- He was a three-star Army general who retired as one of the US military's highest-ranking Black officers. A veteran of three wars, he received the Silver Star in Korea and Vietnam and was the first Black officer to lead what was then the Army's largest basic-training program, Fort Dix in New Jersey. He was appointed commander of the VII Corps in West Germany, becoming the first Black commander of an Army corps. His other decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, two Legion of Merit honors and two Purple Hearts.
After retiring from the Army in 1983, he led the Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance and was appointed to head the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
He attended Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania on a football scholarship. He graduated from Prairie View A&M with a bachelor's in mathematics, and earned a master's in economics from the University of Maryland.- IMDb Mini Biography By: anonymous
