This year, there is no shortage of Hollywood star power -- ahem, the Broadway debuts of Amy Schumer and Uma Thurman, the return of Anna Camp and Clive Owen, and the Boss -- as well as anticipated new productions, must-see revivals and the redemption of director Julie Taymor. The Muppets' house band Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem performed "live" for the first time ever at the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival. During a 20-minute set, the band played their original song "Can You Picture That?" followed by a few covers including Mowgli’s "San Francisco" and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros' "Home." Also on the five-song set list was "Ophelia" by The Band and, of course, "With A Little Help From My Friends" by The Beatles. You can watch the full performance below.

When she’s not co-starring in the HBO series “Vinyl,” actress Olivia Wilde is busy directing music videos for big-deal bands that need A-list talent behind the camera. Case in point: Wilde recently directed a Red Hot Chili Peppers music video for the song “Dark Necessities,” the lead single off of their latest album “The Getaway.” The video features a group of long boarders skating around dark streets and a grocery store, drinking beers, and getting tattoos while the band plays the song in a separate room. Watch the video above.

When actress-turned-director Olivia Wilde signed on to direct No Love Like Yours, the latest video from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, she knew she wanted to shoot the project on an iPhone for both financial and stylistic reasons. But her Dp, Reed Morano (who directed Wilde in last year’s Meadowland), a self-described film snob, initially resisted, fearing the quality would be sub-par. But eventually, Morano came around to the idea of shooting on an iPhone 6S Plus along with a makeshift camera rig and the Filmic Pro app, the anamorphic adapter which was used to shoot Tangerine. In the resulting 6-minute video, lead singer Alex […]...

Alex Ebert, who's the frontman of an indie folkband called Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, won a surprise Golden Globe in January for scoring "All Is Lost," taking to the stage with his messily coiffed head of hair, and smoothly diffident demeanor. "All Is Lost" was his first collaboration with director J.C. Chandor, who tasked him once again to score his followup "A Most Violent Year," an elegant crime drama starring Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain as a pair of modern-day oil tycoons who, in 1981, must defend their empire against rapidly shifting social currents. Ebert's moody, subtle, seething and ominous arrangements (which you can stream here) include original song "America For Me," which uses avant instrumentation, along with more classical and period-driven textures, to deliver a dark, pulsing ode to the American dream. This is your second collaboration with J.C. Chandor, since "All Is Lost," which is also a great score.

This year, Ebert has once again partnered with director J.C. Chandor on A Most Violent Year, which takes them off the high seas and into the gritty, crime-ridden world of 1981 New York.

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to join Cameron Tucker and Mitchell Pritchett in holy matrimony and to mourn the passing of what was a rather flat, occasionally inspired season of Modern Family.
When I first began reviewing the sitcom back in September 2013, after an impressive double-episode season premiere, I claimed, “Television’s most celebrated comedy is not going through a mid-series crisis.” Well, although several half hours this season will remain among the top episodes of the ABC comedy, I do not stand by that statement. Modern Family was occasionally brilliant this year, but was also marred by silly subplots and rushed pacing. The fifth season began with Mitch and Cam’s poignant in-tandem marriage proposals, and although their impending wedding has always kept some momentum going until this two-part finale – inconveniently airing on two separate weeks – the big day did not live up to expectations.

Alex Ebert, rocker and lead singer of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, surprised audiences Sunday night when he won the Golden Globe for best Original Score for his work for All Is Lost.
All Is Lost, which features very little dialogue, was the first movie score for Ebert, and did not win any other Golden Globes despite its star Robert Redford being nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama.
Ebert beat out film composing veterans such as John Williams (The Book Thief) and Hanz Zimmer (12 Years a Slave). Ebert certainly provided the Globes with a change of pace, first inspiring Sean Diddy Combs to give him a big hug after reminding him that they had met before, at a party on a boat in St. Barts. Ebert also solidified his place in viewers’ memories by giving Jared Leto a run for his money, appearing on stage with...

Los Angeles - The score to Robert Redford's quiet, isolated film "All Is Lost" is, as one could expect, quiet and isolated. It's very patient output from composer and songwriter Alex Ebert, whose regular gig in the roving roots rock and psych-pop band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros features him resembling more of a tent revival preacher, a charismatic reveler-leader of a pack 12-strong musicians plus their fervent fans. So "All Is Lost" is a reflection of alternate abilities, or a weirder, more alienated take on Ebert's knack for headstrong melodies and executions. He's stretched out, too, before in his...

Robert Redford‘s All is Lost is hitting on the 18th (the 25th wide), and I have a chance for you and a friend to catch it.
It has the potential to be one that people will talk about for a long time, and my suspicion is that you’re really going to want to take advantage of the big screen here, so jump in now.
It’s already got a lot of great press, and has earned the Critics’ Choice Seal of Approval, which is harder to come by than you might think.
Even the most jaded of us, who might wonder about the film with a guy alone… lost at sea…, have to think that Redford didn’t get on board (ha) this project without some compelling reason, and he’s the guy who can give us whatever performance is needed to carry us through.

