Jane Austen purists will be aghast, but if you go with director Carrie Cracknell’s playful makeover of the author’s ruminative last completed novel into a buoyant Regency rom-com, you could be pleasantly surprised. Freely mixing language lifted from Austen’s prose with distinctly modern words and attitudes — this is a movie in which someone is described as “electrifying” in a pre-electric age — Persuasion is sufficiently bold and consistent with its flagrant liberties to get away with them. It also helps that the novel’s long-suffering protagonist, Anne Elliot, has been given irrepressible spirit and an irreverent sense of irony in Dakota Johnson’s incandescent performance.
It’s easy to argue that Austen’s darkest, most mature novel was never meant to be treated like Emma, but Johnson, in her most lighthearted role to date, makes us complicit in Anne’s wry...

Mark Schwahn has been accused of sexual harassment by 25 female crew members who work on his E! soap “The Royals.” The women all signed an open letter in which they describe “repeated unwanted sexual harassment” at the hands of Schwahn. The creator was accused of similar allegations earlier this week by the female cast and crew of “One Tree Hill.”
“Upon reading a statement from the ladies of ‘One Tree Hill,’ a statement from their Royal sisters could not possibly go unwritten,” the letter begins. The women say they were aware of the rumors surrounding Schwahn’s behavior on the set of “One Tree Hill” but went into the filming of “The Royals” hoping they were “just rumors.” “By the time we wrapped this had irrevocably proven not to be the case,” they write.

You might not know her name, but Jessica Gunning has been part of some of the best, most ground-breaking British film and TV of the last decade. Born in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire ("... where Last of the Summer Wine was filmed," she says. "Claim to fame!"), Gunning later joined the National Theatre where she shared the stage with Hayley Atwell.
Unforgettable moments in Doctor Who (destroyed by CGI munchkins), Fortitude (by far some of the icy drama's grisliest scenes) and BBC Three comedy Top Coppers have confirmed her place as an exciting talent.
1. Doctor Who (2008)
Gunning brought charm to the part of poor Stacey Campbell, who met a darkly comic fate - she melted and was replaced by a pack of adorable Adipose, marshmallow-like blobs that posed an unlikely threat to Earth.
"You do really feel when you're doing Doctor Who that you're part of something that's pretty special," says Gunning.

The broadcaster's chief creative officer Jay Hunt announced at this year's annual report that the sitcom was part of the channel's aim to "foreground female voices".
Chief executive David Abraham also named the comedy as one of his "standout moments" of 2013.
Jessica Knappett's show debuted in October last year, attracting around 500,000 viewers on average. Lydia Rose Bewley and Lauren O'Rourke also starred.
Head of comedy Phil Clarke said of Knappett: "Her writing gets stronger and stronger, and she was a different writer at the end of that series than she had been at the beginning."
Inbetweeners Movie star Knappett previously confirmed that she was writing a second series back in January.
She said: "I'm tempting fate a bit, but I've started writing it just in case. It's looking good and I want to be ahead of the game if it happens.

Premiering this week to TV screens is a new comedy from ITV2. Whilst recent British comedies have been more contemporary and reflecting the trials and tribulations of modern British life, Plebs opts for something different: the location of Ancient Rome as its main backdrop.
WhatCulture managed to speak to one of the stars of the new sitcom, Lydia Rose Bewley, who gained attention for starring in 2011’s The Inbetweeners Movie.
So, what is Plebs?
Well its set in ancient Rome centred around three boys who live in a mudhut. I play their slave called Metella, who sorts of gets dragged into a lot of their escapades.
Tell us a bit more about your character and how she’s involved overall in the story?
As I said, my character’s called Metella and she’s a slave, but really has a lot more going on in her head than most of the other characters do.

For the ‘Drifter' girls it's time to start asking some serious questions: What do they do now? Who are they going to be? And is it ok to shag someone with a sweat problem if you haven't had sex in twelve months?
Not fully paid up career women, they take...
The show, called Drifters, features three of the stars of the spin-off film - Lydia Rose Bewley (represented by Curtis Brown) and Jessica Knappett, who played clubbers Jane and Lisa, and Lauren O'Rourke, who played Neil's girlfriend.
The three will play three twenty-something young women Meg (Jessica Knappett), Bunny (Lydia Rose Bewley) and Laura (Lauren O'Rourke), experiencing their first slice of the real world post-University - making terrible decisions, but having a brilliant time doing it.

Charlie Bewley ("Demetri" in The Twilight Saga) will be joining his sister Lydia Bewley on the London stage this October.
The two will be appearing in "The River Line" at Jermyn Street Theater in London in early October.
According to one source, the story of the play - based on Charles Morgan's 1949 novel of the same name - is as follows:
It is the story of a group of downed, allied pilots in occupied France in 1943 hiding from the Nazis in the granary of a farmhouse owned by a member of the resistance. Tensions rise as they await news of the last leg of their journey through occupied Europe to the Pyrenees along the escape route known as ‘The River Line’. Following on from the previews figures that we saw last week, it’s no surprise that we’ve just heard that The Inbetweeners Movie (our review here) has raked in a massive £13.2m at the UK box office in the past 4 days breaking the previous record for a UK comedy which was previously held by Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason.
I’ve placed the official press release below for your viewing pleasure but with figures like this, does that mean that there could be room (or requirement?!) for a sequel to the extremely popular Channel 4 series movie? As an UK going audience, the answer would surely be yes!
During the Big Screen weekend last week, I attended The Inbetweeners panel which was attended by the writers of both the series and the movie, I asked that very question to the writers of The Inbetweeners, Iain Morris, Damon Beesley...

I was away from my computer all day yesterday on a cracking set visit which you can hear all about in around a year from now (!) but while I was away, we received this press release to show that even though The Inbetweeners Movie isn’t officially out until today, it still smashed it at the box office ot bring in over £2.5m on it’s first preview day! Not bad for a movie that didn’t get any screenings before the premiere!
The movie follows on from the awesome TV series where our favourite characters played by Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, Joe Thomas, Emily Head and Belinda Stewart-Wilson. This time we get to see Simon, Jay, Neil and Will head on their holidays to do their best to find the woman of their dreams!
Our review of the movie will go live later today.
