“Eve No Jikan” or “Time Of Eve” is an anime mini-series created by Yasuhiro Yoshiura. It comes in 5 easily digestible 15 minute episodes plus a half hour finale. My first thoughts about “Time Of Eve” go a little something like this: at first glance the artwork is fresh and edgy; the story is easy to relate to, even if it’s been done before; and the two main characters are straight out of your old (or maybe current) high school. Pretty cool stuff.
The concept is simple: man and machine coexist in a society very much like our own. Machines have evolved into androids and must respect Dr. Asimov’s Three Laws*. They now belong to an entire new caste, one that is deemed inferior to ours and are easily distinguishable from their human counterparts because of a glowing,...

The Japan Animator Expo is currently in full swing and man, what a plethora of awesome for animation fans, providing everything from projects from up-and-coming creators to established artists. Today's short is of the later variety.
From writer/director Yasuhiro Yoshiura, whose 2013 Patema Inverted turned out to be a beautiful bit of animated sci-fi very reminiscent of Juan Solanas' Upside Down (only better), comes the rather hilarious Bureau of Proto Society.
Fast forward to the far flung future. Humanity has been relegated to living underground and from the looks of it, no one either remembers or knows how we got there. Every day, the Bureau of Proto Society reviews the historical archives trying to figure out exactly what went wrong.

Among astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson's well-publicized nitpicks about Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity was that a more appropriate title would have been Angular Momentum. If nothing else, it would have freed up the G-word for Yasuhiro Yoshiura's breathtaking anime Patema Inverted.
Fourteen-year-old Patema (Yukiyo Fujii) has lived her life in an underground society of tunnels and caverns. The ever-adventurous Patema flouts repeated warnings not to venture into a particularly spooky area of the underground called the Danger Zone, falls into a pit, and flies up into the surface world.
There she discovers that gravity works in reverse for her and her people. Without the aid of a non-inverted surface boy named Age (Nobuhiko Okamoto), himself a rebel against ...

I came across a clip and trailer for a new anime film called Patema Inverted on io9 recently, and it looked cool enough to share with the rest of you. I've been watching a lot of anime recently, so I'm kind of keeping my eye out for new and different things.
The story follows a princess who lives in the deep subterranean area of the earth. She accidentally falls into a deep pit that leads to the surface world, where she discovers a race of people for whom gravity is reversed, and now she's in danger of completely falling off the planet.
You can watch the trailer for the film below, and to watch the clip, click here. Here's a more detailed synopsis of the film:
If you can't trust gravity, then what can you trust?
An exhilarating tale of star-crossed love and overcoming impossible odds, Patema Inverted is the...

This science-fiction anime may be clunky in places, but paints an intriguing world
Patema Inverted, from fantasy anime director Yasuhiro Yoshiura, is visually striking and plays with some lovely ideas. It's a love story between two teens whose worlds have literally been turned upside-down: a great scientific accident (Fukushima comes to mind) has reversed gravity and created a world of "inverts" who live underground, lest they "fall into the sky" for ever. Invert Patema connects with earthbound Age; if they hold on tight to one another, rather than shooting off in opposite directions, they balance each other out and can actually fly. Could we all find such a way to live with one another? And will they outsmart the villainous ruler of Age's people, who is determined to dispatch "sinner" Patema? The animation is intricate and beautiful but the narrative is clunky and heavy-handed in places. Spirited Away perhaps not,...
