Coco Gauff's coach, Brad Gilbert has given one principal reason for the teenager's historic US Open triumph.
Gauff has recently admitted that she felt she needed to win a Grand Slam as a teenager. Last year's US Open represented one of the final opportunities for the American to achieve that dream.
Veteran coach Gilbert joined Gauff's team in August 2023. He has previously worked with big names such as Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, Andy Murray and Kei Nishikori. Agassi won 6 of his Grand Slams under Gilbert's guidance.
Gilbert received much praise for his role in Gauff's triumph at Flushing Meadows. Although all the other current and previous members of Gauff's team also deserve a lot of credit for their roles in her development to that point, Gilbert did seem to help the teenager's mentality.
Now, Gilbert has spoken about his work with the US Open champion. As well as confirming...

Kei Nishikori has learned to "accept" his injury situation as he plots another comeback from injury next season.
Nishikori, who turns 34 in under two weeks, has announced that he will miss the 2024 Australian Open, which is set for a historic Sunday start next season. The former US Open finalist is still troubled by his knee injury at the Atp 250 event in Atlanta last July.
Back then, Nishikori was still in the early stages of his comeback from a truly horrifying hip procedure in February 2022 in which some of his bones were trimmed.
Nishikori revealed in an interview at the time that it was the most feasible surgery that prevented him from undergoing hip resurfacing surgery like the one Andy Murray did to extend his playing career.
After healing, he sprained his ankle, which delayed his return in 2023 until the summer, when he played on the Atp Challenger Tour. Nishikori won...

Kei Nishikori won't play in the 2024 Australian Open as he reckons he won't be fit ahead of schedule and will target a February or March return.

Despite having high hopes of returning to tennis back home in Japan, Kei Nishikori abandoned plans to play in the Yokkaichi Atp Challenger event.
Nishikori has been battling injury setbacks for weeks now as he hoped to find some playing time before the end of the year. He actually made his comeback earlier this year, winning the Atp Challenger event he played upon return.
He also won his first Atp match at the Atlanta Open later, but since then, he largely struggled to remain in playing conditions as his injury curse continues to take its toll.

After continuing his fabulous play in Shanghai, Ben Shelton will go further East to Japan for the 2023 Japan Open , where he'll play native player Taro Daniel in the opening round.
The Japan Open won't see Kei Nishikori defend the 'Hinomaru' flag, but it will see Taro Daniel do that as he's one of several Japanese players in the draw.
Daniel had to earn his place in the draw by playing in the qualifiers, and he did well, winning two solid matches. His reward is playing Ben Shelton, which isn't a reward at all.
Daniel is a respectable competitor, so he'll enjoy playing back at home; however, it's likely that his campaign will end against Shelton. The American has been on fire recently , demonstrating his qualities at the Shanghai Masters recently.
He's poised for a similar run here because the conditions should benefit a player with his skillsets. So how will it go?...

Washington, Aug 1 (Ians) Frenchman Gael Monfils collected just his second tour-level win of the season and the first since the French Open when he defeated American Bjorn Fratangelo in the first round of the DC Open.
The former World No.6 won 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets against Fratangelo in Washington, D.C. on Monday night.
Staying way behind the baseline, the 36-year-old Monfils used his speed and athleticism to build a defensive wall that the 30-year-old Pittsburgh native was unable to penetrate on his 2023 main-draw tour-level debut.
En route to his 527th match win, Monfils also delighted fans with two signature slam-dunk smashes, according to a report on the Atp website.

Taylor Fritz is in the Atlanta Open final after beating compatriot Jeffrey John Wolf in straight sets.
The highest-ranked American on the Atp Tour has had a fair season so far, but we haven't seen his best often this year. It's been somewhat disappointing as Fritz didn't really make a huge step forward though there is still a chance for him to do so.
It's the North American stretch, and the Americans are expected to do some damage, with the Atlanta Open being the first event on Fritz's calendar. It's going well for him as a win over Kei Nishikori sent him into the semi-final , and now a win over Wolf sees him going to the final.

Carlos Alcaraz is the player everybody on the Atp Tour wants to play and beat, as Kei Nishikori added his name to that list.
Nishikori hasn't played on the Atp Tour in a very long time, but he recently made a winning comeback to the Tour after scoring a few good wins on the Challenger Tour. It took the Japanese player a long time to come back from injury, but he managed to get it done, and it worked out well for him so far.
There were many reasons why he wanted to come back, one of which is just to challenge himself once more as a player. He believed himself good enough to still win, and that seems to be the case judging by his level upon returning. Another reason to come back was his desire to try himself against some of these youngsters like Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune,...

