Canada has long had its own stable of music stars, the most successful domestic act being the Tragically Hip, a band that spent much of its 30-year-career headlining shows coast to coast — until cancer recently claimed the life of frontman Gord Downie.
Artists like Michael Bublé, Drake, The Weeknd, Nickelback and Bryan Adams also play arenas around the world, as did Rush before their retirement, but Canada also has a number of acts who can consistently sell out big venues at home.
Some acts choose to play “soft-seaters” for a more intimate experience — for example, Johnny Reid just did 125,000 tickets over 40-plus dates, including multiple theaters in every market — and with Canadian Music Week showcasing the best of the country’s musical exports, here are nine names (in alphabetical order) who consistently headline arenas or amphitheaters in a country whose population is one-tenth of the United States.

Nicki Minaj's rap banger "Anaconda" might not seem like the most likely song to turn into a heartfelt ballad . . . but that didn't deter Josh Ramsay of Canadian pop-rock band Marianas Trench. The singer and guitarist put an alternately funny and surprisingly beautiful spin on the track as part of a cover-song challenge for New Zealand radio station The Edge. Give it a listen and tell us what you think.

Sunday night’s broadcast of the 2013 Juno Awards in Regina wasn't just light on awards — it was light on surprises.
As predicted, Carly Rae Jepsen was queen of the night. She won single of the year for “Call Me Maybe” which actually Was the undisputed single of the year. That never happens!
“I feel so blessed. It’s crazy to think how one song can change your life,” she said onstage. “Kiss,” the career-making record that has plenty more songs on par with “Call Me Maybe,” by the way, also snagged Album of the Year. (Carly Rae also won a Juno on Saturday for Pop Album of the Year, beating out Justin Bieber, who made her career with a few tweets and an adorable viral lip-dub video.)
Backstage, Jepsen was still awestruck. “I’m moved beyond words,” she said. She’s also feeling the weight of the “Call Me Maybe” phenomenon.

If you ever needed evidence of the diversity in Canadian music – or the fact that the Junos can be a bit of an Oprah “You get a car! You get a car! You get a car!” love-in – you couldn't do better than the Juno Fan Choice category, which bundles together Drake, Carly Rae Jepsen, Metric, Celine Dion, Justin Bieber, Leonard Cohen, Marianas Trench, Michael Buble, Nickelback and Hedley.
But let’s be less cynical and instead appreciate an award show that dares break down to a metaphorical cage match between Leonard Cohen and Rush against Carly Rae and Bieber.
That said, both legendary oldsters got shut out of the album of the year prize, despite Cohen's number one debut for "Old Ideas." Instead, the Junos' top category comes off more like six degrees of "Call Me Maybe" with hat tips for Carly Rae Jepsen's "Kiss," her hit song's co-songwriter Josh Ramsay's emo-rock outfit,...

New York — Adele dominated last year's Grammy Awards, but this year there isn't a clear winner in sight.
That's because a slew of acts are up for top prizes, from fun. to Frank Ocean to Mumford & Sons. Those performers are nominated for six trophies, as are Kanye West, Jay-z and Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys.
We here at The Associated Press let you know who to put money on when the awards show airs live Sunday from the Staples Center in Los Angeles at 8 p.m. Est on CBS. Now if only we could agree.

Album Of The Year: "El Camino," The Black Keys; "Some Nights," fun.; "Babel," Mumford & Sons; "channel Orange," Frank Ocean; "Blunderbuss," Jack White.

New York — Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" became the soundtrack for endless viral online fun last year: U.S. infantry soldiers lip-synched to it in Afghanistan's Kunar Province. So did James Franco and the U.S. Olympic swim team. Models from Abercrombie & Fitch showed off their abs to it, as did hair-whipping Miami Dolphins cheerleaders. Dogs have barked the whole song. Parodies of it have been parodied.
Fellow singers from Katy Perry to Selena Gomez embraced the pop goodness.
Even the Cookie Monster jumped on the "Call Me Maybe" train.
The song put 27-year-old Jepsen, who finished third on a season of "Canadian Idol," in the spotlight and on a path to potential Grammy gold. The monster hit is nominated for song of the year and best pop vocal performance at the Feb. 10 awards show.

