No, it wasn't an exaggeration: Gary, 53, and Mallory Ervin, 24, drove for nine hours before finally getting to Oman's Jebel Shams on The Amazing Race. "It was insane. I don't think they showed it, but I was like, 'Oh my gosh! Nine hours, we could've driven to Disney World from Kentucky!'" the former Miss Kentucky tells TVGuide.com. "I have never driven that long in my life." The elongated detour sealed the father and daughter's elimination, but the duo still managed to keep things close until the end.

Nine hours is a long time to be driving and an even longer time to be lost. Still, I imagine Gary and Mallory made it fun. They proved that a good attitude and a warm smile can take you far; I still can't believe they're gone. I miss them already! The upside of Gary and Mallory leaving The Amazing Race is that I got to talk to them and now we have the inside scoop on the team that surprised everyone.
We're very sad to see you go, you were definitely a fan favorite. Who should we root for now that you're gone? Any teams you formed friendships with and/or are rooting for now?
Mallory: Thank you so much. That makes it all worth it. Gosh, every team left is good ... and we loved Michael and Kevin (but I guess you can't root for them). We loved them all.

On this week’s episode of ‘The Amazing Race’, teams departed Russia for the Middle East and raced one of the longest stages in the show’s history.
“The leg was over 16 hours and that’s not even counting the flight,” Mallory, 25 told us exclusively.
As teams got their clues and headed off to make their travel arrangements to Oman, the newly dating Chad and Stephanie were accidentally sound asleep in their hotel room, clueless they had missed their “Pit Start” time. The lovebirds started a full two hours late but got a lucky break when they caught a flight just ten minutes behind the other teams.
“That’s the only leg of the race where they could have gotten away with that,” says Mallory.
Once the teams arrived in Oman, they were almost neck-and-neck but had to wait their turn to climb up a tower to fetch their next clue.

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
Or, as I like to say, if the story was a movie, no one would believe it because it’s so improbable.
Isn’t that kind of the case with Chad and Stephanie getting engaged and winning the eighth leg of The Amazing Race on the same day? If The Amazing Race was not a reality television show, we would roll our eyes and waive our hands because it was a lame ending. But, this is reality television and despite some deserved skepticism about how “reality” these shows are sometimes, we’re constantly reassured that nothing is manufactured.
Certainly the moment wasn’t manufactured. There’s almost no way for the producers to get Jill and Thomas to illegally pay a cab to let them follow it to the Pit Stop. However, I’m a bit skeptical about how the editing process went to...

Gary & Mallory have become the latest team to be eliminated from The Amazing Race. The father-and-daughter duo finished bottom at the pitstop in Oman on Sunday night after struggling with directions en route to the first challenge and never managing to make up the time. Nevertheless, the pair said they were "proud" to have shared the experience and enjoyed their time together. The episode had opened as the teams were told to fly more than 4,000 miles from St. Petersburg to Muscat, Oman and find a man who was holding tokens. They immediately headed to a nearby ticket office where Nat & Kat and Brook & Claire nabbed seats on the first flight to Oman, while Gary & Mallory, Jill & Thomas and Nick & Vicki booked a flight that landed two hours later. Chad & Stephanie were missing at this point having missed their pitstart time because they had slept (more)...

Here is Sean Furfaro's recap of The Amazing Race, Episode 8.
Last week I pointed out that Nick and Vicki were not forced to do a Speed Bump. One of the commenters here explained that the reason this happened is because the previous week, in the Piano Detour, apparently they gave the correct answer but were told it was wrong. So they ended up being last, even though they should have arrived at the mat much earlier.
While I understand the logic, I think that it was inexcusable that CBS did not offer an explanation for this situation instead of assuming they could sneak this by their loyal, regular viewers. This was all anyone was talking about last week, and it’s insulting that it wasn’t addressed on the show.
For this week’s episode, the teams were off to Oman. Would the long-awaited proposal from Meathead Chad finally happen?...

