The key to understanding Conan O’Brien’s comedy is knowing that it comes from a point of kindness. Yes, I know in this age of comics punching down, this kind of compliment may leave you with a neon “Must Avoid!” sign flashing in your bleary eyes — but stay with me.
Here is an example. Early in the first episode of his new, four-episode Max travel show “Conan O’Brien Must Go,” Conan — who has earned the right to be referred to by his first name. See: Carson, Johnny — travels to Oslo, Norway. There, he pops in on Jarle, a Norwegian waif of a rapper that Conan had originally met on a segment of his “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast. In the podcast video, Jarle’s hair was combed and he seemed coherent. Then Conan surprises him. Jarle comes to the door, and he’s maybe 110 pounds in a long sleeve T-shirt,...

“Conan O’Brien Must Go” is finally going. The long-in-the-works project, announced last year during Warner Bros. Discovery’s upfronts presentation, has been given a premiere date: Thursday, April 18 on Max.
O’Brien announced the premiere date of the show’s four episodes on Saturday at SXSW, during an on-stage conversation with comedian Nick Kroll.
The “Conan O’Brien Must Go” open is narrated by filmmaker Werner Herzog. “I can not confirm or deny the identity of who that person is,” O’Brien quipped.
“Conan O’Brien Must Go” is inspired by O’Brien’s podcast, “Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan” (in which he chats with listeners from around the globe), and follows the host as he meets up with fans in Norway, Thailand, Argentina, and Ireland. Conaco produces the show, with O’Brien and Jeff Ross as executive producers.
O’Brien said the production would spend between a week and 10 days shooting in a country.

A fresh-faced comedian walks through New York after having woken up and feeding his fish. He's got a nearly beatific smile on his face as he's wished good luck and almost instantly told by those same people (with sarcastic tones) that there's no pressure, because he's been chosen to replace one of the most beloved comedians to ever grace the small screen. He's tall, lanky, with a shock of red hair, and he's just barely reached the age of 30. Everyone from John Tesh to Tom Brokaw to passers-by give him some version of these remarks ("Ya better be as good as Letterman!"), and he takes them all in good stride. He walks into 30 Rockefeller Center, gets ready for his first TV hosting gig, taking over the "Late Night" show on NBC at 12:35 am. He walks into his dressing room, where he proceeds to attempt hanging himself. It's only when...

Conan O’Brien finally said what all intelligent people have been thinking about TBS’ “The Impractical Jokers” for years now. It isn’t very nice.
On Wednesday’s “Conan,” the TBS late-night host mocked his Turner-mates’ popular and long-running schtick during a segment in which O’Brien was supposed to be hashing out human resources issues with his assistant Sona Movsesian.
“How many comedians right now does TBS have?” Conan declared at one point in the highly unprofessional meeting with an actual corporate Hr rep. “Oh right, ‘The Impractical Jokers,'” he added, putting on a defeated face.

When Conan O’Brien signed his latest deal with TBS, he didn’t just agree to keep his late-night talk show on the air for another four years. In addition to hosting “Conan,” he promised to create digital content, podcasting, live tours, and other forms of entertainment.
It wasn’t just an attempt to make more money or keep O’Brien creatively fulfilled after more than two decades on the air, although it has proved to be both of those things too. It was also an acknowledgment that late-night television has changed. Instead of tuning into Jay or Dave or Johnny as part of an evening ritual, most Americans prefer to consume their comedy shows in easily digestible bites the next morning on YouTube.

When Kumail Nanjiani realized he wouldn’t be able to make it to his scheduled appearance on “Conan” last week, he tried to make up for the last-minute cancellation by enlisting “Silicon Valley” co-star Martin Starr to go in his place.
Unfortunately, Conan O’Brien had already moved on with an episode-long bit poking fun at Nanjiani bailing on him, which involved O’Brien’s longtime assistant, Sona Movsesian, and promoting “The Lion King” over Nanjiani’s new movie “Stuber.”
Nanjiani and O’Brien broke down the now-infamous cancellation on Monday’s episode of Conan’s podcast, “Conan Needs A Friend,” with Nanjiani revealing his “Silicon Valley” shooting schedule was to blame for his absence on the TBS late-night host’s show last Thursday.

