Funny Girl has recouped its capitalization costs on Broadway, producers said Monday.
The musical, which originally opened at the August Wilson Theatre in April 2022, was capitalized for $16.5 million. The production, starring Lea Michele, is set to close on Broadway on Sept. 3. A North American tour, starring Katerina McCrimmon, will follow.
The production started with Beanie Feldstein in the leading role, but after she received mixed reviews, grosses and attendance began to fall. Feldstein was then replaced with Michele, who had already performed several of the songs on Glee and thus was a draw for audience members. However, Michele had to fight back against allegations of on-set bullying while on the television show as well as the controversy of taking over the role from Feldstein. She came into the production on Sept. 6, 2022, and was well-received in the role, and the box office began trending upward.

Grey House, a rare thriller on Broadway, will be closing on July 30, after opening at the beginning of June.
The play, which stars Laurie Metcalf, Tatiana Maslany and Sophia Anne Caruso and features direction by Joe Mantello, began preview performances at the Lyceum Theatre on April 29 and opened on June 6. While the concept of horror is not often seen on Broadway, the production was not able to translate that to ticket sales and saw a soft box office throughout its run.
Since opening week, capacity for the show has not risen above 70 percent, and has dipped into the 50s. Grosses have similarly stayed under $400,000.
Written by Levi Holloway, the play follows a couple (Maslany and Paul Sparks) who crash their car in the mountains and seek shelter in a cabin. While there, they witness strange behavior from the inhabitants of the cabin, who include Metcalf, Caruso and a band of young kids,...

A new musical written by Anna Deavere Smith and featuring music from the Ella Fitzgerald songbook is currently in development. Ella: An American Miracle will receive an Aug. 25-Sept. 21 work session, with Tony-winner Dee Dee Bridgewater and Charity Angél Dawson portraying the iconic singer at different points in her life.
The work session will conclude with a private industry presentation. A production timeline was not disclosed.
“Composers wanted Ella Fitzgerald to sing their songs because listening to her, they knew how their songs were supposed to be sung,” said Smith in a statement. “A jazz singer, a scat singer, she also famously both sang and defined the American song book. To say she had humble beginnings is a profound understatement. She sang America through some of its most discordant times. She was America’s love song. She was an American miracle.”

For Hangmen, which features a large ensemble of actors with Alfie Allen in the central role of a possible killer, co-star David Threlfall, who plays one of the executioners of the title, will be eligible in the leading actor/play category. Both Allen and Threlfall received excellent reviews.

Billy Crystal reminded an audience at last night’s dress rehearsal for his Broadway show Mr. Saturday Night just why he was such a popular Oscar host way back when.
During a curtain speech following the final dress rehearsal – the new musical has its first Broadway preview tonight – Crystal made the kind of genial yet topical quip that served him well as Oscar host for much of the 1990s: “We got through a show and no one got slapped. Unbelievable.”
Check out the speech above.
Mr. Saturday Night is a musical adaptation of the 1992 Columbia Pictures film of the same name, and features Crystal as Buddy Young Jr., the once outrageous comic star from TV’s early days. The musical’s story picks up 40 years after Buddy’s career flamed out, and, as the synopsis states, he “seeks one more shot at the spotlight, and while he’s at it,...

“It was a crazy experience,” Patrick Foley chats about the flurry of activity it took to produce “Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical” in just one month. Foley and Michael Breslin are both executive producers and writers of the musical special, which grew out of the phenomenon of hundreds of TikTok users writing original songs for a then-hypothetical musical adaptation of the 2007 Disney/Pixar film. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
As executive producers, Breslin and Foley assembled an all-star team behind the scenes, including Jeremy O. Harris as fellow executive producer, Lucy Moss as director, Ellenore Scott as choreographer, and David Bengali as video designer. “Once we had those core pieces together, then we were off to the races,” Foley shares. The entire team, he adds, shared a goal to “honor and lift up the TikTok material,” especially the original creators’ “exuberance and joy of invention.”

