Actor and activist Mark Ruffalo has spoken to Congress about toxic “forever chemicals” that are contaminating the water, food and personal care products of people across the United States.
He said on Facebook:
For me, Dark Waters is a chance to combine two things I’m most passionate about: storytelling and activism.
It was an honor to stand before lawmakers today with real-life heroes Rob Bilott, Bucky Bailey, Mark Favors, the Environmental Working Group (Ewg), and Nrdc to urge them to take immediate action to regulate #PFAs. Our leaders have the power to do something about forever chemicals, they just need to act. And they need to act fast. You can join me today in demanding action against #PFAs at fightforeverchemicals.com
Together, we can ensure communities across the country receive the safety they deserve.

If you could design the ideal character to assure the continuing domination of Big Coal and Big Oil in America and to reaffirm their faith in their God-given right to cook the climate in pursuit of profit, that character would look a lot like acting Epa Administrator Andrew Wheeler. And the odd thing is, if you met “Andy,” as his many friends call him, at one of his popular Halloween parties at his brick house in suburban Alexandria, Virginia, you would probably think he was a great guy. He’s 53, gray hair,...

Companies are required to submit to the Epa all studies about substantial risk that their chemicals pose to humans. And one of the bests way to study how bad a chemical is for people is to examine exposed pregnant women and their umbilical cord blood. If it can be passed on to the baby, it's bad for you, too.
But an investigation from the Environmental Working Group found that the Epa has virtually no documents with these tests on file. Either the companies aren't doing them (irresponsible) or are doing them and avoiding submitting them to the Epa (potentially illegal).
Consider: In 2003, the Ewg discovered that DuPont held back information from an internal study showing that "quantifiable levels" of perfluorooctanoic acid (Pfoa), a potentially toxic non-stick chemical, were found in eight pregnant workers at a company plant. Facial birth defects were also found on many...

Margaret Pomeranz delivered a powerful keynote speech at the opening of the Spaa Conference yesterday in Sydney, and Encore has the full transcript of her meditation on the state of Australian film and television – and why Government and audiences should appreciate the arts a little more.
I’m extremely grateful to Spaa for inviting me to give this keynote speech today. It is the Hector Crawford Memorial Lecture and I want to honour the man today. Hector put Australian television on the map, he made Australian accents acceptable in the media. Do you remember when we could only stomach New Zealanders reading our news because they sounded more English than us? Brian Henderson was a prime example. But more than that Hector validated Australian writers, Australian actors, directors, designers, a whole Australian infrastructure, Some of those people are still working today. In a very significant way Hector created an industry,...