Kumail Nanjiani finally had his sit-down with Conan O’Brien, a little late, away from viewers’ eyes (but not their ears) and not a hard feeling to be found. Three nights after the Silicon Valley star had to last-minute-cancel his appearance on TBS’s Conan, Nanjiani joined O’Brien on the podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend to explain what happened.
“You are famously a very nice guy,” O’Brien said at the start of the podcast conversation about the cancellation. “You are extremely hard working, you are punctual, this is not your Mo at all. This was something that was out of your control.”
Nanjiani had been booked on the show to promote his new movie Stuber, but was in Marina del Rey taping HBO’s Silicon Valley when, well, let him tell it:
“I was shooting Silicon Valley, and they said they would have me out at a certain time.

Kumail Nanjiani has offered up an apology to Conan O’Brien after the talk show host hilariously called him a “troublesome diva” for canceling his appearance on Conan.
“I’m so sorry Conan,” Nanjiani, 41, tweeted on Friday in response to O’Brien, who wrote, “We had to scramble when @Kumalin couldn’t make it last night, but I think we turned a tricky situation into something really fun.”
During his opening monologue, O’Brien, 56, revealed that just a half-hour before taping, he received news that Nanjiani wouldn’t be able to make it due to being stuck on set for a different show.

Kumail Nanjiani’s last-minute “Conan” cancellation left the host scrambling for a new guest. At the eleventh hour, he filled the spot with an impromptu interviewee — his longtime assistant.
Nanjiani was scheduled to appear on the Thursday night show to promote his upcoming comedy film “Stuber.” Half an hour before the taping, Conan O’Brien received the news. “I was having my pre-show nap,” said O’Brien. “Andy was having his bath in heavy cream, and they came in and they said, ‘Kumail can’t get here.'”
O’Brien brought his assistant of 10 years, Sona Movsesian, to take over for Nanjiani. She commented on the situation, “Oh s—, they really ran out of stuff to do.” Movsesian claimed she was unaware she would be interviewed. But for her, that’s par for the course. “That’s kind of like how my job is just regularly,” she said. “No one tells me anything.

Conan O’Brien has experienced a lot during his 25 years as a late-night host, but Thursday he had a first: Having to do a show without a celebrity guest.
Kumail Nanjiani, who was scheduled to be the guest, ended up canceling 30 minutes prior to the show, well after announcer Andy Richter had promoted his appearance. The reason for the cancellation, according to O’Brien? A scheduling snafu with Nanjiani’s HBO series “Silicon Valley.”
While there were no hard feelings, O’Brien did get a measure of revenge of Nanjiani, who was supposed to be there to promote his upcoming film, “Stuber” which opened on Friday.

Don’t ever say Conan O’Brien hasn’t done anything for you, Sona Movsesian. On Thursday, the “Conan” host helped his assistant buy a new car, and in the end, he presented her with something she definitely didn’t want.
After searching AutoTrader together for everything from a modest Subaru to a totally ridiculous $2 million Bugatti, O’Brien insisted Sona check out what she dubbed a “murder car.” And then he bought it for her.
Listed for $1,000, the TBS personality got a killer deal at $500. Conan eventually presented his longtime employee with the dusty, filthy P.O.S. on television. Done up all nice for the TV cameras and Burbank, California studio audience, Sona wanted nothing to do with it.

Inspired by his exotic trip to Cuba earlier this year, Conan O'Brien decided to hit the road once again, but this time with his beloved longtime assistant, Sona Movsesian, sharing the center stage. Traveling to Armenia with his Conan crew in tow, the excursion was naturally spurred by Movsesian's Armenian heritage and, simply, O'Brien's yearning to learn more about it. What ensued were adventures at Armenian flea markets, a popular soap opera, a rowdy Yerevan Day celebration, and, on a more somber note, a visit to the Armenian Genocide Memorial. Earlier this week, the late-night host and Movsesian talked with friend of Vulture John Horn, host of the Kpcc radio show and podcast “The Frame,” about their trip of a lifetime, their unique boss-assistant dynamic, and meeting Syrian refugees.John Horn: The last time we talked, you were about to air your episode on your trip to Cuba. Did...

