Hitting 10 years as host of NBC’s Late Night, Seth Meyers has learned many lessons along the way. The biggest among them? The ability to be “as nimble as possible,” according to the late night host.
He has learned not to “marry yourself to an idea before the show actually tapes,” Meyers told The Hollywood Reporter during a special PaleyFest event Monday night. The host joined pal and the evening’s moderator Andy Samberg at the Dolby Theatre for a conversation looking back at the beginning of his Late Night journey and the highlights along the way.
After a video introduction of the popular Late Night segment “Day Drinking With Seth,” Meyers and Samberg took the stage, jumping right into conversation. Samberg asked Meyers to look back at the beginning of the show in 2014 and the process he went through to land the gig.

The writers behind Late Night with Seth Meyers are taking their comedy to Washington D.C. this summer — Just don’t tell Seth.
“Don’t Tell Seth! An Evening with the Seth Meyers Writers” will come to the Kennedy Center on June 14-15, as part of its Comedy at the Kennedy Center programming.
Hosted by writers John Lutz and Peter Grosz, the variety show will feature standup comedy, sketches, audience interaction, and improv from Late Night scribes Matt Goldich, Jenny Hagel, Jeff Wright, Allison Hord, Ben Warheit, and Ian Morgan.
“Unshackled from the confines of network censors and what Seth thinks is ‘appropriate’ for his show,” the event description teases, “they are finally free to let loose!”
Seth’s writers are familiar faces on Late Night, often appearing on the program in sketches and desk segments like “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell.” But this isn’t the first time they...

Jenny Hagel is “obsessed” with giving people advice – whether people ask or not. “I’m sure it’s everybody’s least favorite thing about me, but I can’t stop,” she admits. “It’s like a facial tic, except in my personality.”
While this could be annoying in the hands of a lesser talent, Hagel happens to be a gifted comedian and writer with a talent for showmanship. Case in point, her Emmy-nominated work as a a writer and performer on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” where she is perhaps best known for a recurring segment called “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell” with her frequent collaborator Amber Ruffin. Because Ruffin is Black and Hagel is gay, they appear every so often to recite punchlines that are off-limits to the host. Hagel also served as head writer on “The Amber Ruffin Show,” where she frequently appeared as various characters – including Marjorie Taylor Greene...

After Writers Guild of America waged a protest regarding the Television Academy‘s decision to move the outstanding writing for a variety series or special categories out of the upcoming Emmy telecast, the TV Academy has reversed course.
In a joint release sent out today, the Television Academy, Fox and the WGA said they were “happy to announce they have reached an agreement to include the Writing for a Variety Series category in the 75th Emmy Awards telecast airing live on Fox on January 15, 2024, at 8pm Est / 5pm Pst.”
Because this year’s Primetime Emmys has moved the variety special (live) category into the telecast (it was on the Creative Arts show last year), the TV Academy was likely looking to keep the telecast capped at 25 awards, so something had to fall out. And in this case, it was the variety writing field that originally got pushed to the Creative Arts ceremony.

NBC has canceled its second-year comedy American Auto.
The series, set at a struggling car company, wrapped its second season in April. It was the last scripted show on NBC’s 2022-23 schedule still in limbo; American Auto’s cancellation follows those of Young Rock and Grand Crew a week ago.
NBC has also opted not to go ahead with its lone remaining comedy pilot, Non-Evil Twin, from Amber Ruffin (who also stars) and former Black-ish showrunner Kenny Smith.
Created by Justin Spitzer (Superstore), American Auto follows a group of executives at an automaker who are trying to re-establish the company’s identity in a changing marketplace. Ana Gasteyer, Harriet Dyer, Jon Barinholtz, Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington, Tye White and X Mayo star.

“It’s kind of amazing. And it’s something that I know myself and the crew talk about a lot as well, just how the show has evolved for us and for Seth over the time period,” says “Late Night with Seth Meyers” director Alex Vietmeier about how the variety talk series has progressed in the decade it’s been on the air. “The conversations are just natural and fluid with the guests, which from a director’s standpoint makes my job very easy because I follow Seth, I go where he goes, and when he’s comfortable and loving every minute of it, it just makes it very easy to sit back and make a show for the people at home to watch and feel that same vibe.” We talked with Vietmeier as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV directors panel. In a taping filmed outside the U.K. Parliament, the Late Late Show’s Corden reacted to the Supreme Court ruling, first reflecting on how abortion was legalized in the U.K. in 1967. Corden noted that it would take nearly 800 elected officials and appointees to change the legalization of abortion in the U.K. and agree that “the fundamental rights of half the population would be endangered in the United Kingdom.”
Corden went on to further address the “heart-wrenching and frightening news.”
“For the past eight years, I’ve been living, working and raising my young family in America. It’s a place I love.

