Writers from late-night shows including Last Week Tonight, The Daily Show and The Late Show among others are heading to the Primetime Emmys after the Television Academy performed a U-turn on its decision to exclude a key writing category from the main awards.
The TV Academy, Fox and the WGA have reached an agreement to include the Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series category, which also includes nominees Late Night with Seth Meyers and Saturday Night Live, during the live telecast.
The TV Academy, which runs the Emmys, set to air on Fox on January 15, had previously stated that the award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series was set to be handed out at the Creative Arts Emmys, rather than during the Primetime show.
It had been replaced by Outstanding Variety Special (Live) in November.

Maybe you remember reading about the Bishop Sycamore scandal. Originally known as the Christians of Faith Academy, the Ohio-based institution was trying to build a reputation around itself as the next big thing in high school football. Its target demo was, according to someone involved with the recruitment program, “[student] athletes who were good at football — or thought they were good at football — but weren’t going to play at the next level.” Many of these kids were at-risk youth, living in environments that tested their ability to thrive and survive on a daily level.

As Marty Walsh, the former labor secretary under President Biden and current executive director of the NHL Players Association, took the microphone, he grinned at the CBS Broadcast Center behind him.
“Let’s make sure we give them something to talk about in the boardroom today,” Walsh said to a roaring crowd.
That was the tone of the WGA’s sports solidarity strike, a distinct event during which members of some of the biggest unions in the sports world came out to show their support to Hollywood’s two ongoing strikes.
Later, Walsh assured TheWrap that both he and the NHL Players Association stood with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA. “I think a lot of times, if you’re on strike, you’re thinking you’re alone, and you’re not. You have a lot of other union members around the country who support you,” Walsh told TheWrap. ” I’m asking [for the AMPTP] to get to the table,...

The veteran ESPN writer and on-air personality is leaving the Disney sports-media giant — and he’s staying, too. Torre is joining Meadowlark Media, the content company founded by former ESPN chief John Skipper and the sports commentator Dan Le Batard. And yet, Torre is expected to remain a regular contributor to “Around The Horn” and “Pardon The Interruption,” two of the mainstay programs on the ESPN daytime schedule.
“They are looking to build another show directly out of ‘The Dan LeBatard Show,’ which is a monster,” Torre says of Meadowlark in an interview. Torre envisions a digital program with audio and video components that will allow him to “tell original stories, do a bit of journalism and figure out how to make that show a home that can fit all of the things I aspire to do creatively.” Torre...

Jake Paul, former Disney Channel star and now trained fighter, is no stranger to controversy and defending himself in the ring. But in his one-on-one interview on “Game Theory” with Emmy-winning journalist, Bomani Jones, Paul found himself against the ropes looking for someone to throw in the towel. Instead, it was the former Disney Channel star who ended the uncomfortable moment with the slamming of his laptop and a “have a nice f—ing day.”
The interview that started off so well veered off track and into the bushes after Jones’ 12-minute monologue rehashing Paul’s career path from a social media influencer to a trained pro fighter and now the owner of a new sports betting app, BetR. But there was one clip that Jones was not thrilled about putting on display (even though he did) — when Paul knocked out former NBA basketball player, Nate Robinson, in the ring.

HBO’s TV adaptation of beloved video game The Last of Us premieres on Jan. 15. Created by Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin, this story will follow the game storyline of Joel (Pedro Pascal) guiding 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey) through a virus-ridden wasteland towards hope. It’s probably gonna be awesome.
The other big original series this month is animated mystery comedy Velma. Brought to life by Mindy Kaling, this show will be all about Scooby-Doo’s bespectacled buddy Velma Dinkley. Jinkies indeed!
There aren’t any major HBO Max original movie releases this January. The first of the month sees the arrival of Ghostbusters (1984), Hereditary, John Wick, and more. Recent theatrical release The Menu premieres on Jan.

It marks the first major series Comer as she comes off the fourth and final season of Killing Eve.
Big Swiss follows a woman, who after starting a new life anonymously transcribing sex therapy sessions in Hudson, NY, becomes fixated with one of the patients, leading to an obsessive, explosive relationship between the two. Comer stars as Flavia aka Big Swiss.
Comer will exec produce with author Jen Beagin on the project.
Beagin is the author of Pretend I’m Dead and Vacuum In The Dark.