Last week, I ripped episode five of The Amazing Race, calling it boring and too controlled. I pined for the days of multiple forms of travel, difficult challenges and frequent changes to the race standings.
Apparently all I needed to do was ask for a return to the more interesting days of The Amazing Race’s past and we would get that. This week we were treated to a difficult leg filled with drama, second guesses and a dynamic feel to the entire episode. I joked that “Tastes Like a Million Dollars” would not be sent to the Emmy committee.
If “Run Babushka, Run” were submitted for judgment, The Amazing Race would retake the Emmy for Outstanding Reality Competition from Top Chef.
My favorite aspect of this week was the Detour. Two very difficult choices, but each could be completed quickly. Classic Cinema could have...

Katie & Rachel have become the fourth team to be eliminated from The Amazing Race. The beach volleyball players were the last team to arrive at the pitstop in Norway on Sunday evening's episode of the CBS competition after starting the leg in bottom place and never managing to make up the time. "It was a great experience," said Katie. "We saw so much that we haven't seen before and I'm happy we did it together." Rachel added: "I wanted to race forever." The episode opened as the teams were told to cross the border into Norway and drive themselves to the town of Narvik, where they had to find a gondola station and ride to the top of a mountain to receive the next clue. The order of departure was Nat & Kat, Gary & Mallory, Brook & Claire, Michael & Kevin, Jill & Thomas, Chad & Stephanie and Katie & Rachel. (more)...

Connor & Jonathan have become the third team to be eliminated from The Amazing Race. The a cappella singers from Princeton finished bottom in Sweden after a tight race to the pitstop against volleyball players Katie & Rachel. They had struggled with this week's speed sledding detour - as did many of the teams - opting to switch to the other option of tent building at the last minute. The episode opened as the nine remaining teams returned to the children's school from the previous leg's challenge to help with rebuilding work, before learning they would be traveling 4,500 miles from Ghana to Kiruna, Sweden. Because of limited flights from Accra Airport, every team was given a ticket on the same flight although they didn't have to use it. Connor and Jonathan were the first to leave, followed by Gary & Mallory, Chad & Stephanie, Katie & Rachel, (more)...

This week we got to watch a really great leg of the Race. Not only were there a lot of different challenges, but the order really switched around and kept us on our toes. Some of the teams won us over, some kept their spots on our list of favorites, and some fell way, way out of favor. So let's examine some of the teams' finest and worst moments on this leg of The Amazing Race in Ghana.
The GoodBrook and Claire were actually quite charming, especially when Brook was on the speed bag and said, "Thank you, Coach, I like you" between calculated breaths. I don't know whether I'm just acclimating or if I've finally fallen under the Home Shopping Hosts' spell.Connor and Jonathan and Gary and Mallory managed to keep their positive attitudes, and it put them ahead in the end. From Eastnor Castle, the teams will fly to Accra, Ghana. They will find their next clue at Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. Jill and Thomas, who won the Express Pass last time, head out first and Jill is ready to prove she can do things. The doctors, Nat and Kat leave second, followed by Gleeks Connor and Jonathan, who wait for Brook and Claire. Mean Girls Katie and Rachel leave next, and accompany the Gleeks and the Home Shopping Hosts. Brook uses her sexuality to find their way to the airport. Why, Brook, why. Gary and Mallory, who are impossible to hate, leave next, followed by Michael and Kevin. The unforgettable Chad and Stephanie leave next, followed by Andie and Jenna. Nick and Vicki, who are just lucky to be here, bring up the rear.
The leads any teams got mean nothing, however, because there's only one flight to Accra, which will even everything out.

Season 17 of The Amazing Race takes off in Gloucester, Ma. Right away we meet our 11 teams, Brook and Claire (the home shopping hosts), Chad and Stephanie (the fast movers), Katie and Rachel (the volleyball players), Connor and Jonathan (the Gleeks), Nat and Kat (the doctors, Stat!), Michael and Kevin (the asian sensations), Nick and Vicki (the tattooed dimwits), Ron and Tony (Broadway BFFs), Jill and Thomas (the . . . normal couple who is perfect for this show), Mallory and Gary (Miss Kentucky and Dad Kentucky), and Andie and Jenna (the biologically reunited). And our host, Phil, who kind of looks like a vampire, but only because that's popular these days.

