Deadly Class should’ve lived longer. The gruesome action show, which was produced by the Russo Brothers, lasted only a single season on Syfy. The adaptation of Rick Remender and Wesley Craig‘s comic book series had plenty of style and an ensemble of actors who deserved more than 10 episodes. Actor Benedict Wong, too, wishes the story […]

This article contains spoilers for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Talk about timing! With the conclusion of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+, Marvel wasted no time in revealing the next project that will spotlight Anthony Mackie’s newly minted Captain America. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman is co-writing a currently-untitled Captain America 4 with another Fws alum, Dalan Musson. There’s no director attached, and no other details available just yet, but it does raise some interesting possibilities right out of the gate.
For starters, this probably puts the kibosh on our hopes for a traditional The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2. On the one hand, that’s kind of a shame, because the Disney+ TV format allows more freedom and nuance than a traditional big screen outing does. On the other, it’s great...

Comic books aren’t required reading for fans of Marvel movies and TV shows, but they are a great way to dive that much deeper into the origin stories of the superheroes permeating the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Now that “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” has officially premiered on Disney+, the timing is perfect to catch up on some of the comic books revolving around the dynamic duo. The series’ pilot finds Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) embarking on a new adventure, in the midst of dealing with some personal issues. The six-episode series, which debuted on March 19, is directed by Kari Skogland with Malcolm Spellman serving as head writer.

Humble Bundle is a great way to add some bulk to your digital comics (and games) collection while also doing some good in the world. They offer pay-what-you-want deals that let you divert however much of your purchase you want to charity, and if you spend at certain levels, you get more stuff. Since its inception, they’ve had bundles covering everything from G.I. Joe and Transformers comics to kids books or Top Shelf art books.
The latest bundle covers almost $1600 worth of collected editions from Image Comics, with proceeds being sent to two outstanding charities: the Binc Foundation, the nonprofit helping independent bookstores weather the Covid-related economic downturn; and the Hero Initiative, a nonprofit that helps provide a safety net to comic creators in need. But the question that might jump to mind for an overwhelmed reader is “Is this bundle actually a deal?”

The critics, so far, have a unanimous verdict: “The Last Days of American Crime,” Netflix’s new sci-fi/heist mashup that features scenes of police brutality and other gratuitous violence, is one of the worst films… ever.
The movie, released on Netflix June 5, has a 0% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, which means none of the 26 critical reviews tabulated by the site were positive. Overall, the site assigned a 2.27 out of 10 rating for the film across reviewers.
“The Last Days of American Crime” joins only 42 other films (with at least 20 reviews) to receive the dubious distinction of getting a Tomatometer goose egg, including Netflix’s “The Ridiculous 6” from Adam Sandler, “Gotti” starring John Travolta, 1990’s “Problem Child,” “Staying Alive” (also starring Travolta) and “Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol.”
The consensus is that, with protests nationwide over the police killing of George Floyd, the timing of the movie’s release is a disaster.

Netflix has been bringing us a solid helping of original movies over the last few months. However, it must be said that the quality has varied quite a bit. Coffee & Kareem was pretty terrible, while Extraction was all kinds of awesome. Still, both saw very solid viewing figures. Now, their latest original is available for you to stream and it comes in the form of sci-fi heist drama The Last Days Of American Crime.

It’s hard to imagine that the definitive studio movie about Trump-era authoritarianism would come from the guy behind “Taken 2” and “Taken 3,” but that sure didn’t stop him from trying. Of course, you should never doubt the delusional self-confidence of a man who changed his last name to “Megaton,” just as you should never put your faith in a filmmaker who’s basically the Mr. Brainwash to Luc Besson’s Banksy.
Here’s the thing about “The Last Days of American Crime” — you don’t have time for this shit. None of us do. And that’s not just because Olivier Megaton’s agonizingly dull Netflix feature is 149 minutes long (a crime unto itself). These days, searching for solace amid a global pandemic and nationwide protests, film critics frequently find themselves referring to “the movie we need right now,” lavishing that clichéd description on anything that offers the slightest comfort or context in a world turned upside down. Shakespearean Transformer Olivier Megaton is back with a brand new actioner. The Versailles-born director of Taken 2 and Taken 3 will bring his latest cars-and-shooting movie to Netflix in June, and the streaming service has just released a first trailer for it.
The Last Days of American Crime is based on the 2009 Rick Remender and Greg Tocchini graphic novel, and has been adapted for the screen by Oblivion scribe Karl Gajdusek. It’s got a decent cast, too – The Assassination of Gianni Versace‘s Edgar Ramírez leads the pack alongside Anna Brewster (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) with a surprising appearance from Boardwalk Empire‘s Michael Pitt, who appears to be firing on all cylinders at Full Michael Pitt. That just so happens to be our favorite level of Michael Pitt, so we’ll probably have to check this one out.

What if all crime was made nearly impossibly by a new technology developed by the government? The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will inevitably end with Sam Wilson taking up the mantle of Captain America, as handed down to him by Steve Rogers in the finale of Avengers: Endgame. It looks like Sam’s going to have a bumpy ride along the way though, having to contend with the Us Government preferring John Walker/Us Agent take over the role instead. And then there’s got to be some lingering resentment from Bucky that Steve passed over his oldest friend.
Either way, we can guarantee that Marvel Studios have locked down their design for Sam Wilson’s Captain America outfit, which will presumably be unveiled in the final episodes of the show. But now we have a hint as to what it might look like, as comic book writer Rick Remender has released some early images of Carlos Pacheco’s take on a Sam Wilson Captain America.