Taylor Fritz overcame Kei Nishikori in a blockbuster quarterfinal clash of two players that made it to the Top 10 on the Atp Tour at the 2023 Atlanta Open .
Former world no. 4 from Japan is back, and he suddenly became a threat to anyone and an opponent that players will want to avoid early in the draw. Two players didn't manage to do that as Nishikori cruised comfortably in his opening matches , but that was only until he met Fritz in the quarterfinals.
Coming off a final loss from Los Angeles, where he competed at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown , the top seed in Atlanta had enough motivation to do that, and after avenging the final loss from Uts to Yibing Wu already in the second round, the top-ranked America in the Atp Rankings faced probably the most experienced player left in the draw.

The 2023 Citi Open in Washington is one of the Atp 500 tournaments that offers a 64-man draw , and thanks to that also many interesting matchups.
Running from July 31st to August 6th, the 2023 Citi Open in Washington, also called the 2023 Mubadala Citi DC Open, will be held without the defending champion as Nick Kyrgios was forced to withdraw from the tournament .
He wasn't the only one as projected top seed Daniil Medvedev also pulled out , and Denis Shapovalov also announced his withdrawal . But even despite these withdrawals, the tournament still has a lot to offer.
With many American players in the draw, Taylor Fritz is seeded first, and like all the first sixteen seeded players, he has a Bye in the first round, focusing on his second-round match-up. For the highest-ranked American in the Atp Rankings , that will be a match against either a qualifier or Max Purcell.

Kei Nishikori and Elina Svitolina are among the list of wildcard entrants for the 2023 Citi Open in Washington.
Nishikori is one of the most high-profile Atp wildcard receivers after the competition posted a list of players to gain entry into the 2023 edition on its official Twitter channel . The former world number four has recently been building form and fitness at the Challenger level and won his first competition in 20 months at the Palmas Del Mar in June.
However, the 33-year-old will be joined by other former top ten Atp players Gael Monfils and Kevin Anderson . Moreover, 23-year-old Andrew Fenty, who was born in Washington DC, will also participate in the men's qualifying draw.
The Citi Open wildcard announcements come after some high-profile men's players withdrew from the 2023 competitions. Most notably, world number three Daniil Medvedev pulled out of the tournament recently , but the reasons for his omissions are not clear.

Kei Nishikori played on the Atp Tour for the first time since October 2021, and he is already off the mark.
The Japanese star defeated Australia's Jordan Thomspon 7-6, 7-6 to progress into the Round of 16 at the Atlanta Open . Nishikori geared up for his comeback by playing in three Atp Challenger tournaments in recent weeks in order to sharpen his fitness and refine his game.
Nishikori spent the entire 2022 season recovering from career-threatening hip surgery . And when he was getting ready to return in January this season, he suffered a freak ankle sprain at the back end of last year, setting him back another five months.
But patience has finally paid off as Nishikori made a splendid return at the Palmas del Mar Challenger last month, winning not just his first match in over 18 months , but the tournament. He didn't set the world alight in his next two tournaments on...

Kei Nishikori is taking his gradual comeback one step at a time, but the former Atp Top 10 regular is also taking inspiration from the world's best.
Nishikori was out of the professional game for 20 months following hip surgery and the former US Open finalist made his long-awaited return at the Palmas del Mar Challenger in Puerto Rico in June. The Japanese player soon showcased his talent and won the Challenger event and dropped just one set en route to the title.
Although Nishikori has yet to emulate his initial success after early exits at the Cranbrook Tennis Classic and Chicago Challenger events he is still aiming high. When speaking to the official Atp website , the 33-year-old explained how watching Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and some of the younger players kept him motivated to come back when he was recovering from injury.

The 2023 Atlanta Open promises to once again showcase the best hard-court action at the Atp 250 event from July 24th to 30th.
Every year, some of the best hard-court players come to Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States, and the tournament, which was founded back in 2010, could be also described as an event of Americans and Australians.
That's because of one simple reason, as since its start, a player of no other nationality has managed to win the title. Moreover, only four non-American or Australian players contested a final, and fans in Atlanta are hoping that it won't change in 2023, as players will fight for their share of $737,170 in prize money .
Last year, Alex de Minaur had a very good run in Atlanta , which he ended with a trophy. This year, the entry list for the 2023 Atlanta Open also features a lot of talent, as Taylor Fritz , Ben Shelton , and Alexander Bublik...