Those who will travel thousands of miles around the world in "The Amazing Race" season 17 have been unveiled. Eleven teams are comprised of among others; beauty queens, YouTube sensations, a capella singers and doctors.
But the one with the most interesting background story would be stay-at-home mom Andie DeKroon who is only reunited with her 21-year-old daughter Jenna Sykes. Andie gave up Jenna for adoption when she was still a baby. "I hope to get to know my birth mother through this incredible opportunity," Jenna said in her official CBS bio. "It is my hope that we will be able to spend a lot of time together and become friends."
Another notable pair is Michael and Kevin Wu who are father and son. Kevin at 20-years-old is officially the youngest contestant in "Amazing Race" history. But he is better known as the YouTube sensation who has over 1 million subscribers on his channel.

It was a nod to the new and not much of a sendoff to the old that best describes the selection of 500-odd contenders for Emmy statuettes unveiled before dawn Thursday by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
The spunky Fox comedy-musical "Glee" and the off-kilter comedy "Modern Family" -- also produced by Fox but airing on ABC -- muscled their way into the key nomination categories, leading a number of fresh entrants into what in recent years had become a predictable parade of Emmy hopefuls.
Those two and several other mainstream newcomers to the fray also helped rebalance the scales between broadcast network fare and cable contenders, with the former contingent coming away with 247 total noms to cablers' 240.
The unflinching World War II mini "The Pacific," racked up the most noms for a single entry with 24, but its only competition is a well-mannered British period piece called "Return to Cranford...

Good news for Patrick Warburton fans; disappointing news for Jenna Elfman fans. And if you have a deep affection for Jeremy Northam, this should make you happy, too. Confused? Don't be. I'm just laying out the essence of the CBS midseason juggle.
On Mondays, beginning February 1, Accidentally on Purpose will be shelved... but only for a few weeks. Taking the 8:30 Monday slot will be the return of Patrick Warburton, the best thing in Rules of Engagement.
That's not all. On March 31, the 8:30 slot in which Gary Unmarried airs, will be assumed by Accidentally. That's not because Gary's being canceled; it will have completed its season order by then.

You know, I never really considered myself a couch potato, but as I post this update the truth is becoming increasingly difficult to hide from, especially from myself. I find myself following so many different shows, many of them reality series, that I often have trouble remembering which contestants were eliminated from which show. This week on "The Amazing Race", the ninth episode of the seemingly forever running show's fifteenth season, Gary and Matt were eliminated. The two couldn't overcome the obstacles on time and of course wound up coming in last place. Be sure to tune in next week as we'll update you with the next two eliminated contestants.

Father and son Gary and Matt Tomljenovich might have made the final four of The Amazing Race if not for a Speed Bump and getting tripped up by vocabulary. (Note to Matt: a "candelabra" is not an Estonian man downing beer). The partners, ages 47 and 22, say they were actually better than they looked on TV. "They made it seem like we took a while at the Roadblock, but we didn't," Gary tells TVGuide.com. "Once he figured out what a candelabra was, we got out of there pretty quick. We actually made up time when we got to the mat." By how much did they miss a semifinal spot? Find out below — and see what team they worked alongside.

The final five teams crossed the Baltic Sea to explore Estonia on Sunday's The Amazing Race. Things got heated -- and not just on the sauna bus -- as brothers Dan and Sam engaged the Harlem Globetrotters in a foot race to the pit stop. Here are a few dos and don'ts as the Race's end draws near. --Carrie Bell 1. Get a taxi at any cost. All-Americans Meghan and Cheyne cut off a cabbie in the middle of the road to get directions to the ferry. Mr. America Brian, who hung out the window and waved his arms, said he was "lassoing taxis." And when the two teams spotted a cab simultaneously, Mr. America let the other team take it but asked their driver to call for another cab. As their cabbie was going to make the call, the All-Americans told him to forget it. "We don't care about them,...

What goes through your mind when you think of European travel? A secluded café in Paris? A walk on the streets of foggy London? A cold stein in a Berlin beer garden? A romantic boat ride down the Venetian canals? Whatever your exotic fantasy, it fits two criteria; it resembles a Price Is Right showcase, and it involves the western half of the continent.
For whatever reason, the tourist appeal of Europe inexplicably seems to evaporate somewhere within the borders of Austria. Adding to general disinterest, the media depicts this eastern region as destitute, backwards, decrepit, and just plain bleak. Perhaps a backhanded jab towards the Cold War and the areas behind the Iron Curtain, nobody gives Eastern Europe the glory it deserves. Except, of course, for The Amazing Race, which compresses the cultural identities of Estonia and several other nations into brief 44-minute snippets, consisting mostly of airports and taxi interiors.