HBO has ordered a new weekly late night series starring journalist Bomani Jones, who will break down timely issues in sports.
Game Theory with Bomani Jones will be produced in New York starting in 2022.
Jones is currently a contributor on HBO’s Back on The Record with Bob Costas and has appeared in the HBO Sports documentaries The Battle for Tobacco Road: Duke vs. Carolina and Runnin’ Rebels. Jones has spent more than 15 years in sports media, most notably at ESPN, where he was the cohost of shows Highly Questionable and High Noon, and the podcast The Right Time with Bomani Jones.
“Bomani is one of the most unique journalists working today,” said Nina Rosenstein, EVP of programming, HBO. “He’s someone who gets that sports stories are often about race, politics, economics and gender, and sees a wider view that goes beyond what happens on the field. We are...

Bomani Jones, the versatile ESPN personality who has gained traction with appearances on shows like “Highly Questionable” and “Around the Horn,” has found a new outlet for his work. But it’s not ESPN. It’s HBO.

Bob Costas isn’t hosting the Olympics any longer, but he’s still having conversations about bigger issues in sports. Not too long ago, with the Summer Olympics in full swing, he might have held forth on NBC. Friday night, he will be doing it for HBO.
Costas returns to the WarnerMedia outlet with a show he says will be much like the ones he did for the service last decade, “On the Record With Bob Costas” and “Costas Now.” Indeed, the new program is titled “Back on the Record,” and the sportscaster says it will try to stay above the hot-talk fray sports aficionados typically get on TV each day.
“It’s not an hour long version of the day-to-day sort of debate that happens all over the dial,” Costas says during a recent interview. “Those have their place, but we are going to be a quarterly show, and...

Exclusive: CAA sports media agent Michael Klein is leaving the agency to form a management company with a specialty in audio and betting.
His client roster, includes ESPN’s Mina Kimes and Bomani Jones as well as Pft Commenter, the alter ego of Barstool Sports NFL writer Eric Sollenberger, will continue to be co-repped with CAA.
The new firm, Silver Tribe Media, will be based in LA.
Sports wagering has been dramatically expanding since the Supreme Court made a landmark ruling in 2018 legalizing it in New Jersey. A number of other states have followed in legalizing betting, and businesses like DraftKings and FanDuel have grown along with the opportunity. Media companies have also jumped aboard the betting trend. With increasing numbers of athletes looking to establish a media presence, Klein sees Silver Tribe as a home for those looking to take that step.

Former ESPN chief John Skipper and Dan Le Batard, the former host of ESPN network’s “Highly Questionable,” are teaming up to launch a new sports-focused content company.
Skipper, who resigned from ESPN in 2017, would remain in his current position as executive chair of Dazn Group but shift focus to daily oversight of the new company, according to the Miami Herald, which suggested that Kevin Mayer, a former high-ranking Disney exec who now is an adviser to Dazn parent company Access Industries, might take over his responsibilities at Dazn.
According to Sports Business Journal, Skipper and Le Batard’s are looking to sell Le Batard’s new podcast, which he launched after his recent ESPN exit, and hire a staff to create sports-focused editorial content for their company, with the expectation that the scope of content could branch out into other topics besides sports.

The purge at ESPN continues, as longtime show host Dan Le Batard will leave the network in January.
The announcement of his departure said Le Batard “will be leaving ESPN early next year to pursue a new opportunity.” His ESPN radio show, The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz, will end Jan. 4. His hosting of the TV show Highly Questionable will finish the same day, but the show will remain on ESPN with what’s described as a “contributing team.”
“It was mutually agreed that it was best for both sides to move on to new opportunities and we worked together closely to make that possible,” said Norby Williamson, ESPN executive vice president and executive editor. “We thank Dan for his many years and contributions to ESPN and wish him all the best going forward.”

From the righteous indignation of Jon Stewart and John Oliver, to Jimmy Fallon normalizing Donald Trump with a hair ruffle, white men are the traditional leaders of the political talk show circuit. However, in an election year when the talking points belong to Black Lives Matter and other issues of civil rights, some networks have decided to reframe the conversation.
Larry Wilmore, host of Peacock’s “Wilmore,” puts it bluntly. “You’ve had your hosts like Arsenio [Hall], or some other Black hosts who did more entertainment-style shows,” he said, “but you didn’t have a show with a Black cast that competed in the John Oliver-type [space] where it’s supposed to be a smart take on the news.”
“Wilmore,” which debuted September 18, is similar to his Comedy Central series “The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore,” which launched in January 2015 and ran until August 2016, a few months before Trump’s election.