‘Little Shop Of Horrors’ Review: Jonathan Groff, Tammy Blanchard Bring The Off-Broadway Classic Home
Little Shop of Horrors, the once and current Off Broadway marvel, announced in 1982 the arrival of two songwriters – Howard Ashman & Alan Menken – who’d soon expand musical theater boundaries to swallow Hollywood like so much plant food. The musical comes home again (you can’t isn’t in its vocabulary) with Michael Mayer’s delightful production featuring a dream trio of Jonathan Groff, Tammy Blanchard and Christian Borle.
In a staging that feels garden-fresh while honoring everything that made the musical such an invigorating blast nearly 40 years ago, this Little Shop sold out its limited run at the Westside Theatre (Upstairs) before performances began in September, prompting an eight-week extension through Jan. 19 that offers audiences a rare opportunity to see the show on the turf and in the manner that Ashman & Menken must surely have envisioned.

When I talked to Ellenore Scott backstage after the So You Think You Can Dance finale she showed me the scrapes on her knees and elbows like war wounds. They were impressive. Much like Russell's tears, they also drove home the theme of the evening. Dancing is a contact sport.
Just as painful, a needle holding her dress together was stabbing her in the stomach. Ellenore has a high tolerance for pain.

A new winner of "So You Think You Can Dance" has been crowned on Wednesday, December 16, and it was krumper Russell Ferguson who came out as America's favorite dancer. Having little training and no experience in the type of dances required for the competition, the 20-year-old has been the favorite among the judges and audience alike throughout season six.
During the result show finale, however, the krumper wasn't able to perform on stage. Within the first 45 minutes, he was seen limping onto the stage with the help of fellow competitor Ryan Di Lillo for the first cut. It was revealed that he broke his ankle after a routine. To host Cat Deeley, he shared, "I messed my leg up".
It was then announced that Di Lillo finished in sixth place, followed by wife Ashleigh Di Lello in fifth, Ellenore Scott in fourth, Kathryn McCormick in third and Jakob Karr in second.

The top six performed on So You Think You Can Dance's final performance episode last night, and danced with each other, although only in opposite-sex couples, unlike previous seasons. One of the finalists--Ashleigh Di Lello, Ryan Di Lello Russell Ferguson, Jakob Karr, Kathryn McCormick, and Ellenore Scott--will win $250,000 for being America's favorite dancer. Although husband and wife Ashleigh and Ryan got to dance together for the first time and were praised by the judges,...

The contestants of "So You Think You Can Dance" season 6 have been narrowed down to 6 on Wednesday, December 9. Two were sent home, while Ashleigh Di Lello was absent from performing after popping her shoulder out of her socket.
Jonathan "Legacy" Perez and Ryan Dilello were in the bottom two in men's part. And when it came to women's turn, Mollee Gray and Ellenore Scott were revealed as the two to be in the unsafe zone. The safe participants beside Ashley thus were Jakob Karr, Russell Ferguson, and Kathryn McCormick.
While the folks in the bottom four were preparing for their solos, the so-called "Asia's No. 1 Pop Group," the Wonder Girls took the stage and performed their hit single "I Want Nobody But You", which reportedly is the English version of "Nobody". And prior to the final results, audience were treated to a performance from "American Idol" 8th season champion Kris Allen...

Being tapped as guest performer, Kris Allen took the stage of "So You Think You Can Dance" result show on Wednesday night, December 9. The reigning champion of "American Idol" strummed his guitar when performing "Live Like We're Dying", his lead single off debut album "Kris Allen".

The two join Jakob, Ashleigh, Kathryn and Russell in the final six for finale show on Tuesday, December 15.

The So You Think You Can Dance season 6 injury curse has struck again. This time smiting Ellenore Scott just a week before the finale which barring injury, she was basically a shoe-in for.
We got word of Ellenore's injury, which appears to be her shoulder or bicep, via Twitters from her concerned choreographers: Tabitha and Napoleon and Travis Wall. We don't know how Ellenore was injured, but it means that she and her partner Legacy have been unable to rehearse their routines. The brutality of this blow is tripled, not only is it our favorite female dancer just before the finale, it means we probably won't get Ellenore full force (if we get her at all) in a Travis Wall contemporary routine and a NappyTabs hip hop routine. Two routines she and Legacy, without question, could kill.