Saved from being sent home last week through the non-elimination round, Gary and Matt cannot keep up with "The Amazing Race" this week. The father and son duo had to perform an additional task for coming the last in the previous leg, spending five minutes inside a Sauna Buss in Estonia before they can perform the Road Block.
All teams actually started at the same time because the boat that took them to Tallinn was so late that they all ended up on the same spot. But once there, Gary and Matt had to perform the speed bump while the others moved on with the Road Block. Here, teams were required to travel to Mustpeade and one member must dash to the cellar to acquire a candelabra and an empty scroll inside a room. The scroll contained clue written in invisible ink which will be visible by holding it near the candle.

Last week's The Amazing Race marked the return of that infamous Roadblock back in season 6, with the hundreds of hay bales and the flags rolled on, say, three percent of the flags. While the first time around someone was stuck there for ten hours, this time around, there wasn't that much of a struggle--although that doesn't mean Gary and Matt would have a hard time this time around, especially since it's a non-elimination leg and they have a lot to do this time if they're to survive.
Here's the deal. Flight Time and Big Easy left the pit stop first, at 2:23am. The next team out, Meghan and Cheyne, left at 4:12am. Gary and Matt left at 6:29am. Four hours behind? Daunting, I know. But circumstances were on their side, really. The teams are headed to Tallinn, Estonia, and they'll go there via ferry across the Baltic Sea,...

This recap of The Amazing Race is sponsored by Travelocity. Travelocity: You’ll never roam alone.
Sweden. The lovely Scandinavian nation known for meatballs, candy fish and unassembled, wobbly furniture was the locale for this leg of the race. The five remaining teams departed for the peninsular nation from The Netherlands, seeking out an amusement park named Tivoli Gröna Lund. This may be culturally insensitive, but Swedish is a hilarious language. Every single word sounds like a Steve Martin joke. Even when I watch Fanny & Alexander, all I hear is the chef from The Muppet Show.
Instructed to leave the airport and travel to the amusement park by rail, we encounter the first of many problematic nuisances: an automatic ticket machine. Anyone who travels via public transportation knows the complicated procedure of deciding which tickets to purchase, how many, how to validate said tickets, and how to do it all...

Tonight on The Amazing Race, the twelve remaining racers departed from the sweltering desert heat of Dubai for the chilly Atlantic winds of The Netherlands. All six teams departed, rushing to the airport like extras in a Godzilla movie before being brought to a screeching halt at the local airport, as the direct flights between Saudi Arabia and Amsterdam were fewer than anticipated. But soon, after eleven hours of waiting, the six teams were off to the nation stereotypically renowned for pickled herring, wooden shoes, and bicycles. But surely, none of these would actually appear on a show so centered on global culture and understanding.
After departing Amsterdam by car for the lesser-known city of Groningen, the teams faced their first challenge: counting the number of bells in Martini Tower, an iconic cathedral. This is the kind of excitement only possible from a seven-time Emmy Award winning series.

The Amazing Race. Its name alone incites images of a grandiose adventure. It’s not just An Amazing Race, it’s The Amazing Race. A name that drives home the necessity of commitment and tenacity like a big-league slugger pumped full of steroids. The Race isn’t easy, and it is not for everyone. If you have difficulty running for long periods of time, the race is not for you. If you cannot handle yourself under pressure, the race is not for you. If you have an irrational phobia of an everyday circumstance, such as water or heights, the race is not for you. You either bring your A-game, or you stay home like the rest of us and yell at the TV.
Tonight’s episode began in Dubai, UAE. A city so massive, metropolitan and modern, if you listen closely, you can actually hear The Lorax weeping in the distance.

The only engaged couple on "The Amazing Race" this season has been kicked out of the competition after arriving last in the fifth leg. On Sunday, October 18 night episode, viewers witnessed Lance and Keri getting lost in Dubai although all teams started at the same point at the same time.
All the eight remaining teams embarked on the same plane from Cambodia to United Arab Emirates. They were quickly directed to an under-construction hotel which is expected to be the world's tallest building. Teams were to grab the clue from a balcony and head back downstairs. While others drove to Desert Reserve to perform their first challenge of the day, Meghan and Cheyne chose to do the season's first Fast Forward.
One member of the team who chose Fast Forward must complete a race track at Dubai Autodrome in 45 seconds or less. Cheyne completed the race with no difficulty and...