“Redemption” is a tricky word. It’s one that comes up toward the end of “Vick” — Stanley Nelson’s two-part, four-hour “30 for 30” profile of former NFL quarterback Michael Vick — though it’s not brought up by its title subject.
In an attempt to provide a full accounting of Vick’s life and career, “Vick” stops short of full absolution or outright condemnation. With a person who’s still capable of inspiring equally passionate reactions — from those who argue for his superiority as a generationally influential football player, as well as those who say his role in a highly publicized dogfighting scandal should negate any athletic legacy — Nelson has made something that looks to address both as thoroughly as possible. It’s an admirable goal, but in this expansive project that winds between moments of insight and moments of redundancy, that pull between two opposite ideas doesn’t leave much room for anything else.

Former ESPN hosts Jemele Hill and Britt McHenry traded barbs over the weekend after Hill accused McHenry of “racism” in a tweet.

Longtime ESPN anchors Sage Steele and Kevin Negandhi are set to combine their experience by taking over the 6 p.m. “SportsCenter” slot on weeknights, the network announced Friday.
Both veteran sportscasters have previously helmed the coveted time slot in the past, which was recently held by Jemele Hill and Michael Smith’s “SC6.”
Steele and Negandhi had previously worked at the same time in the early 2000s in the Tampa-St. Petersburg market — but at competing television outlets.

“The first show I ever hosted at ESPN was the 6 p.m. SportsCenter in March 2007,” Steele said in a statement. “Who knew that 11 years later this would all come full circle. I’m beyond thrilled to be part of the new 6 p.m. team and to reunite with Kevin and so many other great teammates. Onward!”
“I’m excited to get started on Monday and be able to set the table for the night’s biggest games through interviews and conversations with some of the best analysts and reporters,” Negandhi continued. “The 6 p.m. time slot is also a great opportunity to update our audience on what they might have missed throughout the day, and I’m really looking forward to being able to do this with my talented co-anchor Sage Steele.”

Both on-air talents are still with ESPN, with Hill making regular contributions to “The Undefeated” and appearing on shows such as “SportsNation” and “Around the Horn.”

A lot of rain in Louisville and a very muddy track couldn’t dampen the spirits at the 144th Kentucky Derby on Saturday as Justify ridden by Mike Smith won the historic race.
The three-year-old colt trained by Bob Baffert started off Derby weekend as a 5-2 favorite, followed by UAE Derby winner Mendelssohn (5-1), who was aiming to be the first European-trained horse to win the Run for the Roses.
However, Justify handled the soggy conditions with ease to win by 2 1/2 lengths in 2 minutes 4.20 seconds, while Mendelssohn struggled out of the gate and ended dead last.

“He’s got that ‘it’ factor,” Smith said after the race. “He is so above average, he’s got unbelievable talent, and he’s got a mind to go with it. He was loving this stuff. My main concern was getting him out of the gate … He’s so talented, it’s unbelievable. I knew if I could get him out of there, he could go fast because that’s how good he is. Once we jumped well, I basically stepped out of the way and kept a leg on each side and my mind out of the way,” he added.

“I just feel blasted lucky to have a horse like this,” legendary trainer Baffert told reporters in the post-race press conference at Churchill Downs. “This horse came around, the first time we worked him I thought we had something really special. After his maiden win I thought the timer was wrong, I really didn’t think he ran that fast.
“Winning the Santa Anita Derby, we knew how special he was. I couldn’t believe the weather [today], I was feeling really bad. We were ready to head out the gate the moment they crossed the wire. But he broke clean and I knew that he wasn’t going to lay down,” he said. “It’s like having LeBron James on your team, you’d better win a championship with him.”

“The weather” Baffert referred to involved three inches of rain that fell constantly all day, making it the wettest Derby on record — breaking the previous record set in 1918.
By winning the Derby without running as a two-year-old, the chestnut colt also broke the 136-year-old “Apollo Curse,” named after Apollo who was the last horse to perform that feat in 1882. At 52, Smith is now the second-oldest jockey to win the Derby, he last won in 2005 on Giacomo.
Having been run every year since 1875, the 1¼ mile race offers up a winning purse of $2 million — but, of course, the winning horse becomes far more valuable when sent to stud.
Justify will now return to his home stable at Santa Anita, California, before heading to the Preakness Stakes on May 19, which will air live on NBC.

It’s always the right time to listen to the unique voice of Bomani Jones, but now the ESPN host is airing his frank opinions on sports and social issues on a podcast instead of his long-running radio show.
“I think the biggest difference is that it’s more concentrated,” Jones told TheWrap of the podcast that airs Tuesdays and Thursdays. “What we really want to do is take the best of what we were doing before and just kind of trim the fat, give people the best concentrated version of what I have to offer,” he said.
“The Right Time With Bomani Jones” podcast reboot premiered earlier this month and Jones’ upcoming daytime television show with Pablo Torre is set to debut this spring from ESPN’s new Seaport District Studio.

