Rose Byrne is detailing what it was like getting Dolly Parton’s blessing for Seriously Red and transforming into her Elvis Presley.
In an interview with Collider, published online Saturday, the Insidious star said she drove from Atlanta to Chattanooga, Tennessee to meet with the singer’s longtime manager, Danny Nozell, because “we knew without Dolly there was just no way we could do it [the film].”
“We had to try to get this script in [to] her, and to get her blessing, and to see if she could help us get the music,” she said. “If we didn’t have the music, it would’ve been very different. I don’t know what the movie would’ve become, but it certainly wouldn’t have been a Dolly Parton impersonator.”
Byrne said Nozell, who was a champion of the film, got it to Parton. “Within a few weeks, she said, ‘Yeah, I really love it.

Dolly Parton is the type of celebrity who, the more you find out about her, the more impossible it is not to admire her.
The iconic singer-songwriter has not only been making music since the 1960s when she burst on the scene with her debut album, Hello, I'm Dolly, but she's also dabbled in being an actress, record producer, and philanthropist (her charity donated its 100 millionth book in February). On top of all that, she's also an incredibly savvy businesswoman, which means she's maintained ownership over most of her own songs over the last few decades, which is what allowed her to lend her music to Netflix's latest rom-com hit, Dumplin'.
The film follows the story of Willowdean Dickson (Danielle Macdonald), a "self-proclaimed fat girl" who decides to regain her confidence by entering the beauty pageant run by her thin, judgmental mother (Jennifer Aniston) in her small Texas town.

If you would've told me that a movie about a beauty pageant would end up being one of 2018's most empowering movies, I probably would've had a good laugh. Women prancing around on stage in bathing suits, getting scored for their appearance? Thanks, but no thanks. Fortunately my ideas about the entire process were completely flipped by Dumplin', a dazzling comedy-drama with a Dolly Parton-themed soundtrack so good I could cry. (Full disclosure: I did cry multiple times while watching. No shame.)
