National Geographic’s eight-part limited series “A Small Light” premiering May 1 tells the story of Anne Frank through the eyes of Miep Gies, the brave young woman who hid the Franks and four others in secret annex above Otto Frank’’s office in Amsterdam from the Nazis who were rounding up Jewish residents. Miep, who worked for Frank, was one of six people who took care of them. She was tasked with supplying them with meat and vegetables. Wrote Anne Frank: “Miep is just like a pack mule, she fetches and carries so much. Almost every day she manages to get hold of some vegetables for us brings everything in shopping bags on her bicycle.” Miep also brought them books.
The Nazis discovered their hiding place and on Aug. 4, 1944, they were arrested and sent to the death camps. Miep managed to save Anne’s notes and journals from the annex...

A new episode of our podcast, Rolling Stone Music Now, spotlights the story of “Walk This Way,” from Aerosmith’s original 1975 recording to their Rick Rubin-produced collaboration with Run-dmc in 1986. The original song’s producer, Jack Douglas, gives a blow-by-blow of its genesis on the episode, while Washington Post reporter Geoff Edgers — author of the deeply reported new book Walk This Way: Run-dmc, Aerosmith, and the Song that Changed American Music Forever — joins host Brian Hiatt to dig deep into the narratives behind both versions of the song. Some guys buy a fancy sports car (lame). Some chase after women far too young for them (double lame, and skeezy). Others get hair plugs (absurdly lame, and gross). But Boston journalist Geoff Edgers found a much less tacky and vastly more interesting outlet for his mid-life crisis: He set out on a mission to reunite his favorite band, long dormant British rockers The Kinks. Fellow Bostonian and filmmaker Robert Patton-Spruill went along for the ride. The resulting film, Do It Again, makes its Austin premiere at Music Monday on Nov 8.
Reuniting The Kinks is a daunting task, especially since Geoff is an American, a journalist (not some music industry mogul), and his only connection to founding members Ray and Dave Davies is that he grew up loving their music. It also doesn’t help that the Davies brothers have been feuding since, well, forever. On his coast-to-coast quest, Edgers...

North by Northeast 2010 is upon us! That means I have ringing ears and a sore ass ahead of me, thanks to the over 600 live music acts and an ample assortment of music themed documentaries that are taking Toronto by storm this week. This is simply a list of things I plan on checking out during Nxne, things that I think my fellow dorks will appreciate. I’ll admit that I’m not as up on new music as some, if you want the real scoop on up-and-coming bands at Nxne then be sure to read Jessica’s Nxne 2010 picks.
We’re barely scratching the surface here though, there is so much to see and do at North by Northeast. Be sure to check out the official Nxne 2010 website for ticket info and the full schedule or just go buy a wristband and get out there and see what you can!

Durham - Once more The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is a four day film festival that plays like it should last a week They show so many films that it’s impossible to even come close to seeing them all. Five theaters are going at once and the only repeats are the award winning movies. It’s hard to pick while going through the schedule. I’ve yet to hear anyone complain about the movie they saw so much as wishing they could have seen two or three of the other ones that were showing concurrently. This is the best festival for documentary film viewers. The 2010 edition kept up the lofty standards with films about basketball, pork, pastries, scoundrels, nomads and undiscovered superstars.

The Italian Film Festival, Scotland
No gimmicks here – just the chance to see some world-class Italian films from directors old and new. From veteran Enzo Castellari, director of the original Inglourious Basterds, comes Eagles Over London, the film that invented the "macaroni combat" genre by dazzlingly recreating the Battle Of Britain. There's also a four-film tribute to legendary actor Vittorio Gassman – Il Mattatore, as he's affectionately known – with screenings of the little-seen swashbuckler For Love And Gold and the original Scent Of A Woman, which won Gassman the Best Actor award in Cannes. More recent titles include director Federico Bondi's Mar Nero, a touching tale of the relationship between an elderly lady and her youthful carer, and Cinema Paradiso director Giuseppe Tornatore's dark, modern thriller The Unknown Woman. And, for the more traditional, there's a screening of everyone's favourite Italian classic, La Dolce Vita.

Getting a hold of this film is like wresting an octopus. You are out-manned, with weird tentacles coming at you from every direction. Although its face is moronic looking, you sense the beast is smart and sneaky. And definitely slippery. Do It Again is a documentary that focuses on a middle-age man, Geoff Edgers, and his attempt to reunite his favorite musical group, the Kinks, a rock group from the British musical invasion of the 1960s. A journalist working at Boston Globe, Edgers is determined to realize his dream of bringing the group together. Wait -- that's a real slacker intro, I need to start over. Do It Again is a documentary about journalist Geoff Edgers slammed by job insecurity and punched by a mid-life crisis --...

The Kinks, to me, were a second-tier rock outfit. That’s not a slight against the band. Several of their hits, from “Lola,” “All Day and All of the Night” and “Tired of Waiting for You” to “You Really Got Me,” became part of pop culture’s conscience. They just never attained the same level of popularity and mainstream success as legendary first-tier rockers The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones or The Who.
Geoff Edgers would disagree. The Boston Globe reporter views The Kinks as one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. And with his 40th birthday fast approaching — the milestone of the mid-life crisis — Edgers sets a personal and professional goal. He’s going to reunite the four original members of the band, including feuding brothers Ray and Dave Davies, who haven’t spoken in years.

Writing about the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, A.O. Scott of the New York Times said, “A festival like this offers a sustained, concentrated exposure to the sheer emotional power of documentary filmmaking, its ability to communicate the drama embedded in human experience. In Durham … you (can) walk into the stately dark of the Carolina Theatre and lose yourself in real life.”
That’s exactly what thousands of audience members hope to do this weekend once Full Frame gets underway. The four-day festival promises to bring more than 100 films – as well as discussions, panels, and good old-fashioned southern hospitality – to a six venues in a four-block neighborhood in downtown Durham.
This year’s program includes new films by innovative director Michel Gondry (“The Thorn in the Heart,” pictured above), Academy Award winners Steven Soderbergh (“And Everything Is Going Fine”) and Alex Gibney (“Casino Jack and the...

Durham, N.C., is enjoying an unusually busy week. On Monday night, Duke University’s men’s basketball team, the Blue Devils, will compete for an Ncaa National Championship against the Butler Bulldogs. Should Duke win, the Southern city likely will celebrate right up until Thursday, when the annual Full Frame Documentary Film Festival picks up the torch and carries a wave of enthusiasm through the weekend.
Full Frame has become an essential springtime stop for documentary film lovers and celebrants of all things cinema. The four-day gathering has become a springboard for recent Oscar winners such as James Marsh’s “Man On Wire” (2008) or Alex Gibney’s “Taxi to the Dark Side” (2007). It’s also earning a reputation for luring documentary heavyweights to the intimate Southern setting, meaning you have a very good chance of bumping into Gibney, Morgan Spurlock, Charles Ferguson, Godfrey Cheshire, D.A. Pennebaker,...

Movie Poster of the Week has been at the International Film Festival Rotterdam this past week, scouting some brand new poster art from around the world. Next week I'll be posting a larger selection of what I've been seeing, but this is one of my favorites and one of the first to catch my eye. Directed by Robert Patton-Spruill, and having its world premiere in Rotterdam, Do It Again documents Boston rock critic Geoff Edgers' quest to reunite The Kinks. A glorified episode of Bands Reunited (which I don't mean disparagingly since I mourn that show's demise), though as much a portrait of the overly optimistic Edgers than of his favorite band, the film features a remarkably accommodating Sting, a wide-eyed Zooey Deschanel, and a marvellously pissed off Paul Weller among its interviewees.