Jones’ new show continues ESPN’s push into the world of podcasts, which includes a “30 for 30” series on yoga guru Bikram Choudhury, plus other recently debuted shows “Jalen and Jacoby,” “Sports? With Katie Nolan,” “Marty Smith’s America” and “The Plug” from Undefeated.
While they’ve still a solid roster of radio and TV shows along with new streaming platform ESPN+, what makes podcasts the new go-to platform? On that, Jones, as usual, had plenty of thoughts.
“If you do a radio show for 15 hours a week, you’ve got to please so many different people because everyone in radio is trying to grab that elusive listener for 15 minutes,” Jones explained, comparing the two formats. “With a podcast, you are dealing with people who are opting in, it is your most dedicated diehard fans and people who are making a conscious decision to walk in the door.”

One way he wants to cater to those diehards is by doing less interviews.
“On the radio show, I would try and do interviews such as with a beat writer for a team as a way to share information on a story and then I would give my opinion on it,” he said. “But we won’t have to do those nearly as much. If we’re coming off an NFL weekend and we’re trying to figure that the games are to talk about, now we don’t have to talk about that second or third game — we can focus on whatever the biggest game was.”

Podcasts are also a “far more intimate medium” than television, Jones continued. “With a podcast, I think it’s really a chance to get in touch with those people who want to be there the most.”
As for why he thinks podcasts have become such as trendy medium, especially since the success of “Serial” in 2014, Jones said it is because anyone can do one.
“Not anybody can do a very good one, but in terms of theory, anyone can set up a microphone, run it into their computer and then go do a podcast,” he explained. “Regardless of whether the person has a public profile or not, they can say ‘this is something that I could put out there for people.'”
Like social media, Jones said, “Podcasts allow a lot of those people just to have regular conversations, and there is a demand that comes from the listener… It makes them feel like they are a lot closer to people who are otherwise untouchable.”
Despite this explosion in podcasts over the last few years, “I still don’t think people know what a podcast is,” Jones marveled. “For me, a big part of putting this together is how it will evolve and for me learning not just what a podcast is but what a podcast can be. The page is so wide open right now, which makes it really attractive to a lot of people because no one is really telling you, ‘this is how we have to do it.'”
Jones, left, on ESPN’s “Highly Questionable”
In terms of topics covered, the boundaries of sports and politics have increasingly blurred since President Trump took office, such as NFL player protests and NBA stars clashing with a certain Fox News host. With a masters degree in politics, economics and business, it is only natural that listeners expect Jones to comment on topical social issues.
“Me going outside of the realm of sports has always been dictated by what is going on in the realm of sports,” Jones told TheWrap. “We had a situation at the end of 2016 and early 2017 where the real world topics were coming up in a way that mattered when came to sports, so we talked about the immigration ban because you had NBA players who were potentially caught up in that.”
As for the new podcast, “I think we will fill the show with sports as much as possible as that’s what people come to us for. But once you are there, you’ve got to take it wherever you need to go to answer a question. If that comes from somewhere else, that’s where I am going to go to, but I don’t think it is effective to ramrod politics into your sports discussion because it doesn’t do you any good to talk if there ain’t nobody listening.”
Obvious exceptions have included when boxing legend Muhammad Ali died, as you couldn’t cover his life story without talking about the Nation of Islam, “which is not the easiest thing to do,” Jones said.
“What makes it a little bit different for me is that I am kinda good at it [talking about social issues]. There are a lot of people that when these issues come up, they look at me as they feel like I am a person who can address them,” he said. “I think in the time that I have worked this job, I’ve managed to do this without having any kind of giant controversy over any kind of observations I’ve made.”

Espn commentator Jemele Hill is currently featured alongside Michael Smith on the talk show “His & Hers.” She pulled out of the contender pool for Bayless’ spot on Twitter, saying that moving to “First Take” would be “not a promotion for me.” Espn radio host and “Highly Questionable” star Bomani Jones also publicly declined interest in the job, saying that he lives in Miami and would not move to New York to do “First Take.” Another Espn pundit, Max Kellerman, has the argumentative style to do well on “First Take,” but is currently involved with the TV show “SportsNation” and the.

11:32 Am Pt -- A rep for Espn tells TMZ Sports, "As the show progressed, we felt Bomani had made his point and had openly discussed why he was wearing the shirt, and we wanted to keep the focus to the topics of the day." A cover-up at Espn ... well, more a like a partial cover-up ... when Bomani Jones was asked to cover up his t-shirt that had the word, "Caucasians" printed across the chest.