Kei Nishikori made his return to tennis after a long absence due to a hip injury that required surgery and it was a grand entrance.

Novak Djokovic 's Roland Garros triumph has him at the top of the Atp Rankings for another week extending his previous record.
Some time ago Novak Djokovic became the player with most weeks spent at number one in tennis when he replaced Steffi Graf as the leader in that regard. He has been at the top of the rankings for 389 weeks now which is fairly close to 400 weeks and that pops on a page far better than 3xx. It's something he's been backed to do and so far it's looking good.
He's at the top today, ahead of Carlos Alcaraz and the rest of the field. He's not certain to be number one next week too, because the Spaniard can dethrone him if he pulls together an impressive run at Queen's Club and wins the trophy.

Kei Nishikori returned to tennis and it was a really triumphant return for the former World No. 4.
After previously announcing his comeback in 2022 , and postponing it multiple times , Nishikori finally made his comeback at an Atp Challenger 75 tournament called the 2023 Caribbean Open in Palmas Del Mar in Puerto Rico.
The Japanese player entered the tournament thanks to a wild card, but quite soon it was obvious that he will be one of the favourites at the tournament, despite facing a tough opposition of some talented players.
In the first round, Nishikori easily cruised past Christian Langmo, winning 6-2, 6-4. His biggest challenge, at least result-wise, came in the second round when the former World No. 4 needed to come back from a one-set deficit, beating the seventh-seeded Mitchell Krueger 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Kei Nishikori has declared that he intends to make a competitive return to action on the Atp Tour this year, after a very long spell away from the sport.
Once Japan's prime representative on the Atp Tour, Nishikori established himself as one of the game's very best when he rose to a career-high ranking of World No. 4 and reached a Grand Slam final in New York.

Paris, June 7 (Ians) Sixth seed Alexander Zverev thrashed Kei Nishikori in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 to enter French Open quarter-finals here at Roland Garros late on Sunday.
This was German Zverev's fifth win over the Japanese and his 16th win in the clay-court Grand Slam event.
Zverev, who defeated the likes of Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Matteo Berrettini on way to victory in Madrid Open last month, was in impeccable form as he did not allow Nishikori to get into a position of challenging him.
Coming into his fourth round match, Nishikori had won two five-setters. However, he struggled to take the German to the distance.
Zverev, who became only the second German after Boris Becker in the Open Era to reach French Open quarter-finals thrice, hammered five aces against Nishikori and won 73 percent of his first service points against 61 percent by his opponent.

Paris, June 7 (Ians) Despite his impressive form on clay that saw him beat Kei Nishikori in straight sets in fourth round of French Open, and win Madrid Open last month, sixth seed Alexander Zverev is not taking anything for granted as he focusses on the last three matches and take aim at his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros.
"I hope I continue playing the same way I did in this match. Maybe even better. Now we are in the quarterfinals, there is only eight of us left, and the opponents are not getting easier. You need to perform at your best, play at your best," Zverev said after beating Japan's Nishikori 6-4, 6-1, 6-1.
"Hopefully I've got three more matches left here," he added.
"No matter who you are playing, they already won four matches. I am looking forward to that, of course. I know it's not...

Updated, May 31: The standoff between Naomi Osaka and the French Open over her refusal to participate in post-match press conferences came to a boil today. The tennis superstar announced that she has withdrawn from the tournament.
The move comes a day after Osaka won her opening match and was fined $15K and threatened with disqualification. That’s after she followed through on her pre-tournament statement and skipped the mandatory post-match presser. In her statement announcing her withdrawal, Osaka revealed “long bouts of depression” since her breakthrough 2018 US Open win.

Lausanne, May 15 (Ians) Tennis legend Roger Federer said on Saturday that athletes around the world were waiting for the Tokyo Olympic Games organisers to decide whether the sporting extravaganza "will go ahead or not" due to the evolving global Covid-19 situation.
The Olympics are scheduled to be held between July 23 and August 8.
"The athletes need a decision: is it happening or isn't it?" asked Federer, who is the joint record holder with Spaniard Rafael Nadal for winning most number of Grand Slam singles titles at 20 apiece.
"It's [the Olympics] difficult. Honestly I don't know what to think. I would love to play in the Olympics, win a medal for Switzerland…that would make me so proud. But if that doesn't happen due to the situation, I would be the first to understand," Federer told Switzerland's Leman Bleu television.
Federer said nothing was clear as of now.