Something has changed on So You Think You Can Dance. And I'm not just talking about the sad departure of Mia Michaels, or that strange sulphuric smell ever since an over-hyped Katie Holmes stunk up the place with her pre-taped Judy Garland song and dance "tribute." (Yeah, we're all still scratching our heads over that one.)
No, the change I'm referring to is a good one: The show isn't so darn homophobic these days.
This season's Top 10 dancers: Pictured back row L-r: Russell Ferguson, Mollee Gray, Nathan Trasoras, Ryan Di Lello, Jakob Karr, Ashleigh Di Lello and Legacy Perez. Bottom row L-r: Kathryn McCormick, Noelle Marsh and Ellenore Scott.
In previous seasons, Sytycd had a readily apparent mean streak when it came to the gays. Male dancers who were on the... uh... lesser side of butch were routinely criticized for not having enough "chemistry" with their female partners.

Recognition, a spot on tour and a paycheck are all a part of what it means to be in the So You Think You Can Dance top 10. Last week, Karen Hauer, an American Rhythm dancer from Fort Lee, N.J., and Victor Smalley, a contemporary wonder from Miami, barely missed the mark as the judges had their final say in who stays and who goes. This week, season 6's top 10 will get new partners, and the fans will handle the cuts from here on out until a new winner is crowned America's Favorite Dancer. --Jed Dreben Here's a rundown the...

This morning So You Think You Can Dance executive Nigel Lythgoe took a moment to sit and chat with reporters about season 6 and the upcoming Carrie Underwood All-Star Holiday Special. We'll share his thoughts on Carrie Underwood later, but wanted to share what the head judge had to say about So You Think You Can Dance and tonight's Top 10 performance show.
Nigel says we all have a real treat coming our way tonight in the form of a Jakob Karr performance choreographed by Sonya Tayeh, as well as confirmation that Jakob's new partner is Ellenore Scott. Nigel also chatted amiably about the Di Lello's (in spite of forgetting Ashleigh's name), missing Billy Bell, and the impressive growth of some of season 6's dancers.

The Top 12 of "So You Think You Can Dance" season 6 have been wilted down to mere 10. Married ballroom dancer couple Ashleigh Di Lello and Ryan Di Lello are through to the next round but Karen Hauer and Victor Smalley have to stop their journey on the show.
During the deliberation, Karen and Victor were joined in the bottom three by Mollee and Nathan; and Ellenore and Ryan. All six of them had to dance for their lives if they wanted to stay in the competition. Karen was criticized for looking like she has surrendered and thus was the first to be eliminated. On the other hand, Victor delivered an energetic piece but it was not enough to convince the judges to keep him.
The Top 10 apart from the Di Lellos are thus Russell Ferguson, Mollee Gray, Jakob Karr, Noelle Marsh, Kathryn McCormick, Jonathan "Legacy" Perez, Ellenore Scott and Nathan Trasoras.

[To better cover the technical talents of season 6, we've brought on Dr. Goddess, a guest columnist with decades of dance experience. She will share her dance-pertise in a weekly column recapping and reviewing So You Think You Can Dance with an eye on technique.]
Fierce competition tends to make performers work harder and better. This week proved both grueling and inspirational for the dancers who aspire to be in the Top 10 of So You Think You Can Dance!
Ryan Dilello and Ellenore Scott started the show with a fabulous Lindy Hop from new choreographer, Carla Heiney. I am loving the new choreographers this season! All of them have been wonderful and Carla's addition was great, especially since the Lindy Hop has not been seen on the show since season 3. That's just shameful! But with high kicks, sharp spins and "coffee grinders with front flairs", Ellenore and Ryan demonstrated the kind of sustained expertise and showmanship that will have them coasting right into the national tour. Here's a special nod to Frank Manny, one of the creators of the Lindy Hop. In their next Broadway number with Spencer Lift, Ryan and Ellenore were absolutely superb...

Sadly, I think we can all agree that most of this season's choreography and the performances have been a bit lackluster. But fear not fading So You Think You Can Dance fans, season 2 star and the great contemporary choreography hope, Travis Wall promises we are in for a real treat when it comes to his couple's performance tonight. By the looks of his Tweets Travis couldn't be more pleased with his couple (rumored to be Ellenore Scott and Ryan Di Lello) who he describes as "breathtaking" and "perfect."