Conan O’Brien‘s “Conan in Armenia” episode of his TBS talk show is set to air on Tuesday. In a new sneak peek of the episode released Monday, the host herds sheep, learns a new language and lands a role on an Armenian talk show. He also visits a memorial with his assistant, Sona Movsesian, who is of Armenian descent and has never visited the country. “I think it’s every boss’s responsibility to take their assistant back to their ancestral land,” Conan said when the episode was announced. “That’s why I’m going to make sure...

Conan O'Brien is taking his show on the road again. And by "the road," we mean the road to the airport, at which he'll catch an airplane that will take him somewhere. This time the somewhere is Armenia, the ancestral home of O'Brien's assistant Sona Movsesian. (This will be her first time there, too.) Last February, O'Brien filmed an episode in Cuba that was well-received, both critically and in the ratings. The Armenia episode will air on November 10. Because of the episode, economists estimate, in 2015, Armenia's chief import will be Kardashian jokes. Sorry, petroleum!

On Tuesday, Conan O'Brien introduced "Comedy For DVRs," a segment that is basically a little Easter egg for all of us who do nothing for his Nielson ratings (yet).
The only way to enjoy the joke, you see, is to pause... and pause... and pause.
This inaugural gag was called "Rejected Game Of Thrones" characters and, like SNL's "Fox & Friends" corrections, it's a long list that flies by way too fast to read. Fortunately, we had nothing better to do than painstakingly transcribe the full list, and we're here to tell you, it was worth it.
Watch the clip above, then check out the rejected names below and let us know which are your favorites. Personally, we're holding out hope that one day "Lady Sideboob Of Huffington" and "K.D. Langister" turn up on GoT.

Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop
Directed by: Rodman Flender
Cast: Conan O’Brien, Andy Richter, Sona Movsesian, Stephen Colbert
Running Time: 1 hr 29 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: June 24, 2011 (limited)
Plot: After NBC fires talk-show host Conan O’Brien, he sets off on a cross-country comedy tour, warts and all.
Who’S It For? I don’t watch his TBS show, but I have found the man funny. It will be near impossible for someone who worships Jay Leno to give this movie a chance. More importantly, do you think we could find someone who worships Leno?
Overall
Can’t stop. Nope. He can’t. Not only does this documentary showcase that, it really dives into the concept of a performance. Conan O’Brien bares some scars and is a prime example of how much energy it takes to put on a show, and how hard it is to turn off.

It’s been about six months since Conan O’Brien took back the night with his talk show on TBS, but any fan of his or at least anyone still interested in what happened while he was off the air will want to see this documentary.
The film begins by explaining the controversy surrounding O’Brien’s ouster from NBC that favoured Jay Leno and the resulting ban from television, radio and the internet for six months. From there it chronicles the planning and execution of the Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour and Conan’s energies throughout it.
As my film companion Lindsay from Broken Pencil pointed out before it started, would Can’t Stop be about how Conan can’t stop working, or how he can’t turn off the funny? Turns out, it’s a little bit of both. The doc really tries to show...

Conan O'Brien Can't Stop Directed by: Rodman Flender When Conan O'Brien was unceremoniously dumped as the host of The Tonight Show by NBC last year, as part of his settlement he found himself banished from television for six months along with the rest of his crew. But rather than just taking an extended vacation like any other big star would, he decided to set off on a grueling comedy tour across North America as a way of keeping his crew employed and also as a way of giving back to the fans who supported him throughout the ordeal. Longtime friend and filmmaker Rodman Flender came along for the ride with a camera crew, and what he ended up capturing was somewhat surprising -- not to mention, hilarious. After having caught The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour during its stop in Toronto last year, I was worried that...

As the line that stretched well around the Paramount Theater in Austin finally filed into to see "Conan O'Brien Can't Stop," attendees were asked to pull out a photo ID in addition to their badges, perhaps out of fear former NBC chief Jeff Zucker might want to sneak a glimpse of what very easily could've been one last parting shot over the late night fiasco that left "The Tonight Show" tarnished and O'Brien without a desk job. Ultimately, Zucker's name isn't mentioned once in the documentary, but O'Brien's legion of fans is ever present just as the history books will likely reflect, especially since director Rodman Flender was there to capture the 32-city tour that bridged O'Brien's unceremonious departure from NBC to eventually finding a home at TBS.