Every once in a great while, a movie comes along that leaves you truly riveted to your seat and resonates with you long after you’ve left the theater. All Is Lost is unlike any other.
It is one of those rare experiences when simplicity of story and intensity of emotions come together consisting entirely of prose description, with no dialogue. What’s most impressive about the film is that All Is Lost does not feature a single shot set on dry land. Camera crews filmed in various parts of the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean, including off the coast of Ensenada, Mexico, about 80 miles south of San Diego.
Where it really triumphs is when Chandor occasionally lets his camera linger on Redford and relish his quiet, simple activities in a way seldom seen on film.

The latest offering from pseudo-hippie messiah Edward Sharpe and the disciples, the Magnetic Zeros, feels like the end of a great party. People have started moving towards the door because the thing has gone on long enough for us to realize that, sometimes, alcohol doesn’t bring out the best in people.
The second track on the album “Let’s Get High” reminds me of Bluto’s “When the Going Get’s Tough” speech from Animal House; it’s an emotionally sincere attempt to get the group back into the spirit, but do we really want to be? The song is fun, the lyrics are silly, but it’s the musical equivalent of seeing one man with a lampshade on his head telling everybody how great this party is. Most of the songs from...

Here is the the long-awaited trailer for Ben Stiller's The Secret Life of Walter Mitty — a film he both directs and stars in, alongside Kristen Wiig, Sean Penn, Adam Scott's beard, and an appropriately twee soundtrack from Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men. (You assumed it was Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, didn't you?) Based on James Thurber's 1939 short story, the film was the subject of a New Yorker story that focused, in part, on its budget troubles. Sure, we've known about Adam Scott's beard for some time now, but did you also know that Sean Penn appears as himself?...

It's a big week for Selena Gomez, who turned 21 on Monday and now will likely see her first No. 1 album in the days to come.
Billboard reports that industry insiders predict "Stars Dance," the singer's fourth album, will sell between between 90,000 and 100,000 copies in its first week. That figure will place it atop next week's Billboard 200 chart.
If these expectations hold true, "Stars Dance" will by far rank as Gomez's most successful album to date. Her previous effort, 2011's "When the Sun Goes Down," debuted at No. 4 after selling 78,000.
Gomez faces a relatively low-key competition slate that includes Marc Anthony's "3.0," The Winery Dogs' self-titled debut album and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros' self-titled third release. The new record's potential is catapulted by lead single "Come & Get It," which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and currently sits at No. 15.

If The Lumineers were Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros of 2012 movie trailers, then are Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros the Lumineers of 2013 movie trailers? It looks that way: The Edward Sharpe song "Man on Fire" underscores the new trailer for "Crystal Fairy," one month after the track was used in the trailer for "August: Osage County."
Starring Michael Cera and Gaby Hoffmann, "Crystal Fairy & The Magical Cactus" is about a drug-fueled road trip through Chile. "I'm just so impressed that people are watching it and enjoying it," Cera said about the film, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January. "It's so thrilling to me, because it's such a personal thing. We made it in two weeks and it's so personal. It's like a home video. And people are really enjoying it."
Watch the trailer above; "Crystal Fairy & The Magical Cactus" is out in theaters July 12.

As the only non-country artist left in the game, "The Voice" Season 4 finalist Michelle Chamuel has a lot riding on her shoulders. Not only is she newbie coach Usher's only hope at possibly upsetting fellow coach Blake Shelton's near-inevitable three-peat -- and the only hope for electropop music fans at home to have a victory of their own -- but there's also that recording contract up for grabs.
After her final night of performances on Monday (June 17), Chamuel spoke with reporters backstage, where she opened up about song choices, preparation for the week and how she felt she handled the night's performances.
"There was a lot more multi-tasking," Chamuel says, regarding prepping for the week. "So, we're in the car, I'm listening to the song; I'm going to sleep, I'm listening to the songs; I'm getting my hair done, I'm listening -- you know, there's a lot less time.

Last year, Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show joined forces for the Railroad Revival Tour, a trek that took them through the American Southwest on a journey that was nearly as long as the names of the band names involved.
Director Emmett Malloy rode along with them, capturing each show and every magical moment aboard the rails ... and now, he's brought it all together in a brand-new documentary, "Big Easy Express," which premiered during the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. And at the premiere, MTV News caught up with three of the stars — Mumford's Ben Lovett, Edward Sharpe's Alex Ebert and Old Crow's Gill Landry — to talk about making the film, which, from the sound of things,...

Chuck vs. the Music: Five Seasons of Great Tracks
The final episode of Chuck airs this Friday and this is an impressive achievement considering how close it came to cancellation during this period. Chuck clearly has a rabid fan base that has shown their devotion which led to this 5-year run. The Subway campaign was a good way to prove that despite low audience figures this show was worth keeping on the air and I definitely bought a sandwich or two.
For me though it would be far easier to measure my love for this show by the amount of tracks on iTunes that I have purchased after hearing them first on Chuck and I’m sure I’m not the only one. For some it is the pop culture references that made Chuck the charming show it is, for others it is the characters and while these two factors are incredibly important,...

A fab new track from Brooklyn's own Caveman; a pastoral folk-rock blend melding the best elements of Band of Horses meets R.E.M.'s rock-pop majesty. Their 10-track CD and vinyl debut drops on Novemeber 15th, and digitally on September 13th. With opening slots for White Rabbits, Ed Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The War on Drugs, et al., it won't be long until they start headlining shows in a town near you.