Before Ryan Reynolds’ “Deadpool” became 20th Century Fox’s breakout X-Men spinoff franchise, the studio entered development on a superhero movie centered around the X-Force mutants. Fox brought in “Kick-Ass 2” filmmaker Jeff Wadlow to write the script and potentially direct the project. “X-Men” franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner was on board as well. “X-Force” is the brainchild of “Deadpool” creator Rob Liefeld and includes such comics characters as Deadpool, Cable, and the New Mutants. Fox scrapped the original “X-Force” movie in favor of the R-rated “Deadpool” project, but Wadlow hasn’t forgotten his plan to launch an entire “X-Force” film trilogy.
“I plotted out this three-movie arc that took ‘X-Force’ from what it was in the 90s, with Rob Liefeld with a band of kids fighting for what they believe in, and then by the third film, the group basically turned into Rick Remender’s version of the X-Force in the early 2000s,...

We've read a Ton of great comics in the last 10 years, and we picked out the 100 best for you to passionately disagree with.
What a century this last decade has been.
Seriously, the pace of change over the last 10 years has been steadily rising, and has been somewhere between “dangerous” and “murderous” for the last 3, and that isn’t just about geopolitics: the comics world of today is certainly recognizable to a time traveller from 2010, but it would look extremely weird.
- Webcomics and medium press publishers are Everywhere now.
- Marvel has embraced multiple restarts of its line.
- DC has rebooted its universe at least twice.
- Comics are for kids again.
- Nerds rule culture, for all that’s good and bad.
These changes have been catalysts for some very, very good comic books, and we wanted to give you a list of some of our favorites.

Streaming service Starzplay has picked up the UK rights to Syfy’s comic book adaptation Deadly Class. The Lionsgate-backed digital platform will launch the series as a boxset on July 19.
This comes after the Sony Pictures Television and Ucp-produced series, which is exec produced by Avengers pair the Russo brothers, was cancelled by the NBCU-backed cable network after one season.
Set in a dark, heightened world against the backdrop of late 80s counter culture, Deadly Class follows the story of Marcus (Benjamin Wadsworth), a teen living on the streets who is recruited into Kings Dominion, an elite private academy where the world’s top crime families send their next generations. Maintaining his moral code while surviving a ruthless curriculum, vicious social cliques and his own adolescent uncertainties soon proves to be vital. Benedict Wong, Lana Condor, María Gabriela de Faría, Luke Tennie, Liam James, and Michel Duval also star.

The cable network's latest addition is the Deadly Class TV show. Will Deadly Class be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status update below.

Deadly Class season 2 was not meant to be as the assassin school series will now be a one-season wonder on Syfy.
Fans would have liked to get a Deadly Class season 2 to learn the fate of many of the characters that were left hanging in the balance in the season 1 finale. Alas, we'll never know what happened to the captured Marcus and Maria as Syfy has decided not to renew the series for another outing. As a show about a school for assassins, Deadly Class was not the network's usual genre fare, but scheduling it alongside The Magicians seemed like a formula for success.
Also left in limbo were Billy and Petra, who were at Chester's house during the final battle but were seemingly undiscovered. Likewise, Willie, who left the school for the prospect of a better life away from the criminal world he grew up in,...

Syfy has opted not to renew Happy! for a third season and Deadly Class for a second. Both shows are based on graphic novels and both are being shopped. Happy! comes from Syfy sibling Ucp, while Deadly Class is from Sony Pictures TV, which co-produced with Ucp.
After a breakout first season for Happy!, linear ratings for the quirky comedy/drama series, starring Christopher Meloni and featuring the voice of Patton Oswalt, dropped sharply in Season 2. But the hybrid live-action/animated series reportedly has been doing well in its second window on Netflix where it is said to be the streamer’s top performing second window drama, besides You, in key male demos and teens. You also was not doing well in its first-window linear run (on Lifetime), leading to the drama becoming a Netflix original for Season 2. Happy! producer Ucp is shopping the show, and Netflix would be a natural home for it.

Syfy has opted to cancel “Deadly Class” and “Happy!”, Variety has learned.
The former, an adaptation of Rick Remender’s comic book series, starred Lana Condor, Benjamin Wadsworth and Benedict Wong. Produced by the Russo brothers, the series revolved around an orphan who becomes a student assassin at King’s Dominion High School for the Deadly Arts.
Co-production partner Sony Pictures Television will now be shopping the show in an attempt to find it a new home. The show ran for one season.
“Even if ‘Deadly Class’ talks a tough talk about being different and darker than those other high school shows, watching it walk the walk often proves more frustrating than fascinating,” wrote Variety TV critic Caroline Framke in January.
The latter series will be shopped around by studio partner Universal Content Productions. “Happy!”, which ran for two seasons on Syfy, is based on Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson...

The UTA board of directors said Friday that the agency has promoted eight agents to partner, repping a 13% expansion of the group. The promotions come from across UTA’s businesses including theater, music, TV, movies and video games.
The new partners include two division heads — Video Games’ Ophir Lupu and Theatre’s Mark Subias — along with Jacob Fenton, Ken Fermaglich, Susie Fox, Ben Jacobson, John Sacks and Bec Smith.
“These eight individuals from across our business have been a critical part of UTA’s growth over the past years,” UTA said in a statement announcing the news. “Their appointments reflect not just the longstanding contributions each has made, but their leadership, innovation and commitment to creating unique opportunities for our clients.
