, crowds congregate to hear Capt. Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Hanks) recite stories culled from various broadsheets — news that ranges from Reconstruction policies to miners’ strikes. It’s a fascinating occupation, especially in light of where attitudes toward “the media” stand today, reflective of a time when the public didn’t take 24/7 news coverage for granted,...

Sony Pictures Classics has delayed the release of “Nine Days,” the Sundance hit from first-time director Edson Oda starring Winston Duke. It will no longer release on Jan. 22 and is now slated to open in theaters worldwide next summer. However, the film will still qualify for the 2021 Film Independent Spirit Awards, set for April 24.
With the Covid-19 pandemic still handicapping movie theaters, an intimate film like “Nine Days” benefits most from a big theatrical experience with its immersive sound and stunning camera work. One of the dark horse awards contenders for the upcoming season, with best actor (Duke) and original screenplay (Oda) being its best possibilities.
Moving to the summer could give the film a better chance to be discovered by audiences. By starting in New York and Los Angeles and then expanding to more markets, the film could be a financial success with its all-star cast. With similar themes...

Topic Studios and “The Climb” filmmakers Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin have wrapped production on their second collaboration, a pandemic-set comedy from filmmaker Daniel Antebi titled “God’s Time.”
The new project comes as part of Covino and Marvin’s first-look deal with Topic Studios after working together on the Cannes-winning hit “The Climb,” which is now in theaters, distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. The filmmakers serve as executive producers on “God’s Time” under their Watch This Ready banner, alongside producers Emily Korteweg, Andrew Hutcheson and Reid Hannaford. And the new project fulfills the element of the Topic Studios partnership that Covino previously told Variety excited him most — having the opportunity to promote other new talent.

Eighteen months after “The Climb” debuted at Cannes, the film’s director, writer and star Michael Angelo Covino saw his film in a movie theater. It’s been a long and winding road for the film to ultimately land in theaters, but even amid a pandemic, it’s a big moment for Covino and his filmmaking partner and co-star Kyle Marvin.
“I’m gonna probably head up to Westchester or Connecticut to sit in a 25% full theater by myself and just sort of take it in,” Covino told Variety on the eve of the film’s release. “[I’ll] buy my own ticket and just have that experience, because that only happens once in a lifetime, getting to buy a ticket to your first movie.”
“It’s been amazing to still have the ability to come out with the film right now,” he added. “Obviously the world has sort of stopped in a lot of ways.

For a film that charts a quarreling friendship as it jumps years in a single cut, it’s lamentably fitting that The Climb has had such a long, winding journey to audiences. First premiering at Cannes Film Festival 18 months ago, where it picked up an Un Certain Regard jury prize, Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin’s dark, heartfelt comedy played at Telluride, TIFF, BFI London, Sundance, and more, but its theatrical release last March was promptly cut short due to the pandemic.
Sony Pictures Classics are now re-introducing the film as it is currently in limited theatrical release and we’re sharing a conversation we had with director-writer-star Michael Angelo Covino and writer-star Kyle Marvin about comic timing, one-takes, the film’s journey, and balancing abrasive characters.

It’s no secret that the box office space has been struggling to find life during the pandemic — and it seems to be even more difficult for the specialty box office space. As specialty films try to navigate the space by shifting to PVOD, digital, and virtual openings, some distributors continue to brave the landscape of shuttered theaters and strategize theatrical releases to keep the specialty box office afloat.
Neon’s buzzy Oscar offering Ammonite is the the most noticeable specialty box office title that was released in theaters this weekend. The period romance, written and directed by Francis Lee and starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan, debuted on 280 screens this weekend, earning an estimated cume of $85,000, with a per-screen average of $304.

I shook their hands. I remember a lot of what Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin, the on- and off-screen duo responsible for the new film “The Climb,” said. But mostly, I remember that in the last in-person interview I conducted before Covid-19 upended the entire apparatus of film distribution and promotion, I shook the hands of the interview subjects before enjoying a half-hour chat on how they constructed one of the year’s most inspired, intentional comedic romps.

Weddings, funerals, Thanksgiving and the rest: These are the occasions that typically bring us together, which must be why The Climb — Michael Angelo Covino’s bristling new comedy — uses them to wedge two men apart. Take the title at face value: Uphill battles are the spine and central pleasure of this movie. The Climb stars Covino as Mike, a man intent on perpetuating his own emotional self-destruction, and Kyle Marvin as Kyle, the wet noodle unlucky enough to be Mike’s best friend. This is not an odd couple. For reasons obvious and inarguable,...

Neon will bring some passionate romance in Ammonite this weekend. The period pic starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan opened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September where it immediately garnered buzz as an Oscar favorite.
Written and directed by Francis Lee, Ammonite is set in the 1840s and follows once-acclaimed paleontologist Mary Anning (Winslet), who works alone on the Southern English coastline of Lyme Regis. With the days of her fame behind her, she’s stern and doesn’t exactly like the company of others. She spends her time digging up common fossils to sell to rich tourists to support herself and her ailing widowed mother (Gemma Jones).
Enter geologist James McArdle (Roderick Murchison) who arrives in Lyme with his wife Charlotte (Ronan). He asks Mary to keep his wife company who is recuperating from a personal tragedy. The two are from totally different worlds Mary struggles while...

The new drama, The Climb, begins with, well, two cyclist friends climbing a winding, mountain road as they discuss their current state of affairs. It is a rather obvious metaphor for the twists and turns the relationship these two friends have will take throughout the entirety of the film.
The Climb was written and directed by Michael Angelo Covino, who also plays Mike, the better cyclist of the two, but also the worse friend. His friend, Kyle is getting married and is talking incessantly about how happy he is and how great it will be to be married. That is, until Mike reveals to him that he has slept with Kyle’s bride to be and that he is in love with her. This effectively ends the bike ride, and their relationship.
The film then skips ahead a few years and picks up the story of the two men in...

Such Great Heights: Covino & Marvin Mine the Nexus of Toxic Friendships
Friendships between heterosexual men are already an anomaly in cinema, and representations are often filtered through their romantic relationships with women, as halting and stifled as the rigid masculinity which defines these counterparts. Director Michael Angelo Covino and his co-star and co-writer Kyle Marvin, each playing characters of the same name, grapple with a presentation a bit more complex in The Climb, which debuted at Cannes in 2019 and is based on their 2018 short film.
Bearing a multitude of homages to French cinematic themes, it’s an example of amour fou for the painstaking platonic realm, hinging on farce before sprawling awkwardly spreadeagle into the kind of poignancy as authentic as it is rare in explorations of human relationships.…...

It’s the ultimate indie filmmaker fantasy: You raise modest funding for your buddy comedy based on your popular short film and submit it to Cannes. Festival director Thierry Fremaux adores your feature debut so much that, when it premieres in Un Certain Regard, he introduces it himself. Distributors and media fawn over your movie, which wins the Cannes Coup de Coeur award. You quickly seal a deal with a top agency (UTA) and one of the few remaining theatrical distributors (Sony Pictures Classics).
That actually happened to Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin — way back in May 2019. The duo co-wrote and co-starred in “The Climb,” a micro-budget comedy that Covino also directed. The movie starts out with the two chums, Mike (Covino) and Kyle (Marvin), peddling hard at the top of a steep mountain pass during one of their frequent bike rides. Kyle announces that he’s getting married to his fiancé.