One more team was eliminated last night on "The Amazing Race", all due to one crucial mistake, losing the passport. Friends Zev and Justin got the irony when they were leading the race at number one and went straight to the last place after Zev lost his passport along the way. The document is one important factor to commence with the race and without it, the team has to be disqualified.
The nine remaining teams made their flight from Vietnam to Cambodia this week with all of them getting on the same plane. The first clue was given in the form of a photo of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Teams must find a hotel suite named after the celebrity whom many surprisingly didn't recognize. Then came the Detour, Cover and Wrap. In the former they could sell helmets on the street while in the latter they could go to a market...

Despite a psychic predicting success, photographer Marcy Malloy, 60, and stock trader Ron Shalita, 59, were the third team eliminated from The Amazing Race. While they don't have a $1 million prize, the San Francisco-based couple talked to People about the other ways the show enriched their lives. --Carrie Bell We thought you'd be the senior team that finally won. What went wrong? Ron: Interestingly, it was not a function of age at all. We chose a test no one else did and I think it took longer and logistics went wrong. We were stuck in traffic. The driver didn't know where the Reunification Palace was even though its picture is on even the most rudimentary map like the Empire State Building. They must call it something else. Marcy: I think it was getting to the VCRs that killed us because the driver dropped us off a half mile from the...

The season premiere of The Amazing Race saw Lisa and Eric eliminated before they even started, while newly-engaged Jessica and Garrett were the first team to get the axe on the actual race. This week's action started on board the Bassac III as the teams sailed from Cai Be, Vietnam to an unknown destination for the next round of challenges. Challenge One - The Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theatre Gary and Matt are the first team to depart the boat, having arrived at last week's pitstop first. They are told to head to Ho Chi Minh City by taxi and find the Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theatre, where they must grab the next clue from the mouth of the water dragon inside. Sam and Dan depart shortly after, followed by Harlem Globetrotters Flight Time and Big Easy. The latter reveals that he is still mourning the loss of his father...

This week on "The Amazing Race", the remaining teams embarked from a literally moving pit stop. The leg started from Vietnam's Mekong Delta, where all the contestants were inside a local boat and they were heading to a city called My Tho. Gary and Matt were first to depart and they were instructed to go to Ho Chi Minh City where they should find a puppet theater.
The teams quickly called a cab to reach the destination except for Lance and Keri who had an argument first whether or not they were already in Ho Chi Minh. Upon arrival, teams had to grab a flag containing their next clue from the mouth of a dragon puppet bobbing on water. The clue directed them to a local post office.
In the Detour round, they had to choose between Child's Play or Word Play. In the former, teams must move an animal...

The poignant second episode of The Amazing Race 15 opened with a moving pit stop. Literally. The riverboat where contestants enjoyed their first mandatory rest period had traveled to a new destination: the Mekong Delta, which saw heavy fighting between Vietcong and the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. With that history, emotions were sure to run high during this leg. Read on to find out why this episode was also a touching tribute to fatherhood... The first team to depart, Gary and his son Matt, were instructed to take a cab to a dragon water puppet theater in Ho Chi Minh City. Gary grumbled that Matt should respect his "older and wiser" perspective, but Matt resisted, saying, "It kind of...

Last week on The Amazing Race, Eric and Lisa got tossed before the start of the race, and Garrett and Jessica got tossed after being stuck herding ducks in Vietnam. Oh, and most of what we thought of the teams didn't really hold.
We start in the Mekong Delta, where the pitstop--a local boat--traveled to the town of Meto with everyone inside! A nice way to have everyone race without them knowing--and a nice way to disorient the racers. From there, they have to head to Ho Chi Minh City, specifically to a puppet theater where the clues are attached to the mouths of dancing dragon puppets in the water. Gary and Matt start first, and everybody else look for taxis, except for Lance and Keri, who are convinced that they're in Ho Chi Minh already. Argument along the way. But of course.