Ruffin opened the show joking that her full studio audience, in the show’s Studio 8G home, were fully vaccinated, wearing masks and “proficient in the cha-cha-slide”.

The second season of “The Amber Ruffin Show” will return with new episodes Feb. 25, Peacock announced Tuesday.
The critically acclaimed late-night variety series is hosted by comedian Amber Ruffin, who made history as the first Black woman to write for a late-night network TV show when she joined the writer’s room of “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in 2014. Ruffin’s own show premiered in 2020, as one of the first originals for the Peacock streaming platform. Over the course of the first and second seasons for the show, Ruffin has used the show to cover breaking topics in the news cycle, including police brutality, Meghan Markle, violence against Asian Americans and the Jan. 6 Capitol riots.
“The Amber Ruffin Show” received a nomination for outstanding variety series writing at the 2021 Emmy awards. The series is produced by Universal Television and Sethmaker Shoemeyers Productions, and Ruffin executive produces alongside Jenny Hagel, Seth Meyers and Mike Shoemaker.

Peacock has picked up a second season of the late-night talk show “The Amber Ruffin Show,” the streamer announced Tuesday.
The decision comes as the weekly talker prepares to wrap its first season, with the final episode set to air on Friday, Sept. 17. However, Ruffin won’t be off for long, with Season 2 set to kick off Friday, Oct. 8.
“We are thrilled to keep doing what we love for another season,” Ruffin said in a statement. “Margaritas for everyone!”
Ruffin, a veteran of NBC’s “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” was one of the first hosts tapped to anchor Peacock’s foray into late night-style programming, along with “Daily Show” alum Larry Wilmore, whose self-titled talk show ran for one season last year. The early success of Ruffin’s show led Peacock to extend her first-season run twice, including a hefty six-month pickup back in March.

The Amber Ruffin Show and A Black Lady Sketch Show have both secured Emmy writing noms for the first time – noticeably helping to improve the diversity of the category.
The Peacock series and the HBO show will compete in Outstanding Writing For A Variety Series against HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and NBC’s SNL.
A somewhat curious note of this category is that Ashley Nicole Black will compete against herself, having been involved in writing on both The Amber Ruffin Show and A Black Lady Sketch Show.
It marks The Amber Ruffin Show’s first Emmy nomination since the weekly show launched last year. However, it is not Ruffin herself’s first nom, having been nominated in this category for her work, alongside her head writer Jenny Hagel, on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Amber Ruffin launched her eponymous late-night talk show during the pandemic and as such has never experienced the roar of her own studio audience.
This will change in August as The Amber Ruffin Show prepares to bring in a live crowd for the first time.
The Peacock show will introduce a fully vaccinated audience starting on August 13, after Ruffin returns from hiatus. The streamer will require all guests to have had their jabs and bring their physical vaccination card to prove it.
Ruffin joins the likes of Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel, who have all started to bring back audiences during the past few weeks. However, Ruffin’s other boss, Late Night host Seth Meyers told Deadline last week that he wasn’t planning to bring back an audience until September at the earliest.

“The Amber Ruffin Show” is swiftly expanding its roster of writing talent, adding Corin Wells and Patrick Rowland to its staff. The hires come after “Amber Ruffin” added three other writers to the mix: Ashley Nicole Black, Ian Morgan and Michael Harriot.
“We have ended up being able to work with some of my favorite writers on the planet,” Ruffin said. “Even though we are this new streaming show, we have a writers’ room full of true heavy hitters of the present and future.”
“The Amber Ruffin Show” premiered in September on the Peacock streaming service with Ruffin as writer/host/executive producer and Jenny Hagel as head writer and executive producer. Both Ruffin and Hagel come from “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” where they also serve as writers and regularly contribute segments.
The show has been an early bright spot for Peacock, and weekly episodes began airing Fridays in late night on NBC.

Lots of unexpected things can happen in the wee hours of the morning. But NBC is keeping at least one element constant.
The network recently renewed its contract with Seth Meyers to host “Late Night,” the post-midnight perennial that has been on the air since David Letterman launched it in 1982. The new pact calls for Meyers to continue hosting the program through 2025. It also maintains an overall deal between Sethmaker Shoemeyers Productions — the production company operated by Meyers and his executive producer, Mike Shoemaker, through the same time period.
“Seth is a rare talent who makes America laugh and think every night,” said Katie Hockmeyer, executive vice president of late night programming for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “His ‘Closer Look’ segments are classic combinations of comedy with commentary. Seth is a brilliant stand-up comedian, interviewer and political commentator. His voice matters more now than ever.”

Amber Ruffin is getting a linear bow for her Peacock late-night show.
The Amber Ruffin Show will air in a 1:30am slot on NBC on Friday February 26 and March 5. It will take the slot of repeats of A Little Late with Lilly Singh, which does not generally air on Friday nights.