2012 will be remembered for countless things, but most of these memories will be soundtracked by Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe," a song that pretty much single-handedly reminded everyone why pop music matters.
It's easy to forget in the song's stratospheric rise that, while Justin Bieber may have accelerated its ascent — or, let's be honest, got people to give it a chance in the first place — the song was written, recorded and released well before Biebz and his wunderkind manager Scooter Braun got involved.
It's even easier to forget, albeit mostly because few people ever knew, that the now-classic song was co-written by Josh Ramsay, the emo-haired lead singer of Canadian pop-rock outfit Marianas Trench.
But even if most "Call Me Maybe" fans (or, rather, most people) have no idea about Ramsay's Carly Rae connection, important industry players are now well aware of his role in creating one of...

Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Call Me Maybe' has been named MTV's Best Song of 2012. The global hit reached number one in both the UK and Us and has sold over 6 million copies in America alone since its release earlier this year. "First of all, wow, thank you so much! I have to thank the two other writers of 'Call Me Maybe', Josh Ramsay and Tavish Crowe," Rae Jepsen told MTV. "When we worked on the song together, we were not expecting this year to turn out to be the crazy adventure that it is. Thank you to the fans, my team, my family and MTV - thanks to you!" fun. came in second place with their anthem 'We Are Young', and Gotye is third with 'Somebody That I Used To Know'. Overall, the Recording Academy spread the wealth, awarding six nominations to Fun, Jay-z, Mumford & Sons, Frank Ocean and Kanye West, while the Black Keys, Chick Corea and Miguel earned five nominations each. And the winners of the 2013 Grammy Awards are ... the men. Male artists dominate the nominees in the top categories for the 55th Annual Grammy Awards, announced Wednesday night (Dec. 5).
Topping the list with six nominations each are Jay-z, Kanye West, Fun., Mumford & Sons, Frank Ocean and Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys.
Taylor Swift, whose new album "Red" won't be eligible for consideration until 2014, earned a single nod for Record of the Year with her hit breakup single "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together."
The biggest snubs are teen heartthrobs Justin Bieber and One Direction, who cleaned up at the American Music Awards, and Rihanna. The "Diamonds" singer earned a trio of nods (pop solo performance for her "Where Have You Been," rap-sung collaboration nomination with Jay-z for "Talk That Talk" and short-form music video for "We Found Love") but is Mia from the major categories.

Carly Rae Jepsen has denied claims she plagiarised 'Call Me Maybe'. The popstar is facing copyright claims from Ukrainian star Aza, who insists the Canadian used parts of her song 'Hunky Santa' for her own worldwide hit. "I'm shocked and surprised that these people wanted to sample my lyrics on 'Call Me Maybe'," Aza said in a statement published by E! Online. "They didn't ask me for permission, they just stole it. That's why I filed this lawsuit." Aza has filed legal papers in a Los Angeles court for copyright infringement, listing Rae Jepsen and co-writers Tavish Crowe and Josh Ramsay as defendants. However, a spokesperson for Rae Jepsen has denied (more)...

Like most of America, Vulture spent the summer of 2012 blasting Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" on repeat. We wrote love letters; we campaigned against all other Song of Summer contenders. (We did not make parody videos, because everyone at home had that covered.) So on the occasion of her first full album (Kiss, out today), Vulture could not pass up an opportunity to actually speak with Carly Rae Jepsen — even if she were perhaps a little talked-out after six months of promoting one song. Here are the results of our ten-minute phone conversation. How long did it take to make “Call Me Maybe”?Tavish [my guitar player] and I were kind of on the road together, just kind of jamming it out, and we got the idea to one of our mutual good friends, Josh Ramsay, and he helped us kind of popify it and added those strings in...