This comes as the show, hosted by the breakout star and writer of Late Night with Seth Meyers, wraps up its initial order with shows on December 11 and December 18, including a Christmas special.
“We are thrilled to get the chance to bring you more episodes, because each episode is a new opportunity to have another margarita,” said Ruffin.
The Amber Ruffin Show will return after the holidays on January 8, 2021.
The comedy variety series films at 30 Rock’s Studio 8G, currently without an audience, with only Ruffin’s friend and announcer Tarik Davis for on-stage support.

Conan O’Brien’s departure from late-night linear television after 28 years is shining a spotlight on the sustainability of the nightly format outside of the broadcast networks.
O’Brien, who will end his TBS show in June 2021, is heading to HBO Max for a weekly variety show. It comes after a storied career hosting NBC’s Late Night from 1993-2009, followed by a controversially short tenure on The Tonight Show and the last 10 years spent hosting his eponymous show on the WarnerMedia-owned cable network.
Last month, Conan showrunner Jeff Ross told Deadline that he’s questioned the future of the genre and believes late-night shows are now “kind of dinosaurs in the business,” adding that linear networks are “just like death” due to lower ratings.
The former SNL and The Simpsons writer seems perfectly suited for a weekly variety show on a streaming service, giving him more space for his...

John Mulaney spent several years writing for “Saturday Night Live” when Seth Meyers was a cast member. Now he will spend some time writing for Meyers’ late-night program.
Mulaney has joined NBC’s “Late Night,” which Meyers hosts, as a staff writer, according to a post on Twitter from Mike Shoemaker, the show’s executive producer. Meyers’ show has attracted a number of comedians with strong resumes, including John Lutz, a writer who had a stint on “30 Rock,” and Michelle Wolf. Meyers has given his writers some of the spotlight, sharing sketches with Amber Ruffin and Jenny Hagel, among others. Ruffin now hosts her own program on Peacock, the NBC streaming-video service.
Both “Late Night” and “SNL” are executive produced by Lorne Michaels, and Mulaney has kept ties to his universe of programs. He has hosted “SNL” four times in the past three years, demonstrating a knack for lending...

Photo: 'The Amber Ruffin Show'/Peacock NBC’s new streaming service Peacock is spearheading its stake in Late Night TV with a hilarious, talented, and powerful new voice at the helm, Amber Ruffin. Ruffin brings an incredibly unique and culturally literate perspective that the world, and especially late-night television, has needed for many years. She brings a vast and impressive resume to the role, with appearances on Drunk History and Key and Peele, and writing credits for Sam Richardson and Tim Robinson’s show Detroiters, A Black Lady Sketch Show, and her primary job as a writer at Late Night with Seth Meyers since 2014, where she also became the first black woman to write for a late-night network talk show in the United States. Ruffin is the head writer of Late Night with Seth Meyers, along with her own show with fellow Late Night writer Jenny Hagel, and...

In 2013, after years of scraping by on improv and putting on free comedy shows for the joy of it, Amber Ruffin got what she thought might be her big break. “Saturday Night Live” was (finally) looking to add a Black woman to the cast after years without, and flew Ruffin to New York from Los Angeles to try out alongside many other comedians she’d long admired. “I made all these new friends because it was all comedy Black women,” recalls Ruffin, who had previously performed full-time with Second City and Boom Chicago Amsterdam, among others. “We all came to New York on this big fun trip and had a really nice time with each other.” Ruffin was thrilled with her audition, and crushed when she narrowly missed out on the slot that instead went to Sasheer Zamata. But the experience nonetheless gave her a taste of the kind of...

Amber Ruffin has made her name in late night, becoming one of the most defining and vital voices of “Late Night with Seth Meyers” since its 2014 debut. But even now, on the eve of launching her very own show, she has no problem acknowledging that cracking jokes behind a desk in a suit was never exactly a priority in her comedy career.
“Late night was never a dream of mine,” says Ruffin, speaking recently to Variety from her new office at 30 Rock. “I watched late night, and I loved late night. But you know, you have to see it to be it, and I didn’t see it. I was like, ‘Okay, I hope these white men are having a great time!’ But I never assumed that that might ever be me.”
Fast forward to 2020, when “The Amber Ruffin Show” is set to premiere September 25 on Peacock. After six years on “Late Night,...

If there is anyone who could deliver the worst news in the world with a smile on her face and give you hope that everything will be Ok, it’s Amber Ruffin.
With her sweet and cheery demeanor and a don’t-mess-with-me twist of irreverent shade, Ruffin has written for various shows and her signature comedy has been featured on Drunk History, but she is best known from her work as a writer on Late Night with Seth Meyers. However, we really love her recurring bits on the show including “Amber Says What?” as well as “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell” with Jenny Hagel — which serves as fuel for her own late-night talk show The Amber Ruffin Show, which debuts on Peacock Friday, September 25.
